That clunking sound is something metal that is expanding due to the heat from charging. It's absolutely normal. Happens with my Model 3 when Supercharging all the time.
Thank you for the explanation and stress relief
We made it home! Thank you so much for following our adventure. Man, I missed Swiss Chalet chicken =)
You are so engaging and a pleasure to watch/hear your perspective and your thoughts. Please continue your vlogging, since you really are great at storytelling, cinematography, and generally a very pleasant person/family. Sharing what you learn with the viewers, with a nice and friendly approach, is your gift. Stick to it. Thanks for sharing!
This is such a kind comment - thank you so much, I really appreciate it 🙏
Auto-pilot is amazing on long trips. I use it for about 1/2 of the trip between Calgary and Vancouver. It makes the trip way less tiring. The 10km over the speed limit happens when you're driving on a non-divided highway. If it's a divided highway I think the max AP speed limit is 160km/hr. Thanks for sharing your trip. I can't wait to do that Calgary to Toronto drive to visit family out there.
Ahh... non - divided highway...That’s makes sense now... thanks for the clarification!
OMG I knew I wasn't crazy when I told my wife there is restaurant in Canada called Swiss Chalet. My uncle who use to live in Kitchener took me there on my winter break '94. I remember the food was good and every time we are in Tahoe it always reminds me of that eatery.
Its the swiss chalet sauce that makes it so delicious.. 😋
Although 3700miles at 40 miles per imperial gallon and petrol at 0.90USD per litre would be 382USD....so the predominant benefit (as supercharging slightly cheaper overall) is entirely less pollution at source of propulsion. 40 imperial mpg is pretty reasonable for a standard small SUV on motorway, even petrol.
Great job with the video, music and editing. You have inspired me to try that once I get my Tesla.
Thanks you! 100% do it!
Videos have improved significantly keep it up!
Thank you!
Did you take the trip to take delivery of your Tesla or some other reason you were in San Jose?
Thank you for sharing your trip with us! I thoroughly enjoyed being “with” you on your journey. I learned a lot about the possibilities of Tesla road trips.
Awesome. Thanks for following!
The sound that you are hearing is actually totally normal and part of the design of the battery pack. Contactors within the battery pack are electrically actuated switches that are used to connect/disconnect the batter pack during charging. The battery management system within the vehicle will connect the contactor when you plug in the super charger. There is some prep work that goes on at a hardware level to ensure safety to avoid things like arcing when there is a high voltage.
Lithium-ion batteries do not increase in size that much during charging. As outlined here: www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Expansion-of-Lithium-Ion-Pouch-Cell-Batteries%3A-from-Siegel-Stefanopoulou/a044170a8eb12c078491bbce79b9e035f7dc6f46, you get about a 0.5% increase in size during the charging cycle.
Interesting! I appreciate the explanation and info....much less worried now.
That 'thunking' is normal. Happens mostly in colder weather and happens as the battery heats up under charging and the internal battery management system opens and closes manages the battery temperature.
Ahhhh... that makes sense!
I loved the journey and will continue to watch. EVs are still rather pricey but they are rapidly getting better. The Y looks amazing.
On a sidenote, I love how the correct Canadian pronunciation is "Swish-alet."
"This is a very Canadian thing to eat: Swiss Chalet"🤣👍
Greetings from Switzerland😉
They have this sandwich shop here in Toronto called California Sandwiches... When I lived in Cali... there was no such thing 😂
You guys are awesome! Such a cool family. Your kids are lucky to have you as parents. ☺️ enjoy the Tesla and thanks for posting
Thanks so much!! 🙏
Tesla Bjorn theorized the pop is a metal cover that goes pop when it changes temp from cold to hot. I think he found the cause but it goes back a year in his content.
I think someone sent that to me too... i'll check it out - thanks!
That noise you are talking about is the High Voltage Battery relay closing to charge the battery. When you shut the car off the relay opens so when you attach the charger it has to close again to allow charging.
Welcome back to Toronto! You are super dad man, i dont think many of daddy is daring to do this trip. But im sure that will be the memorable trip for your family to remember and cherish forever. Thanks for the sharing.😊👍 Keep the good videos going.
Thank you! Naw the wife wears the cape... and those two kids are the heroes... but 100% agreed... such good memories
Great video, don’t think the clever edits go unnoticed.
Thank you! 🙏
I love autopilot and I have AP1. I use it all the time. Here is a tip. Use chill mode The speed limited autopilot is under a certain mph. Or Kph
Ahhh.. I didn't know chill mode made a difference with AP...Thanks for the heads up!
Great videos. Hope to make my own trip from LA to Banff in my own Tesla when it's permitted for people in US to cross over.
10km/h limit applies if you are not on highway.
Knocking noise is normal in the cold when charging. I think it’s just metal expanding because it’s heating up.
Ahhh.. thank you!!
Keep posting videos, Leon. You've got an authentic presentation style that is easy to watch.
Thanks so much 🙏
All 3 videos I enjoyed.
Nice to see you drive right by my house, outside Thessalon, ON!
You have a beautiful family brother. Just watched all 3 of this road trip videos. Really enjoyed it. I am waiting for my Model 3 SR+ / RWD . EDD is Feb. Thx again
What an amazing adventure! Started watching your channel as I was looking into the idea of getting an EV. I live in San Jose too and you look like someone who I would love to have coffee with and geek out over your Tesla!
Thank for following along. If you into coffee, camera, cars and bikes... we could geek out forever ..ha
Great episode. It was very informative. Glad to hear that you and your kids would do the drive again. We are flying home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and am planning to drive from Los Angeles via Vancouver to Toronto in June 2021. Our moving home to Toronto plan. Good to see all of the Superchargers access from Vancouver to Toronto. Missing Swiss Chalet chicken, fries and gravy. Still trying to figure the import process for my Model Y and will try to stop in the RIV office when we are in Toronto. Also, great to see how green and colourful fall is in Canada.
Nice! The process to bring the car back should be seamless now... when we bought our Y in July, the Y wasn't even listed on the import list... super stressful. Message me direct if you have any questions - We just got our car plated for Ontario. Safe trip back!
The thumping is normal. Usually happens when it’s cold.
Regarding your comment about the autopilot being limited to 10 km/h over the speed limit. I've noticed that this occurs when using autopilot on normal streets but also occurs on Highways that are reduced to 1 lane each way. I did a similar drive as you this past summer doing a round trip from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie and noticed there are portion on the trans canada highway where it would only allow me to use autopilot 10 km/h over the speed limit. Though, that changes once there is more than 1 lane and allows you to go over 10 km/h.
Pro tip: If you are stuck on 10km/h over the speed limit and want to go faster but yet let autopilot do the steering, just press on the accelerator and it will go fast but keep in mind it won't stop or keep its distance to the car in front of you if you keep pressing down on the accelerator. That or , as you have been doing, use traffic aware cruise control instead and steer yourself.
Great vid and glad you guys made it home safe! ...and yes you should have used autopilot earlier in your trip...I can't go without it either lol
Ahhh.. thanks for the tip! Someone else mentioned the dual lines vs single lines effected the AP with the speed cap too? I totally wished I used the AP more when the roads were nice and empty coming back.. vs HWY 401 traffic..
@@LeonChai lol 401 traffic is straight trash , I hate it haha
@@Thee_Shaz makes no sense this traffic!
wow I miss the Swiss Chalet... Live near Cincinnati but grew up in Toronto. Glad you got some but I’m seriously envious!!
Every time I flew back to Toronto (pre covid days) ... Swiss Chalet and Ketchup chips would be the two things I missed... (no ketchup chips in Cali??)
LOL - yep - me too - mom still lives there.
@@imrodmartin ask her to ship the sauce...ha
Congrats for your Model Y and enjoy it. I didn't regret not one single minute since bought my Model S in 2016. Thank´s for your wonderful videos. Greetings from Bremen, Germany.
Thanks so much! The Model S is a beast!
Amazing / Exciting / Crazy road trip of a life time. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Once in a lifetime for real! 🙏 for watching!
Watch all three of your video. What a journey. Thank you for sharing. My aunts lives in Vancouver. We took a tour to Lake Louise before. The sounds from charging is normal.
Thank you! I appreciate it
What a great trip that was! Just picked up my Model Y a week ago and loving it! When this pandemic ends, I hope do some big road trips too.
Nice!! Same here.. we want to do the east coast now when this ends!
Have the Cybertruck on order, and will definitely take a similar trip like yours whenever its released. Your comment at the end where you "would definitely do it again" just hits home. We are in a digital age where interactions are few and far in between. Very refreshing to see a family go out and enjoy their time in this pandemic. Few months ago we did a triangular trip between The Bay Area, LA, and Vegas. Was the best trip of my life with my wife and 2 kids.
Really enjoyed the excellent production quality. A+ video!
Thanks so much! The Cybertruck is so dope! Living in the Bay area, we hiked a lot with the kiddos... just tried to make the best of what we could do safely. Stay safe!
Gorgeous Trip. Beautiful scenery. Love our country 🇨🇦 !
Oh man.. Canada is so beautiful... love our homeland.
Great stuff Leon !!! Thanks for bringing us along. Can't believe you didn't use the AP more often.....Time your Supercharging along with when you would stop and eat, looks like you did that sometimes. No poor experiences at SC was a plus. People sometimes worry about range, what if we can't get there, or if it doesn't work. You traveling back through US more directly to get home ?? I know it would be more "boring", but see other things you haven't seen ??
Thank you! Ironically enough, we were just looking on google maps the drive back to SJ via the states side only... its so much shorter and faster... 2K difference in distance.
It was a pleasure watching you and your family travel. Road trips are fun! It’s always good to see amazing scenery along the way! It’s definitely something you’ll always treasure! Appreciate you sharing your story!
100 percent agreed! The kiddos and us will remember this for sure. Thanks so much for the kind comment and for watching 🙏
(10:05) There used to be a Swiss Chalet in Amherst NY (suburb of Buffalo) before it closed in 2010. I used to go all the time while attending the University at Buffalo.
No way! They had a swiss chalet in the states ..too bad it didn't work out
Thanks for letting me enjoy all the 3 Videos. You are really a sweet and positive family. Never been to canada but it looks interesting. Greetings from germany.
I really appreciate the kind comment - thank you!
Great viedo man, Although I would prefer to sit in a Toyota or Lexus for a trip of such length. This is insprational.
Thank you for sharing this amazing journey with us. My model Y is arriving in a few weeks, can't wait.
Amazing! You are gonna love it!
Just finished all three episodes in one sitting, and what a fun ride this must have been! Great cost/km and such a beautiful nature you guys have experienced! Looks like it was a lot of fun :) Great production and well done producing this! It makes me want to buy a Y and go roadtripping everywhere :)
Thanks so much!! I appreciate your kind comment ✌🏼
Great series! Your positive attitude makes this fun to watch. Can’t wait to get a Y!
Thank you 🙏
You should look into plug share for non Tesla charging.
Thanks for the tip!
Loved the videos. When I saw your first one I was thinking of buying a Tesla. As I watch the last one, I have had a Model Y for 2 weeks. It was great that you were answering questions on your trip that I had both before and after I bought mine.
Thank you! Nice... congrats on the new ride!
That was Great. Much appreciated you sharing your journey.
Thanks for the kind comment for for watching!
Thanks for sharing, I am picking up my Y this weekend!!
Hey, I was just curious wether you got bought FSD or not?
Niiiiice!! You are going to love it!
@@tommyvercetti7854 unfortunately no, I just can't justify spending 10k on that at this point.
Hey Leon! Thanks for your videos! It's really nice to see how a family make use of the car! We're getting our model Y tomorrow, so thanks for the free supercharging! Make good use of your miles!
Thanks for watching and you rock for using the code - thanks so much! How's the car? Everything good? Hope you enjoy it!
@@LeonChai couldn’t be happier with it! I’m finding excuses to go wherever just to drive it! 😂
Awesome video and series. Watched all 3. Keep up the great work. Looking to get a Model X myself, but your videos helped with the EV experience in general. Thanks, new subscriber!
Thanks so much for watching and for the sub! I appreciate it
@@LeonChai You're welcome. Anytime.
The thumping sound you sometimes hear near the beginning of a charging session is totally harmless thermal expansion of the exterior wall of the battery box. Byorn Nyland did a few videos showing this and even reproduced it using a bathroom sink and hot water.
I'll check that out! Thank you!.. just so trippy to hear those bangs esp when I got the kids in the car charging..

i normally drive to Calgary and back multiple times a year and complain about it.... this looks like such a long drive!!! I cannot complain anymore... LOL
LOL. After this trip... a 5 hour drive to Montreal for example is a walk in the park now...ha
Hi Leon! I have been following along on your Tesla journey and I have enjoyed every single bit of the adventure! Your Tesla vlogs introduced me to the other content on your channel and I thoroughly enjoy your cinematic videos and photography tips. PS. Welcome back home! :) I live about a 10-minute drive away from Cathedral Town so that aerial drone footage was super heartwarming to see. Nothing like being back home after a long trip.
Thank you (neighbour!) ... I thought people would be tripped out seeing that big Cathedral if they didn't know....haha
Hey Leon, I loved watching your journey from Cali to T.O. I recently ordered a Model Y and used your referral code!!! Thanks for the FREE SUPERCHARGING!!!! :) Cant wait for delivery day!
You rock! Thank you for using the code! woohoo... 1000 miles of charging for the both of us ✌🏼🙏
@@LeonChai Exactly!!!! That's 1500 km for us Canadians!!!! LMAO
Drove down some really twisty and dark regional roads last night somewhere east of Ottawa and Autopilot was really impressive. And no phantom braking!
Man... I'm not there yet to do use the AP in the dark + twisty...haha
Great videos! Am about to make a trip from Seattle down to LA. The trust the system advice is super helpful.
Nice! That's a great drive ... esp all the way to socal. Man I miss the Mexican food there....haha. Safe drive!
I got so excited when I saw you guys stopped in Barrie lol! I've been watching this whole series and I am from Barrie, its cool to see how many different places you stopped in and the last one being my hometown!
Haha! Barrie is awesome....kids love skiing... can't wait to bring em there when this is all over
So much fun watching this journey! I don’t drive an electric car yet but looking into it regularly! Would love to take a trip like that either way
Thank you for following along!
hey Leon thank you for sharing your adventure it was a very enjoyable video do you have the full self driving package I think full self-driving would have made it even better
Thanks so watching 🙏! I don't have the full autopilot and agreed in hindsight!
Leon, I hope to see more Tesla videos as you get to know your car. You have a talent for it! :)
Thank you... glad you enjoyed and will try for sure!
I think you and your wife had separate speed limit experiences with autopilot maybe because you have different speed limits set on your profiles? Greetings from North San Jose! Loved watching your video journey. My wife has '18 Model 3 Performance, I have '18 Subaru WRX Premium with Performance Pack and WRX Sports Package. :-) Glad to see another Subaru/Tesla family.
Man.. 2 things I miss now.... living SJ and my old STI...haha. I'm actually considering another Subbie again..hehe
@@LeonChai, my WRX is my second one and our third Subie. Love those cars!
You make me excited to when I get my Y. Hopefully early next year. These are the kinds of road trips I dream about with my fam. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! You are gonna love the road tripping with the Y!
Thank you for making this series, charing/ range is always my concern about getting a tesla. It's super helpful for someone like you to show people what is a long road trip looks like in a tesla.
Glad this is helpful and thank you!
What an amazing time watching your videos! Keep making more!!
Thank you!
Glad you made it home safely and welcome home!
Thank you 🙏
Damn awesome series. I enjoyed every second of it. Question though if you’re wife is almost 6 ft tall how tall are you??? Hahaha
on tip toes? lol
This was a great video series. Really moved me into purchasing a model Y
Thanks so much for watching the series! 🙏
Check out the latest software update, gives you a % option for speed limit (far better for me, so your not fixed at 10 mph over in a 30 and a 70 for example) and allows a toggle to let you set AP at your current speed, which for me is what I have used historically in other cars. I have found phantom braking to be awful if not downright dangerous driving in the UK and on holiday trips in France and Italy, even on dead straight roads with no traffic at all. I've stopped using it completely, fan boys will tell you the new beta is a big improvement.
Ahhh... Cool! I'll check it out for sure. Just did the update. Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for the video series! I just picked up my Y this week and it's intended to be my road trip EV (I've got a Bolt as my daily driver around town). Good to know how well camping in the back of the car works out and how well the auto-pilot helps with the drive. I look forward to seeing more Model Y content on your channel in the future!
Congrats on your new Y!
Great video. Very fun and informative. Loved it.
thank you 🙏

Great content bro! I love it.
thank so much 🙏
"Canadians are so friendly" Truer words have not been spoken. Bummed that Swiss Chalet is not in Whitehorse YK
I wonder why Swiss Chalet is only in Ontario?
Oh man maybe I should road trip in my Y up to Canada!
Hi Leon Chai, I watched all your 3 videos. Very nice. We are going to exactly follow what you did. We decided after watching your video ). But we are moving next month. Bit worried about the snow. Did you successfully import your model Y? Forum information are misleading and they say many modifications need to be done on the Tesla car in order to clear the papers and register the car in Ontario. Tesla is not supporting it seems. Is that true? please share your import experience. Thanks.
Loved all three of these vids - keep ‘em coming! Keenly interested about winter mileage 😝.
same here...lol
@@LeonChai 😂
Amazing we’re glad you guys are home safe. It was beautiful to watch! You inspired us to travel via car more. We would like to know make about the Tesla because we plan on buy one very soon. If you can I know it’s really cold up there.
Thanks so much and for sure!
Yes! I have been waiting for the final episode. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for following along!
What a great series! Really enjoyed seeing how the model y handles for such a long trip. Thanks for the upload. Excited to see what else you come out with. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you! I appreciate the sub too!
That was an amazing journey and I’m so glad you were willing to share it with us. Honestly one of those that does so much research on products before I buy. And right now, I’m about now into Spring to decide on the model y for sure. I just can’t figure if I want the performance or the range model but I’m pretty sure I won’t be doing what you just did. Then again....if we ever make it in the Americas to spring might consider taking a trip from Texas to Canada. I hope you and your family well, I look forward to seeing the winter stuff on the car....AS WELL AS winter stuff/salt under the car. Looking forward to it. Thank you.
Thank you! 🙏 ... The performance Y is just so sexy! No regrets on the LR.. just envious of the power..ha. I was saying to my wife.. we could always do the 2K software speed boost as a happy medium ..
Welcome home brother!! Great video. I’m hoping to order my model Y probably next year. Fingers crossed let me know if there are any flaws with your Tesla
Thanks brother! Sweet! Go for the performance model ...haha.
Thanks for your videos so far and look forward to more highlighting life with a Y. Thinking about a Y from Giga Berlin in due course.
Been reading a lot about the Giga Berlin factory and the Y build process.... looks incredible.
