Actually in Aude, the département of Carcassonne, we often consider that the town is not very nice besides the citadel. Narbonne is better imo.

Just after I arrived to work in Toulouse aged 19, we went to play rugby in Carcassonne. We got a draw, and the ref gave one of their players a red card, so the crowd went crazy. The ref and us needed a police escort to get out of the stadium. I've been back as a tourist a couple of times in recent years, which was fun too.
