- The plaintiff gave the defendant a security deposit on an apartment he was renting. Before moving, the plaintiff learned the place broke multiple code violations, so the plaintiff is suing for his deposit back. The defendant argues she's been renting out the apartment since the 1980s and hasn't had any issues with previous tenants.

That old lady knew what she was doing 🙄
The reason why She didnt want to go upstairs, is because she knew it was dangerous up there lol!!
This comment right here!!!! She didn’t want to twist an ankle OR get a mouse up her skirt!
😂😂😂
Let's take it one step further. The defendant KNEW that she did not have the Necessary Certificate of Occupancy, to rent, which therefore without it She could not rent. she also knew that if SHE went up they would more than likely be demanding their money back.
bLACK
CRIME
MATTERS.
And that’s why she didn’t want children there either. Liability
All these comments against the plaintiff SMH….
Here’s a young man who is respectful to Judge MM & never cuts off the shady defendant. He doesn’t act hard, entitled and as if he knows everything. He’s listening and learning.
He brings his mom and represents himself well. He obviously trust & respects her to give him guidance and THAT’s the kind of relationship you want with your parent(s). Not the kind where you represent yourself & your family in a bad light.
We’ve seen time and time again where the “man” shows up (with parents) and obviously show no accountability or respect for the law and the parents make excuses for the kids behavior as if it’s ok….
We should give him the credit he deserves. He proved his facts and is trying to do right and not getting taken advantage of. His mom was making sure he was protected because of her life experience and she lead by example making sure the shady defendant took care of the violations. Most 20 something year olds aren’t going to microcheck these things. They’re so excited about getting their own place, the overlook these details. Thank god for his mom to call the city because had he moved in and then try to hold this woman responsible, Judge MM would have done the “why didn’t you check the apartment thoroughly BEFORE you moved in, etc…” and this would have been like the many other cases we’ve all seen on People’s Court.
@josefwashere -
So well said❣️
Agree 👏
Nailed it!
That’s a grown man who’s almost 30. Why are you infantilizing him? And as for taking accountability, that’s a moot point because there was none to be taken on his part.
He's not a kid he's 26
Where does this defendant come off thinking she can do "as is" on an apartment? It's supposed to come with an assumption of livability.
Old lady trynna scam 😂
Seems she's successfully scammin'😒.
She been scamming for decades...
Broad has been scamming her whole life.
@@datgurlky1
She doesn’t look broad at all…she is tiny!! not nice to call that to any woman, maybe in your family only!
She didn't try to scam, she is, as probably has been scamming!!
she scammed!!! she knew she didn’t have the certificate bye lady!!!
“we were working on it”
It’s giving me “entitled “ she knew she didn’t have a COA and rented it anyway.
I’m all for the plaintiff, glad he won!
Me too that lady was not right
Had mama not had the good sense to call the city to take note of those violations they wouldn’t have gotten that deposit back… I’m glad they got it back.
Seriously!! Justice was served and that old woman knew better
This man’s mother is so cute. The smile on her face, she’s so proud of him. M😊
The old lady is trying to act all sweet and innocent she knew what she was doing. That’s why she didn’t go upstairs to look at the damages. Good thing he didn’t sign the lease.
I expect this lady to start her story with “picture it, Sicily 1945”
Sophia Petrillo, okay, can tell a story, okay, much more, okay, effectively than, okay, the def, okay, endan, okay, t. :)
😂😂😂😂
Golden Girls! Well, she made sure she was well coiffed.
😂😂😂😂
She came in dressed CLEAN though😊
This lady tried to act so unaware and valunerable when she knew what she was doing.🙄
She admitted that she knew you had to have a certificate of occupancy? When did she act like she didn't know
Typical.
@@jesnrbrt4evr11She was still trying to say that the City of Rochester will work with you when she was talking to Doug in the hallway. In the courtroom, it took Judge Milian pinning her down and making her say she knew you could not rent without a certificate of occupancy. She was stubborn and believed she knew better than the Judge.
@@juliecranford534 I disagree with your enterpratation of what we watched so I guess ill agree to disagree 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Plaintiff and mother were right ti drag this shady ass old lady to court! Glad they won.
If i could I'd love to live with my parents even if i was older than 26 yrs old . My mother died when i was 11 and i haven't lived at home since i was 14 . He's blessed he has a momma like that.
I don't think there is anything wrong with an adult child living at home with their parents. I don't see what the big deal is. If the parents don't care noone else should either
I’m so sorry. And I agree, especially with rents being crazy high, and student loan debt.
This is not the same situation. She needs to let him handle his own business...period.

Thank you so much for reminding me why I shouldn’t read the comment section before watching the whole video! 🫠😂
@MsVirgoBeauty1823 I learned my lesson on that too 😂😂😂
Its her going through the garbage for diapers for me😂😂😂
Same! WTF are you going through my garbage for??!
“May I ask how old you are?” Judge hides her reactions well, because I know she was thinking “You’ve got to be at least 36”. 😂😂😂
At first i thought the mother was too intrusive but she was looking out because she added that wisdom.
She probably felt bad because she’s the one who told him about the place.
I think it came off that way because of how the defendant described her.
The Mom was a bit much. The son was doing well presenting his case and she kept raising her hand to chime in. He's a 26 year old father, AND a true Momma's boy. I would not want to be in a relationship with him. He needs to stand on his own two feet!
@@SDP5230 how was she a bit much, she barely spoke until the end smh. He has a girlfriend and a baby, he's doing just fine without you.
@@SDP5230pretty weird trying to assess a man’s entire relationship with his mother and decide you don’t want to be with him (as if he’d want to be with you? 😂) over a people’s court segment lmao
Scammers come in all ages
Once again, a mother is undefeated
The plaintiff is lucky the tenancy didn't work out - if the downstairs neighbours are so nosy they have to immediately tell the landlord he had visitors (including the baby), it would have been an absolute nightmare to endure for the term of the lease. Total busybodies.
That defendant can’t tell a story to save her life. She sounds cooky!
Plaintiff seems like a good guy. Truly
riiiight.
Judge thought he was older lol
Everyone does.
Me too!😮
Sure did look it
He has one of those faces where when he actually does get older, he'll look younger 😅
It’s just his eye bags. He looks tired. But you can tell he’s young.

“Yeah I’m 26”
Judge “…ok😅”
I was thinking at least 40 too 😂
right. Judge thinking he's almost 40. LOL
Right.. the judge probably thought he was older and wanted to chastise him for bringing his mom to speak for him. Then she learned he was younger than she thought.
Amazing to me how the judge didn't go off on the defendant as much as she does other people in the same situation 😮
I wonder why…??

What difference does his age make? Even if he wasn't in his 20's, it doesn't matter.

when young you're automatically stupid
I think it’s because for his age he acts more mature than most men in their 20’s! Pretty sure JM knew his age before that question.

Old lady is a scammer for sure. Taking money and then refusing to rent keeping deposits. Shane on her. I love this plaintiff soo kind and respectful young man
I don't believe her about that diaper. I believe he did wrap it up. I think she opened the bag. That made me give her the side 👀
Damn, Granny tried it!🤣🤣🤣
Doug at the end wasn’t letting her try to shade her way out of not having the apartment up to code and debate him on what the law was. Did she forget he’s done thousands of these shows?? Bisssh go get your damn certificate 😂
Annnnnnnd momma still put that woman on blast for still not complying & code violations 😂👵🏻🥊👩🏾🦱
The interviewer at the end just rubs it in 😂😂😅
😂 She doesn't need to be a landlord 😂
That landlord is a predatory creature and I bet she tells herself she's a good person because she dresses respectably.
If the plaintiff is telling the truth the defendant breached the contract. He said she told him that it wasn’t a good fit for him. So, even if she didn’t have a CO he should have gotten his deposit back.
Refund the deposit. Rent to the next person. Problem solved
Well as you see
Notice how she left that part out.
I heard that too. She backed out, not him. That's why you always have to record when dealing with people like her, cus they'll boldface lie. And most judges will believe "people like her."
That old lady is a whole scammer!! 😆
Judge asking how old he is when he said his first apartment when she herself still have her 22 year old still at home being a slob is hilarious.
Never give a deposit without signing the lease. That's crazy.
I was 29 when I got my first apartment in NYC and I took my parents to each viewing and my dad to the lease signing. They’ve been there done that, I haven’t. I will seek my parents advice in most major life decisions that I make. Whoever sees an issue with that probably doesn’t have a good relationship with their parents so they can’t comprehend 🤷🏽♀️.
Doug, she did know that prior to coming here 😂 nothing learnt here.
Right.
This young man is so well spoken and respectful. I know his mom is there, but she is also very respectful and helpful
I really don't understand the Judge's logic here. He absolutely should have been paid in FULL for the paint job. The fact that there was never an agreement for him to get paid for the work he did is completely irrelevant under these circumstances. He wasn't hired as a worker and he most definitely wasn't doing it just as a favor for that lady. He painted the apartment because he planned on living there a while and he never got the benefit of the work he did. And she certainly shouldn't get the benefit of a free paint job, especially when she legally couldn't even rent out the apartment in the first place. Besides, $200 to paint an apartment is a bargain. So she still would have made out in the deal by paying him because from the sounds of it, she needed to get the place repainted anyways. It seems like Judge Milian was trying to punish him by making him eat half of the cost just because she didn't like the way he went about getting the apartment before trying to negotiate the on damages.
I'm sorry but she shouldn't be letting her personal feelings about something affect how she rules on a case and especially not to use it as an excuse to punish someone financially. That's just wrong. It's legally unethical and literally goes against her judicial duty.
Ok is it just me or is JM always getting on to a certain demographic of people? That defendant was clearly a slum lord and JM did go in on her nearly as much as she tried to insinuate the plaintiff was trying to take advantage of this “poor little old woman” 🙄 bffr. She prob been scamming people for a very long time and no one has called her on her bs.
ok dont watch then u not changing her
@JohnDoe-hf5gn that was her legal obligation. She didn't do him a favor. She followed the law. She's prejudice either way.
She's definitely prejudiced. She a rich resident of Florida lol
You can’t trust anyone without shoulders . At least IMHO! 😊

LOL!!! I was noticing that!😂
Lol! 😂😅😂😅
I don’t like how the judge is acting towards the plaintiff as if because he’s 26 and this is his first apartment,it’s a problem or giving the vibe of he should’ve been out the house..NO,your kids should be allowed to stay home until they’re completely self sufficient so they won’t have to come back (unless they need to),be able to take care of themselves properly and won’t have to struggle..A lot of cultures do this some even keep their kids home until they’re married (in their 40z or 50z) so why is it frowned upon by her that we also do this,in the black community as well🙄
Because it's odd to see this anywhere in America. It's unusual for our culture
Mines definitely don't have no time stamp to move unless they start becoming disrespectful fr
It sounded like she was trying to figure out why his mom was helping him, she then even says yes I help my 20 somethings too. She might have thought he was a little older.

This defendant is a shady slumlord. The fact they have 3 inspectors and no certificate is very telling.
She didn’t want to get the certificate because she knew she would have to fix all the violations
He dodged a bullet with that old lady. Holy crap. Going thru his garbage to see diapers and worrying about a 2 year old playing peek a boo in the yard. She's crazy. And that would be an absolutely miserable living situation if he had to live there

Lesson: not all old ladies are sweet and kind. The young man and his mother were very respectful.
LOL He literally had to have his mommy come to court with him..🤣😅😂
People in their early 20's are just starting to figure out how to "adult," and how things work, and how to protect themselves. For that young adult's age and experience, I don't see anything wrong with him having his mother help him. She was also a witness to a lot of things that happened. We should all be so lucky to have a parent help us while we are figuring out how the world works, and how to "adult" successfully.
Who does this old lady think she is, analyzing a blue car in her tenant’s driveway, and to whom it may belong! Nosy. And concerned about a lady and baby coming to visit her tenant? Busy-body, overstepping her role as a landlord. Neither of those are any of her business! I agree with him when he said when a landlord doesn’t look at the place with you, that’s a red flag. The landlord in my new place didn’t come inside the apt I just put a deposit down on. Turns out, the apt wasn’t cleaned, painted and it needed a new dishwasher, oven and fridge 🙃
I think JM was surprised that the plaintiff was 26 moving into his first apartment paying $475 talking about "ive been saving forever"
