How Marvel usually handles a continuity change: Spiderman gets stuck under some rubble and wonders "O man how did I at end up like this?!" Flashesback to a point in the back story that is familiar but slightly tweaked and slowly shows how those tweaks are relevent to the current story. Also everything that has ever happened and will happen has happened within the last 10 years even if it the issues came out 20 years ago. With the exception being if it took place in the 40's or 50's then that happened however long ago that was. How DC handles a continuity change: Burn it down... Burn it all down.
That's Marvel Now right? I thought it was just another softish reboot where the have a bunch of number 1's that need no knowledge of backstory or continuity to get into but they aren't fresh restarts where continuity is washed out wholesale. Some characters were given some changes like Spiderman is more of an adult with a career now and less of a perpetually whiney 20 something and Miles Morales made it into the 616 somehow. It seems like it was a harder reboot than usual, but never as world destroying as a DC Crisis. Its more like "Let's burn some of it down and sprinkle some of this in while we're at it." That was my understanding of it at least. I haven't been keeping up this past year.
It's sort of in between. They did destroy the multiverse and remake it much simpler, with the ultimate universe and main one combined, but most of the characters got to continue on from pretty much where they were rather than reverting to how they were at the beginning of their stories. they also finally retconned the timeline so everything makes sense again- the avengers were founded about 20 years ago, Peter parker became spiderman a few years after that, etc. I think they've done a pretty good job with it.
@@liahansen6896 dc actually ages their characters more and there big events like flashpoint and crisis where the timelines and worlds get destroyed or shifted through cosmic events. While marvel just tweeks memories of old issues and events happen 10 to 15 years within the current time, while they are both crazy. Dc actually makes more sense
after a while you just kinda accept that nothing actually makes sense and that all your favorite characters have died at least once. embrace the chaos.
52 gave me the current Batwoman, New 52 reboot gave me a Batwoman solo run, and now Rebirth has given me Batwoman with a major role in the Batfamily AND another Batwoman solo run, so I'm fine with all of them (they are a lot easier to swallow when you only buy comics for three or four characters, and then those characters end up being kind of niche)
A well-worn lecture cycle that deserves to be redone every few years, to cover the new stuff, and refocus the old stuff based on who's popular at the moment. And this looks like it's going to be a good one, too!
That statuette of the Super Best Friends version of Wonder Girl makes me sad that it never became a full series :(. Looks cool, though! And this is an very concise, effective overview
Love this video. Can't wait for more! As someone who just got into comics in the last few months, it can still be pretty confusing if you don't have the history.
Great video! If I remember the history correctly, before the Jay Garrick/Barry Allen crossover issue, there's an issue of either The Flash or Green Lantern in which one of the characters is reading an old Flash (Jay Garrick) comic. What I understood is that the Garrick/Allen crossover was written to explain how that might happen--like, supposedly, artists on Earth-1 are subliminally inspired by real events on Earth-2. (This is something, though, that I learned from Scott Tipton's Comics 101 like 12 years ago. So I could be misremembering.) ... The DC Multiverse is wonderful.
Great Video, helpe me a lot, I've never been into comics, until about a month ago, i'm a huge Star Wars Fan and what made star wars so special was their Continuity,no reboots! until Disney bought it sigh... i was reading some Star Wars Books and heard Heir to the Empire was also a comic,so i started reading Star Wars Comics and wow are they good, they open up the universe so much! and i think that's why, even though i have tried mightily to read superhero comics(i like a few) but mostly i read Y-The Last Man,The Boys,Transmet,Walking Dead,invincible...Again Great Video and Thank You PS who could keep up with a character in DC? i tried reading all of the Animal Man appearences which are like 500 issues and even that was hard,52 comics, new 52 reboot...I like to reada character that stays somewhat the same,Animal Man went nuts to where i couldn't even pick him out in a Issue unless his name was said.
I admit, I cringed a little when I saw the title, but 110% of my fears were misplaced. I should learn to trust Polygon and their ability to create fucking amazing video content. I DGAF about comics since I was like, 15, but I love watching people talk about things they really enjoy and know well. So let's learn about comics!
This is great! I'm glad to see a host who seems to really know their stuff and not just reading from a script. Keep up the good work!
Exactly. Been collecting comic books for years and I still managed to learn a lot from her.

until last year, when marvel finally said, "fuck it, those guys have the right idea" and let it burn

What about Ambush Bug? What's his story?
Are you still continuing on this series?

I think I'll just go with he's just a bad guy lol I'm not sure I understand all of that yet.
And this is why Marvel is better.
New 52 was really horrible. Thank God for Rebirth!
