This goes into some details that help explain the ivory carvings at the terminals of the arms of the Bury St. Edmund's Cross in the Cloisters. Nicely done...
Also the eagle is gabriel, angel is raphael, bull is auriel and the lion is michael. Four kerubic angels. They also coincide with the cardinal directions. Eagle is west, man is east, bull is north, and lion is south.
In the order Matt - Mark - Luke- John, the icons go in descending power: "Angel", Lion, Ox, Eagle. These make the acronym ALOE, because the 4 Gospels were sent to soothe the burn (of hellfire). So I begin with aloe, and end up with the 4 symbols. If you don't like the word Angel, then you can substitute the word Adam, although Matthew's famous long genealogy begins later than that, and Adam is not stronger than the 3 animals, I think. I'd never let a quibble mess up a good memory aid.
Being non-denominational, I miss details like this often and find them intriguing... I'll be looking out for these symbols in upcoming pieces - can't believe I'm already done with this playlist too!
@@mondayschool I do understand symbolism, but astrotheology is not part of the teachings of the Bible. Astronomy is a big part of it, but that's about as far as it goes. The four creatures of Revelation and Daniel are symbolic of Christ's character, and each one symbolizes each of the four gospels, but the four directions and the four seasons, no so much, especially since (I'm not certain of my facts, here) but I think that Israel doesn't have four seasons as we do in North America, so far as I understand, so I find it doubtful that they'd be part of the Bible.

I always thought that there was an astrological dimension to the depictions of the 4 Evangelists. The eagle is an alternative symbol for Scorpio, the lion is Leo, the ox/bull is Taurus, and what looks like an angel is Aquarius, the water-bearer. In addition, these signs relate to the pagan "cross-quarter" days of Candlemas (in Aquarius), May Day (in Taurus), Lammas (in Leo), and All Saint's Day/Samhain (in Scorpio), and might have helped to get pagans to join the Christian world. But of course I'm not a scholar of Christian iconography 🙂

Wonderful - thank you ~
Beautiful
The four creatures (Eagle, Man, Lion and Ox) all make an appearance in the book of Revelation, too.
Always love your videos - so easy to follow but always with so much information! The captions and shaded graphics also really help :)
Great! I always share your videos with my students. You make learning interesting and engaging.
Thank you for the kind words, it's great to hear that our work is shared with your students.
Great video!

Thank you. I always confuse the ox and the lion. :)
Didn't they also reference to the four living creatures of Revelation?
CORRECTION: The four gospels tell us about Christ's "life, miracles, death" AND resurrection. You forgot THE most important part.
I noticed that too! I Corinthians 15:14
But actually, smart history is more sympathetic to faith than most contemporary sources.
@@christianfrommuslim I agree completely. I love SmartHistory.
@@mondayschool I never concern myself with such symbolism. It's not in Scripture, ergo it IS irrelevant, but thank you for your positive comment.
@@ajmittendorf It's not important. Just interesting.

Yes, you are right . It's the cycles of times. The age of Aquarius etc :)
