I just finished building it. Home Depot nor Lowes sell 4x8's. the biggest is a 4x6 or a 6x6. I used 4 4x6x8's . they also do not sell those type of brackets, look for staircase brackets, the are thicker and able to support a nice load. a nominal height of approx 24inches didn't seem tall enough so I stacked 5, 4x6 to get an approx height of 27.5" for the arm rests. The 2x8s I have higher than shown here because it seemed so low, I raised it to about 13 inches. the backrest is at an angle of 70 degrees using a speed square pivoted from the back corner of the arm rests. It's quite comfortable even without the cushions which is the only thing left I need. Hopefully my experience can help someone trying to use local home centers to get this project done. Thanks a lot for the idea!
My Home depot sales 4x12-8ft for $34.11. These are not on the lumber isle, be sure to look by the garden area or ask more than one person at the store. Not ever employee knows where everything is.
Just finished mine in Shou Sugi Ban. Added a small Side table with the off cut 2x8s and some drift wood beam scrap that I pulled of the beach. Looks awesome!! Adding a chair to match (easy) just measure the 2x8 to what ever cushion you'd like. I'll cut the 4x8 at 31 ish for the arms. 4x8s are easy to find, skip the Home Center and use your local Proffesional Building supply Store. One thing not mentioned here is that there's no way you can drive the Lag bolts without predrilling. (Maybe if your using a corded hammer drill). I think there's better hard wear to use in place of the lag bolts. I would of used 14 inch construction grade timber screws. There a little more expensive but.. Awesome project all the way around!!! Thanks LOVE IT !!
Oh what an awesome idea! Great piece! Just wanted to say that there are GRK screws up to 24" long and are use sometimes in landscaping timbers. They do not rust and are extremelt hard so you would need hard tips for the drill. The larger sizes are hex heads too! They are pricey but well worth the money.
WARNING!! For anyone considering doing this project: 4x8 are almost impossible to find, without getting an expensive special order from a lumber store. You probably won't find it at a Lowes or Home Depot. Instead do with Brian suggested in the comments below and use 4 or 5 4x6s instead. It won't look exactly like the video, but good luck trying to find the 4x8s. Another hard to find item, as Brian also said, are the L brackets. The ones I was able to find are about half the length of the ones in the video or half the width, so you may want to double up and buy twice as much shown. Finally, know that this couch is SMALL. The average sofa seat is about 17-18 inches off the ground. this one, minus the cushions is only 10 ft off the ground. The entire couch is the height of an average seat height. Whether you use 4x8s or 4x6s, consider adding more than 2 feet worth, unless this is for children.
Bipin Chandra Pal Gadi Home Depot has the L brackets like he’s using. At least in Baton Rouge they do. The 4x8’s on the other hand is another story. The only way I could find them was from a lumber yard in cypress for either $80 or $60 each don’t remember.
freaking simple, easy and cheap, but could still sell for alot, between what, 220$ to 450$ depping on the finishing coats and material? crazy! i love it brotha!
To all the people that are thinking about making something like this for outside. Do not put/screw/glue the pieces of wood together BEFORE you put on some kind of protective finish. A stain only adds color and is great for making the grain pop out. It does not protect the wood from the elements.
Always recommend to put wood conditioner for the miniwax grey stain to absorb better and finish off with a miniwax seal coat ! 2 extra steps but make a hell of a difference
This is still one of my favorite projects of yours . I Finally have a patio big enough to make this for, so I'll be doing that now , thanks for having a cool brain, Ben
Built it, love it. Stain did not come out as well as I was hoping, might redo it next year. Also bought the seat cushions and back cushions from different ranges in IKEA and the blacks are not quite the same. It's not as noticeable in real life.
I made a modified version of this. Instead of 3 seats sofa, I converted it to 2 seats. Total cost was over $240, but it included nails, paint and other etc that wasn't included into his cost. Overall, it is definitely more expensive if you are doing this as your first DIY project. However, I am happy with the overall results. Thanks HomeMadeModern!
Hey so he ended up using some of your outdoor patio couch and making his own pull out design to create a pull out sofa bed for our guest room. He also made the garment rack, the flip desk as well as the industrial piping chair. He says he wants to get online and share the photos with you lol We love watching your videos. He has built so many things for our house. Oh I forgot to mention, he also built the pendant lamp with the colored cord. He also made a lumbar wall with some really cool shelves that stemmed from all of the other projects. We are also gonna take a stab at the concrete fire pit for our backyard. Thanks again for your site.
Aaron Cauraugh I think he's right, and I would suggest an identical 4'x 8' cut to 32" like the 3 pieces used to make the edges. Just place it right in the center and screw galvanized screws from the planks into it. That will keep the boards from bending in the middle.
Aaron Cauraugh you can add a smaller strip of wood and screw it to the back support then screw it to the middle wood. That’s how I would do it so that I won’t have to have a block in the middle roughing the ground.
Simple sofa. I love it. i think i will make 2 of them. Thanks for the inspiration sir. I think i may have added some supporting beams on the bottom of the seat tho. Looks like it may sag over time if not. Still a great bench.
for anyone looking for timber that size, the best bet is railway sleepers. Many builders suppliers sell new sleepers at 2.4mtr lengths that are 100mm x 200mm. in Ireland anyway.
Did you use GDF? Middle support is needed like Sean said below. That's a far span, even for Doug fir. Redwood would look better longer, or engineered beams would be sick. LVL or PSL, they could span without a middle support
+DIY Modern Would help if he'd given the size of lag bolts. In fact it still looked like he screwed the side pieces together instead of using actual lag bolts. Also those brackets holding the seat to the arms should be much beefier. Cool starting point!
+Joseph Taibi Jr. The size of the "lag bolts" depend on how deep you drill through the wood.... If you drill 4" into it than 8" lag bolt is a very secure bet
Hello, wonderfull proyect there Thanks for sharing. Im planning on building this and have a couple of questions. First Im bulding this for an the inside is there anything in particular that can change the theme from outside or inside? What are the parameter that determine this. Second: Are the 2x4 Strong enough to not need any middle support to carry on the weight of three full size adults sitting on it. Thanks,
I love the look of this sofa! I'm so excited to make this (when the weather cools down of course). Thank you so much for the inspiration. I have just subscribed and am now going to stay up way to late binge watching your videos lol.
Hey if you're making a square cut with a circular saw you can use your speed square as a fence if its big enough and if its metal. This helps a lot if your trying to cut a nice straight end
I dont have time to take a class, but there is always time for youtube, so I will take your advise and try to learn from youtube, thank you fot your time :)
Luisa Kubanzila No problem, hope it works out good. To be honest the first view project will look like shit, but once you get used to it, they will look amazing. Good luck.
Very nice, i like your style. I just finished my concrete countertops for my kitchen, using some of your techniques. Very helpful, I appreciate your great ideas and designs. Can you come up with a make up vanity design? Wife is going crazy looking for one, I would like to make one for her myself. Thanks.
Since I read “pepe amazing plan” (Google it), I think nothing will ever surpass it as an excellent wood working book. The text is easy to read and the pictures and drawings exceptional. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a wide range of info on just about everything working with wood working and does it quite well.
I just finished building it. Home Depot nor Lowes sell 4x8's. the biggest is a 4x6 or a 6x6. Brian do you have picture?
Brian what size did you cut the 4x6x8 into? im having a hard time finding 4x8x8 also
Brian Wanting to build this, approximately how much did you spend on the materials?
What is the length of the side armrests and the length of the boards between them?
My Home depot sales 4x12-8ft for $34.11. These are not on the lumber isle, be sure to look by the garden area or ask more than one person at the store. Not ever employee knows where everything is.
I am floored by how simple and beautiful this is. For anyone wondering, the seat cushions from Ikea are called Hållö.
Thanks so much.

This is the best looking, most simple, diy sofa I've seen. Great job. Thanks for doing what you do.
Nice looking couch-- I was surprised to see how simple it is!

fundifferent1 10ft off the ground, damn that's huge
if you can't find 4x8s use 2 2x8
Where did you find the L brackets?

Not hard at all. Lowe’s, Home Depot, menards. They all have this stuff in stock.

The sofa needs a middle support block to reduce stress on the brackets & screws.
what is your suggestion for support?

I love that you are using ryobi tools because I was always told that I wouldn't be able to do anything productive with my ryobi set.

You made this look so easy :O It looks so good! :)
It is easy, if you do not know anything about carpentry or building in general take a class in it or learn online, it is very easy honestly
I dont have time to take a class, but there is always time for youtube, so I will take your advise and try to learn from youtube, thank you fot your time :)

TimberLok makes extra long screws. Can't beat the variety and availability of lag screws though.
Adam R thanks! i will check that out
Adam R They are used for landscape ties. They would probably work great.
You make it look so easy. That was amazing!
A great looking sofa for indoors too, love it. Subscribed.
I love all your projects

What size lag screws did you use? I am going to try and make one of these tomorrow.
This is beautiful. What type of wood was used?
in love with this one!
That looked great. I have to try this. Thanks
amazing concept!! great sofa!!
Without the back, this could be a small child's bed frame. Pretty cool.
Simple and looks good.
Very very nice job!
I love this plan but how can i turn it into a sectional!! Thanks for all the vids!
Did you weather seal the wood at all? What's the angle of the backrest. This is awesome though, love it! Thanks
Just one word... Awsom
I liked it very well, I love wood furniture!
