@@KeithJohnsonCustomWoodworking just watched a video your buddy Jason did with Steve Ramsey and he said film every little project bc people will always want a video. And it’s so true. My unsolicited opinion…you may think it will be to simple and maybe boring to watch, but for the bulk of people watching and subscribed to you that’s the perfect project to make us say, “I could do that one” I love seeing the advanced stuff you do, but stuff like this a guy could tackle with limited tools in a weekend. I like when you guys use the fancy tools like the one you have and are like you could use tape here, but I have it so I’m using it. Just like the domino, I want one but can’t justify it, and should probably learn the basics better anyway first. Love the podcast, and to anyone reading this if you are subscribed to Shopsounds, subscribe and give it a few episodes…it’s really good!
At the 9:51 mark of this video I came across the “NICEST”, “CLEANEST”, and, what I would most certainly call, the absolute “FINEST” wood joint(s) that I have ever seen in all of my 43 years on this planet!!! Man… that end joint is absolutely BEA-FUCKING-UTIFUL!!! Kudos to you my friend… KUDOS on a job that was very, very “well done”!!! You sir are a MASTER CRAFTSMAN and a very rare breed, at that!!! A rare breed that is, in fact, going away at an alarming rate. And what makes that rate so “alarming” is the fact that people like you (ones that possess your level of knowledge and skill and can actually work with their hands and build something) are simply just NOT being replaced by this “new generation”!!! However, on a more positive, yet sarcastic, note (which should help all of us “worried” Americans sleep better at night)… the president in, or around, 2035 and all of the ones that come after for the next 40 years or more, will be very good at playing video games and throwing hissy fits whenever they don’t get exactly what they want!!! So, just rest assured and sleep well at night, we do have that!?!?!?
Super appreciate that, man!! And you're right about young people not wanting to come up in the trades and would rather play video games and be on their phones. Technology is great ,but is also killing our society in many ways.
I've been wanting/planning to build the same type of mantel for my home. But my fireplace is 15 feet long from the corner of a wall. The existing mantel is concrete blocks and the fireplace is stone. A previous owner without any woodworking skills built a hideous mantel over the concrete blocks. Watching your "plan B" helped me decide that I should rip off the entire mantel including the original concrete blocks and attach the new mantel to a ledger board. Thank you! My ugly mantel has been haunting me!
Sounds like a fun project! And yes, sometimes it's best to get down to ground zero and build it correctly to ensure quality and the peace of mind knowing it was done right.
Great job Keith. Mitered boxes are hard to get right. And look at you. You did it all without a jig. Think I’m gonna stick with glue but the Thixo might be worth a try.

Ohhh! That was pickling my brain. I thought you'd put them on the front 😂. I thought it was just going to be one of those 'customer is always right' type of things.
Cured. Been watching lots of British dramas then, Keith? I liked this video. It was interesting to see you out of the shop again and I get to see you fit the items you made too. I liked that the customers asked for a way to hang their Xmas stockings too; a nice touch 👍 Have a good’un Keith. Oh, and I’m looking forward to the next podcast too.
Thanks as always, Chris! I prefer to stay in the shop, but it is nice to get out once in a while for an install. I have a big mistook renovation coming up, so that should be interesting!
Hi Keith, great job. Why didn’t you use your jointer to get a clean edge instead of the track saw? Just a personal choice or is it quicker with the track saw?
Great work, as usual. Love White oak. Just one question, is there any reason you didn't use a miter lock profile for the joints? We have a wood shaper and we are considering the investment in a cutting head that does the miter lock . Seems like a big time saver. Cheers
Thanks Gavin! I've never bought a miter lock bit after hearing so many horror stories about the setup and getting a consistent good fit. It's a great joint with a ton of surface area for glue, but I've yet to give it a try.
How is this the first time I’ve ever heard of Shop Sounds! I’ve seen Jason wear a shirt that said shop sounds and assumed it was a website where you guys get your wood working sound effects.
Hey Keith! Quick question for you. I noticed you didn't apply finish to the interior of the mantel. I'm making a flat file out of white oak and wondering if I need to apply finish to the inside of the carcass? Will it warp if I don't? Thanks Keith!!
Thanks Sean!! Yeah, those microfiber cloths are one-time use only since the Rubio hardens on there. I buy them at Harbor Freight, so they are relatively inexpensive. You can use blue shop towels as well which would be a little cheaper.
Great videos!! You are an expert in woodworking. But many of us don’t have all the equipment you have in your shop. So I am not sure if DIY is a term that applies to your art. Congratulations.
Thanks for the kind words, Cecelia! For this project, all you really need is a table saw (or circular saw with an edge guide) to cut the bevels and then some glue to make the box mantel.
Keith, great video, and techniques, can you share the details regarding the tool used for the joining and the HW, I don’t see it in the links, I’m starting a 9’ mantle next week and would like to use your technique
Great video KJ, as always, thank you for sharing kind sir! What do you use to make sure that your blades are tilted to exactly 45 degrees? Woodpecker square? Digital angle gauge? Either acceptable?
I sometimes wonder if you could glue an end grain veneer on the ends and increase your home's value by another 10%. But we might be entering diminishing returns...
You could have stopped at the intro...the finished, installed mantel shot was like, Wow!" I like that the client had foresight about hanging stockings...we would not want any "handywork" on the homeowner's part when Xmas comes along, (it's best that Keith should do the deed). Did you fire the shop helpers?
Haha. Thanks Juliet! I actually brainstormed that intro on the way to the client's house for the install. 😂. And I thought the stocking thing was a great idea, so I was glad I could come up with a solution for the client's request. And I don't know where Jerry and Lola were on this one. I probably kicked them out because of all the time on the miter saw and table saw.
I tried to do this but when i was doing the 45deg cuts on the long pieces on my table saw, I created a wave pattern. What's the secret to keeping that piece near the rip fence.
😆😂 Executive lounge! Hilarious. I realized after I posted the video that Jerry and Lola weren't in this one. Their fan club is going to be very disappointed 😬😼😹
I had to watch it twice to get my full length KJ fill. Throwing me off with this short video, Keith.

Keith - aren't those threaded inserts visible or, put another way, what did you do to make them not be visible the rest of the year? Thanks!
Well, they are below eye level and recessed just below your he surface. They aren’t visible unless you poke your head under there.
