  • txba.ly/v2fh - In this lesson I dissect one of the most impossible looking techniques that Stevie Ray Vaughan used. Used in songs like Tin Pan Alley and Dirty Pool, this fast "tremolo" picking technique requires speed and endurance. I'll talk about how to gradually increase your speed, the importance of consistency and endurance, and talk about the back-and-forth movement that Stevie did as he used this technique.

You might not notice this comment since the video is pretty old, but this entire video is pure gold. Every word was golden. Thank You!

Great lesson. Another player who uses this technique is John Mayer. He's a SRV nerd. I think he uses his wrist more.

Hahaha he literally turned the guitar lesson into a gym exercise lol that was the second I hit the like button because playing SRV takes that , muscle building! He was a monster.

I've been watching your vids for a couple of years now, and have rarely commented, but in this one you AGAIN show something that is so rare in society as a whole these days, that I feel it's worth a note (Pun Intended) - You show humility..You're obviously capable of playing anything you set your mind to learning, and yet you say you're not good enough???
    DUDE, you are the man!

I heard a jazz guitarist say that playing built up her bicep, so it's not ALL in the fingers or wrist. Depends on whether fine control or strength is called for. Anthony's good about drills and exercises and so on. He;s the total package.

I have two. The one I'm using here (a VAC 40 early prototype) is tucked inside a plexiglass shield off to the side. The one you see is the one I reviewed, looking good, albeit silently.

YES YES YES YES AND YES!!!!!!! I've been feeling a long time that my speed is what actually is holding me back, that I have resources and good ideas to play but i can't put them to practice just because of that. Not like I want to play fast all the time, but just having the chance of doing it when it feels right is what i need. Thank you very much for the lesson, This is extremely helpful.

fantastic! Another technique i've been trying to implement that you've shed some light on! Not sure if you remember, but you once commented on how my "hello friends" intro was funny on me playing against a dirty pool backing track. I think i tried to do something similar in that video.

Of course I remember you, you're one of the most regular commenters on here ( although I don't reply much here, I do read all of them). I forgot that the video you did that on was a Dirty Pool track though.

A couple things I've noticed, when I'm strumming from the elbow it's not all that taxing. The trick is, use the rounded end of the pick, (I found this out by accident, when I tried to maintain speed, my pick would rotate around in my fingers to where it didn't have to work as hard, Yes, picks have a mind of their own) the other thing is not to dig in. Let your pick glide over the strings. Once that's automatic you can concentrate on your left hand.

For the other ones (player's perspective) I have an M-Brace which is useful, but not very sturdy. Re-Axe is soon coming out with a much better stand that I plan to get.

Thanks for the great info as usual, Anthony...any advice on tremolo picking? I know you don't use it that much in the SRV style, but for surf and some EVH style guitar it's used quite a bit.

Those exercises are designed to work your rotator cuff and the reason why you put the towel in between your elbow and body is so that your elbows don't flare out in between your elbow and body is so that your elbows don't flare out deltoid instead

Joe Martlew if you haven’t seen yet, for dirty pool at least, half step down, 10-10-10-12-X-X, four chord is 3-3-3-5-x-x, and 5 is 5-5-5-7-x-x. Can move from the D to the G with middle finger, can play D minor etc. should be able to find dirty pool licks on here somewhere

Those are zexcoils. I have one strat and zexcoils ended a long search of trying many sets of pickups. Very lively, open sounding, dead silent and they quack like no other pup I’ve ever tried in the in between positions. And they rule for those fat SRV tones

I noticed on the 2nd Montreux version that he was using both wrist and elbow. Like in the "upside down v" pattern it seemed like the down neck portion he'd sort of sling his wrist into a fast flurry. Going back and forth like that gives the passage sort of Doppler effect. Plus SRV was the most precise picker for how seemingly wildly he's move his arm. Rude Mood's a great example.

Hmm... I think its okay for the muscles to tire, but it should not be due to tension, and it's usually never good to practice speed above your endurance level or endurance above the speed level you can comfortably maintain. Relaxation is still key through-out. Tension gets conditioned and it kills everything else, and so many guys try to muscle through that by just applying more force and strain where the opposite is needed.
Workout for technique should not kill ones muscles, then it's done wrong.

I am wondering about what chord that is. I have always wondered what he was playing. I thought it was a chord that he moved up and down the neck. Is that something that will be covered in the complete lesson?

  • @lesd2633
    @lesd2633 5 років тому +1

Hmmm you e built up your muscles enough to feel it in a couple weeks huh? Wow. Or maybe it’s just that you e limberd up. I also submit that the function of moving your arm around covers up fudging your strum as does using the fretboard area to strum as a backstop. Try this over your pickups and remain in that spot, then judge yourself for speed and accuracy and insurance.
If you want to check out a really great fast strummer check out good old Roy Clark. Rip.
