Hey guys, it's been a while! A lot of you have been wondering what I've been up to so I thought I'd give you all an update. In order for me to be the best teacher I can it's really important for me to keep pushing myself. On top of some personal goings on, I reached a point with my last video where I felt kind of stagnant like I wasn't learning much new. I was very happy with where I was with synth programming but my interests in music production far exceed just that. I've learnt so much since my last video including but not limited to sound design, processing, mixing, music theory, arrangement etc.. and I can't wait to share it all with you. Don't worry, synthesis/sound design is and always will be a huge passion of mine so don't expect those videos to stop. What you can expect however is much more music production and sound design videos outside of the synth, to really take your tracks to another level. I also want to take this opportunity to say thanks to you guys. Your support on this channel is the reason I've been able to have the luxury of taking the time to really dive into all my various areas of interest in music production and develop my skills further. You guys are the best. Let me know down below: What area of music production do you most need help with? P.S. My new website is now live with some new sounds: synthhacker.com Also I made a new twitter if you guys want to harass me: twitter.com/TomSynthHacker Peace x
Dude your sounds are still my favorite out of everyones on the internet, glad you are back! Most of the sounds off my upcoming EP are from sounds I designed from your videos.
Yo Tom you're a fantastic teacher, and I don't feel that way about every youtuber who makes a video explaining something. I don't have a twitter, do you have an insta? I'd love to follow you
Legitimately was going through some of your old videos yesterday and read your comments about being patient and VOILA my prayers have been answered, welcome back Tom!
FUCKING YESSSS IVE BEEN WAITING SO MUCH FOR THIS DAY!! I missed ur voice man so soothing. Im excited for the future vids, I'd love to learn more sound design as well as other stuff, especially songwriting and arrangement
Hey Tom, thanks for the informative video! I was wondering if it is possible you can do a layering video from scratch that demonstrates the entire process ranging from selecting the synth patches, to EQing and processing them individually, and overall just a complete start to finish walkthrough of the layering process? Thanks.~!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been having trouble understanding how to layer, but like you mentioned a lot of people tend to try to combine big sounds together. I've been shy from EQing certain sounds within their own frequency space due to them not sounding good alone. But thank you for opening my world and showing me the right way to it, now I understand the layering concept. My concept before was like layering meat on a sandwhich. But now it's the same thing but just layering it the other way 😂. Much love man
Hey SynthHacker, does it make a difference if I use those same Saw waves in one instance of Serum instead of 6 like you have in the tutorial video? Of course I understand you have more control over every individual OSC with & different voicings. But you the quality be that much of a difference? Best regards
I get the concept but every time I try doing this it just doesn't work. The synths just start competing with one another even though I feel like I did it right. I chose different sounding synths, changed their octaves for each one, EQd them into their own space in the mix, and put them all to a bus and added a glue compressor. Does anyone have any tips?
If you watch closely, it seems like Chords 2 and 3 are the exact same (duplicated notes in different octaves. Chord 1 has less layering, Bass and Sub has no 2 notes at the same time. Sub has a few 'filler notes' removed, but is essentially the same as the Bass.
If you have layered synths with each one taking up space in the mix then how do you make room for leads and chops? since obviously the main synth sound is gonna be in the same range I'm confused
i compared this method of layering to just using one patch (by soloing the group, then the single saw patch) and just using one patch sounds significantly better.. I don't know if i'm doing something wrong but using several and having an eq on each one in its own range actually sounds pretty bad and also weak compared to using one patch :/ i have no idea how this layering thing is supposed to work in this case
Sounds great. Could you talk on how to layer synths like in the big synths part in EDM(bigroom mostly) songs when they introduce the melody for the first time? (examples: Aylen Parks & Tom Crusher - Never Back Down (0:59) , New World Sound & Thomas Newson - Flute (Original Mix) (0:59) )
Hey Tom, thank you so much for these. As a beginner these videos are indispensable and you are awesome for making them! I would like to put in a request for you to try and show us how AC Slater gets his "growl." A good example is his song "Bass Inside." They are like most bass house type sounds but they seem much more precise to me. Thanks again for these awesome vids!
Great video. Had any luck with layering a few oscillators of a different wave form or using samples like vocals as a layer or does that throw off the vibe? I'm going to try it but just wondered if you had any experience

how are the little lowpassed bass phrases that are mixed in to the drop made my man?
He's back
YOU'RE ALIVE
(by the way this sounds heavily influenced by Illenium's Say It remix lol)
how come your env in serum is shaped like a pluck but the note holds out?
I get the concept but every time I try doing this it just doesn't work. The synths just start competing with one another even though I feel like I did it right. what are the name of these presets in your serum pack???
Sounds great. Could you talk on how to layer synths like in the big synths part in EDM(bigroom mostly) songs when they introduce the melody for the first time? (examples: Aylen Parks & Tom Crusher - Never Back Down (0:59) , New World Sound & Thomas Newson - Flute (Original Mix) (0:59) )
How come your cpu is still low with neutron and izotope and so many serum ? if i use two serums i already get problems :(
Is the bus compression on the sub too or is that not routed to the bus? Sorry i dont use ableton so i cant tell just by looking.
Great video mate well done :)
Thank you, your presets und tips are inspiring me a lot
OMG Tom you're god your tutorials are so helpful :o
How long!!!!!, but it's very useful
