    I took a Berklee Online course; 'Jazz Improvisation' with Gary Burton via Coursera a couple of years ago. It was such an amazing experience to me. I study modes, circle of fifth, improvisational approach, etc. I passed it and earned the certificate. I was able to pass Gary's course and I considered it as an achievement. The most challenging part was when I played along with his backing track and recorded it spontaneously. I did it for 6 times separately for 6 different topics. I can say it is great and I recommend to any player out there to try it. Nice sharing btw dude. Keep it up!

      Congratulations! I know how much effort you need to invest to get through these courses. I've watched the intro video for that course numerous times and considered taking it myself. Perhaps, now that you speak so highly of it, I'll find time to take it someday. Thanks for your comments.

    I've nearly finished the 12-week Berklee Online Voice Technique 101 course and I have to say how gutted I am that it is nearly over! It's transformed so much more of my life than I could have possibly imagined when I signed up. I now have my eye on one of the piano courses...

      Before I even watch this, I’m just gonna comment, as a person who went through half of my bachelors online with Berklee, it is absolutely not worth it. I found the same information and Rick Beato’s book for $100, and you could find it anywhere else. They do not do a great job teaching you. It’s all a massively, expensive worthless piece of paper.

    I've taken 5 classes over the past 15 years. The instructors have always been good and the platform itself worked well. I learned a lot and had very few complaints. For me, I just picked up specific courses without worrying about a degree or certificate. To that end, i was totally happy. I notice that their online Masters program clocks in around $30K which I would probably never consider since employment in the music industry, at least in my experience, is much more about personal contacts and networks than degrees. That said, there is a Berklee network on its own - you would just have to make sure the 30K is worth it. Obviously, the certificate programs are much less costly though I would be curious to know to what extent students obtained a decent paying good job based on a cert. I was already pretty knowledgeable with things like Pro Tools and mixing before I took the Berklee courses which was good prep since I could immediately apply thing things they were discussing. However, I cannot imagine someone with no production experience being able to get a job based ONLY on an online cert (Berklee or otherwise)

      I think we sometimes forget that the purpose of education and taking a course is to actually learn something valuable. So me too, I took courses because I wanted to understand. It's actually a bit cheaper if you don't receive the credits, but I got them anyway - "just in case."

    Great Info- Most Inspirational! I also am an Old Kodger(LOL), I Also have been a poor student . I am signing up for Ear Training 2 at Berklee in January 2020 to continue to pursue my music college degree . I actually studied for several years at Berklee majoring in composition and arranging in the early 1970's . My experience there was absolutely tremendous - I learned to write and orchestrate for big bands, Jingle writing , and beginning film scoring. Met my wife there ( 47 years of marriage still goin' strong) and eventually had to start a family, bills, rent, Yada, Yada. My major instrument was clarinet and learned so much from my former clarinet instructor- Andre' Lizotte' who was the principal clarinetist for the Boston Pop's Orchestra at that time. My main problem is that although I did great in the courses I really liked , but others I just lost focus and did poorly, like Ear training and just could not get over the threshold to complete my overall studies at Berklee. For the past six years I have been a member of a local town community band playing 2nd chair clarinet and decided to take a very traditional classical Ear Training-1 class at a Community College and struggled to at least get a 'C' final grade, "which is a very major win for me!!" Also This past year I found a great private clarinet instructor to help me more with advanced Jazz Studies/improvisation, etc.. The first lesson was in person and then, due to the Pandemic the music school switched immediately to Zoom On Line Training which has worked out quite well and now can see that On Line studies can work quite well.
    All of the topics you touched on did help with my decision to continue to pursue my education at Berklee On Line which I was some what skeptical about, but based on what you said about spending the $1500.00 to study with Berklee instructors is "in my opinion" "Spot on", for all of the reasons you stated- Quality instructors, Prestige, and focus harder on my studies when paying that kind of money!!. I will also inquire about the scholarships once I get going . I think I will fair better grade wise, and relate better to a more Jazz/Popular music style of Ear Training as opposed to strictly classical methods taught at a more traditional college music course.
    Thanks for your thorough explanations about Berklee On Line!!.

      Thanks Keith for your detailed account. Interesting story. Congrats on your 47 year marriage - awesome! I am a couple of years away from 40 years of marriage. I was thinking this morning after I read your comment, that I had a really good guitar teacher when I was a kid. John Gavall authored over 80 guitar books back in the day. He had such a profound influence in my life at that time I was experiencing the effects of a broken family. Over the last 20 years I have been fortunate to have opportunity to teach many young people and to have an effect on their lives in a small way. Part of the driving force that helped me to struggle through the Berklee courses was the thought of being able to teach better. Whether we are simply an inspiration by what we do, or we actually teach something, our example can have a positive effect on others. I am inspired by you too! Old codgers unite! I hope you have a great experience with the course my friend. Thanks for sharing. John

    I’m thinking of joining one of Berklee’s music courses this summer, but I’m worried it may overlap with another activity I’m doing during weekdays. Their website states that there are online classes to attend. My question is what time during the week (and during the day) do these classes take place? Thank you by the way, this video was very informative!

    • @GuitarBasement

      The good thing about these courses is that you make your own schedule. You just have to plan around your life so that you can keep up with the course schedule. Log in anytime and do the project work whenever you can. In my experience, the instructors have offered their live sessions at different times to accommodate people living in different time zones. Sometimes these are not even necessary if you just work through the material, but you can get extra tips and it's an opportunity to ask questions. You can always re-play the live sessions if you are unable to attend. That's how it was for me and it probably still works like that. Glad you found my video informative. Best of luck with everything.

    • @GuitarBasement
      @GuitarBasement  Рік тому +1

      I haven't taken guitar classes with Berklee, so can't comment on that, but in general all the Berklee courses I took were hard work, but very good. Also I don't know your playing level, but with classical guitar you would possibly learn a lot more than just music reading. Playing classical style gives you finger playing skills to play 2, 3 and 4 notes chord combinations. You use thumb and 3 fingers on different strings. Without those skills you would have a hard time playing written chords. Music reading is also complicated on guitar because you find the same notes in different places on the neck. I have a basic course on single note reading in 1st position if you are interested. It's a lot less money than a Berklee course and may get you started if you don't read music at all. Here's a discount coupon: www.udemy.com/course/read-music-for-guitar-beginners/?couponCode=READ-AND-SUCCEED. You can find the same course on Skillshare www.skillshare.com/en/r/profile/John-Chamley/7561963?gr_tch_ref=on&gr_trp=on. Whatever you decide I wish you luck, but be ready to invest 10 or 12 hours a week for Berkelee. I think that's about the amount of time I had to invest to get through the courses.

    • @GuitarBasement
      @GuitarBasement  3 роки тому +1

      There is a lot of listening and reading to do with this course and you need to apply what you learn by writing exercises. I don't know if the same person is still teaching the course but I found the group lessons to be very informative and they went beyond the scope of the course. You can also ask questions. With any of these courses I believe that you get as much out of them as you can invest time in them. I struggled more with having a lack of foundation of some basic theory concepts, but I persevered with it and got the benefit from it. If you work a regular day job, I would say devote a good portion of the weekend to the course and try to spend a couple of evenings during the week where you can concentrate for a few hours. That's probably what I did. And yes, I enjoyed this course because when you write your examples it's fun to hear what comes out. You also get to hear the examples of your classmates. I hope that helps! John

      My experience is that they reveal content each week that you study. Often there are some listening examples and exercises. The professor will typically setup meetings several times a week at different times of the day. That way you should have at least one opportunity to join an online session with other students. There you can ask questions and watch the responses of the professor. Sometimes you may join a meeting and no one else is there. Most times there are others there. That's my experience.

      Yes, our courses are interactive! Each week, your instructor will post a new lesson. You can log on and work on the material anytime within that week. Typically, students spend approximately 10-12 hours per week to complete the work. More or less time may be required depending on the student’s level of experience. The lessons are media-rich and filled with fun interactive learning activities. Also, the projects and assignments within a course provide practical, real-world experience. Each week, there is a one-hour long class where you can interact with the instructor and your classmates.

    • @GuitarBasement
      @GuitarBasement  11 місяців тому

      Well, I'm not that far behind you and I don't think that age is the issue. I think it depends on what foundation you have in music and whether you feel you can put in the time and effort to keep up with the pace of the course. Let's say you play piano and already have good finger independence. I've taught piano playing students in their 20's - even with music degrees, who struggled with fingering the guitar. You don't want to be struggling with that while the course is going ahead. You may be better off looking for a good local teacher who can guide you in the basics for a year or so.

    • @GuitarBasement
      @GuitarBasement  3 роки тому +2

      Yes you can if that's what you really want. It depends on how much time you are willing to devote to study, and whether your job will allow you enough time to do it. Be aware that you are traveling down a long road, taking perhaps 3 or 6 credits per semester. That's what I did to get my Associates and Bachelors in Engineering while raising a family. But even after you get a music degree, you are not guaranteed to get steady work in music. And assuming you do, there is a chance that you will be making less than in your engineering job. But if that's your passion, I suggest you stay active in music and keep learning as much as you can. If you opt to take Berklee courses, or some other college, it's likely to force you to learn quicker. Incidentally, I had a friend who went touring with a band, then later he ended going back to manufacturing and becoming a QC Manager. Follow your passions, give it everything you've got and don't regret not trying something while you are young. But I do suggest you get really good in mechatronics too, so that you can always return to that. And who knows, perhaps you'll combine both fields! I hope that makes sense. Best of luck to you!

    What’s that thing that does stuff for ten bucks?

      Hi Brye N, I think I was talking about Udemy courses. You'll find some of mine here: www.guitarbasement.com/free-and-discount-guitar-courses. Courses are usually listed a lot more expensive but there are frequent discounts. The lowest you can pay is $10 unless you live in some poorer countries, where they discount more. Do a search for whatever you are looking to study and you can't compare price-wise with college.

Could you pls educate me over this? 2. How many times a week online class is conducted? And how long is each session, hours vise?? 3. I'm planning to apply for piano course, do you have any idea/experience with the piano courses at Berkley? Thanks in advance.

      Hi Nitin, 1. Here in USA colleges and universities have a credit system. For a Bachelor's degree, most schools probably require 120 minimum credits. 2. Courses have an opening date and classes last 12 weeks. When you log in, you will have access to the course material from the curriculum that is revealed for that week. You basically read through, perhaps listen to examples, do exercises and submit assignments. Each professor offers a certain number of hours per week when you can attend classes. They seem to do it at different times of the day to give people the best chance to attend. Classes are mostly for students to ask questions to the professors. Online sessions that I attended were 1hr. 3. I only took theory courses, so I don't know how they conduct the instrument classes. If you contact the college I am sure they will will give you all the details that you need for specific classes. Good luck with everything.

      @@GuitarBasement Couple of questions again.. 1. So is it ONE ON ONE Class? Or Group class? 2. How much value/weight does the Berkley Certificate is adding to you (Career)? 3. You rightly mentioned about Udemy courses (I've done few of them, and it's really worth spending). Do you really think Berkley has something great, unique to offer to their students or it's just the Berkley name that adds weight to your profile/resume?? Wud appreciate your response. Thank you! @GuitarBasement

      @@nitinkate3013 They are not one on one classes. Although I have been one on one with some professors simply because other students didn't join the online sessions. You basically follow a curriculum and study yourself. Unlike a Udemy course, there is a timeline and you don't want to fall behind or you may fail. It forces you to study and if you get stuck you can contact the professor for help. To pass, you must submit assignments and be graded by the professor. With Udemy, there are no deadlines or standards for achievement to pass the course. As far as the Berklee name (Berkley is an entirely different school BTW), they have a good reputation and top notch instructors. I do music because I love it and I took the courses because I wanted to learn. Although if I decide to pursue more education I do have the credits that may be of some value. I hope that helps.

    Are berklee online courses live or pre recorded?

    • @GuitarBasement
      @GuitarBasement  3 роки тому +1

      With the courses I took, each week's lesson was unlocked to give access to text for personal study. That included tracks for listening, notation examples, exercises and assignments with a due date. In addition, each professor would offer a number of times during the week when they would do something like a zoom call where you would typically be looking at the professor's desktop. The sessions may be just to answer questions, or sometimes the professor would elaborate on topics and present some other relevant info during the call. You could also message the professor with questions about assignments too. That's how my classes worked.

      @@GuitarBasement My classes worked the same way for Music Theory 101 and 201. Both instructors changed the times of the Zoom calls around to accommodate different time zones. They posted recordings of every call.

    For one thing... Berklee is not the same as Berkley... You are not paying for the name. When it comes to higher education in electric guitar, your traditional schools may not be the way to go...

      Berklee is still respected as a jazz school and I believe they were early to the game with that, and with online courses. Certainly they are not the only choice and only you can decide which choice is the best fit for you.

    look... it's all horseshit. If your have it, you have it, if you don't you don't. Anything else is a waste of a lot of money. Did EVH go to Berklee or a similar school? Did Steve How or Chris Squire go to a similar school? What about Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, or Toni Iommi? What about Prince? What about Steve Hackett? ..... Look the list is endless. Accept your limitations and move the f* on....

      Those guys had personal drive and a curiosity to learn and experiment. That's important. They also grew up in a particular environment. After I went through a rebellious phase of learning as a kid, I've found that most forms of well-structured education that I sought after were a huge benefit - not just in music. Great teachers + great content can only benefit someone who wants to learn. We should all be learning constantly. It's what we are here for. Whether that's in a school, playing in a band, or on the web. Wherever. In my opinion it's all good.
