I was an OG wow player who stopped around the Burning Crusade and revisited it once post Lich King. I was SO surprised they added quest markers and made dungeons easy to teleport to. Some of my favorite moments were begging barons chat to help me find quest targets or sneaking through enemy territory to get to a opposite faction dungeon with some people I met in a hub. The changes arent bad, but those were good times.

What I miss most of all from classic wow was the buffs, you could talk to somoene or trade with them or maybe even group with them. But when you are alone, running down some abandoned forest trail and you see another player you had one goal, buff him, help him. It got the point it reminded me of the Knights of Old raising their visors to salute each other. It was a hello, a salute and your respect for that player all rolled up into 100 mana, and I miss it. :(

"I for one am so relieved not to be the chosen one"
YES, I've been saying this about wow classic for years. It's one of the most immersive worlds I've ever inhabited because it feels so large. A big part of that is how you actually have to travel around it, but I'd argue an even more import part is that narratively the world feels larger than you. When every person walking around the city is a legendary hero of all time it's belittling to the world as a whole.

I've played classic since launch and know most of the stuff already, but still watched your video to the end - very well done!
For new players who want to participate in this beautiful game - it is worth it even if you play an hour a day. Noone forces you to level to the cap. If you run slow you actually get to experience more content than players who rush to the end and get bored.
There is an easy way to get gold while not playing - there are professions with cooldown (2-3-4 days) that bring very valuable items to the market, and you don't need to be high level to do that.
For example, if you invest your money into "Salt shaker" which is made by engineers and level your Leatherworking, you can refine "Deeprock salt" (~5 silver) to "Refined deeprock salt" (~30 gold) by just one click every 3 days. You'll have money for new gear, consumables and mounts which will improve your experience by far

I could really feel the difference in survivability. Some of my gear was even better than the quest rewards. It was satisfying to return to a time when low level crafting was actually worthwhile.

Appart from the sub fee, the only thing keeping me from trying this is the time requirment. When life gets in the way, you can't spend 5-6 hours in a game per day.
And the ones you do, must be balanced between what games you would like to play. I like to play minecraft. I also like TF2. I also also like single player games. When a game is forcefullu time demanding....well....it doesn't actually target gamers in general. It targets gamers who play few or only one game.
And then the sub fee. We have a game that i am not going to be able to play a lot, but to play it i need to give money. That means, the less time you have or the more variant your interests are, the less sence value wise it makes to play the game. And it is a damn shame, because i wanted to try this badly. I just wish they made it more solo friendly without the rest of the bullshit retail has.

5-6 hours a night in classic wow still isn't enough most people played 10-12 hours a day to get raid ready or you have spend months. As soon as TBC launched it died blizz was kinda right people didn't really want classic.

    • @Wyzai
      @Wyzai 2 роки тому

@@malygos9301 no. People wanted classic. They loved it. A portion of the playerbase played it for the nostalgia so they would obviously drop out once they got their fix.
What TBC did is re-introduce microtransactions - the very reason people escaped retail. Those two factors combined is what caused the playerbase to crash.
For raiding you needed around 200 - 300 hours to reach it. You had about a year to do it. It's not unreasonable even if you don't play 6 - 12 hours every day.
Season of Mastery still exists and will presumably exist for a while yet. You have plenty of time to get those 300 hours done. You might be able to do it faster if you have help from other people.

Even though the Classic server was grindy, time-consuming, and confusing at times, there was something satisfying about it all that I don't think I could find in the current WoW servers.
There was a sense of achievement, you felt like you were growing your character one level and talent at a time. The comparatively lack of fast and instant travel meant that you spent more time journeying through the expansive world, you got to see the world more often. There was a sense of scale of just how big the world was and how tiny you were in the grand scheme of things. It felt like a proper MMORPG.
Group content and social interactions actually required social interaction instead of hitting a button to join a queue and then sitting there waiting for your group to land in the group dungeon. There was more unexpected and memorable encounters with other players because everyone was out there in the world more.
If I were to return to World of Warcraft today, it would be the Classic server for me all the way.

It's a selfemployed, selfdirected adventure and for all its inscrutability the game actually was brilliant.

I tried to play during the Launch - after 10+ years of playing retail and 6 months away.
I never could get a character past Level 6. I just got bored. I had gone through Elwynn Forest too many times both pre and post Cata and I just couldn't get excited about doing it again. And none of the other routes even had nostalgia value for me. I gladly let my sub lapse at the end of the month.

To put it in perspective about being slow: as a new player, it will likely take you about 10 game days to reach max level (which is really about half the journey). So literally 240hrs playing the game just to get to the point where you can START raiding and heavily gearing up. If you only get to play 3hrs a day, that's nearly three months of playing to get to max level, and if you are focused and lucky _only_ another three months to get all the best gear for your character.
Comparing to my first run through Dark Souls, where I knew nothing and was completely terrible and didn't know the genre at all... I got my first Gwyn kill within a week. Comparing to modern WoW, in Legion I could have a max lvl 110 character spit out in just about a week and have him geared at a normal raid tier ilvl within another couple of days. 10 days vs six months - that's Classic baby

However, we burn out fast because of the power creep and the lack of feeling like you're actually getting more powerful at the highest levels nowadays. WoW Classic was a lot of fun for us and I think we got up to lvl 30 before realizing we couldn't dedicate a whole lot of time to it being parents and all. We'll get back to it eventually, but I have to say WoW Classic is a lot more rewarding and feels more challenging because your class roles feel more established, and they require you to actually have interesting move rotations.

WoW Classic's ability rotations are not more interesting than modern's rotations...mostly because very few abilities worked off each other in a linear fashion.
You ever look at Classic Mage and think "man, look at that rotation. I could never do that"? Probably not, it literally involves like 3 whole buttons, only one of which is a damaging spell. But now look at, for example, a Retail Fire Mage, and how in-depth their rotations can get, thanks to burst windows, aligning dps cooldowns, execution phases, etc.

A side effect of the slow progression is that you know it will take forever to get to top level so you stop and look around, you get bored of lvling and start doing other things in azeroth. Slow progression results in living inside the world in a different way. If anything I wish they made a wow that was even slower and 30% harder endgame.

@@Assi321 Even so, RS3 is a much MUCH bigger grind than Classic WoW. In no way does it rush you to the end game. Classic wow may be 250 hours to max level and the beginning of raiding, but RuneScape, both Old School and 3, are hundreds of hours to max a single skill. I have over 5,000 hours in RuneScape and have only recently maxed all skills. I started playing WoW classic last year and got to 60 in 2 in game weeks, spread over a few months (with a break in the middle). I maxed all skills, both primary and secondary, and it has all been at a new player's pace, no min maxing, no efficient grinding, just casual playing. WoW has absolutely nothing on Runescape's grind and that mention in the video is the only thing I heavily disagree with.
I also want to clarify, a bigger grind doesn't mean a better game. I just wanted the facts straight here, RuneScape (both versions) has one of the biggest grinds in gaming, as far as I know, and certainly bigger than any version of WoW.

the reason wow 2004 was so successful was because of all the reasons you stated. it was slow and difficult. they only ruined it with feature bloat and over complicated it because of the teenagers these days need to get every thing NOW and are not willing to grind for it like we were when we were teenagers in the early 2000's

Alright I love MMORPG's Rob Stark but there are some things I'd like to point out:
0:21 yes, the game is amazing if you like challenge/reward (not hand-holding/everyone's a winner crap), I have no history of playing anything similar, I went in cold in Jan 2020 and I got hooked forever, it's not nostalgia alone, the game is genius.
0:55 this isn't the Classic/Vanilla map it's the current "retail" version map, the Classic map is only Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms.
1:03 no they don't, Undead are Horde and start in the Eastern Kingdoms (the continent where the other 3 Alliance races start) and Night Elves are Alliance and start in Kalimdor (the continent where the other 3 Horde races start).
2:10 actually the request for Classic servers began as soon as the Burning Crusade launched, it just got very "loud" from Cataclysm onwards, specially in Warlord of Draenor when the famous "you think you do, but you don't" happened in it's announcement.
3:16 Starting area for Gnomes and Dwarves (Alliance) is the same: Coldridge Valley, Dun Morogh. Starting area for Orcs and Trolls (Horde) is the same: Valley of Trials, southern Durotar. So different races share the same starting area, and no, Humans don't start in Goldshire, they start north of Goldshire in a specific area called Northshire.
4:43 simply not true, mages are kings at killing large groups of enemies, there's a whole thing built around that concept called AoE Leveling which was used by, oh I don't know, the World First Level 60 in Classic: JokerdTV? and even in lower levels where mages don't have the AoE abilities, with polymorph and frost nova mages can easily take up to 3 enemies which I seriously doubt any other class sub level 12 can. So WTF Josh?
5:06 Also if you resurrect at the graveyard you'll have resurrection sickness (as shown) which decreases all attributes by 75% and all damage caused by 75%, so you're basically useless for battle, this is more important than some gear durability you can fix by a quick repair.
5:49 This can easily be fixed by downloading an addOn called Questie, I don't see why not mentioning it since there's clearly addOns in the gameplay shown.
    7:00 Fireblast not Fireball
8:02 The teleport (only yourself) reagent is 10s max, that's nothing at level 20.
10:18 Again, mages can solo everything and level fast alone, WF60 JokerdTV, it may take other classes more time but leveling solo is more that doable, some quests here and there might require you to group up quickly with people in the area which is super easy if the area is populated, and dungeons require the holy trinity: 1 tank 1 heal 3 dps, but you can get to 60 without any dungeons at all, just questing alone and/or killing mobs.
13:08 not all quests are eased by grouping, in some cases the quest requires a certain amount of an item, and that item drops once per kill and only for 1 player.
20:33 not really, it starts in the Warcraft RTS games (shown on the left here 21:16 )
Aside from that let me say I have no nostalgia for this game since I never played it originally, I actually never played it at all until January 2020, and I love the graphics I love the music, I love the entire experience, and I'm a guy who can't go back and play GTA san andreas because the game hasn't aged well imo, but WoW Classic is timeless, everything surprised me when I started, the game is truly an unrivaled masterpiece.

One more issue I'd like to add, but isn't completely WoW related, is the mention of RuneScape rushing you to endgame, vs WoW slow grind. This is simply not true, the grind in RuneScape is ten times the grind in WoW. I got my very first character to 60 in a few months with all skills maxed (primary and secondary) with no min maxing, no informed or efficient grinding, just a first time player levelling at a casual pace. Meanwhile, RuneScape is an extremely long grind, for every skill. A single skill in RuneScape can take longer to max than an entire WoW character.

I couldn't get back into WoW Classic. I played from year one, just few months after release and actively played until mid Mists of Pandaria. Cataclysm expansion broke me and I wanted to quit but I soldiered on for the next expansion because of my guild and then I took a long break. Only came back to WoW when new expansion was released to just solo the main quests 'till max level and then just leave 'till next expansion is released.
WoW made me both, love and hate playing with other people. I tried a lot of other mmo's and only found one good enough to stick with (TESO) but overall mmo's made me hate playing with others.
Recent WOW expansion only make me stay away from the game more and more. I think the Dragon expansion will be my last one as I don't believe Bli$$ard will make it a good experience.

The chart at 1:13. You see how beginning of every expansion there is an increase in subscriptions. Except for the transition between WotLK and Cata. That's because towards the end of WotLK there was an update that killed off many veterans. So while some people came back during Cata release. It couldn't surpass the amount of people who were leaving. It no longer felt like the "classic" wow we loved. After that patch Wow never rebounded and this chart really shows that.

WoW was the least grindy or slow MMORPG when it was released, meant to be a 'more fun to play' game in the genre. When they screwed up player housing,.....I was gone. The dumbing down of the talent trees was the first strike. I didn't mind things were somewhat grindy. Compared to a lot of the earlier games that it competed with were 2 or more times as slow. Insta-gratification potatoes are going to feel the pain, which I consider a good thing.

I never got into WoW until I started getting bored of Tera (which is a month or 2 by now). I can definitely see the appeal of this game and the nostalgia and with the upcoming expansion of Shadowlands on retail I'm getting high hopes for the longevity for both retail and Classic. They seem to steer more towards what the player wants again and Classic was purely based on that already. There are so many things wrong with some of the older expansions, I doubt they will make the same mistakes again for Classic, but if they do it cant be as bad as Activision does it on the current CoD series.
