  • Sousa wrote this march in 1889 for a Washington, D.C. Masonic lodge. The occasion was ...; wait for it ... the 24th Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. Really. I couldn't make that up.
    "TYhe Thunderer" was said to be Sousa's wife's favorite march. It's not known who the "thunderer" was. Maybe she thought it was her husband.
    Many thank to the U.S. Marine Corps Band, whose fine Sousa transcriptions make these arrangements a little easier to pull off.
