Good to see you again. Those tips are super helpful. Thanks a bunch. Must admit.... I am super curious about the variance in bond strength as well as the amount of entrapped air. If you are looking for an idea for the next video: cut a strip out of the middle of each of these sections, take a look for bubbles with a magnifying glass, and then flex/bend/scrape until the fiberglass pulls from the substrate. It would be really cool to see how the results stack up. Stay well. Hope your shoulders are doing better. (I actually winced a little when you were carrying around the sheets of OSB.)
1. Dumpster Dive a foam couch cushion of the required dimension and glue to plywood. 2. Wrap in 5mil plastic. 3. Lay up and wet out as many layers of CSM, Roven Woving, S-Glass ( whatever ) off to the side on parchment paper. 4. Transfer this to cushion and wedge upward where you want the laminate using precut sticks to compress the foam.

Nicely done Andy. Personal preference is a 1.5 down first and let that start to set then come in as you did. I know they say you can use it as you did but I have had better results this way especially with uneven surfaces from having some younger crew members prepping. Very happy you made it clear the situations for other methods ..if it can sink...do it the first way ... otherwise ...dealers choice

Hi, I've just bought a a 38 ft. catamaran. The topsides are damaged from inappropriate fender placement during storm surge at a marina berth. There are indents/ rippling along the entire outer topsides, both sides. I intend to sand these out fill and fare then initially use 7.5 oz cloth. I have a 38 inch roll which is just over width for the area that needs to be repaired. I want to use 1 continuous length. How would you recommend I secure this cloth before applying the resin? Would the spray adhesive be appropriate for this task?
Really enjoyed the video and learning more fiberglassing tips. Glad to see you doing that. I tried some overhead layups but didn't like where air got entrapped due to gravity working against me. Maybe you could do a video on how to address white spots in glass layup, when and if and it needs to be delt with and how to approach it. Creating a test surface took longer than laying up the three test panels so Bertram projects might be quicker in the long run.
Great video. Just what I am after as I need to do a repair on the bow stem of my 19ft cruiser. The gel coat and 2 layers of woven mat has worn through to the timber stem in places. I was going to fill holes with fibre reinforced filler then two layers of woven mat over the top. Then fair edges with fibre reinforced filler. Two coats of micro spheres and sanding to finish.
Thanks for the time and effort you put into the videos and teaching this ;-) I have a old RV trailer that has a very thin aluminum skin on the outside, the bad thing is that the aluminum skin is bubbly in various areas and has some hole due to corrosion. My idea is to remove the aluminum and the thin plywood that the skin is glued on to and then put new 4mm plywood and put fiberglass on the plywood instead of the aluminum. The aluminum is probably only around 0.4 mm thick. My question is : How many layers of fiberglass would you apply ? And what is the procedure after the fiberglass has dried to make it water tight ? It is one of these lightweight european trailers which uses like a sandwich construction (plywood - styrofoam - plywood) Regards from Denmark Chris
Thank you for this video, I'm about to start a rather ambitious project with a i/o conversion to a euro transom and will be adding 2 or 3ft to the hull. Was apprehensive about flipping the hull to do the glass work. This played right into the question of how I was going to do the glass underneath
Apparently, poly is thinner/less viscuous than epoxy, as it looks to penetrate 1708 much better/faster. During my foredeck-from-underneath project, I pre wet the glass (approx. 15"x40") atop a sized pc. of sign plastic, allowing it to soak in all around the edges and half coat or so in the field. After a thin coat of neat resin rolled on the overhead, I applied a graded coat of colloidal silica thickened epoxy. That made a sticky "paste" to grab and hold the wet cloth. The stiff plastic sheet held up the cloth while I pressed it in place. Now pretty well stuck fast, I rolled on any additional/remaining resin, fin rolled as needed and touched up with brush. Without the "paste", the 3.5 oz/sf of resin was too heavy to self-support; as I found out with the first section.....ooops!
At what point do you choose to use Polyester vs epoxy? And I'm trying to understand why you are applying on top of a gel coat, wouldn't it be better to sand off the gel coat for a better bond? I though gel coats was met to be applied on top of the finished glass repair. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm new at this and neck deep at restoring my very first boat while trying to understand how this all works. Always great to see a pro in action, sharing his knowledge. Maybe you’ve talked about this before in some video but why aren’t you using a respirator or mask of some sort when working with polyester? I’ve only worked with epoxi but have read that that’s one major differences that polyester stinks and has dangerous fumes?
Question... i didn't catch whether or not you catalyzed the resin before you rolled it onto the board? Obviously you did catalyze the resin before rolling onto the 1708.

Wouldn't you know my first fiberglass repair is going to be on a crack I found under my boat. It's about a 18 " long and definitely looks like it's through the gel coat. It almost looks like a deep scrape from a bad trailer bunk or something. I'm going to dremel it out and find out if the fiber glass is damaged. I cant find any damage inside the hull.

Interesting watch. I am a novice at this and learn lots by watching your videos. It’s been awhile, but I seem to recall a demonstration you did to see what happens if you don’t wet the back of your fiberglass. I found it interesting on this demonstration for the second and third example that you would apply the glass without wetting the back. I am sure that probably weighs into why that is not a good option for structural repairs, but it still seems that there would be a bigger risk of delaminating on examples two and three…. Am I off base here?
At the point where the roller started to dry out and pour the glass was just as important as the rest of the video. Thank you for all your hard work……………
Not related to this video, but I could really use some guidance. I’m building a dory. Ply on frame, fiberglass on the outside. Southern yellow pine and fir marine ply on the inside. I’m trying to figure out how to finish the inside of my boat. I’m m in Florida so it will get wet but it will live in a covered shelter. Every time I get advice there are five more people telling me why it’s terrible advice. Epoxy coat, penetrating epoxy and paint, oil, just paint, What’s a fella to do? Any advice from you or your community would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this video. I was almost wanting to avoid, covering a ceiling. With 3M 77 it seems so incredibly easy. But i don’t fully understand why you won’t use this for structural shapes? Could you please 🙏 explain this further? Also do i understand correctly, that the lighter the chopped strand math, the easier it becomes to work above your head? And which resin would be lightest to work with? In my case, I don’t have any structural strength to consider. For me its just laminating with the thinnest cloth or math possible on insulation foam, to seal of the roof. The goal is to keep the weight down, and make the ceiling as light as possible.

How would i do a raised floor for a motor cover I have a 30' 1972 cruiser and it has a sliding glass door that walks out over the motors. I have redone transom .But now trying to figure out the cover/floor with a way to get down to motors and be able to walk around on it..just wondering if you had any ideas for me or a video I could possibly use to get some wisdom.
Andy, one of the issues i have when using resins and fibre-glass is the wastage of rollers, etc. with the resin setting. What is your work around, or do you just expect this wastage?
This comes at a great time for me. Im about to seal up some core up under the deck and the sides(sorry can't remember the name of that part). Factory core is still solid but they left much exposed. Plus the modifications I'm doing as well. I have a question if you don't mind. Rewatched when you put the coosa in the Bertram transom. Others claim you should use a toothed trowel to apply the resin. You used a yellow spreader(bondo spreader is what I would normally call it). Which makes more sense to me. I feel there would be less air trapped that way. Im looking for maximum strength possible. Cold weather has me delayed on dropping my core in. I know this is a patreon style question but I don't have an account or any of that stuff.
Out of pure curiosity: Have you ever tried working with Flax in a combination with resin a a composite? It is gaining popularity over here (Germany / Europe), a little more complicated, but promises to have a way smaller Co2 signature than glass fiber + epoxy / polyester. I could see some interesting applications for it, especially inside the boat, as it has some real nice optics of its own :) And of course: A great and very interesting video (as always)!
When the Spring rush levels off then I'll be back on the Bertram project. Right now there just isn't enough time in a week to make much progress on the boat (at least not enough for a well rounded video), so these types of technique vids are much more manageable given the time constraints :-)

I would like to know if epoxy over 3M77 glue does work as well as with polyester resin (in terms of being dissolved by epoxy vs. Polyester because of the styrene in polyester, and no styrene in epoxy) ?

Only exception *MIGHT* only be demo #3 with the spray adhesive (but I'm not possitive about that). The other 2 demo's would work the same :-)

This comes at a great time for me. Im about to seal up some core up under the deck and the sides(sorry can't remember the name of that part). Factory core is still solid but they left much exposed. Plus the modifications I'm doing as well.
I have a question if you don't mind. Rewatched when you put the coosa in the Bertram transom. Others claim you should use a toothed trowel to apply the resin. You used a yellow spreader(bondo spreader is what I would normally call it). Which makes more sense to me. I feel there would be less air trapped that way. Im looking for maximum strength possible. Cold weather has me delayed on dropping my core in. I know this is a patreon style question but I don't have an account or any of that stuff.
Out of pure curiosity: Have you ever tried working with Flax in a combination with resin a a composite? It is gaining popularity over here (Germany / Europe), a little more complicated, but promises to have a way smaller Co2 signature than glass fiber + epoxy / polyester. I could see some interesting applications for it, especially inside the boat, as it has some real nice optics of its own :)
And of course: A great and very interesting video (as always)!
What about working on a curved surface? There aren't any flat panels on my sailboat hull. Seems like avoiding wrinkles would be impossible.

When the Spring rush levels off then I'll be back on the Bertram project. Right now there just isn't enough time in a week to make much progress on the boat (at least not enough for a well rounded video), so these types of technique vids are much more manageable given the time constraints :-)

Great demo. Just out of curiosity, is there any significant difference in the amount of resin needed for the different types of applications? If you were trying to cut back on waste, which method might be better?
I would like to know if epoxy over 3M77 glue does work as well as with polyester resin (in terms of being dissolved by epoxy vs. Polyester because of the styrene in polyester, and no styrene in epoxy) ?
When vacuum bagging with epoxy spray adhesive is used extensively to hold the matrix in place before applying a vacuum.
