I always remembered this film as having been claymated. Apparently it's actually cgi, and it is a bit dated but at least it still looks decent for a 2006 animated film.
Also it's got style. Disney hasn't changed it's CGI style since Tangled in 2010 and it's just extremely stale now (photoreal environment with enlarged, overly-cute characters). I always love when CG animators think outside the box and try to make their movies stop-motion or claymation-like.

Considering 3 sequels and a TV spin-off is what Madagascar got, at that point it probably would’ve overstayed its welcome unless the writers managed to be at the top of their game the entire way through. That being said, a sequel would be nice.

The top of the water has to spread out to engulf your whole body when you belly flop it hurts because the water takes a slower time to cover you, making it more painful, thats why people dive and keep legs straight so the water can accommodate and quickly cover you

They were initially going to do stop-motion, but trying to animate water in stop-motion was impossible so they went with CGI
The main reason why it’s CGI over stop motion clay is cause the studio burned down after starting work on the flim
