  • Annapurna Devi, doyen of Senia Maihar gharana, daughter of Ud Allauddin Khan, sister of Ud Ali Akbar Khan and wife of Pt Ravi Shankar......... she is perhaps the ultimate Surbahar player in terms of technique and approach (we haven't heard Ud Sajjad Mohammed right??) She carries the Senia Dhrupad legacy and is one of the most respected living legend of Indian classical music.

    The more I hear her the more her music seeps in deeper and deeper. No acoustic acrobatics, no flashiness to attract the listeners attention. Pure Amrit it falls drop by drop!

      It's not that. Baba said " If you put Ravi, Ali Akbar and Pannalal on one side and Annapurna on the other, still Annapurna's side will be heavy."
      Baba also said Ravi is 40 % of me, Ali Akbar 60 and Annapurna 80 %

    RIP Pt. Annapurna Devi. Arguably you were one of the finest of finest surbahar players all around the world. Even critics say both Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustd. Vilayat Khan were no match to you.

    I've never heard her playing before, yet here I am with tears in my eyes. She taps into the instrument in a way that I can't believe, it's not of this world, but a higher one.

    the surbahr has the deepest tone of this family of chordaphones - but sometimes, like the sitar, it produces a scolding note when played too fast and not too carefully. This divine artiste has played it such that the scolding note never is heard. the sonorous tone tranquilizes and transports one beyond thought.

    It was 1997 and I started learning sarod playing from a disciple of Ms Annpurna in Bombay. My lady teacher was a Bengali sarod virtuso whose husband was an executive in Indian Oil Corp. I lived in JVPD area and she in Sat Bangladesh area. One day at her house I learnt who taught her sarod playing and was taken a back at the tragic background perpetuated by Ravi Shankar in his greed and chicanery with his own wife, daughter of his guru Ustad Alluding Khan Sahab and ruining their son's life which ended in his death at a very young age. Ms Annpurna lives in a flat in south Bombay somewhere near Nariman Point and despite my repeated request with my teacher to let me meet Ms Aanapurna I could not as Ms Annapurna has literally put herself in self imposed exile. She meets extremely limited persons. What a colossal loss to our great Indian Classical music!

    • @ritadatta1249
      @ritadatta1249 6 років тому +7

      Ravi Shakar may have been a great musician but I'm sorry to say he wasn't a great human being. Nor a good father. Unverifiable rumour has it that he discourage Annapurna's public performances because he did not want her to outshine him. How petty-minded can one be! In fact a well-known sitarist, a student of Ravi Shankar, complained how he never promoted his students, either. Experts say Annapurna was the greater artiste. But the dignified person that she was, with age-old Indian values, she practically exiled herself from social life. That was a tragedy. If she had continued to play she would probably have overtaken Ravi Shankar in fame. As a woman, how I wish she'd done that!

Dont't forget they are illegal immigrants from bangladesh!

He travelled from one part of India to another part..
