- My recording (hi-8) and experience of the first "Samoan Comedian" in the summer of 1995 at the Polynesian Cultural Center located in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii. For more information on Chief Sielu and his remarkable story, look for him on Wikipedia. I should also add that he starred in a "short" 20 minute movie aptly entitled "Chief" that was shown at the Sundance festival and is now available on a popular streaming service that rhymes with "dime."

I think it would be amazing if the sweet Japanese woman in this video sees this some day! Her interaction with Chief Sielu is, in my opinion, the biggest part of what makes this video a joy to watch (and share) again and again. - Розваги

We found him at Chief’s Luau in Oahu this past Summer. Always wondered what happened to him after he left PCC. He went on and started his own Luau company called Chief’s Luau. He’s still pretty funny as a host. Go check him out when in Oahu.

Thanks so much for the praise! It was really luck that I was there to capture the one show out of thousands that became a classic (endless thanks to the sweet and courageous Japanese lady). I am a retired videographer so I was very conscious of my technique (getting close-ups, etc.) I’m truly grateful that I am able to share this treasure with the world!

Chief is actually a pretty good role model. He's strong, and physically intimidating, but well spoken, worldly and intelligent. Confident, but very friendly. He takes charge of the room, but also not afraid to have fun and look silly himself. He's basically doing a comedy show and teaching people survival skills at the same time, with jokes that are timeless and funny to people from very different cultures like America and Japan. Dude is a real Chad.

Some day, chad and virgin will become cringe and forgotten as the dab, big chungus or Ugandan knuckles, but his man spirit and charm will never die in memory.

I was at the Polynesian cultural center 2 weeks ago. This show has matured a lot since 1995 in a fantastic way. Much more comedic and a lot more fun. As tid bit of info, Kap (the guy you see climbing the tree at the end) is now the new chief and is hilarious. Also an artist and a painter selling his art at the cultural center.

We had the pleasure of seeing him in person in 2003. We couldn't stop laughing them entire time. Better than a Vegas show any day.
This is how you teach people about your culture. He wasnt self-righteous, he didnt demean anyone, people learned something from him and also walked away with a smile on their faces. This is a very awesome guy.
Actually he demean himself. Whites,esp american, think tribal people are stupid and backwards.(or basically other country sucks and they r the best/most advanced) That's why his jokes worked. (Bic,gasoline,pissing on fire etc)
That's why you see trends of ridiculing ignorant americans.
It's reminiscent of a less woke world when people didn't take themselves too seriously. Miss those times.

Saw the show a couple days ago and Chief Kap was the host and comedian. Don't know when Kap started rotating in as host but after 27 yrs, it's interesting to see mostly the same comedy routine with some changes in order.

We just attended a Chief’s Luau last March and watched Chief Sielu Avea. Even at old age, he is still one of the best comedians I have ever watch. We enjoy it so much. Thank you from the Philippines.

I always loved this kind of humor. And the way he shared the culture with them while simultaneously being funnier than most comedians is amazing.
When he said Japanese watch and then "She is coming back" I immediately started sweating laughing. What a brave lady omg

This guy actually spoke fluent Japanese. Even the accent is convincing.

because a large population in the island is Japanese so the language, cultures and heritages also mainstreams. That was why he tends to focus a lot on said audiences.

Wow, Cap was so young. After watching the videos since the 90’s, finally got to see it live in 2019 and meet Chief & his crew at the waterpark, cultural center & turtle bay hotel. Amazing shows.
I think Kap was 27-28 years old in the video. I just found out that Kap also has a twin brother.

@@clarkAHathaway in a comedy drama/show the most important thing is the delivery, even a simple word can be a joke if done by a professional , and this chief is confident, i don't think some other people would be good even if they repeat or play his role.
In our local area we have a comedian who is funny even if he speaks a normal everyday conversation with a bit of a stutter, we called him a born and gifted comedian, his every word was funny, but if his joke was done by others its more like a cringe, that is why the comedian is an important role as their material really sums up their joke and their delivery is on point.

amazing that theyre still doing the same show after nearly 30 years. possibly longer but i dont recall. i live here and we go there every decade or so and this show is one you never ever miss. good times.

He's really really good in his timing as well as his delivery lol he's in this, say, neutral territory, when it comes to humor, where it's generally understandable by anybody from various cultural origins. Plus the voice cracks 😆 it adds to his delivery. Most of all, it's beautiful when people still preserve the traditions of their ancestors despite advancing into modernity in a very fast pace

as a Samoan myself this video makes me very happy, i love the representation through this video. The Pacific Ocean has many islands far apart from each other, yet we are all so connected. It is said that we are not separated by our islands but connected by the sea. Polynesians are the greatest navigators in history, wayfinding through the whole of the pacific ocean (the pacific ocean is larger than the landmass of all the continents combined) with just the wind, sea, and constellations, no compass, no satellite. We are a small, but humble nation, spreading love and culture through our dances, food, people, laughs, traditions. i love my people

I went to Hawaii in 2018 and the Samoan section was the funniest section. And watching this video, not a whole lot changed in the act. Still a joy to watch!
