- This video is dedicated to the memory of guitarist Alex Dunn, who passed away in May. I met him several times over the past 15 years or so, and he was always smiling and very interested in what was happening over on my side of Canada as it pertains to the guitar scene. We had talked about working together, but sadly it never came to be. He was beloved by his students, and was deeply interested in exploring new works for the guitar, as well as arrangements. I think he really would have liked this Brahms arrangement, especially since it is filmed with his old student Simon Farintosh, who will be taking over Alex's duties at the University of Victoria School of Music. It is a bittersweet opportunity for Simon, but the spirit of Alex, who had worked there since '91 will live on.
The piece itself is something I found irresistible to arrange, and I think it works surprisingly well on two guitars, however, one of those guitars needs 8-strings!
This was filmed during probably the hottest night of the year in a church without air-conditioning. However, the church was booked and Simon was moving to Victoria so we persevered!
Very special thanks to Ricci Ebron who endured the tortuous heat and helped to film this video.
Guitars by Martin Blackwell and Jeff Sigurdson of B.C., Canada.
Great homage to Alex Dunn; I am sure she is proud of your outstanding work. Thanks for sharing this gift with posterity.
I always loved this piece on piano
Se transporta uno al cielo ......bellísimo!!!!
Muchas gracias
Absolutely gorgeous rendition of this otherworldly piece. One of my all time favorite classical compositions.
I have been listening to this piece for over a month now every day as a piano piece and I just started to see if I could make a two guitar arrangement but was getting frustrated with all the low bass and range of the piano and how to manage it on two six string guitars...and then this video pops up and I cant tell you how much I appreciate this...absolutely stunning piece of music...Bravo guys!!!
Thank you so much for this beautiful tribute to Alex! He loved his Brahms and this brought back memories of playing the famous sextet variations with him. All the best gentlemen.
Thanks Stephen! I knew Alex was a music aficionado, so I should have known he was a huge Brahms fan. Hope to see you out west some time!
@@DrewHendersonGuitar Wait did you move west? I am usually there twice a year to visit family.
Very wonderful! Brahms is always worth a listen!
Thank you! It was impossible not to arrange this, it's just too beautiful.
What a beautiful tribute to Alex. Simultaneous condolences and well wishes to Simon
Bravo!
Fortunately for the listener on youtube, we do not have to endure the heat to listen. Perhaps this beautiful playing was enhanced by the heat? It certainly sounds wonderful under your fingers. Thank you for sharing your backstory and talents.
I was looking forward to hearing this! Beautifully played guys!
Thank you, Drew and Simon! This is exquisite! I have long adored this piece, especially since it was composed after Brahms thought he was "done." All good wishes.
Thank you Daryl! We thought we were done too in that hot church lol.
I need to lie down and take a nap. I'm too full of rich phrasing and sweet tone.
Absolutely wonderful!!!
I studied with Alex for part of my undergrad a while ago now, Brahms was something he got me to play an arrangement of. I got the impression through the way Alex talked about interpreting the music that Brahms was somehow important to him. This is a very fitting homage
Thank you.
Superbe! Merci infiniment pour votre engagement envers ce magnifique instrument qu'est la guitare classique!
Stunning. What an amazing arrangement and huge range on both guitars.
Wow, what lovely resonance and musicality
Thank you so much !
magical
I love that song!! One of my favorite piano songs
Yup! Me too :)
Сочетание 6-ти и 8-ми струнных гитар сразу заметно на слух! Это у Вас не часто случается, похоже впервые - мне очень понравилось! Предыстория вызывает уважение, спасибо!
Sublime!
But now I have this visceral need of listening to all Brahms (my favourite author) piano music arranged for two guitars
Thanks as always Drew! More reason again to come to Vancouver! Very beautiful tones and playing! Best.
I'd love to come to B.C.! All my former duo partners seem to go there.
@@DrewHendersonGuitar I have hung out a bit with Mike after Vancouver Guitar society concerts, good guy. Saw him play with Anna Pietrzak last year. I was also in attendance when HK performed at Pyatt Hall. I enjoy what you are doing with your UA-cam presentations. Such great quality. I would love to know more about your recording methodology signal chain etc. But hey I'm just an adult student enthusiast Blackwell gang member! Take care!
Wonderful as always, thank you
So beautiful and such a heartfelt tribute. 💕
I am happy to hear this beautiful performance
Yay, more 8-string! Fantastic playing by both of you.
Thanks!
Brahms should be transcribed for guitar more often. Very good job with this one!
Agreeed!
It's great that Simon is playing this piece with you. Fantastic!!!!
He is a great duo partner! I think we really worked well together, and the rehearsals were a lot of fun.
@@DrewHendersonGuitarthat's great to hear from a guitarist who speaks and knows the art. 😊
Stunning! Arrangement is perfect.
Very moving arrangement and tribute. Incredible sonority from both guitars with excellent audio capture. Bravo!!!
Thanks so much Rick!
Drew, Im Listening and Watching, how you play since 2019... Please, just dont stop Playing, and Video Making. You are great at those two arts. 🎨 What you are Creating is a Meditation. Love from Sri Lanka. ❤
Oh my god, how can you do this majestic cover…. When do you publish? I need that so bad
What becomes of Michael Kolk? Is he doing a solo career?
Michael moved back to Vancouver, got married and had a baby!! I’ll actually see him this week to catch up. I think he’s playing in a few ensembles out there. For now I’m doing a series of collaborations with various musicians. Simon was the first, but then also moved to British Columbia haha.
I was thinking the same... 😊
@@DrewHendersonGuitar Good to hear this!💫 Michael was my first guitar teacher, and Simon is my second. I've been enjoying the music of all four Canadian Classical Guitarists for a long time, including Tariq Harb. The four of you truly inspire me-thank you for bringing authentic guitar music to your audience. I’m proud to be an immigrant to Canada because it has given me the opportunity to listen to your incredible playing❤
First time I hear it on guitar, it's perfect, as usual, but so far I think I prefer on piano.
I recommend this version: Brahms: Intermezzo A-Dur op. 118 Nr. 2 ∙ Lars Vogt
on the hr-Sinfonieorchester - Frankfurt Radio Symphony UA-cam channel.
Thank you! Yes, this piece is belongs on the piano, but it’s so fun to play it with Simon. I love that recording you recommended:)
@@DrewHendersonGuitar Thank you :)
