I can tell you that in practice, in a situation with some drunk dude at a bar, you can put someone down with with Aikido techniques. I once sparred with a Hapkido master. It's similar to Aikido in the use of your opponents energy against them, and the joint manipulation. He just stood there and asked me to attack him with any forward strike. Something for all the people in here Aikido is a self-defence art. It is not an aggressive style. If one move works, do you have to use a hundred different ones? Like many style are for show not taken a person out. Like jujitsu , Aikido every move breaks a bone. People will not get up to keep fighting if it is real.
Good demo. We train in the same techniques, but I don't claim to be as good as Seagal. As far as martial arts, Seagal is the real deal. And by the way this is not choreographed. It's a demo. But the receiver does not know in advance what Seagal is going to do. They've obviously trained together quite a lot and know each other's energy. Some here are saying, "The little guy is flipping himself." Well yes, he is, because Seagal is applying joint breaks. The escape is to flip. If he doesn't do that he'll end up with a broken or torn wrist, elbow or shoulder. People shouldn't criticize without understanding what they're seeing.
If the assistant had tensed up or resisted... he would not land safely. The projection of the body to the ground if real...the only way the assistant survives is because he is relaxed..believe me.. when you resist and tense up.. and do not roll.... it sucks.. your face slams onto the floor and blood comes out.
The thing is with the flipping and summer salts is if they do not flip when he gets out of their wrists they will break their wrist if they do not move or get away from it he will break them that is the key to what he's showing also but in real fight some people can take more pain and they might break their wrist to get the hit in the first place so just practicing you can't determine someone's pain level sandwich punching you can practice speed and then I go I hit you and do this but unless they're getting hit nobody knows what they're going to do
I don't get all the "bullshido" comments. This video is of an Aikido demonstration. Seagal is a grand master of Aikido, that is a fact. One can argue (endlessly) how effective Aikido as technique is in real life combat but then that's not Seagal's fault or merit. Also Seagal's 7th dan at Aikodo (and his advanced knowledge of Wing Chun) make him a legit martial artist. That is again not something up for debate but a fact. Now as for Seagal's claims about his his abilities to fight beyond the world of conceptual martial art those are unproven. Since he has never been an Olympic or professional fighter he has no track record in that respect so one can only guess / decide whether to believe him and anecdotes about him or not. Personally I believe that even today and especially in his prime, in a "street fight" with his size and skills he could have taken out multiple men of average build and fighting skills or even a heavily built athlete with less than advanced fighting skills. On the other hand I doubt that either in a ring or in the street he would been too successful against a seasoned medium or especially heavy weight professional fighter especially against someone with mixed martial arts background.
Very well thought out post. I don't particularly like Seagal as a person (too many bad stories about his personality) but he definitely had skill in Aikido, and everyone always says "It takes a long time to get good at Aikido". So, it's obvious he studied it for some time. What I don't understand is how people attack his credibility as an action star by saying "But he never fought anyone 4 real" or " If he tried that in a real fight he'd get destroyed!!" but some of those same commentators give other guys a pass, like JCVD or Bruce Lee. Neither of those guys were professional fighters either and so far as we actually know never fought any one for real. Sure there's lots of rumour and mythologising, but no proof.
No strength isnt about your own body in this art you use your body and deflect there body weight against them, it's all about positioning, you could be 9stone and bring a 12 stone guy down its all about technique and understanding weight distribution 👍👍👍
If you watched all the chinese and Japanese movies - yes they were fake. But I saw Steve and another one of my teachers take out many people in a few seconds. If you ever meet a real fighter you will see the truth and know the difference. Like one of my friends said if it goes for more then a few minutes it is not a real fight or just two people that cannot fight.
*_I always thought Merv Griffin was before my time! I didn't know his show was still on the air in 1982!_* *_Does anyone know Seagal's young Japanese Student's name? I know he served as a stunt double in a lot of Seagal's earlier movies!_* *_I wonder if he's teaching today!?_*
The knife entry Steven was talking about is very real. The moment it passes the center, I can enter he says. He demonstrated it and caught the knife convincingly. I think Steven is really very talented. It's not his fault that Aikido has limited techniques and would not fare well in mma type of fights. If a talented person with aikido background augments his martial arts tool box with muy thai and catch can wrestling and some brazilian jujutsu, that person would improve. Everybody borrows from everybody what is useful. Of course, aikido would not do well in mma because it lacks tools to get the job done. It's not designed for that because its a traditional martial art.
It's very effective if someone grabs you on the street. If someone bigger pushes you, you resit and then step back and get them off balance . anytime you get your opponent off balance you have the advantage. Once the person is down run away.
No, but it's his fault that he portrays himself as someone who is unbeatable in fights, when he's someone who actually runs away from them in fear, or cries and apologies when he's called out
Back then he was a genuine martial artist that trained with top Japanese instructors like abe sensei isoyama sensei and tohei sensei and trained in kenjutsu and a bit of daito ryu Steven seagal ruined himself by film industry and the greed of his riches and that’s what’s made him how he his today a vein person wrapped up in his own little world as a martial artist myself If I had choice to train with Steve back in the 70s or to present day I would defo train with him as he was back in the 70s he seemed to have more passion back then as he does now...
I once saw a Bruce Lee technique that seemed to work for that. Involved falling on your back and meeting the thrown knife with the sole of your shoe, deflecting it back into the direction it came from. To be fair, it was a stunt but looked really cool. Bruce pulled it off.
Alex Scott I tried Aikido for 2yrs in U.S. It wasn’t easy and very expensive. Why I have a lot of respect for someone like Seagal to make it into a career before he was famous is truly amazing. Being able to have two dojos one in Japan and one in California is truly remarkable and their still open to this day.
My friend is a 4th dan black belt in Kyokushin karate judo he's been to Japan many a time before for competitions,he told me that if you don't utilise aikido at the right moment it's not going to be any good in a bar brawl etc..
Aikido is one of the best martial arts in the world. All martial arts are good. It's depend only to the people on how they perform it.. If you understand the principle of aikido, maybe you might not say anything bad about aikido. Just respect the principle of all types of martial arts.
It doesn't work in a real fight buddy. Deal with it. Try that shit on an amateur wrestler or mma guy who is trying to take you out, and will quickly learn what works and what doesn't
"One of the best martial arts in the world" that does not allow its student to train with full contact sparring. What kind of martial arts discourages its student to fight (in a controlled environment at the very least). I am not saying to go out and start picking fights. But if you don't practice with a resisting opponent who does not comply with your every move and just fall over, the martial art is a failure, will stay stagnant and not evolve with changing times. This is the reason why Judo, Muay Thai and BJJ are some of the most effective martial arts today.

@@PurushNahiMahaPurush effectiveness depends on the person who fights, and the situation/ environment. its controversial because most MMA thinkers use the sparring and fight experience in the ring as proven self defense martial arts, but in reality you dont want a imaginary ring, you dont wanna go on the ground for a submission etc, etc, its always the same story, its the same like 90% of cocky MMA fighters thinking they would beat DK Yoo, but without rules they would be fucked up very quick, its not the martial art who is effective or not, its the person who practice it. Walk into a dive bar and try that. Actually try that anywhere outside a dojo and youll find out people youre fighting against arent doing single pre planned strikes.
I think the main reason is because he is a friend of Vladimir Putin and became a citizen of Russia and so American deep state started a hatred campaign against him the last years.
Just a few things for consideration. Dubious claims about his Japanese past, numerous accounts of him harassing and abusing women, and his constant efforts to get more russian guns (and girls) into america, and his request to become a russian citizen as well as an American as well as Serbian.
He's twice as big, if not more, and still that fast and lethal Now Seagal was a nobody in Hollywood up until '88, so how did Merv get wind of him to have him on the show in '82??
The only reason people took him serious was cause of his size. If he was 5’6 tryna do this to guys taller than him he would of been a laughing stock. Those pushes and stuff might be able to work for him just cause he’s huge lol
After watching this I went to a local play ground and tried on some kids , this shit really works especially if you are 3 X their size !!!! Thx Steven , now I can go look for Ritchie and fuck him up !!!
People act like he’s fighting a kid but they forget that Seagal is 6’5”/6’6”. The dude is probably like 5’10” or 5’11” which is pretty average. Not to mention, this isn’t a “fight”. It’s obviously rehearsed because he’s showing the techniques, just like almost every other martial arts demonstration.

The hamburglar don't take break falls, so he went to Panda Express and kidnapped the cook. 😁
Even when first broadcasted the size difference made you say WTF 🤦🏻♂️
Its rehearsed the old man has his counter block out before the kid even kicks,
No shit sherlock!
hes showing specific techniques
Something for all the people in here Aikido is a self-defence art. It is not an aggressive style. If one move works, do you have to use a hundred different ones? Like many style are for show not taken a person out. Like jujitsu , Aikido every move breaks a bone. People will not get up to keep fighting if it is real.
I was waiting S S will say to boy " you attacked me wrong"
Grab my wrist, other hand, no not my other hand your other hand😂😂😂😂
Jackie Chan, If you were 85 years old and approached me. What would be your next move? Steven Seagal
An NCAA DIVISION 1 Wrestler would shot A Double on him faster then the speed of light ...

Steven....before the buffets
HAHAHAAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAHAHAHAHHHAHAAHHAHAHA
Steven has been really improved since they, he can do all this sitting in a chair now.
Damn, he was so thin back then.
And so was his hair
he was 35
now he is 67 and fat
Sleuth Entertainment he got fat cuz he ate that kid
whos he fighting a three year old
Lol, that's Matsuoka Sensei... a man that became a very accomplished martial artist himself.
@@AztecUnshaven well Matsuoka Sensei is an awesome actor too
Lol
The thing is with the flipping and summer salts is if they do not flip when he gets out of their wrists they will break their wrist if they do not move or get away from it he will break them that is the key to what he's showing also but in real fight some people can take more pain and they might break their wrist to get the hit in the first place so just practicing you can't determine someone's pain level sandwich punching you can practice speed and then I go I hit you and do this but unless they're getting hit nobody knows what they're going to do
Ever hear of a period? That's the longest sentence in the world.
That's like a super-mega-ultra-omega run-on sentence.
También estoy de acuerdo con gran parte de lo que dijiste. Gran habilidad en el Aikido, al menos eso no se discute.
@@iorekby JCVD has a legitimate record. Bruce Lee does not but his feats of fitness are reasonably well documented.
Strenght is a part of your body Man! I luck strenght, so technics are harder for me.
Steven Seagal is legit ! He is not a fake master
I agree. He was the Aikido champion on a tribe of pigmees 😂
This doesn't look good 🙃
...funny, you have to be 19 or over to see this demonstration in S. Korea.
Beautiful choreography hahahaha!
*_I always thought Merv Griffin was before my time! I didn't know his show was still on the air in 1982!_*
*_Does anyone know Seagal's young Japanese Student's name? I know he served as a stunt double in a lot of Seagal's earlier movies!_*
*_I wonder if he's teaching today!?_*
Haruo Matsuoka.
Yea bad idea too try take him on in a real situation
Aikido is effective. It is dependent on the person that practices it. It is also dependent on the teacher. There are alot of bad teachers
No, but it's his fault that he portrays himself as someone who is unbeatable in fights, when he's someone who actually runs away from them in fear, or cries and apologies when he's called out
At 0:32 the dudes leg gives out before steven even trips him ..
Christian Brownlow You have it all backwards.Steven Seagal began training in Aikido with the express intention of eventually making movies.
I want to see Steven seagal try his aikido against Mike Tyson
I wanna see frank duke fight mike Tyson dukes showing up will defeat Tyson 😉

Great video- much respect to you Steve! Big fan! but how would one defend a knife thrown at you - thx
I once saw a Bruce Lee technique that seemed to work for that. Involved falling on your back and meeting the thrown knife with the sole of your shoe, deflecting it back into the direction it came from. To be fair, it was a stunt but looked really cool. Bruce pulled it off.
People have no idea what Seagal had to go through to be the only American in Japan learning Aikido and survive to talk about it.
Ty Redd Oh give me a break for fuck sake.
Ty Redd Tenshin Dojo in California is not open anymore.
He also was a sensei in Japan....that is the real amazing thing.

My friend is a 4th dan black belt in Kyokushin karate judo he's been to Japan many a time before for competitions,he told me that if you don't utilise aikido at the right moment it's not going to be any good in a bar brawl etc..
"Thank you Steve Seagull"
@Ace Frehley If you hadn't overreacted like a bitch you would have noticed that he said Seagull not Seagal. He's insulting him.
I know street fighters who would annihilate Sea Biscuit and not get winded.
@@ve2430 maybe, To others who is not focused on the real flow of aikido. Butwhat i can say is aikido saved my life for several times in different locations. All i know is no need to focus on the techniques of aikido when you are in trouble, u can make your own moves to defense your self and attack your opponent using only the basic steps of aikido.. im not saying that aikido is only the best martial arts. All martial arts are good..
Im really not a big Steven Seagal fan but in his best years im not sure you wanna fight him in a bar or in the streets.
Walk into a dive bar and try that. Actually try that anywhere outside a dojo and youll find out people youre fighting against arent doing single pre planned strikes.
Absolutely
Why do so many people hate Steven Seagal?
I think the main reason is because he is a friend of Vladimir Putin and became a citizen of Russia and so American deep state started a hatred campaign against him the last years.
Just a few things for consideration. Dubious claims about his Japanese past, numerous accounts of him harassing and abusing women, and his constant efforts to get more russian guns (and girls) into america, and his request to become a russian citizen as well as an American as well as Serbian.
Christopher Cochran he divorced 3 times

What’s oogey boogey? I lived in japan 2 years never heard it once. Heard it lots here

He's twice as big, if not more, and still that fast and lethal
Now Seagal was a nobody in Hollywood up until '88, so how did Merv get wind of him to have him on the show in '82??
James Colburn whos next to Merv introduced him. James year's of martial arts training even with Bruce Lee.
To see Steven help train Brandon lee and watch their children grow up together is pure magic
that never fucking happened
Brandon Lee wtf? Where you get this information
The only reason people took him serious was cause of his size. If he was 5’6 tryna do this to guys taller than him he would of been a laughing stock.
Those pushes and stuff might be able to work for him just cause he’s huge lol

His Aikido is very very good indeed, Mustard Sensei however !
After watching this I went to a local play ground and tried on some kids , this shit really works especially if you are 3 X their size !!!!
Thx Steven , now I can go look for Ritchie and fuck him up !!!
his skills are very real so unfortunately are the rumours
@Yourname Here Aikido and Bullshido
Size does not matter in Aikido. Skill and dedication matters. Like in any Martial Art. I greatly respect Grand Master Seagal.
Seagal himself said size matters in Aikido. What is it that you respect about him? The way he beat women or the arrogant ego?
That guy taking the falls is out of breath he's got the tough job!!!!!!
Jerry... We're all at the same level.
I gotta say... even if these moves were pre-planned and choreographed, its still takes skill to execute.
It wasn't the time, now is the time!
