  • Are Gear Indicators Really Helpful? | Motorcycle
Hi, if your motorcycle doesn't have a gear indicator, and you are thinking about buying one, please watch this video. There are PROS and CONS to having a gear indicator, but honestly it's not all it's all cracked up to be.
I have a gear indicator on my current bike, and I rarely if ever look at it. You are better off keeping your eyes on the road

Keep track of what gear you’re in people. There are way too many things to keep track of that we really don’t need anything else. Above all else, ride like you are invisible. Assume no one sees you. Stay safe people.

I like gear indicators because they tell me what gear I'm in.

i thought i needed one on my wr250 but i realized i was using bad form when slowing down and cornering. Instead of using engine braking to assist when slowing or stopping, i was just pulling in the clutch and shifting down all the gears at once, because I was afraid to stall the bike as I came to a stop. I was sometimes loosing count of how many gears I had switched or missed a shift and would let the clutch out to a nasty money shift coming out of a corner, or stalling the engine because the gear was too high. learning to bang through the gears properly, usually only shifting one gear at a time, stopped all the problems I thought a gear indicator would solve.

A gear indicator is not necessary but is useful. While downshifting, I like to know when I hit 2nd so that I can then half shift into natural when coming to a stop at a red light. I'm then looking in my mirror to be sure that I don't get rear-ended until someone stops behind me to protect me. I'm not a fan of sitting at a red light in gear with the clutch in. It doesn't take long to go from netual to first in case of an emergency.

I'm in the uk, practicing on my 125cc. I find it better without it as I can learn what each gear sounds like, and having to look down as you said is dangerous. Also gets you in a good practice for downshifting at traffic lights/junctions.

Not all people are the same. I like having more data on everything including gear indicator. Some bikes don't have even a temp gauge because some engineer with same attitude as you (please do not take it offensive) decided is no longer necessary and said one warning light (when it is too late already) is enough. So I like to have all kind of possible data on display it is a person choice to look at that or not. I have ninja 250R for years and I installed, beside gear indicator, clock, external temperature, tire temperature + pressure monitor, rear camera, USB port, heated grips etc... And if did not have temp gauge I would install even that one. I look this stuff like a condom, better to have it and not use it, than need it and not have it.

Not necessary at all. A convenient crutch, yes. I'm relatively new to riding. May have had a gear indicator in the BRC classes I took, but my first (present) bike doesn't have one. Sure at first you're likely to be a little fuzzy on what gear you're in, particularly when taking turns. But in short order w/ practice you can determine by road speed and downshift feel the gear you're in. Better to keep those eyes up. Ride safe.

Although i understand what you are saying I do disagree with you. I can't imagine riding without a year indicator not because I really need it to know what gear I am in but more as a confirmation of what I believe. Granted I do ride a 1985 Honda which has a nasty tendency that if I downshift too early or unintentionally downshift two gears which I have done it may have too much back pressure of fluid in the shaft drive and lock up the wheel which I have done fortunately never had a crash due to it but it is something I am aware of on my bike and knowing the gear helps alleviate issues just to allow me to quickly confirm. I realize outside of my particular situation it's a non-issue.

The number of the gear you're in isn't as important as whether the engine speed is appropriate and you should be able to tell this by the sound/feel of the bike.
The only time the gear indicator might come in slightly (slightly) useful is when you have close-spaced ratios and you're in a cruising scenario on an open road and not sure if you're in top gear or not. Don't worry about it too much, though, as this is not as critical as people think to fuel economy. If the bike feels okay, it is okay. don't over-think it.

after a "lifetime" of 80s Hondas, i've never found the need for one regardless of if they were 5 or 6 speed boxes. I just counted up or down mentally as i went. If i wasn't sure, a quick lift of my toe would confirm i was in top or not.

I think you need some kind of "clock" interface, whether that be a speedometer or odometer. For example, I can say I would like to go through this turn with the speedo needle pointed at the 9 o'clock position (60 mph) but with the advent of digital speedos I now have to think something like "3rd gear at around 6000 rpm". I think a lot of riders are thinking in terms of 2nd gear, 3rd gear, 4th gear corners, and thus set their speed that way instead of looking at the speedo.

I like a gear indicator on a motorcycle. Especially for new riders. Knowing what gear you are in is important and it takes a lot of years of riding to just be able to instinctively know what gear you are in. Taking a split second to look at your instrument cluster is a normal part of riding. You should never be so close behind someone that you can't take a moment to check your mirrors, and gauges. Plus, trying to find neutral at a stop light, on some bikes is a real bitch sometimes.

    • @Rapscallion2009
      @Rapscallion2009 2 місяці тому

isn't that a good argument for neutral lights?
I've noticed a lot of riders on open roads with their engines "chugging" along and their chains flapping as the bike attempts to maintain 800rpm because they're obsessed with getting it into "top" gear. Then they suddenly need to accelerate and need to change down a gear or two. Labouring the engine is not good for it, and will not give optimal fuel economy.

Having learned to ride on dirt bikes and ATVs, I never found gear indicators useful at all.
