The thing about Jax is it’s not just one or two neighborhoods that are bad and crime ridden, it’s little pockets all over the city. You turn down literally one street and it’s somewhat decent. Clean lawn, taken care of house, etc. but you turn the corner and it’s houses falling apart with junk yards and caution tape from last week’s homicide and last month’s armed burglary.

I spent 33 years in Jax (moved away in 2012). Drove in some very sketchy areas many times for work. Even took some jobs in those areas. I never felt anxious or like I was in danger. But I can say that showing respect to others goes a long way. In my whole life, the only time I’ve ever actually been scared was when I was nearly mugged in a subway in NYC, a place I’ve spent very, very little time in. So all in all, I’d say Jax is a pretty quiet place. You almost have to go looking for trouble for it to find you.

it is impossible to generalize whole areas like that as good or bad. Historic Springfield is a hot market with homes selling 400-500K- it is no longer a high crime area though there are still some small areas in transition- same with Panama Park and Arlington. I just sold a beautiful home in Arlington for $340K- it really depends- much of real estate and neighborhoods is hyper local.

I lived in Jacksonville for over twenty years. I worked in some of the roughest areas. I was happy the day I moved out.
Jacksonville’s most difficult issue to overcome is that the city leaders and people do not capitalize on any of its history or merits. It’s very difficult to motivate growth in the city. Even Shad Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, has a hard time trying to invest in the city and encourage growth. The city works against itself. There are some great people there that really try to improve the city, but things just never catch on there. It always feels like everyone there is waiting for the other shoe to drop.
The city is always shifting left to right. So one group will begin a project or work out a deal with a business to move in and then a new administration comes in and changes course completely. There are so many missed opportunities for example Ford once had a plant in the city that produce the Mustang, Lamborghini North American Headquarters were located in Jacksonville for 9 years, MGM Studios began in Jacksonville, Firehouse Subs in Headquarterd in Jacksonville, Burger King Started in Jacksonville on Beach Blvd in the Hogan Spring Glen area. The first feature length movie was produced in Jacksonville. There is a ton of history in that city that is not celebrated or capitalized on.

I feel that most people that live in these areas are good people that are just trying to get by. @@debrathomas7541 Debra you have to understand how cause and effect works. Nobody put you in your neighborhoods, rather your people moved in and everyone else moved out because of the crime. This happens in every city in the country. Before the suburbs existed, people lived in the cities and they used to be nice places. Look at Detroit, Chicago, NY in the 20s they used to be booming and mostly nice places... Slavery didn't exist up north and those cities are just as bad if not worse than Southern cities. If they stop the crime, stop the gang violence and drug use, get the criminals off the street then people won't be afraid of living near your people. But you gotta take responsibility for your own community and that's the problem you guys never do and just blame everyone else and the problem gets worse and worse. Over the last 50 years your communities and culture have decayed and thug culture and single motherhood has skyrocketed. People don't value education they value sports and rappers and gangs.

It’s complicated our “hoods” are still nice looking, beachy and palm trees everywhere but murder rates are the problem. Jax worst areas are east side, north side and northwest. Nick go to some of the apartment complexes Kevin listed, when you talk about dangerous. The neighborhoods in this video consist of people who grew up here, grandparents, aunties and uncles, that's been here for a long time. This area is not the dangerous. In Jax back in the 80s there would be a weed drought around august for a couple months. I knew this big huge black guy who lived with a neighbor lady i knew at my apartments on the southside. He had me drive him over to this neighborhood for 4 dime bags of weed. I sat in the car while he walked somewhere. I was scared shitless. People walking by yellin 5- 0! And people stoppin nearby to buy crack. I waited 30 minutes for him to return. I thought about leaving a few times. He made it back to the car and we headed back to the southside. A few months later he got arrested for selling fake crack. So i didnt see him at the apartments anymore. One day about 2 months later, i was watching tv and his picture popped up on a news story about how he broke down while in jail on the drug charge and confessed to a murder in Alabama 16 years prior. And another guy was in jail for it. And they showed how the other guy got freed and my former neighbor got 30 years. It was a brutal murder of a guy. I thought about how he could have easily killed me on that weed run and dumped me in a ditch in the hood. Whew!

I was born in Jacksonville. Till the age of 13 I didn't really experience a lot of illegal or bad activity. My grandfather once was driving me home from school and before we entered our street we're the house is we seen a man walking past so my grandfather gave him the right of way, but out of no where a cop speed to the man and hits his breaks when he was close enough stepped out the car with his gun yelling at the man. The man dropped instantly I presume he already knew what was coming. A lot of people including some of my own family were victims to addiction/sexual abuse from people they knew or once knew. My grandfather's house was broken into at one point, and 2 boys decided to jump into his truck and start stomping on it claiming "they were chased by a dog" the part where I grew up was a happy medium of bad and good. Sometimes you catch things you could only see to believe or hear it on the news. Currently I live in Tampa and I just recently heard of a triple homicide that had just happened in Jax. I only hope the best for my home town and for it to be better than what media expects it to be.
