I feel neither over- or under-, just whelmed. I liked that they had a lot more running around to different places to talk to different characters, and the lead up to the penultimate instance felt pretty well paced to me. I definitely felt the same way that the tunnel part was confusing and strangely paced. It felt like this short story was meant to give us a lot more on Yao and Chul-Moo, but I honestly just don't find either of them interesting at all so it kind of fell flat for me. All the other characters didn't have any meaningful advancement, it was just a continuation of plot points already set in motion at the end of EoD with the various romances.
One thing I've started to really dislike in the writing-and I feel like this was an issue in EoD, too-is there are far too many times when I feel like I can hear the writer talking to me about what they personally feel, rather than hearing a caste of characters with strong and differing opinions talk about an issue from multiple angles. I think this is the same thing you've been talking about with the 1st world therapy talk.
I was a little dumbfounded at how fast this whole story started and then wrapped up. The demon never even got a name or a personality of any kind, and it just kind of appeared and then got killed right away. Maybe it will lead to something else, which would make me feel better about it, but I really struggle to feel much of anything about this storyline.
It also really makes me sad to think this might be the end of Canthan content. Where was the Raisu Palace stuff? What are Tetra and the purists up to? What's the fallout of the energy crisis? I know that last one was kind of covered in this story, but it seemed like basically nothing happened at all yet. There are so many other things that are much more interesting to me than what they went with on this one and I hope whatever's next is more interesting.

I'm fine the demon didn't have a name or personality, actually.
I'm still mad they made the void talk like a comicbook villain in EoD rather than just being an unsentient force that is uncompatible with life.
Sometimes the villain can just be a nameless beast that's harming you because it's in its nature, no other motivation needed.
I do agree with the rest though.

I may be sounding like a broken record, but I am pretty sure that what we have here are the leftovers of what was going to be the next living season. However, Anet went through the studio/direction change that was explained a few months ago and the project was scrapped as development on the next Expac started. In good faith, they at least decided to finish what they had and staple it on to the end of EoD for free. In their last post, they already said they’re done the first quarter release of the next Expac and are already on the second. With a release date of this Summer, I highly doubt these two patches are anything more than freebies, since that’s what they are. This release doesn’t make sense any other way.

So we need to explore our trauma that generates large sums of emotion to lure the demon. Okay interesting we have been trough a lot. But Cinder is a option!? Cinder, a character that WP, a lore enthusiast, has to wiki!? Not only that, we do this with Chui-Moo!? A character that has no relation with Cinder at all!? This all falls so flat.
I cannot help but feel very dissappointed with how Cantha is handled. We had a succesfull launch of the expansion and then a year of nothing sprinkled with 10 year old LW season 1 content that took all of the winds out of the xpacs sails. Then after such a long time, we get a update for Cantha that in the end feels like very weak filler...

Some of the choices for character deaths to revisit really are quite odd. Cinder? Lol come on. And it could just be me being salty, but the repeated opportunities to makes us feel bad for Trin are a little odd as well lol.
Vlast as a choice was pretty iffy to me as well. As the player, yeah I'm sad we didn't get to spend more time with the character, but for the Commander, they only met Vlast right when he died. As a sacrifice, surely our order mentors would have been 1000x more traumatizing if that's the kind of emotion we were supposed to be drawing out of our characters here.
Unfortunately it kinda seems like Anet didn't want to give us any choices for character deaths pre-PoF, really

This is the first patch in GW2's history that I didn't log in on day 1 (or as close as I could) to play. The last patch was really uninspiring to me, and I just felt like I was playing it due to the sunk cost fallacy. This one I just watched your stream instead, and tbh I've no interest in playing this patch at all. On the plus side, I think the ending wasn't a cliff-hanger for the very reason you said doing smaller xpacs is a good idea: its a fresh start. The next story will be a standalone thing in a new part of the world. The commander is refreshed, the story is refreshed, no lingering plot threads, no annoying ties to past storylines, and hopefully everything will work out in the future. I'll probably check out the summer patch. If its bad, I think my GW2 journey is at an end, lol. I'll probably still watch your vods on the game, though, for as long as they continue.

  • @world.singer

There were isolated moments I enjoyed over both patches. The use of old maps was nice. I enjoy that they are trying harder to show us the friendship between the commander and NPCs, which always felt lacking in the past (even if the attempt is way too heavy handed at times). I liked the levity the red duck tea house instances provided too.
The pacing was all over the place, though. It was especially egregious in the tunnel instance. Absolutely no urgency to something that was clearly meant to be urgent. Characters are calmly chatting and Taimi is flirting with Gorrik lol. The final battle was a joke. I don’t need it to be hard but I was never in any danger of being hit by an attack standing right next to the boss. Might as well have been a cutscene.
I am fairly underwhelmed. I got bored pretty quickly. Plus, I don’t see how these make sense as new chapters being added to EoDs in the story journal as it really has nothing to do with anything set up in the expansion…

30:00 Disagree! I think these logs are way worse than the Bangar conversations. That Bangar dialogue was him reflecting on his actions, challenging the commander, with Jormag using him to win over Aurene (before all the story went to shit in Champions).
The logs try to explain the dangers of the haze, then introduce a possible solution, then end with a solution for the problem! Consider that we had one patch to get to experience the haze, and in between the first and the second patch, the Asura Big Brains have already created a device that'll solve it for us! The only decent thing the logs did was the backstory of Yao and Chul-Moo, even though I disagree with how the characters handle the newly gotten info (i.e. not telling Yao), but at least their motivations for doing so make sense.
40:50 Agree! Very well-written back and forth between commander and Yao. You say that it might just fit with your own feelings on Mai Trin, but I think it's important to acknowledge both sides of her without excusing her actions, which allows for the commander to struggle with Mai without commiting one way or another (that can still be up to the player).
The responses from the characters who are with you seem to be written to reflect themselves as well. Yao talks about Mai trying to be more acceptable to herself instead of 'a bunch of pirates', Chul-Moo about the difficulties of leading a group and people getting hurt as a part of your responsibility.
2:28:00 I also picked Canach for the same reasons and was not disappointed. A very fun instance.
Lastly, you mentioned that you couldn't quite follow the story of Chul-Moo and Yao. You might've missed or forgotten it (and by now you'd probably know but w/e), but it was mentioned in Gorrik's research logs: Chul-Moo's crew went crazy and he accidentally killed someone. Gorrik decides not to tell Yao, so they only find out in the tunnel when you all see the vision of Chul-Moo pushing her off.
Overall the story still suffers from not enought time for anything with too many unresolved shit of which I have no trust they'll pick it back up.

Hah re not recognizing Cinder, not surprised. I remember wishing WP did more coverage of ice brood saga. The thing that stuck out most to me was, as a charr, some members of your warband (and they were different for Ash/Blood/Iron, 2 each I think?) ended up as one of the 12 bosses in that mid south to north transition event sequence. Playing as charr made me feel so shit for leaving my warband. I was hyped for WP to get to them, read their journals, and talk about it, but don't think you ever did WP, maybe just mentioned it in passing.
Also I had a chance to play Icebrood Saga as Iron Legion charr and that was great, because Smodur has unique dialogue for you. He treats you as his subordinate but is very nice to you and talks to you in quite a cool way. Makes the whole thing feel quite deep/conflicting on an emotional level, considering his behaviour overall.
I like Cinder being here, I do remember feeling very bad for her. Ryland seemed to have led his entire warband to death by our hand, him chasing power as Jormag's Lieutenant. Ryland Ryland, shaking my head. Members of that warband were great, feels bad killing them once you chat with them in the steel strike and follow their stories with collections.

    @niclastname Рік тому +2

My possible explanation for why this didn't set up anything coming in the expac would be: EoD was supposed to end the big dragon story, so they want a clean break between that and the next thing. If this does too much setting up of what's to come, then any new people coming into the next story will still have that overhanging "oh well you need to play the previous expansion to get all the context for how this started". It's been a fairly consistent "problem" for most of the game's lifetime. To understand where S4 started you need to play PoF, to understand how PoF started you need to play S3. To understand how S3 started you need to play HoT > S2 > S1. IBS was a kind of clean break, but EoD really relies quite a bit on past events.
It's always going to be a "problem" to some extent though if we're going to have continuity of the game, but I could see why they might try to alleviate it to the extent that they can to transition out of the Elder Dragon story at the moment.

We could've had so more more from them, and interesting lore, but it was just thrown aside so they could quickly wrap up this story and move on.
It felt exhausting to go through this, a therapy patch for the commander. I never felt like this was a real threat for us, and at this point I honestly wish they'd skipped these last two patches and just worked on their next story, but if this was any indication of what's to come, I can't say I'm excited.

The soundtrack is stellar, and contrary to what someone in chat said, the vast majority of it was composed by Geoff Knorr - christopher tin only did the opening theme (which itself was also amazing). What Knorr did was take what was considered the music representative of that civ - all the pieces were traditional (or as close as it could be) pieces from that civ and he made different era versions of it, with more modern instruments as your civ's technology advanced. It was excellent.

I think it's not bad if we have this kind of more personal history from time to time but as if to serve as relief after an epic battle. But that is the problem the epicness. You can see on a old game as LOTRO how they manage epic batlles like the "batlle of pelennor fields" on UA-cam. I feel that at the beginning they tried to achieve this epicness, especially in the "personal story" and perhaps because they did not know how to achieve it, there were errors such as the battle against zhaitan but after this they began with the cast that we already know and there the spectrum was reduced even so, I think the next expansion will be better received and to be honest I don't dislike this story either, but I still believe that a little more of "charr style" would not hurt the game.

    - Yeah the Cantha armor sets aren't that interesting. The warbeast and funeral set are amazing for me. But the Canthan ones? Meh.

When we're escaping the reactor and they throw us into that cut-scene, we are in a see-through glass tube right above the reactor control room where Ankka killed Mai Trin. And when the cut-scene ended, Gorrik remarked on how Ankka killed Mai Trin and vowed to take revenge, which suggested that we did see the scene as the commander through the glass.
    - Wow Lys sounds so vicious there! But I agree with you on that, I don't like the forced moral either.
    - Hmm Cinder is an interesting choice. It's true that you can get more info on Cinder if you did the "following the footsteps" achievements, but so do the other members of the Steel Warband. I wonder why didn't they pick Ryland if they're only going for something Charr related.
    - It's so weird hearing Chul-Moo talking about Smodur and Cinder and Charr stuff.
    - Yeah those are old lines. Blish did say "come back for me" when we were escaping the mist, but as soon as we left his view, he used his communicator and told us that he lied. Basically the tracker he was setting up had lost its power, so Blish had to shut down the functions of his golem body to provide the tracker with infinite power. So I doubt that line was Anet reminding us of anything, but who knows?
    - Now I'm really interested in what the Vlast option will make us do! Because we collected crystals of him in the PoF story, so whatever more we can get really interest me.
    - Wow I actually forget about Aurene dying in S4 too lmao I actually laughed out loud when I saw someone in chat typed "Aurene literally died".
    - I haven't seen that magnifying glass icon above those crates before!
    - Isn't that NPC in Arborstone the same one who we helped collected the Kurzick tapestry, and later found that she is a member of House zu Heltzer?
    - Oh dear who is that shadow? Is it Ignite Mossheart? Is it some speaker member? Wooooooo!
    - Rama's voice acting is really funny lol
    - So Rama's seeing Ministet Li and heard that he was talking ill of Captain Min?
    - I think the women Chul-Moo thought he was talking to was the one he mentioned in Gorrik's record you heard last stream. In one of those records, you hear that Chul-Moo fought a crazed female member of the Jade Brotherhood. They fought to the edge of a digging hole, and the crazed women tried to attack Chul-Moo, but Chul-Moo evaded, and she fell into the hole.
    - Yeah I thought it was weird that it was so quiet when we were in this intense chase and battle sequence, and it turns out that the music was muted lol
    - Well the final boss uses the attack animations of the Echo of Scarlet in the Aetherblade Hideout Strike Mission, so...
    - I guess it's all dead people because those were the ghost that haunt us in the previous patch.
    - lol They used Rama to voice that line in game: "Did we really just use positive memories to defeat the demon?" Good question Rama, good question.
    - Wow hahaha that was funny as all hell lmao the dating thing. Those fan-fiction writers are gonna be crazy over this.
    - Oh so the Empress Inn visiting DR thing is still a thing!
    - This ending is so weird. Like we're in this intense battle with a demon, and four story steps later we're on a date with someone and watching a funny scene. It's either good or meh but ok for the scenes themselves, but connect them together and we get this weird chapter.

I thought it was really brave for the patch to deal with emotions the way it did. It’s something that hasn’t been explored in GW2 and it could be received as retrospective or cringe. (Everyone’s MMV) I’m always glad when the story tries to remind us of the personal stakes and repercussions of our actions.
I forgive the lackluster combat in the instance because I’m having a blast with the new meta and map. Instanced content is a really small percentage of my gameplay with new patches.
I do find it weird that the patch doesn’t seem to connect to the next expansion. I remember the segue to PoE was a random vision in Orr. (“Well, I guess we’re going to Elona, now). But maybe they will tie together somehow. Right now the post-EoD story seems like a televised holiday event between major movie releases in a franchise.
And I thought the date was cute.

14:40 agreed - The GW2 master was a fun series especially the daily griffon race rolls. But i feel when people started donating gemstore things it looked worse than it was. They ignore that youve never asked for stuff over 10 years / stuff went directly to the guild. Your actual solid achievments or grinding for particular items was impressive but this was overshadowed. People forget the offstream stuff funded a lot of this such as your insane amount of PVP matches for gold between streams. IMO the broad strokes of this mini-story feel sort of juvenile since it can pretty much be boiled down to "Commander and company (literally) fight their inner demons and resolve them via the power of friendship, positivity and teamwork". My biggest issue I think is with how the boss demon was handled. The idea of someone basically thinking happy thoughts in a highly stressful situation such as dealing with a big bad demon that is set up to be very fearsome to defeat it sounds a little lame, for lack of a better word. They present something that is on paper an honestly terrifying context and handle it like a kid's show would. They handled this in almost the exact same way as they did way back in the final Mordremoth fight, and my issues from there are thus very similar here. With the tonal maturity that the story has built up over time, something does not click.
Throughout the story the writers have attempted to resolve the issue of the Commander's baggage several times, and none of them felt particularly nuanced or satisfying. The so-called therapeutic dialogue between the Commander and his/her accompanying characters was certainly a mark up from, say, the Shining Blade instance in S3. I will give credit to the writing team for at least addressing it from such an angle. But like many other aspects of the game's story, this problem is a result of a lack of time given for everything to develop. We are getting the summary in-game, even if the summary is about a topic that should be done in an all-or-nothing manner, because anything in between will not be satisfying. For this reason I feel these story beats that pertain to specifically the Commander's character should be dealt with in side stories rather than "personal story" chapters, where the writers can explore it more freely (and the players more interested in the lower-scale storytelling can choose to explore what is functionally a Commander therapy session if they saw fit).
However on the other hand I see the merit in making the decisions they have for these last two patches. Tying up loose ends like the Commander's overall mental state would provide a blank canvas for whatever "the new threat emerging" is to get really dark and gritty if they wanted to go there. If it will be anything like the darkness of the Dragonvoid as a concept, I look forward to what they will explore. I also like that they have taken this time to give depth to characters that were previously somewhat superficial, like Yao and Chul-Moo. Now that they are being given some time to shine, we for a little while get to see characters as actual people rather than what the game initially presented at the launch of EoD, which were ideas of people at best and caricatures at worst. I just wish they did this for people like Minister Li, but alas, no time, gotta keep moving.
Overall idk. There are things to like and things to disagree with. Map looks pretty cool.

No amount of dev time is going to make people care about the commander's PTSD arc if the player can't identify with the character. Everyone's like "omigosh are you ok? can you handle it? we're here for you sweetie" meanwhile I couldn't be less immersed in this artifical struggle snuggle session. Feelings I don't have shouldn't be the main plotpoint. They are trying to cash in on something they didn't earn.

    • @karaba3580
      @karaba3580 Рік тому +1

@@okbuddykormir Yeah I see what you mean. For the longest time we have been taught by the game to view the Commander as a vessel to project a character onto. Now that they're going back on that, it feels jarring, in part due to the linear style of the story the game has taken on. Linear character-based storytelling in an MMORPG -> lack of input -> lack of connection, not only with our character, but NPCs too. What they are trying to present in the recent story works better in a context where our level of character customisation is around GW1 level: one race, one nationality, just pick how they look and what class they'll play. GW2 gives us a LOT more than that from the start, and seeing it have such little effect in the long run character-wise (how they act and react to events) can take you out too. These last two patches just made it shine a lot more. Even if this problem has existed since launch, we did not feel it as much throughout core Tyria because a lot more things were dialogue-tree heavy. I don't know. Maybe we'll get used to it later. But I don't know what it says about the game's ability to immerse when I and others have had to imagine the Commander as a separate entity from the character we're playing with to experience the story.
To be honest, considering this is a filler arc I'm really not surprised that it came out the way that it did. Filler arcs have historically rarely ever been good. If it just wasn't marked as green story in game it may have gone down a lot nicer for a lot of people. Feelings we don't have wouldn't then be integral to developing the main story. Let's hope the next patches are something different.

It won't include the existing Cantha zones or the two patches we just played, so they can't give to much information in these.

What lies within felt underwhelming. The initial setup in the last drop was interesting, demons and some strange void like haze causing nightmares and forcing people to relive their trauma was pretty cool but then it went full Disney with the whole 'positive vibes win the day'. Not to mention it felt like just running errands leading up to one single event and a fight. I first spent 10 minutes listening to Gorrick's research since I hadn't finished the logs, slap a demon once with the tube in scruffy, then get told to go relive some trauma to prepare myself mentally. At first that's not a bad idea, Commander has plenty of trauma in his life. I expected to see Forgal, Eir, Trahearne, Soulkeeper, maybe fight some shade of the innoncents that died in Elona due to Kralk absorbing the god we slew, Soo Won since we couldn't find a way to fix the cycle without killing her, things like that. Blish made sense, I assumed Aurene would be on the list, Vlast was a reach, but who cares about Mai Trin or Cinder? I get it, Mai had her redeeming moment but why would that be something that plagues the Commander who's live through wars with five dragons, an army of charr, a god, and the void of nothingness itself? Cinder especially made no sense. Maybe if my character was a Charr there'd be some sense of 'She symbolized the rift in my people during the civil war' kind of thing but for my human protagonist she's just the number 2 of the Charr rebel leader who Smodurr stupidly took out making the war worse. Feels like the thing was rushed out to me and they had to quickly find a way to resolve the demon situation before dropping it and going to the next project.

Plus, there was still a solid chunk of time between the end of Champions and EOD, whereas with this it seems we'll be getting the next xpac in only a few months. Not sure how One Path Ends felt at the time, but to me Gyala Delves is a better map than Siren's Landing, but both story contents feel like filler (though, One Path Ends has the vision that teases POF).
