Great video, thank you so much!!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
What a difference that makes just by pinching the edges slightly........such a nice sharp edge now, it’s much nicer than a curvy edge!
Yes! It's a different but effective way to get sharper edges!
I love how you always give us tons of great tips 😍 Thanks and someone said Friends fans? 🙋🙋🙋
What a beautiful job u did thank you luv ❤
You're welcome 😊
I enjoy watching you, because you are real n very informative. THANK YOU
Awww thank you Marge! :)
Hi Karolyn! I've watched so many of your video, but I don't think you've ever said what you do with the extra fondant you cut off. Can you/do you save it to reuse? I'm new to fondant and just did my first small cake with it and I have another bigger one coming up. I had store bought fondant but your marshmallow fondant recipe looks very easy and you're right, it's much less expensive.
Hey Val! I do show it in a few videos, but I can't remember which ones LOL
I keep the extra fondant as long as it's pliable (not super hard when it's cold). I store it in a ziplock bag and then store that bag in an airtight container like a lock and lock. I hope that helps!
Thank you! I assumed you did but wanted to ask anyway. What about if some buttercream got on it? Can you just wipe it off and still save it?
One last question, I know you don’t extra fondant laying around for long, but how long would you say it is good for if you make it ahead of time?
Hey Karolyn quick question cause I noticed you use the buttercream for the outer layers. Do you always do that? Like even if they requested cream cheese frosting or have you covered a cake in fondant that had cream cheese frosting what I’m trying to ask is do you always put buttercream for the outer layers?
I never frost a cake with cream cheese frosting. It's too soft and doesn't hold up as well as the American Buttercream I use. If they want cream cheese icing, I recommend filling the cake with the cream cheese and then frosting the outside with icing that doesn't have cream cheese in it.
@@KarolynsKakes thank you yes I’ve been doing this. I tried using something other than American and it just wasn’t working.
I covered a cake in fondant the next day it bulged, don't know if it was temperature I live in Miami, so frustrating. i had to change the decoration so it wouldn't be seen as much. Why of Why,
Ugh it's the worst! Is it humid there? Sometimes when we cover cakes, we don't get the fondant all against the side and a bubble can form underneath. It has happened to me and I did the same as you, covered it up with decorations!
I really am enjoying watching your videos. You have some great tips and tricks. I do have a question, you talk about poking a hole in the bottom tier but what do you do if it’s inky one tier? I’m sure you don’t want a hole in the middle of the cake... just wondering what you do to get rid of the air for a 1 tier or top tier.
In that case, you can use a small needle like a needle tool or an acupuncture needle. Stick it in on an angle, not straight down, and make a tiny hole. Doing it on an angle makes the hole less noticeable. Then you can take a little shortening and fill the tiny hole with it.
Subscriber...I noticed that you edited the fondant hand smoothing at the end..would have been nice to see the completed process..I struggle with getting the folds smooth.
Thank you Zane! I made this video a little while ago. Since then, I have started to explain in more detail what I am doing. I know how frustrating it is to watch a video and see people skip over something you find important! I know I have more recent videos which include me covering a cake in fondant, I'm just not sure which one!
How much tylose powder would u recommend adding to half pound of fondant please?
I would say about 1 teaspoon. Knead it into the fondant, let it sit for about 20 minutes and it should be easier to work with!
How many layers are your cakes? Thanks for the awesome info.
Hey girl! The one in this video is a 2 layer torted cake.
Here is a video where I explain different options!

You are so good and you make it look easy and doable, but I’ve never covered a cake in fondant. I’ve been asked to do a Mardi Gras cake in a 4 months and I would prefer to do fondant instead of buttercream. I’m going to purchase some styrofoam dummy cakes to practice with. I truly hope it is as easy as it looks. I know practice and more practice will make me become better and more confident. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again for another wonderful tutorial video. BTW, I love your trick and tip on how you get sharp edges. Can you tell me how to get sharp edges with buttercream?
You got this! Here is how I ice cakes!

Doesn’t your fondant get sticky if your cake is fresh out of the fridge? I find I have trouble smoothing the fondant because it starts to get sticky due to the condensation! I’m not working particularly slowly either. It’s so frustrating!
Sometimes if it is really hot and humid and my house isn't cold enough, I may have a little bit of an issue if I don't work fast enough. I am actually posting a video today about working with refrigerated cakes. It is frustrating but there are a few things you can do to help prevent or at least decrease the amount of condensation that forms!
@@KarolynsKakes thanks!!
I always heard putting fondant in the fridge is bad for the cake... does it work for you bc you use cornstarch? I’m curious... lol.
I'm not sure if cornstarch makes a difference. But I am working on making a video on refrigerating cakes. It's all about bringing it to room temperature gradually so it doesn't get condensation forming on it. I've been refrigerating all of my cakes for over 15 years!
Ok, so I know I seen it in one of your videos, but I can't find it. I made the marshmallow fondant from your recipe. I made it yesterday, I covered it in a light coat of Crisco, wrapped in plastic wrap, stored in a Air tight container. I have my Cake filled and crumb coated, fixing to make the Buttercream Frosting to frost it, and then cover in fondant. When you unwrap the fondant, before rolling it out.... My mind is going blank, I know there is something I need to do to it,before rolling it out. But I can not remember or find it in your videos
Anyways, what's the name of the video that you show that. I know it has something to do with the microwave.lol
OMG I'm not sure! Is it this one that talks about getting the fondant to the right consistency?
ua-cam.com/video/EYaNXTDOkj4/v-deo.html
I microwave the fondant to get it pliable. Then I add Tylose to get it to a smooth consistency and let it sit for about 20 min before I cover the cake.
@@KarolynsKakes I microwaved it for like 20 let it cool, and had no problems with it. Thank you
