- 10 year old Bharathanatyam dancer, Shankavi, has been dancing her way through lockdown. In this video, she explains how she's kept herself motivated during quarantine, including exercising as well as coming up with dance routines with her mother. Shankavi is one of my students. I’ve been teaching
her Maths and English and it has been wonderful
getting to know her over the past year. We’ve
really bonded in a special way. I view her as my younger
sister now. She even calls me ‘Anna’ which means older
brother in Tamil.
Filmed whilst socially distancing. A distance of 2m or more was kept at all times.

The essential themes of South Asian cultural life are learned within the bosom of a family and very close-knit community especially in a foreign environment where opportunities to display, grow and keep them alive is a challenge to many modern day parents outside of South Asia. I am super excited and proud of Shankavi for being able to dedicate her time and show us her perseverance in practicing bharathanatyam for 7 amazing years. I certainly hope that she continues to develop her dancing skills and pass on this art to the next generation and also use this to create a more inclusive and diverse society that we will grow into in future. நன்றி Anpu for sharing yet another #LoveYourIdentity video and I was over the moon when the interview was conducted in Tamizh. வாழ்க தமிழ்மொழி யே!
