Tina was huge in my life for 2 reasons. 1, quite literally for this movie and 2 because she's all my grandmother would talk about...how great Tina is how much energy she has how great her legs are blah blah blah LOLOLOL......so yes as a young preteen and teen boy, Tina became like an icon to me because my grandmother adored her and then I saw beyond thunderdome and to be a part of a movie that I literally as a boy would play with Legos and set up my own road warrior truck battles and then go outside and play with the matchbox cars and set up huge battles with my small G.I.joes. there was constantly a road war happening in my bedroom at age 11!

My abiding memory of Mad Max films is being a teenager, just got my own TV in my room - desperately searching all 4 TV channels for something good to watch very late night - coming across this crazy, violent, weird film while half asleep in the middle of the night and being transfixed, burry-eyed for the duration and then not having any friends who’d seen the films and could talk about it with me. Love UA-cam for that reason - we can re-visit these together and connect over these nostalgic oddities.

Same here. I watched these films in my early teens in the late 80s and didn't know anyone else who watched them. And glad also for UA-cam for same reason. Thunderdome has always been my favourite of the Mad Max films.. loved it for the lost kids watching it as a kid, and love both the story and seeing Angry Anderson, Robert Grubb (Flying Doctors series), Bruce Spence, etc watching it as an adult.

Nice memory. I grew up in the 70s and 80s myself, I remember renting this movie in the early days of VHS as I was a little bit too young to see this movie in the theaters at the time. It was an instant classic and brings me back fond memories of what cinema was capable of as a young kid. Cheers!

I have a soft spot for this movie, saw it when it came out in the cinema. It expands the Mad Max universe, has such memorable characters and has an awesome soundtrack. It is my second favourite after Mad Max 2. When I hear Tina Turner sing One of the Living over the titles, it still gives me goosebumps.

Easily my most rewatched of the trilogy, it's the only Mad Max film that has a traditional plot-driven narrative and that has Max fully realized as a classic hero (and with more personality than ever) by the end of his character arc when Max finally steps up and earns his legacy, fully prepared to sacrifice himself for his accomplices in the final chase. The world-building of the Mad Max universe is also at its most interesting here, especially how Bartertown is presented (perfect TV show material right there) and of course the whole thunderdome sequence is one of the coolest and most inventive fight contests ever put to celluloid. I do wish it had something closer to the hard-edged brutality of the tanker chase in Road Warrior but all of the above is to such a high standard that it still manages to stand as the best of the trilogy for me, hands down.

@@Fiveash-Artbut it's all personal preference isn't it, what you think is "the best" doesn't necessarily mean it works with someone else, I personally think MadMax3 has aged the best, visually and sound quality, 1 is really hard to watch in my opinion, audio is terrible, 2 is such a good film, but unfortunately it's audio is also pretty weak, fury road is great, but is a bit extreme and personally don't think it will age as good once it reaches 40 years old, like the others
      Again, personal preference.

“Before he’s too old for the role.”
Man, Mel’s already 68 years old. 68. With Miller needing at least 3-5 years to get from script-to-pre-production-to-shooting, Mel’s would be in his mid-70’s when that film finally hit the silver screen. I’m sorry, but Mel’s already too old for the role.
By the way, I would’ve love to have seen Mel in Fury Road, but I understand why Warner Bros. nixed his potential casting for that film at the time.

For me MDBT is a fitting closing chapter for the trilogy. To me the film series was a showcase of how humanity destroys itself, hits rock bottom, and then begins to crawl back towards some civilized society. Fury Road is a story from the wasteland using the character of Max to help people like Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. There's a number of stories you can tell here as I see them like a new modern western or something like Dredd. But MDBT does feel like a closing chapter on all that. I loved the score and soundtrack and had it in the CD changer while I drew. I'm sad I wasn't aware of the limited edition CD that came out because now I think I'm going to have to spend some silly money to get it. Great retrospective! Thanks, Oliver!

@orwellianson yeah this one is pretty bad. Everything at Bartertown and the Thunderdome is good but it goes downhill after the first act. It feels like Max is taken from his bleak post apocalyptic war world and dropped off in a kid friendly Peter Pan world. It's like two films are in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with those tonal conflicts, pacing issues, and problematic writing, especially towards the end. Especially compared to literally everything other film in the series, Beyond Thunderdome is just so jarring and questionable and only has nostalgia going for it from 80s kids. Imagine if Conan the Barbarian teamed up with the Goonies and it feels too unnatural

The last shot with the city ruins remains as a haunting image, and Is even more accentuated after playing the 2015 videogame, where the abandoned oil rigs and islands have now become towers and small hills due to the lack of oceans.

I am aware about what Miller says about the timeline and Jedediah and Gyro Captain being 2 different characters, however i'd argue since Jed see's Max in Barter Town and clearly recognises him even though he didnt see him when he stole his vehicle and camels at the start, then Max see's Jed and says "You,- you have plane", how would Max have known he was a pilot if he didnt recognise him. Also the kid...., since Gyro Captain left at the end of Road Warrior with blonde chick you could speculate they had a kid and blondie didnt make it, she died or kidnapped/murdered.
They have a different name... well Gyro Captain isnt a name.

I've always loved Mad Max 3 and think it's much better than people give it credit for, especially in recent years when it seems to get hated on in comparison to Fury Road. At the time of its release I had no problem with its Hollywood-ization, it lacked the rawness and brutality of Mad Max 2, but you could see where the bigger budget had been spent and it had a bigger, adventure movie feel. Max became more human but still a bad ass, Tina Turner was fantastic and Auntie is best villain in the series IMO. I hope the franchise hasn't been killed by the (unjustified) underperformance of Furiosa, it would be awesome to see Mel back in the role somehow.

I LOVE the first half of this movie. The second half starts off interesting, and becomes more slap stick and ridiculous as it goes on, leaving a bad taste in everyone's mouth, and the negative vibe a lot of people have towards this film.
My actual biggest gripe about this movie is that the version of "One Of The Living" that starts the film isn't available anywhere but in the film, as the studio version is a very pop / produced version that has none of the grit and kick the one in the film does, and the film version is only one chorus and verse.

My head canon is that the Mad Max movies and game are stories "told to us" by the kids many, many years later who became the History Men and Women. The deep voiced intro narrators fit with this. Conflicting continuity and muddled facts mixed like so many of our stories from centuries ago. All of them (official canon) are sort of true and any conflicting details are unintentional mistakes made by the keepers of History. Hence the 2015 game and Fury Road destroying the 'Last of the Interceptors' is ok despite it being destroyed in Mad Max 2 and the similar appearance of the two pilots.

Madmax 2 and Thunderdome was the Madmax for me and my childhood buddies. This was how I remembered and how I picture madmax for the rest of my life. It was only on my teenage life that I went to see Madmax 1 and I found it boring back in the day. 🤣

I still loved this movie when I was younger. I do understand why this movie has the view of being the weak one. I seem to remember hearing that the child lost in the desert to the sand was Savannah's child. The impact was to hit better knowing that

Great review. I liked this one. I loved Tom Hardy as Max, but I do believe Mel should have continued the part in "Fury Road". When I was a kid, this one would play all the time, so this was my introduction into the series. I'm really hoping "Wasteland" gets a greenlight, I'd love to see another Mad Max movie.

I once got in touch with 'One of the Living' songwriter Holly Knight and asked her if there was an extended version of the song from the films title credits. Sadly, it was a slightly rearranged and shortened version of the demo. It's unfortunate as I've always loved the more cinematic sound it has. Holly was gracious and appreciated the compliments, and even went so far as to rummage around in her vault to see if she could find any trace of it but alas the odds are it's sitting somewhere in Warner Brother's vaults. The expanded score by Maurice Jarre is well-worth picking up as it includes some material/cues that never made it into the film.

I'm pretty sure I saw this one, first, then managed to track down Road Warrior soon after, all before I was 12. I watched Thunder Dome a ton. I was kinda shocked and laughed a bit when I finally got to see the first film, but have loved them all.
I still think that Thunder Dome was the best of the first three, just for how full the world felt compared to the other two.

I had never seen ANY of the Mad Max films until AFTER I saw Mad Max: Fury Road. Beyond Thunderdome is incredible. I watched it on 4K and fell in love with it. I like it more than Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and more than the first film. I haven't seen Furiousa. Great films!

I don't care, I love this movie from start to finish. Is it the "best" of the trilogy? Debatable, but IMHO they are all "good" movies in their own right. All three of them are different from the other two, and I see that as a strength. Mad Max starts us on the journey with Max and a world that's falling apart. Road Warrior shows us a world in chaos where only the strong survive. Thunderdome shows us a world attempting to rebuild SOME kind of society, even if it's a shitty one.

12:07 Angry Anderson isn't just an average Australian rockstar!
He's the singer of Rose Tattoo since the first album in 1978.
Rose Tattoo is "one of the most revered bands of all time. The Tatts played peerless, street-level heavy blues with the emphasis on slide guitar and strident lyric statements".
They aren't famous like AC/DC but for sure they are one of the most important Australian bands and American bands have made tribute to their legacy through the years.
'Nice Boys' was covered by Guns N' Roses in 1986 and 'Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw' was covered by Keel in 1987 and by L.A. Guns in 2004.

Great video thank you. Mad Max 2 is in my top 10 movies ever and as a kid growing up I actually really liked this movie and you have to commend it for trying something different but then also giving fans what they want at the end. I actually prefer this to Fury Road - I just hope one day we’ll get maybe an old man Mad Max movie with Gibson - but I doubt it as Miller is getting on now and I’ll be surprised if he does another MM related movie. I know Wasteland is in pre production but will we actually see it given how long it takes to get these movies off the ground?

I enjoy Thunderdome quite a bit, but my biggest problem with the movie is they should’ve made Bruce Spence’s character the Gyro Captain instead of a new character. Aside from his teeth being fixed, he’s basically the same character. So why not make him the same character
Tina Turner is really an interesting antagonist and gives a great performance.
    Anyway, nice retrospective!
