    This song and video literally inspired me to pick up the violin.
    I had been wanting to for years, but after watching this, I couldn't hold out any longer. I have been self teaching myself for the past 4 months now. I can finally, play the song, not great mind you.
    Just want to say amazing video thank you!

      @A320 REMF Keep in mind, I had not picked up a violin before. I had to tech myself everything. EVERYTHING. I'm sure more experienced violinists can get it down, much much quicker.

    I just love the folksiness to Boccherini's music so much I just had to leave another comment. As a matter of fact, speaking of folksiness, Beethoven employed Laendler (a folk dance out of southern Germany and much of Austria/Bohemia) with such amazing depth in many of his musical compositions.
    What is so amazing about Laendler is that as a simple folk dance many a young prince in his evenings with nothing to do would go a carousing among the local folks at night to amuse themselves with the local ladies, and so they learned this simple but very graceful and elegant slow dance. As the princes demonstrated to their peers their ability to dance this way in princely competitions, a guy and his son, junior, decided to created this amazing music to dance the Laendler to which we now know today as the Strauss waltzes. Which by the way, no longer resembles the beautiful Laendler folk dance it once was but was used to great success in the Sound of Music film.
    Mozart and some other composers employed Laendler as welI very successfully. I believe quite a bit of the music from the baroque and classical era employed simple folk tunes. Here's the problem I encounter when I try to listen to classical or baroque music most of the time: much of it sounds like something in a box elegantly surrounded in beautiful wrapping and exquisitely tied up with ribbons and bows. How can I hear the folksiness of the music in that? On the other hand, Boccherini for the most part, just gives you his music in a simple box; no wrappings, no bows. Open the box and these exquisite tones and fanciful tunes surround your ears ... and your heart!
    I'm glad of heart that it took a film to bring this music more to the public's attention and other musicians as well. Listening to Boccherini and playing his music has contributed a lot to my enthusiasm and skill as a lover of the violin and playing this wonderful instrument. I hope there are many who will appreciate what I have brought to attention here. Try a little more Boccherini; your violin my like it!

    For those who are interested, the music actually comes from Boccherini's "La Musica Notturna Delle Strade di Madrid No. 6......this is also known as "String Quintet in C Major, Op. 30, No. 6".

      I must have missed your reply, never got a notice from youtube, but no I am not, I will have to join! Haven't had as much time to work on this as I would like (teacher has me busy doing other things like learning 3rd position now) but I'm going to keep working on it. Just bought myself a nicer violin that resonates really well so the pizzicato sounds much better. This scene in the movie is actually what made me want to play violin back when I was 14. I know I started late at 29 but I'm 10 months in and loving it. Currently halfway through Suzuki book 3, taking lessons every week and learning 3rd position.

    "And a hearty har, haarrr boys. A little rosin on the bow and lots of salt in the step!" This instruction is not only wonderful but has some comical wit as well ... which makes the whole musical narrative a lot of fun ... and the word "fun" is also in the word functional; a little explosion that went off in my own brain.
    Heh, heh! Bye the bye, Michael was comical in the way he projected the expression of his eyes throughout the adjusting muscles of his slight facial movement ... while Pierre seemed to radiate, "Lead me, follow me, but please don't get in my way!" Absolutely brilliant characterizations!
    I sometimes wonder why Boccherini isn't given enough attention by orchestras and smaller musical gatherings about all of his music. It's absolutely brilliant what he composed throughout his life.

    • @richardplante6992
      @richardplante6992 5 років тому

      Oh my God! Thank you for noticing my comment which I very much enjoyed writing because I felt so strongly to put into words the wonderful energy your musical comedy presented me. I do play but not as well as I would like. I have a copy of a Stainer (signed inside) which is cracked on the top at the moment in several places. I had loaned it to a friend of many years (we're still friends) who has played occasionally as a guest soloist for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and other smaller orchestras. He had it with him on his travels a year ago and his plane was forced down due to mechanical issues. But because he refused to bribe a customs agent when requested just before re-boarding his flight after the repairs to his plane, he was seized and spent 3 months in a jail cell. Meanwhile the customs agent had taken my friend's property with him to his home and in that space of time my violin became damaged. I'm going to take to Hratch Armenious, a well known luthier here in Toronto and have him do the repairs because it does have a very sweet tone. I've tried many different strings over time and then discovered Pirastro Oliv strings which make my violin sound really great. But then I discovered Warchal Timbre and Amber strings and those allow the very best tone out of my Stainer along with (after trial and error with rosins, most of which I gave away) my choice of rosins: Vienna's Best, Andrea Solo and Andrea A Piacere. If I had to use just one rosin though, it would be Andrea A Piacere. I paid $300.00 in 1982 for my Stainer (already pre-owned, well cared for) and through much trial an error with rosin and strings I was told 2 years ago that my Stainer sounded like a $10,000.00 instrument with the Warchal Amber strings and the Andrea A Piacere rosin. So I have come to appreciate the combination of very good strings and rosin adding great quality to the sound of a violin and to not overlook this combination. Thank you Fiddlerman for asking if I play but I didn't feel comfortable just saying yes which is only one word so I written about some of my experience with my Stainer. I hope you enjoy reading!

      @1stfiddlerman  5 років тому

      @@richardplante6992 Glad to hear it. Hope your Stainer comes back to life after Armenious is done with it. Cheers and thanks for the tips. I too used Andrea for years. If you ever feel like experimenting again, try the Yumba rosin that I fell in love with after Andrea.

    Love it, I read a bit of the behind the scenes on that movie, turns out the actors worked hard to get the fingering right even though they actually couldn't play the pieces that well. Any chance you could add "Ashokan Farewell" to the tune a week series? It is the piece that was made popular by the Ken Burns Civil War TV series.

    do you think a beginner would be able to play this?Ever since I watched this film since I was a kid, about 17 years ago, ive wanted to play the violin purely cos of this duet at the end. I already play/have played guitar for 15 years. Do you think it would be easy for me to pick this up?

    • @1stfiddlerman

      It depends on the level of the beginner. It's probably not a beginners piece but with a lot of work, you could achieve it. Good luck and thanks for watching. Let me know how it goes.

Cause I'm looking for violin that will be okay for beginner player like me, (I'm playing violin only 3 and a half years ) and while I saw your one of the last videos, I'm really liked the sound specific of that instrument, but I'm interesting to know wich strings do you used in this video and the one that I saw couple days ago, the most new one.... Because im not sure if it's be worth it, to buy this tipe of violin with "steel core strings" or with the "upgrade to prelude" ones... Hope you will be able to answer me us soon as you can! • @1stfiddlerman
      @1stfiddlerman  6 років тому +2

      Perfect pitch is rare. I don't have perfect pitch. I can tune my instrument without a tuner but I can't hear notes and tell you what they are all the time. Very few people can do that either. Relative pitch or being able to hear intervals is helpful but you don't need to have that to tell if you are playing in tune either. Hopefully, you can tell if you are a bit high or low and that really helps. :)
