i think people were more pissed about alien at that time because if it were to get ranked, it would become the highest star ranked map in the game. then that mazzerin map got ranked, and everyone stopped caring as a whole
Pishi vids are usually an insta-watch for me, but this one was an INTSA-WATCH. All I needed to read was that lowercase "alien", and I knew, I'd click it. In fact, I already clicked it by the time I realized.
Talking about implied slider movement, I think ProfessionalBox's Feelin Sky is waaaaay worse in that matter, those sliders make legit no sense to me compared to ALIEN sliders which somehow play decently. Great video as usual :D
in that case let me state that feelin sky was intentionally made to be that way as "feelin sky" implies being high so the map should only be played while high thats the gimmick thanks
Even while high the sliders don't make sense to me man, you fucked up ! For real though your map is nice, aside of the sliders that are really overdone IMHO...
I love it for showing the craziness of the song in its mapping and the (musically) disorganized or absurdly hard parts with random stuff, it's just like watching a random af thing on the internet, just like the original music video!
I think this map is okay to be ranked. I'd like to compare it to the rise of technical maps: at first when Skystar's (and CLSW's) Dreamless Wanderer maps were ranked, I considered both to be shitmaps (yes I used to actively play CTB). Why? Because I wasn't used to such mapping, I couldn't appreciate it. And that's exactly what happened with Alien - at first people weren't used to it. It was the meme map. After a while it got loved, and soon after it reached ranked. And as you said, nobody really minded if it got ranked - it got through the qualification without problems. Why? People were getting used to Alien, and accepted it for what it is.
Comparing to Goodbye to a World is nil. Even though the concepts of tying specific sound structure to a physical slider shape is present, the basis for the said shapes aren't the same. Robotic sounds convey solid structure and sharp sounds, conveyed in the angular and geometric sliders, while Alien conveys the gritty and more noise like sound associated with the squiggly sliders. Edit: Rest of the video was good analysis. Although comparing to your own mapping past is also strange since each mapper has a 100% unique interpretation of every song they map. While I do agree that there are "norms" like implied slider movement, among other consistencies between what the community calls "good mapping", the whole idea behind mapping is creating something that connects the mapper to the music. Some players will follow and understand, but not all maps are for everyone. i.e. High BPM alternating maps vs. jump oriented maps vs. streaming vs. technical. Although Monstrata's Alien may look "ugly" to some mappers or players, and may be difficult, I still enjoyed playing it and felt the way Monstrata interpreted the song through his mapping. That's all I really want at the end of the day from this game, otherwise every map will be the same core map with some minute differences between them that I can't and won't care for.
it would be perfect for loved if people actutally loved it, but it made some drama (literally talking, besides that yeah it should be in loved section)
0:50 all 3 slider shapes are played in exactly the same, identical way. So they are identical to the players, and I guarantee you, 99.9% of players will never even notice the slight curve, or angle bend, or whatever you're worrying about. If I play that map and you ask me how many slider types there were, we'd all say "just 1 type. they were straight"
Is there a way for you to do a video featuring different mappers styles? or breaking them down and explaining them? or even just core aspects of certain maps? I think that would be a neat one.
a lot of your old maps may be bad compared to what you do now, but a lot of them are still fun to me, although some are just incredibly uncomfortable to play (*cough* injection *cough*) might be just because the rock/metal genre is quite underdeveloped in osu
I think that Alien’s design overall is a fun concept but the main problems it has relate to focusing too much on visuals and not enough on gameplay: I get that certain slider patterns are designed to act like uglier versions of their regular counterparts(even some of the more awkward formations can be found in some great ranked maps) but the problem with Alien is that it doesn’t stick to some key gameplay rules in map design, such as consistency with the use of implied slider movement and general object flow and placement, for the most part: the designs of certain patterns can be used if they’re done well, but that’s the key: they have to make it clear to the player what they’re trying to accomplish based on some ground rules established in earlier sections.
To be honest, after you explanation, I think it deserves to be ranked, cuz if the goal is to express music in osu with circles and sliders, it does exactly that and chaotic part is chaotic, cuz song is chaotic, so it fits perfectly. However as you mentioned with the robotic map example a pattern to shapes could be better idea, but I think it is there, they do seem similar, but could have been more prominent, cuz although chaotic it still had some rhythm going. Also can't really judge cuz can't do 8 star maps :/ But from what I see if osu is supposed to follow music then this map exactly does. Most music's are very well structured so everyone is use to it and once they see khaos they are not use to it and refuse it, because it's different, they expect to play map as others well structured at time where there is not much structure and lot if random shouts n screems are going on.
Well i think Alien was way more rankable back 1 or 2 years ago, then Mazzerins Promethean Kings. (Which got ranked first) But that is maybe only my opinion
Hello, so i recently tried technical mapping with some Lapix songs, they were a lot easier to map after only playing technical maps for a while, but the thing i struggle a lot if making slider art, could you do a video explaining slider shapes and stuff? i would really appreciate it ;)
Honestly, the map should have stayed in loved. The map does have some good points to it, but in my opinion the bad points outweigh the good. Sure, you can argue that this mapping style is "innovative" but I think it's more sloppy than anything. I think he could have made it better by implementing some different things to the first half, but hey. What do I know? I'm just some noob mapper with no ranked maps.
You know, pishi, your opinion on this would have been a lot more credible if you WEREN'T actually someone with a stake in its success (as you timed this, and therefore, would be biased towards defending it).
This singular map killed all my motivations to rank any map. ever. i gave up. it isnt worth it. its dumb when "oh i did it on purpose" is an excuse for bad mapping to make it rankable.
The fact that a BN abusing the 5 mins drain time by inserting 14 seconds of meaningless applause at the very end just to fulfil the approval criteria triggers me the most. Yes, I know artificially lengthening the drain time does not go against the ranking criteria but come on... It is just sheer laziness and disrespect to the mapping community.
Monstrata did what?!?! Oh my god what a blashpemy. I never actually expected someone to do this unspeakable thing. This is a major disrespect to the mapping community. I repeat, extending audio is a major disrespect to the whole. mapping. community.
huh... you say that you are in the middle.. at least you are honest since you were the one to time the whole entire map and not even like the song... woun't not liking a song turn your timing for that song down?
These "concepts" on maps kill me. It's a rhythm game. Literally, NO ONE except mappers CARES! We want a good map to PLAY, not WATCH! That's why I don't like the new era of mapping.
Monstrata: "Yeah...I totally meant that."
what? I know this is a very old comment, but come on...
yes, Monstrata *did* in fact mean all this, very obviously
Monstrata troll map
3:09
You just can't resist can you, Monstrata?
i think people were more pissed about alien at that time because if it were to get ranked, it would become the highest star ranked map in the game. then that mazzerin map got ranked, and everyone stopped caring as a whole
Good point
Honestly what I thought, lol
analyze cookie-butter-choco-cookie please
that song gave me aids
nah fuck that
Yes, around 12 minutes of pishivoice like every sunday
mgmn H E L L O T H E R E

mgmn 🤔
mgmn do you want to map in osu when you hear him?
Pishi vids are usually an insta-watch for me, but this one was an INTSA-WATCH. All I needed to read was that lowercase "alien", and I knew, I'd click it. In fact, I already clicked it by the time I realized.
Same, haven't watched pishi's vids in 3 months
An “INTSA”- WATCH? What’s the difference between an intsa watch and an insta watch
and now the hit sounds are all "tatoe"
That would actually be a perfect world.
Just grab an audio sample of 'TATOE' and replace it as your hitsounds in your skin directory
Talking about implied slider movement, I think ProfessionalBox's Feelin Sky is waaaaay worse in that matter, those sliders make legit no sense to me compared to ALIEN sliders which somehow play decently.

Nihs Nooj I don't think you understand... go pop a joint my nigga
That explains why I love it then
The best thing I know about bad maps is that you dont have to play them. Thats what I thought first, but some maps leave permament scars.
I love it for showing the craziness of the song in its mapping and the (musically) disorganized or absurdly hard parts with random stuff, it's just like watching a random af thing on the internet, just like the original music video!
so one DQ was " were not ready" and the other DQ was " people cant get 98% or better so its unplayable".....top fucking kek. well done BN's
angelsim
Meanwhile, mappers in 2023 ranking 12 star diffs:
I don't know about mapping, but this map is just beautiful, and song too :3
I really enjoy playing alien

this discussion about alien reminds me about hanzers nhato - miss you some years ago.
i feel like alien is the perfect thing for the loved section. not ranked
also cbcc should get unranked and nuked
Lillian yep. Definitely for loved, not ranked
it would be perfect for loved if people actutally loved it, but it made some drama (literally talking, besides that yeah it should be in loved section)
Alien was loved for a while, but monstrata wanted it ranked so
We are talking about cbcc. Aren't we?
I like the mapping style of alien ._.
I expected this video....
Thx mr. Monstrata
plz enjoy map

I just realized from watching this that mapping.... is an art
I want to learn some aspire mapping basics :D
seselis1 basically dont look at the ranking criteria
aspire is way beyond ranking criteria
break the game and know how the .osu file works
yes
*_C r e a t i v i t y_*
2:48 you could say the same thing to CBCC
the sole fact that Monstrata is Monstrata is enough for BNs
one of the few maps id see myself actually play for fun
Id love to see you analyze some of arles (laph) map, since non of his map are ranked, but some of them are played in tournament
Is there a way for you to do a video featuring different mappers styles? or breaking them down and explaining them? or even just core aspects of certain maps? I think that would be a neat one.

might be just because the rock/metal genre is quite underdeveloped in osu
Tatsuo I'm just saying that they're at least entertaining
How much does a feature episode cost? Is that a patreon incentive or do I just insert money on your bank account? Thanks! Kappa
thought you quit :O
you're here forever
It would actually be pretty cool to see an episode on ProBox :]
@@Alex-kl8oi there is one now
@@Ratchet-pl5yo :/

Man, Goodbye To A World is one of my favourite maps of all time, it's so strange to see such a clean organised map compared to Alien.
(it's a triangle)
your voice is nice to hear
idk why
change title to osu!: the method to monstratas mapping.
Epiphany Gaming iirc he already made a video about this one 🤔
PastaCats he already did that video, editor efficiency
The method to Monstrata's madness. FTFY
Actually this isnt monstratamapping, its an exception as pishi said. Normally monstratamapping is different
no this is monstratamapping, because his ideology that he put in his guide is to have a reason as to why everything on a map is placed.
there is something similar between all objects
chaos! chaos!
Every mod: Messy maps can't be ranked, not even while representing music
Monstrata: Hold my beer
Now... what about the hitsounds...
I'd be amazed if the song wasn't chosen by its name.
The map is as is the song, an alien
"... and I'll see you next week."
Video doesn't end with a final single circle when he said week.
Literally unwatchable
To be honest, after you explanation, I think it deserves to be ranked, cuz if the goal is to express music in osu with circles and sliders, it does exactly that and chaotic part is chaotic, cuz song is chaotic, so it fits perfectly.

I honestly love this map and to be honest even the metal parts are fun.
Edit: oh look I said basically the same thing I said a year ago
this is just 2021 mapping at this point... huh
spasibo materi s otsom chto ja rodilsa oserom
its been 5 years and we still dont have an fc on this
when will it end
Well i think Alien was way more rankable back 1 or 2 years ago, then Mazzerins Promethean Kings. (Which got ranked first) But that is maybe only my opinion
Pishi, how about explaining and giving some tips for a good use of sampleset, would be amazing and would help a lot. =D
do you have any plans to like, review a set of maps of the same song in the future? for example reviewing different Tatoe sets / IGNITE sets
could you please next talk about how CCBC got ranked? I mean HOW? please tell me how I can rank my jump train maps to every song i want
Gonna request this map at abyssal's stream >=]
alien is love
The "robotic" sliders still look ugly to me lol
well someone got a 1k combo on dis idk wat u mean :/
i always map in 1/2 is that bad?
note: im a noob and any tips/comments will be very appreciated
osu needs more senya!
CraEZy ask Satellite
yes?
its monstrata anyways, he can ranked any maps he wanted
You really need a banner for your youtube channel
Pishifat pls map A-L-I-E-N
can you make a video on spinners
Do cycle hit next ?
Many players don't like ALIEN because it's a pretty hard map. I think. And unusual.
repetitive random is not random anymore.
I think this map looks chaotic and ugly, but plays really well (at least on halftime).
Hello, so i recently tried technical mapping with some Lapix songs, they were a lot easier to map after only playing technical maps for a while, but the thing i struggle a lot if making slider art, could you do a video explaining slider shapes and stuff? i would really appreciate it ;)
A-L-I-E-N is the reason why now everything can be ranked without so many problems
I need vodka for this
alien belongs to the ranked section, not loved... because its beautiful
Can you do a video about Arles ? Why are they so fun to play ? How are they mapped etcc... ? It would be soooo cool !
Arles mostly followed CRN-style mapping but with a lot more triangles...
pause 6:45 You seem to know alot about sliDers if you know what i mean ..
tl;dw: this map gives him vietnam flashbacks
at the last seconds, you type Rizen but i'm pretty sure that you meant "a q p w"
the concepts were alien
yooo are you the one who voiced the osu tutorial?
Honestly, the map should have stayed in loved. The map does have some good points to it, but in my opinion the bad points outweigh the good. Hello there ^.^
i mean its monstrata, he can get away with having 2 same maps reaching ranked
0:00 what type of cursor is that?
bad.
Skin?
dear pishi, please stop calling everything an ideology
is a troll map.
Skin
You sound like danooct1

This singular map killed all my motivations to rank any map. ever. i gave up. it isnt worth it. its dumb when "oh i did it on purpose" is an excuse for bad mapping to make it rankable.
So in short...
Monstrata is bad mapper
he stops talking about himself at 1:40
Aliens don't exist.
But this map got mapped by one
we need to get rid of monstrata, but how
PapayaLord why?
I enjoy his maps so, no, the pp part is something else
Monstrata is a million times better than what he used to be. Way back in the day when it was the adventures of triangle boi providing the pp rain.
Too fucking true lmao
The fact that a BN abusing the 5 mins drain time by inserting 14 seconds of meaningless applause at the very end just to fulfil the approval criteria triggers me the most. Yes, I know artificially lengthening the drain time does not go against the ranking criteria but come on... It is just sheer laziness and disrespect to the mapping community.
I kinda agree but who would do a full spread with a 8* of a song like this ?
Monstrata did what?!?! Oh my god what a blashpemy. I never actually expected someone to do this unspeakable thing. This is a major disrespect to the mapping community. I repeat, extending audio is a major disrespect to the whole. mapping. community.
Lo Samuel its actually part of the song lol
puu.sh/xxfkE/33f50dd9a1.png uhm but the album says otherwise...
If he didn't we could have a Taiko guest diff, and it probably wouldn't match with the standard's 'craziness'

Random object spam and bad patterns are not a good thing though.
Dude you over think mapping way too much
I do not believe that, maps need logic behind them and not just place objects.
(it's a triangle)
