  • I bought this 2006 Honda GL1800 gold wing to just do a review and sell on but fell in love with it and kept it for another year. It's now sold but gave me some good memories. It's much better than the Honda ST1300 Pan European but is much heavier.

    I bought my first GoldWing last week. 96' 1500 35k 1owner.
I bought another 2017 yesterday. I've owned everything, built custom HD's since I was 15, I've won shows, had my bikes in all the mags ect. GoldWing is by far the nicest overall bike I've ever been privileged to ride. Simply awesome.

If anyone thinks these bikes can’t handle, there’s a video on You Tube of a guy on a bright yellow Gold Wing schooling some sport bike riders on the Tail Of The Dragon in Tennessee. I rented one for a few days three years ago and by day two I realized that I could use it in place of my vehicle. It’s an incredible machine.

I have had Goldwings for years, I am on my third one and I live in Tennessee. I rode the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway yesterday. You will be surprised at how fast this big bike really is. In the hands of a experience Goldwing rider it is amazing. We surprise other riders with this bike. As for the flexing it is designed into the suspension for comfort, install a Super Brace and problem solved. I hope you keep it you will be very happy. When using the centerstand keep side stand down in case it gets away from you. Ask me why I say that. By the way that ride yesterday was 470 miles in 9.5 hrs, this is what the Goldwing excels in. You did not mention the Linked Braking.

I've been riding an '03 Wing for a few years and have been coast-to-coast across Canada and the US three times. For me, its a perfect touring bike - which is what it is really designed for. Here's a little safety tip/comment on your video. When you are placing a large bike on the centre stand, you really should leave the side stand down until the bike is up. This provides just a little bit of extra drop safety.

I had Goldwing Fever really bad late last year from watching all the Goldwing videos on UA-cam. I also have a Honda VTX 1800 F, beautiful blast of a bike and a great bike, just wanted a bike with more comfort (and more comfort for my lady on the back) and extras. I live in beautiful sunny SoCal with so much to see and do not too far away. And with the great weather means we are FORCED to ride our bikes almost year-round!! Found and bought in February this year an 08 Goldwing with all the extras I wanted for a great price and only 18 K miles incl ABS, GPS, cruise, heated seats and grips, extra lighting for visibility, hiway pegs for both driver and passenger, floorboard footrests for driver and passenger, heal toe shifter, of course stereo, Intercom, luggage rack, reverse. And it had new tires and maintenance was all current. Is very comfortable to ride. Oh and it has a backrest too. You have to be careful at slow speeds cause it’s about 900 lbs., have to apply a little foot brake and give a little throttle otherwise she’ll drop. Takes a little getting used to at 1st. Can do filtering most of the time but it is a bigger wider bike ( about 4 feet wide) than other smaller bikes. Love the bike, is solid, well made, just like my Vtx 1800 (still have and didn’t want to get rid of), well done Honda! Happy to say I still got the Goldwing Fever which I’m sure won’t go away for a long long time!! Cheers!

After owning and riding a Kawasaki ZX14 for the last 12 years and now drawing my pension , the time has come to share the joys of motorcycling again with my wife . Just purchased a used (very) low mileage 2016 GL1800. Always wanted a wing, already have a 1983 GL1100, so the new GL compliments it nicely. I wanted the comfort of a car with the practicality of two wheels, so the wing fits the bill for me. AS you stated I also find the gearbox just a bit clunky. Going to change the oil to 10:40 weight (Motul) to see if it improves matters a bit. The bike is a so smooth to ride with minimal vibrations from the engine. I find the handling through the twisty bits is fine, I tend to gently `drive` the bike through using just a bit of throttle. As per your comments in the video the mirrors are excellent. My location is not too far from you - just down the road near Eastwood. Will probably take the bike to MFN bike night one upcoming Wednesday evening.

    @soujrnr 11 місяців тому

I just bought my first Wing about four months ago! I've ridden a number of bikes over the years (started riding in 1985). NONE of them comes anywhere near my Wing! The only thing I wish they'd have done better is the suspension. However, living in Tennessee affords me the privilege of being near Traxxion Dynamics, and so next spring, I'll be having them do the "full monty" suspension upgrade on my scoot! I named her Pearl. She is Arctic White and gorgeous!!
I was intrigued by your statement about slow speed maneuvering. I felt exactly as you stated. I also tensed up, but not because I can't do slow speed work. In fact, my slow speed skills were quite legendary with my previous 1500 Suzuki Boulevard cruiser. I could turn that beast on a dime with my wife on board. The Wing, with it's higher center of gravity, caused me quite a bit of tension and concern as I got used to that. My cruiser weighted the same as my Wing, but the center of gravity was much lower. So, that was a big hurdle (still is, actually) for me in fine-tuning my slow speed skills on the Wing.
Having reverse is an absolute life-saver for me because I broke my neck in three places some years ago and was paralyzed. I'm obviously much better now since I'm riding a Goldwing. However, my injury and subsequent surgery left me with little upper body strength and a life of constant pain. So, even the slightest incline is brutal for me. For that reason, the reverse is wonderful!
Another thing about the Wing is that it doesn't handle only like a big touring bike. It handles like a sport bike in many regards. It'll take corners wonderfully with the ability to lean far and even scrape hard parts if you like. It is agile, very powerful, and VERY capable of riding hard through the twisties. Living in northeastern Tennessee also affords me the opportunity to ride some of the best roads in all of North America! No, it's not going to take you down the highway at 180 MPH (and no one should be going anywhere near that fast anyway), but it'll get you where you want to go in GREAT comfort!
Thank you for your great thoughts on the bike! It's the last bike I'll ever own! Ride safe. Ride well. Ride often!

My reply is obviously late but if you bought the 06 for 7k, you did well. I bought an 08 with 26k miles in pristine condition for 10k this past June, but it’s loaded with a few expensive goodies and has the comfort / Nav / audio features. I’m happy with this bike.

Oh dear, I've finally watched this having previously purposely hid behind my hands ignoring what I can't see. I think I can see my future now lol. What a cracking review Russ. I do like real reviews like these because this is what you ride like in reality and not round a race track testing every limit the bike has. Concrete arse! Hahaha like it. I inherited an '82 GL1100 Aspencade a few years back and still have it. These days I don't ride it much, mostly just running errands occasionally and during the winter months when it's too cold to ride my other bikes comfortably. Basically, I kind of hate riding that old bike (too slow, ponderous, just plain old). A newer GL1800 would be something else entirely, based on the good experience I had renting one in Las Vegas. I put on 600 miles in one day, ran it hard (actually really had to try to drag the pegs), and stayed quite comfortable the whole time. My only gripe was the bike being too hot for comfort above 85F. Newer Wings and the big BMW K-bikes, even used ones less than 10 years old, are probably too expensive to really tempt me, but I'd LOVE to have one in the garage alongside my FJR and Super Duke.

Honestly, this is much better for US roads than European roads. Yes you can get it around corners but it clearly is made for going straight as much as possible, it's for touring and more about enjoying the travelling in a smooth sort of way rather than enjoying the bike in and of itself. If that's what someone wants that's fine by me, I wouldn't drive a Harley Davidson if they gifted me one, yet there's plenty of people who shell loads of cash for those. To each his own.

Once you are used to the size of the bike it is really easy to ride and it is supremely comfortable even when you are over 70 years of age! It's a Chesterfield-sofa on wheels :-)
But seriously, my instructors all rode GW's and back in the day (when I lived in the US) the GW was the bike I found beautiful & wanted. However, the looks nowadays do not appeal to me and its weight would be a major concern for me. Looks is something you can become accustomed to, I'm sure. And let's not forget it was & is quite a revolutionary bike compared to the Europeans back in those days. And most certainly the price & all the options. The only known problem my instructors encountered quite regularly, was oxidation and rotting of the (stock) exhausts. But with your's being non-stock it will likely be not a concern for you.
I do wonder of the amount of buffeting for your passenger, if I listen to the recording she made, but not sure if that was indeed the case. It may not have the looks & flashy of modern-day tourers, but the enjoyment makes up a lot for that, I would vote this one for a keeper. With time you will likely siwthcd gears buttery-smoothly and it will be a smile from ear to ear to ride it. Hope you thus keep it! The only thing needed is getting a house-number and some plants. Just kidding! :)

My 85 Interceptor is wicked fun, but I'll be taking my Pacific Coast of my tour. And be looking for a Goldwing.

0-60 is about 4.1 sec, top end about 130 mph, I get around 40-45 mpg

The GoldWing WAS as sports bike when it was first launched. But Honda's desire to compete with HD in the USA meant it had to go on a lard diet, then another, and another... - just to keep up! I remember the very first one in Derby. I saw it outside Palin's. It always was a bit of a slab though. I can see the appeal, but it's not one I'd buy. The older I get, the more I appreciate lightweight machines. I can lift the back end of my Bultaco 350 Sherpa, and a VFR is heavy enough for a road bike.

I bought a 1984 Aspencade as we came out of lockdown in 2020.
I only bought it coz I wanted to go home to the 80's, away from the madness.
Keep it one summer then get rid - just for a laugh
    Goldwings are a joke, right?
    Wrong!!
It's now November 2022 and I just sold my "proper" bike - the Goldwing's going nowhere. Such a fantastic bike.
Those who take the pi1ss have never ridden one.
Nor, most likely, do they have a big daft aerial and a cassette player.
    I do. And I smile a lot.
In't that what bikes were for? Before we all started taking it terribly seriously?

Though probably a bad financial idea, I would love to see you test ride one of the brand new ones with the DCT auto transmission. It would be interesting your impressions since you are so fastidious about the fueling and subtle dynamics of bikes. Plus I have a feeling you would find it a very interesting thing in general to experience. Nice to see a new video from you.

Very deceptive machines - I took one out for a test ride once and was amazed once I'd become acclimatised - silky smooth engine with oodles of power, and the gearbox was a dream - takes a bit of planning but you can hustle along if you do it right - you can see why they are popular in the states where the roads are bigger and wider.

I would love to have a go on the Goldwing but I think they have too many gadgets on it, and for someone like me that's not technical minded would struggle, the cop pit looks like an airplane. I like the look of them and I bet they are really comfortable to ride.

I am a 56-year-old woman. That just purchased a 2012 1800 Goldwing white. That thing moves it turns and it’s a Cadillac on the roads love it I ditch three Harleys and a CTX 1300. I want to know did you keep the bike?

I sold it simply because I couldn't warrant keeping it as I don't really tour. Loved the experience though.
