  • The Oakland Athletics want nearly half a billion dollars to fund their new stadium, but as we peel back the lawyers, the deal is a losing deal for Las Vegas, the people that live here, and the Las Vegas Strip as a whole.

    I’ve been a fan of your channel for a few years now, but an Oakland A’s fan for decades.
    I appreciate your perspective on the ever changing LV landscape. Las Vegas is among my top 3 return destinations and often make two to three visits per year.
    That being said, while I agree with your analysis of the prospective move to LV, I have to take umbrage with the framework that this an “”Oakland A’s” problem - it’s a JOHN FISHER problem. We have had to put up with this POS for too many years. Our greatest hope is that Las Vegas shuns HIM, and he sells the team to Bay Area interests. Las Vegas deserves an expansion team like the successful GK. Oakland deserves a John Fisher-less A’s team! You’d be hard pressed core of a fan base than those that have followed the A’s (I think even Giants fans would agree with that).
    Save your city from the slime bucket that is John Fisher, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that he represents the true Green and Gold.

      Thank you! I couldn't have said that any better myself! Fisher is a money-grubbing sack of garbage, and Vegas deserves much better. They deserve a homegrown expansion team with ownership/management that gives a crap about the community, about baseball, and about putting together a product that Vegas locals can truly be proud of, not the unmitigated disaster that is the Athletics with Fisher as their miserable excuse for an owner.

    Did the Oakland A's benefit the city of Oakland? How could Las Vegas benefit from having the A's there if Oakland didn't? I predict that the deal does not go through. Charlie Finley didn't run the team that way. The Tropicana Hotel/Casino should stay where it is.

    • @antioch1975

      Actually, Finley, in some ways, did run the team the same way by selling off all his good players and trying to sell the team to a buyer who planned to move the team to Denver. Walter Haas has easily been the best owner the A's have had since moving to Oakland.

    Hi, glad to see you back. You make good points and are correct about the money and jobs. It’s not just the A’s that pull this on cities and states when it comes to relocation or a new stadium. I live in Pennsylvania and both our teams in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, football and baseball got new stadiums several years ago and the state, county and cities all put up money to get it done. The only new stadium I have seen being proposed without major money from the government is the Chicago Bears that are planing to move to where the old Arlington Park race track is located. They bought the land themselves and so far have not asked for government money to build the new stadium. Of course it’s still early in the process and I am sure they will get something. But the A’s deal is bad for both Las Vegas and the state of Nevada.
    Very few good paying full time jobs and little chance the bonds will be paid off by the A’s. It would be better for some money to be given to the casino company to make updates to the old Tropicana. More full time jobs and tax revenue from both the hotel and gambling.

      A combined hockey/basketball arena will be occupied 82 days per year. That's 22.5% of the year.

I used to stay there many times in the 70"s and 80"s , but it's never been updated. The A" s stadium is a dump, worst stadium in MLB. So this benifets both parties. The team will be popular in Vegas, with a new hotel / casino on the stadium property, that will be the place to be. There are 81 home games per year, I can't wait to see it. The A"s owners are bad, they will probably make a few years profit in Vegas, then sale the team.

    Great video Steven- Baseball is funded by television first, and yes there is a revenue sharing system. I live 90 miles north of Miami, and the Marlins laid out the blueprint for the A's- get taxpayers to fund a stadium, rake in TV and revenue sharing, send away players when they get expensive, and count all the loot that's left over. Going to a game there is like going to a movie theatre. Interesting to note that the Giants funded their own park, which just happens to be one of the most beautiful in the league. And I'm also not sure how the leagues Anti-Trust exemption factors into the degree of financial transparency that is required. Does Vegas really need the A's? I think not. If the A's want to come to the city, let them figure out how to make it happen and how they pay for it.

    I'd agree Lombardo is definitely trying to establish a legacy with this stadium, but the overall picture in regards to the politicians is contrary to the opinions many of them have raised. Only a few appear to be a slam dunk Yes and it would be a stretch to get passed without the A's making concessions, as the Democrats don't seem to be as on board..
    As I understand it, the memorial day hearing was more of a consequence of the A's presenting the bill 4 hours before the deadline on a 120 day legislative session and I don't think the bill would have even been raised again (so soon at least) if it wasn't for Lombardo forcing a special session.
    It is clear the A's are looking for free money and I don't trust any of their metrics at all. I'd rather see an expansion team come to Vegas, but if the city votes No for the A's, the MLB may hold it against them - not to mention there doesn't even seem to be a large vocal movement for an expansion team locally.

    • @NOTLeavingLV
      @NOTLeavingLV  Рік тому +1

      The deadline for a decision was I believe june 5th, they either did not think it out or felt it so super important to hold a special session or it’s as I suggested, sketchy regardless.

    • @Hrz
      @Hrz Рік тому

      @@NOTLeavingLV Definitely sketchy, as the A's sent it through right before the deadline and I can't imagine that was an accident. They didn't vote on it because of budget disputes that ran until the very last few hours of the session and eventually required a special session of its own to resolve. The A's bill may have died then and there at the end of the regular session if it wasn't for Lombardo calling *another* special session specifically for the ballpark bill.
      As odd as it sounds, the real wild card here in my opinion is the timing of the Golden Knights in the finals - if they pull it off, I imagine watching the city celebrate a championship while you are considering bringing in another team can be... persuasive.

    Most Baseball stadiums are unoccupied 77.8% of the year. Even if a baseball team makes the playoffs & goes to the World Series, the stadium will be onoccupied *over nine months of the year!* Office buildings, stores, and factories are occupied over 200 days per year. Casinos are occupied 365 days per year.

    I live an hour from Oakland. The A’ cannot get anyone to go to there super old never upgraded stadium. They are in last place. Mostly, as you walk to Bart after the game there are gangs hanging out to rob you or knock you out. The politicians remind me of how they use our tax dollars to add another lane to ease congestion. But no, it’s a toll lane and now you have to pay to use it.

    The Tropicana is an aging dump. If anything Bally's should tear it down, build new. Using public money to build a stadium is not a good thing. If you add another half a percent to the resort tax, it would put Las Vegas at 13%, Oakland is 14%. So people might complain, but Las Vegas is still below most competition. Including Oakland whom seems to be so poorly financially managed they cannot keep a professional sports team.

    So I agree with you that this is not a good deal. I would rather have SB 496 bringing in the motion picture studios so that we can grow that into another business here locally by giving tax credits and no real money up front. MLB in Vegas is a good idea however bringing the A’s here is not so great. We should have gotten a new franchise like the Knights did which makes more sense. This A’s deal isn’t really going to benefit us unless you see major stars on this team which will not happen. Also the Tropicana is a crap hole and has been under water for years. Just look at all of the past ownership and transactions in the past few years. No love loss for me on getting rid of this dump of a hotel.

    I’m disappointed that there was no prompt from UA-cam for this video, instead of it just appearing in the algorithm feed. Anyway, I am glad the A’s won’t get a subsidized or free stadium. The idea of playing in their AAA teams stadium will be what happens in the short term I believe. Because now that it’s public, they are coming since they burned their Oakland bridge. It’s crazy to hear that their plan is to tear down the Tropicana for a stadium. I just don’t see that not being a problem and getting roundly criticized by anyone who has lived in the city long enough to call it home. Either they pay for their original spot, or they pay for the heavily rumored spot to replace the concert venue that is marked by tragedy adjacent Mandalay Bay with a stadium that will be in an area of the Strip that has the room to grow and accommodate a stadium of that size without totally screwing up traffic at the south end of the Strip for two years. Just my thoughts. Great video Steven!

      @Not Leaving Las Vegas - a Vegas Video Channel Yeah I just read. I don't see how they think it'll be productive to tear down an established (though older but original) casino and build a baseball stadium that will employ either the same or less amount of people. I also don't see an increase in the value of the property to offset whatever costs are due after $380 million and make it a worthwhile investment. Anyway, I meant the UA-cam notification that occurs when you load a new video for your subscribers. It's always hit and miss if I get them when you initially release them.

    Oh the Yankees were worse when it came time to build their new stadium in the 00s. They, the most valuable sports franchise in the US received $431 million in subsidies. Much of that coming from the impoverished community their stadiums have thrived in for a century. There were benchmarks they promised to the community in exchange for this, to date, they've only followed through on one of those. Sure, they put money into their team, unlike Oakland. But... They are just as shady. Shady with a free pass.
