Del Shannon is a legend. Many great hits.Keep Searching, Little Town Flirt, Hats Off To Larry. This man could sing. I was around back then. That’s the difference between music today and back then. This is almost 60 years and we still listen to it. Like you said Pure Talent.

Yeah it's an easy tell when the singer has no mic, and his guitar isn't plugged into anything, that's it's a set up and not live. But some artists can pull it off live back then. The Righteous Brothers comes to mind as contemporaries. I wonder how willing you're to go back? The 50's? The 40? For there are gems to be found in every decade. Yes, even today.

most songs during the 50s and early 60s were short
Had to fit that oh so narrow window of Radio airplay. While in one way it's detrimental, you can't explore the sound. In another, it makes the artist get to the point. So pros and cons both ways.
This song is from BEFORE my time. (I was born a few years later) I’m very familiar with the song however. In this era, there was Rock and Roll (which this clearly is) and there was Doo Wop, which is a style that employs that type of singing. Great stuff! If you liked the vocals on that one, might I recommend Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons: Sherri or Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You. (BOTH Classics) or Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers: Why Do Fools Fall in Love or Goody Goody. Doo Wop groups relied HEAVILY on incredible vocalists. I think you’d enjoy it.
He had another big hit with 'Hats off to Larry'.

I was 10 when Runaway came out, blew my mind to, continued buying his records long after the hits dried up. His album “ The further adventures of Charles Westover “ is a gem, as is “ Drop down and get me “ and what can I say about “ Rock On “, his best!! Rock on DEL.
Little Town Flirt is another great Del track!
Radio stations at that time wanted two minute long songs, so that's what bands made.
Del was one of the saving graces between the start of rock 'n' roll and The Beatles and The Beach Boys. A superb songwriter with a great voice. One of the few at the time who was writing and singing his own songs. He cut a great album just before he killed himself, produced by the amazing Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra). So sad he didn't hang around longer.

Yeah, you might have never known the pleasure of hearing Karen Carpenter, Led Zeppelin or Stevie Ray Vaughn. It's sad to me that there are so many people that will never know. Another, newer group, that you will kick yourself if you don't react to is 4th Impact. I'm telling you they are beautiful and super talented. check out where it all really started for them, 2015 X-Factor. Their version of "Bang Bang" will blow your mind, plus they give a little background of their group. I loved this kind of song back then. Another one I liked was Teen Angel” They were good and very easy to listen to. I enjoy hearing your reactions insights into them and another thing I think is awesome is that you show respect by hearing the entire song before you give your reaction. Well done!

Great old song from the late 50s or early 60s.
Wow what a tune. One of the truly greats of all time.
The big tragedy of songs from that era was that they were all so short. The first one that comes to my mind is Stay by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs. It's so damn good that I'm always frustrated when it's over cause it ends so quickly.

Most reactors only do songs from the past ten years that lots of reactors have already done. Thanks for being more original.
A lot of these old shows would play the new records and teenagers would dance to them. They might have a band/act come on and lip-sync to the record. American Bandstand, one of the bigger shows of the day, never had anyone play live. Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Milton Berle,... all had live performances. There were no videos made back then. Later, these old performances would sometimes be synced with the recordings to create videos. In Great Britain, it was against the BBC's rules to lip-sync with a recording. However, oddly enough, you were allowed to create a new recording specifically for a show and lip-sync to it.
I’m responding to this reaction quite a while after the post (apprx. 3 years). I did want to let you know in 1986 NBC broadcast a TV show named “Crime Story” (an actually really good TV show). The opening theme was a rerecorded version of the song “Runaway”. I highly recommend that you give this a listen. NBC got Del Shannon to rerecord the song and it sounds much better than the original. Sadly, Del Shannon committed suicide about 3 years after the recording.

Del Shannon 'Runaway' 1961 release. Here reprising it about 1965 on what might be Hallaballo which I watched on Saturday night as a little Southern Cali boy. Loved the Go-Go Dancers LOL!
Remember, you could only put a song on the radio, that was between 2-3 minutes long.
Guy who plays the solo synthesizer actually put the instrument together himself. It was a unique sound at the time.

Falsetto in 1974 Elton John's song Bennie and the Jets channeled the general sound of this 1961 pop classic. Del Shannon's music was a true slice of late 50s pop.

Elvis did this song in his show. Shannon told Bob Costas that Elvis did a good job ... but he thought Bonnie Raitt’s version was better. I thought Elvis’s was damn good.
Was so sad when he died 1990 at age 55 by suicide, gunshot. Another lost talent to music history.
That's probably his best song, but I also recommend "Keep Searchin'" and "Little Town Flirt". Shannon was the first American to record a Lennon-McCartney composition, doing so before the Beatles had a hit in the US.
They sure had fun in '61! The late great Del Shannon. This is my favorite song from the pre-Beatles era of rock and roll.

I had this on a 45 when I was 10.
Shannon didn’t have too many big hits outside this song. Some would consider him a “one hit wonder”. However, I always liked the song “That’s the Way Love Is”. ua-cam.com/video/r9u4SW2IfIw/v-deo.html. He also wrote the famous Peter and Gordon song “I Go to Pieces”.
Del had around 14 hits in the U.K. Rock on DEL.
There is a fantastic scene in the movie “American Graffiti” where they play this song and the scene shows all the cars from the 50’s and 60’s cruising up and down the street at night. I got chills watching it - it was so cool and showed why movies can be so powerful when done right. George Lucas (Star Wars fame) directed it. Genius.

Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'. What a voice, sad what happened to him.
If you ever get the chance check out The Temptations Hey Girl (I Like Your Style). Not one of there most well known but it’s short, sweet, and has some great saxophone. My personal favorite by them. Thank you and keep up the great work.
For radio airplay in the 1960's songs were generally under three minutes long. Artists had to make their songs work in that time frame. That's why you get so many songs with a verse, chorus, eight bar solo or bridge and then another verse and out chorus. Very constraining.
There were short songs back then so they could be played on the radio. if they were too long they missed out of air time. Loved all the go go dancers too. No wonder we were all slim in the 60' and 70's hahaha
The Contours, 'Do You Love Me'. I've loved that song since it was used in an episode of Tiny Toons!
It's a shame that SOOOOO many songs from back in those days up until the 70's and 80's were so short. Radio stations would barely play songs that were 4 minutes.
Have a listen to Bonnie Raitt's version (live 1977) which has a great harmonica riff in it.

Someone else suggested Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons. They started out as a Four Season, but then stuff happened. There is a Broadway Play about the Four Seasons called the Jersey Boys and a movie by the same way. "Sherry" is a good song to hear how high his voice goes.
Del tragically committed suicide I believe in 1991 he had a follow for this song called hats off to Larry and then little town flirt Del Music was always about losing the girl kind of being on the outside he was a great musician great singer songwriter tragically leaving way too soon good reaction and we always say the same thing even growing up then we wish the music was longer but at that time you oly had about 2 min to lay a track down other wise kids would have probley gotten board it was just so different then.Great reaction keep spreading the music to the masses. And Gods favor on you..
