Pimped my naked Yamaha RD 350 YPVS daily driver

- Hi 2-stroke afficionados. I pimped my naked daily driver on the next level: My 1987 RD350YPVS (type 1WW) in the "N" (naked) version. See the first testride after setting the ignition and power valve curve of the ignitec-box and re-jetting the carburetors to the exhaust.
Unlike in my full-faired ("F") RD with Mikuni TMX30 carburetors, I use the original 26mm types of the 31K version here with a modified original airbox. Exhaust system is a used DN Performance, identical to the one in my "F" - Version RD with "bean can" silencers in the look of the stock silencers (thanks to Michael for building those).
During the testride two problems apeared:
The first is, that the idle jets (size 25) are to lean so it needs a bit more revs at lower throttle. I will change on 27,5 like in the original 26mm carbs of the 1WW.
The second: As you can see and hear in the vid, the clutch is sliding when the engine comes in full resonance with the exhaust at 10500 RPM. Especially in the higher gears. After I recogniced that I avoided the range over 10500 RPM on my way back in fear to burn up the clutch. I will add three more of the reinforced springs in the clutch. At the time of the testdrive a mix of three original springs and three reinforced were installed, combined with heavy duty EBC clutch discs and Rock Oil Gear Saver transmission oil.
But apart from the little problems: the thing runs and has a really wide and usable powerband.
This bike was the one that made me a guy in love with two wheels, here in Brazil it is known as the black widow! Many people died in accidents with this motorcycle in the 90's, oh the nickname, sensational motorcycle!
Esta não é a viuva negra. FAKE NEWS. A viuva negra rd 350 era da década de 70. O pessoal não aprende!

Pretty fast for a 350. I had an older air cooled RD about 40 years ago and it was a basket case even back then. Put some new carbs, new pistons, new tires on it and a pair of expansion chambers and had a lot of fun for a couple of years. It was pretty finicky about things like elevation and low rev around town riding. Got tired of it. This water cooled one kind of makes me want one again.
Same. I had an air cooled 350 in 1978, with mods, it would top out at 160k's. Loved the sound and the power-band ... but it needed frequent work.
I Am 62.5 Years OLD, I Remember Those Days, IT Fires Me UP !!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
I can smell the 2 stroke watching this..... brings back memories
350ypvs probably the best bike of its time … oh i miss that pull and it’s slaughter of 90’s super bikes when tuned.
Had one in the 80’s and it felt like a bullet at the time………fast forward 35 yrs and I followed one, when he stopped he told me he was giving it everything and I thought he was just cruising…….how times change
A lot of people have no clue how to ride these, the red line is merely a suggestion, stay at it or above it and brake late, throw it into the turn and apply power early coming out of it. They will get left behind on the straights but they are amazing at reeling in large bikes in the twisties.
I had a 3 ypvs……….compared to a modern sports bike they are dog shite with no brakes, handling or power
As a lobg time lover of yam stinkwheels, owned 3 350LC's and a TDR250, I can tell you, that motor is sweet as a nut, so crisp a clean through out the rev range. Deffo a lucky bugger to use one as your daily driver.
Have 2 rd 350's .....air cooled versions....want to own this one and rd 500 now. Life is incomplete without these 2 bikes.
Me voló la cabeza la aceleración, reacción, estabilidad, todo. Que gran máquina !
Ya gotta love a ‘Valve’ incredible bang for buck and the like of them will never be ween again. So glad I managed to grab myself an F2 before prices got too crazy.
Wunderbar! Guter Mann, geiles Video! Erinnert mich an viele schnelle Kilometer auf meiner damaligen RGV-250 Suzi... 😊 2-Takt-Power for ever!!

Herrlicher Duft und Gänsehautsound... 🙃
Great bike the Yamaha RD350. Sounds great and goes like hell for the 80s
It blows my mind how this motorcycle keeps being called an rd350, while here in the states it was only imported a couple of years and only available in two colors schemes, one for each year, known only as the RZ 350 with the Yamaha power valve system. I know because I owned several and raced them.
@Away in a Ranger Nope, some other places as well, like all of europe...
@@GoldenCroc I think he means, in the UK its only known as the RD..
Not that UK is the only country where its known as the RD.
@Away in a Ranger No worries 🤘 👍
@Away in a Ranger Please be a bit more polite and settle down a bit before answering next time, we are all friends here, right?
Anyway: Nope, I am not from the US. Methinks you read my post above bit too fast, to say the least. I have never said its not known as an RD 350 in the UK, just that its known as an RD 350 elsewhere as well, the rest of europe for example. Its all there in the text.
I was mistaken about intent because the way you typed it, that was exactly the meaning it had taken on. No biggie, no one is perfect. Now you know why I thought that was it.
Cheers mate.
@@snakeman9902 That seem the most likely in hindshight, though with the wording he used, the answer I gave is what would be expected. English can be hard to use sometimes and take on different meaning just by shifting the words around a tiny bit.
He should have typed: "In the UK, its only known as the RD (350), not RZ (350)" for it to take on the meaning you said, which is exactly the way you typed it.
Cheers mate.
It's a real shame that most motorcyclists won't get to experience a revvy little stroker like this. They're only about 55/60 hp but the grin factor is 150hp all day long. So much fun!
I'm one of the lucky ones who had the chance to fully enjoy two strokers. What a blast.

My top faired and belly panned RZ350 would just clip 195kph- but you had to get through the 170kph death wobble that I was later told was cased by that fairing configuration.

very juicy and revs very nice...great surroundings also
Beautiful….crank won’t last at those revs !
Hello Alan, the crank isn't the weak stock part which bends at higher revs. This one is welded and can't lenghten like the Stock one dies. Bearings are from Koyo in C3 and originally used in the 2005 TZ250. The crank works in this engine since seven years and nearly 18000 Km without any signs of wearing.
@@Motomotfan ok now I understand …strengthening does help !
I have two 4DP yams which can run up to 2500 + Kms
From one of the same displacement we get 180 km/h. Greetings from Uruguay
Wonderful; can damn near smell it.
What a beautiful sound not to mention the smell. 🙂
The red on the tach means danger, too high rpm, just incase you weren't aware. I had ten of these bikes in the 1980s in California. Best times of my life screaming around on 2strokers
Read the discription. Engine is highly modified with high-power crank, forged pistons etc. Never had piston-meltdown, extreme piston wear, programmable ignition and power valve control. Used it on the track without problems, rev limiter @ 11200 RPM.

Yes, that's the reason I put the USD front fork, swingarm, brakes and 17" wheels of the 1993 RGV250 in the RD350YPVS. Best handling combined with the tuned 385ccm engine is a serious package.

I recognise those clocks! Only mine were in English and iirc peaked out at 9,500. Which makes no sence because it still maxed at 125mph (200kmph)? Sprocket change no doubt? How often do you replace a piston?
Liebe dieses Video, Zweitakt Power hehehe :D
Frage: Was braucht denn deine RD so bei DER Fahrweise so an Sprit auf 100km? 😅
Wow. My dream when I was 18
What did you do to get the revs so high? mine hits a wall at 9000 with stock pipes but also with expansion chambers
If you have the F2/N2 model the exhausts were designed to bring the Tom max power down c. 500 rpm.
But it should rev to 10k in all gears (except maybe 6. depending on sprockets/final drive ratio).
Check air filter, exhaust silencers, ignition timing, then carbs.
@@keithdawson4804 thanks. I have a 83 31k ypvs model. With stock pipes or GR expancion there is no difference in hitting the wall at 9k.
Squis is 1.2 mm
Still using standaard carbs ( 270/ 25 )
and airbox with a highflow filter and without snorkel.
I orderd a zeeltronic system ( ign + pv )
and i plan to order a set off V force. Maybe the next step some powejet carbs. Right now i have the needle in the highest position to get it running good from low rpm. Last winter i did a full rebuild, also New crankshaft, bearings, seals and 0.5 oversize pistons. Only did about 500 km so not running in in think. But before rebuild also no chance getting it over 9 k
@@wietzegorter5824
Are you sure it's not running rich mixture , or then weak.
It should not have any problems to hit 10k, standard or tuned.
See what happens without any air filter for a couple of km
@@keithdawson4804 next spring i will try again some settings and zeeltronic. I will let you know. Thanks
With a cold engine?...good luck to your barrells...
The small black line down on the temperature display marks 55°. This TWO-STROKE (!) engine works save between this temperature and 65°C. If the coolant exceeds 70°C (at about a third of the way on this gauge) the engine loses power and the pistons tend to melt on the exhaust side (often seen on RD/RZ enigines with stock radiator and stock thermostat).
Two-stroke engines run in a completely different temperature range than four-stroke engines. I use the Suzuki RGV 250 thermostat in this engine with an enlarged, RD-spezific radiator and 0.07mm piston clearance. It regulates at 55°C (and Suzuki knows why). Such a thermostat would never work in a four stroke engine as it would not get the engine oil up to operating temperature if the coolant temperature stayed that low. However, two-stroke engines do not have engine oil in this sense cause they suck the oil with the fuel.
INTERESTING ANECDOTE: Frits Overmars was the head of Aprilia's two stroke GP engine development for a long time and largely responsible for the superior performance of the Aprilia engines especially in the 125cc GP. A few years ago (and after the end of the two stroke GP era) he commented on the optimal temperature in the 2T engine as follows:
"With a 125cc engine, the target temperature was 40°C. Even colder would have been even better for power, but during the GP season some races were run with outside temperatures above 30°C and then cooling the engine below 40°C would have required a huge radiator, which due to its air resistance would have negated the power gain. For the same reason, the target temperature for the 250cc engines was 50°C." Petr, you see: Even 40°C cooling temp isn`t too cold for a two stroke.
Here in the RD350YPVS the 55-65°C are the life insurance for the RD/RZ engine. Unfortunately, Yamaha only grabbed the shelf and took the standard 4T gauge and sensor in the RD/RZ and did not build a 2T specific display. So it "looks" cold, but it isn`t.
