    I've had this about four months and have found it to be an aggressive and powerful rig. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxjo0FLo5z3Y_qUcT3vSlOqpMaMdFjvsXa I've used several others in the past and the Sun Joe surpasses these, easily. I note that several people have commented that it bounces on rocky and compacted soil. I believe that would be the case with all tillers - the ground does need to be "broken", either with a larger tractor type unit or with a shovel, and rocks need to be removed. I'm living on a Pike silt loam here in the midwest and the Sun Joe turns my garden to bug dust in two quick passes. I use a technique where I do a short 2 foot run then pull it back and let it go over it again.

    The absolute best video on tuning a Mantis. I rebuilt a carb a few years ago and this video was very useful. I recently replaced the carb and once again the video was priceless when getting the Mantis ready to till when there isn't any settings to work with.

    Top job mate. Many thanks. Ive just come in from a marathon mantis session. Took me 90 mins to get the bugger started. Then, followed by a 2 hour long carb trial and error session that resulted in huge amount of expletives issued - much to the neighbours disgust - and a big lump taken out of my middle finger from starting it god knows how many times. Watched this. Sorted in 30 mins. Ta very much.....

    Excellent instructions. Mantis should provide a link to this video on their web site.
    My little Mantis is going on near 30 years old. It has been a real work horse, well work pony I guess, and has rarely failed me until this week.
    It wouldn’t start. After watching your video several times I grabbed a screwdriver and within a few minutes my tiller was working like it was new again. My carb adjustment screws do not have the limiter caps you mentioned (added to newer models?), just tension springs, and were way out of adjustment. It took several full turns to get them both seated. No wonder it was getting ornery.
    My wife thanks you. My dog thanks you. And I thank you.

    Thanks so much for this video. I was really getting frustrated, couldnt get my Mantis to run. I bought a new carb and still would not run right, bogging and shutting down when i gave it gas, almost gave up and had decided to buy a new one. I gave it one more try and made the adjustments in your video, runs like a champ! Thanks again.

    Thank you so much for this excellent advice! I needed to till my potato land, but the Mantis engine just kept on choking when using the carburettor. The best advice was to remove the plastic hubs from the High and Low screws so that they could actually be turned properly. So, after a little adjustments I got my over 10 years old tiller working again like a dream and the whole big area is now ready for my potatoes. You are my hero, Danbdrums! Why doesn't Mantis manual tell the same thing? When they are on, it is impossible to turn the screws according to the instructions.

    Opening choke after first firing was probably the most helpful advise. Tuning the jets seems very sensitive but I finally got the engine running well. I almost gave up untill this video encouraged me. I suggest using fresh fuel. Use Gasoline without corn alcohol if at all possible. You can buy premix chainsaw gas at Home Depot etc or go to local airport and buy aviation gas and mix your own. AV gas is noticeable difference in starting and running. AV gas works well in your boat motor too.

    OK. After seeing this, and many others, I finally found a chat elsewhere that would have saved me hours of messing around with the carb adjustments. First - very important to not run 2-cycle motors lean (not enough fuel in air) as it can burn the pistons and kill your motor. So, for $12 I got a new carb, fuel lines, air filter, gaskets, etc. all in a kit and next day to my door (yes, $12). Then, took the exhaust apart and sprayed carb cleaner in the exhaust filter assembly to clean. Now- for adjusting the carb: turn the Low and High adj screws all the way in (not too tight, you'll ruin - just til stop) then, back out the L screw 2-1/2 full turns and the H screw 3 full turns; It should now start but run rich; so adj the H screw in (less fuel to air) small turns at a time until it runs fairly well; then idle the engine and adjust the L screw in until idle sounds better; then adjust the Throttle to idle smoother; then adjust the H screw so the throttle will rev quickly and to a nice high rpm; then adjust the L screw to as nice an idle as possible; then adjust the throttle adj to best idle; Good info was that the L is the fuel to air at idle , while the H is fuel to air under power; Happy tilling;

      I'm going to buy a carburetor rebuild kit as the plastic diaphragm is warped and it was not winterized.

    Those plastic limiting covers on the carb adjustment screws are the pits. Keeps you from doing what you need to do. The good part is, once you get over your fear and grab them with pliers and pull, they come right off the splines of the real adjustment screws and THEN you can get to work. Thanks for the clear instruction on your video, I watched it a few times, got mine running and now I get calls from people wanting me to work on theirs. It's so common of an issue, a guy could almost make a living out of fixing them in the springtime.

    I think I nailed the H (high) adjustment...real smooth between idle and pedal to the medal. But the idle is sketchy. Not sure what to adjust. Sounds like it could stall sometimes....yet the axle turns all the time as if the idle is too high but it sure doesn't sound too high. No idea whether to tweek the L (low) adjustment (and which direction??) or the idle screw. Sometimes the idle will also rev a little on its own.

    This video is helpful, but my mantis might be one of the originals model 7225-15-02. Anyway as far screw adjust both high and low would only move 1/2 -2/3 of a turn would never move a full. So considering the plug was black changed it and the air filter and with new gas mix I adjusted the carb as best I could and ran good, but the throttle seemed to stick on fast I had to manually push the throttle lever to slow, but I can work with that.

    • @danbdrums
      @danbdrums  9 років тому

      Hello. Yeah, have you removed the little plastic clips that sit on the screws? Also. If you notice there are no blades or tines etc on the tiller so when opening the throttle to full there is nothing to go forwards

  • @buckwb3375
    @buckwb3375 9 років тому

    Thanks for posting the video, but I have some questions about it all. I have an older Mantis tiller and no real experience in carburetor adjustment. I have taken off the red and white plastic screw covers. Now, where should the high and low screws be to start with? Did you say the red (high) adjustment should be turned all the way in (clockwise) and then turned back (counter-clockwise) 1 rotation? What about the white (low) adjustment, where should it be to start with? Turned all the way in? Should it be turned back? And the idle--where should it be to start with?
    Thanks for any info.

    • @tortron
      @tortron 8 місяців тому +1

      The lower screw is your idle speed adjustment. It adjusts where the throttle cable stops. You should tune the low circuit flathead screw to best runnibg and then the Phillips head one in or out so it idles nicely but doest turn the tines

  • @nilolee2426

    • @tortron

      The big Phillips head one is your idle speed adjustment. The two others are high and low rpm fuel circuits. Low is mostly at idle and high is more when you are full throttle

      hi Barry.
      if the tines are attached and they spin it might need tiny adjustments...
      if the tines are not attached and it spins...Sometimes this is normal (unless they spin quickly)
      when cars are lifted on special ramps and idling in neutral the front wheels sometimes spin....I believe it's the clutch...

I can let it cool down for 20 minutes or so, and it will run fine but it starts shutting down again. It's obviously a feel issue but I can't dmfigure it out.
