Actually Joker switched the addresses where Rachel and Harvey were being held. Remember how Joker said he noticed how Batman was desperately trying to protect her earlier? Joker figured killing Rachel was the best way to hurt Batman and destroy Harvey at the same time.

You mistook the Batman saving Harvey over Rachel... The Joker lied and said Rachel was where Harvey was. Batman told Gordon he was going after Rachel. Joker's lie led to Batman saving Dent when he wanted to save Rachel. He didn't choose the city over love. He chose love.
"It's not about money... it's about sending a message." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of David Dastmalchian. What's The Emergency Fact: While filming a chase scene on Lake Street, the Chicago Police Department received several calls from concerned citizens stating that the police were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a dark vehicle of unknown make or model. Epic Cameo Fact: Senator Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont is the older gentleman that confronts The Joker (Heath Ledger) at the party thrown by Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) for Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Senator Leahy is a huge Batman fan and arranged an early showing of the movie for a fundraiser for the children's section of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. He also appeared in Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and as a Batman: The Animated Series (1992) voice. And Scene Fact: Heath Ledger directed both homemade videos that The Joker sends to GCN. The first video involving the fake Batman (Andy Luther) was done under writer, producer, and director Christopher Nolan's supervision. Nolan thought Ledger had done so well with that sequence, he felt there was no need for him to be there when it came time to film the scene where reporter Mike Engel (Michael Anthony Hall) reads The Joker's statement. He put his trust in Ledger and let him do whatever he wanted, ultimately pleased with the result after he'd seen the outcome. Becoming The Joker: In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971). Heath Ledger's sudden death from drug toxicity on January 22, 2008, prompted immediate speculation over this movie's state and Ledger's disposition prior to death. Soon after Ledger's death was announced, Warner Bros. issued a statement that verified that Ledger had finished all of his scenes in principal photography, as well as post-production duties (looping), thus making the Joker his final, completed movie role. Rumors abounded that playing the intense role had taken its toll on Ledger's mental state, causing him to become depressed and take the wrong combination of drugs as a result. However, his family has since put such rumors to rest by stating that far from being depressed, he had a lot of fun playing the role. Ledger did suffer from insomnia throughout his life, and would often take sleeping pills together with other prescription drugs (something his sister had actually warned against the night before his death). Unfortunately, the mix he took that night proved to be a fatal combination.
Part of what makes Joker so interesting is that his origins are completely a mystery. Joker once said in a comic "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
By a long way. I tend to dismiss folks who call it one of the greatest movies of all time and place it on an absurd level (like top 5 of all time). But it is definitely a great action movie (on the level of Aliens) in terms of being the absolute apex of its genre. Sci-Fi/action/horror hybrid for aliens, Superhero/ACtion for Dark Knight. It has a lot of flaws those folks tend to overlook. I appreciate it for what it is, no more, no less, which is exactly what you called it. 👍
Overall comic book hero movie it is the best. I watched "The Dark Knight" 5x in theaters. 😂 It's more of a villain movie though. In the sense that the villains carry the movie. A superhero movie should have the superhero as the star. Good example would be Sam Raimi's Spider-Man, Christopher Reeves' Superman. Personally I think the first Spider-Man is the best for focusing on the hero. I acknowledge all the things this movie stole from The Crow, which imo, made this movie what it was. Without The Crow i don't think this film would exist.
joker's address switcharoo is more cruel and sadistic if you think about it. joker knew rachel was someone so important to batman. he also knew rachel had a relationship with harvey dent. then joker himself or his henchmen told rachel ''we will let your friends(batman, gordon,,) decide who are they gonna save between harvey and rachel. rachel then said that to harvey. batman went to save rachel but instead he found harvey. when harvey was being dragged away from the bomb look at rachel's face. she thought that moment because she picked harvey over bruce/batman as her husband (the letter she gave to alfred explaining she can't be with bruce because batman never gonna quit his life) bruce chose to save harvey. she thought bruce/batman wanted her to die because of her rejection. then harvey went mad because he lost his love thinking it was his friends fault.
The scene with Joker and Rachel was improvised. The actress was actually terrified and that's why she keeps looking towards the director. You guys should react to "Interstellar" which is Nolan's greatest films.
Jack Nicholson will always be my Joker. Because of nostalgia as a kid and taking the character to a darker place for the first time with Tim Burton. But Still being comical. That being said...Heath Ledger took it further. And darker. In different ways. Rest in Peace.

Yeah by far. It raised the bar so high I was disappointed by the next one, looking back dark knight rises was a good movie though.
