I studied music in college, I made it up to junior level college music classes. I changed my major to English, didn't finish the music degree and then made myself a career as a database administrator. I still play music and my son has almost finished his music degree at UNT. Go to college, or don't go. If you're gonna play music, put your heart into it. Regardless of a music degree music requires your heart.

Hey everybody, it's OKAY to go to a music school BESIDES Berklee. Everyone knows Berklee is hyped to the nines and it's a great school, OBVIOUSLY. However, you need to know that there are excellent teachers - just as good as the ones at Berklee - all over the country. Please don't feel discouraged if you go to a music school that is not Berklee. Theory and guitar playing exist outside of Berklee, and there's a chance that many of your favorite musicians didn't go to Berklee either. With that being said, homie is right about music school. You should go.

@@youngvideomaker There are many four-year universities that have schools of music and many of them have excellent major focuses. Many people think those types of music schools are only for band nerds or those that want to perform in an orchestral setting. I can tell you that that is far from the truth. In fact, there's a growing number of universities that are starting sound engineering focused degree plans in their schools of music. Seek out one of your local universities and see what opportunities they have. By the way, these schools are usually less expensive than places like Berklee, and are easier to get financial aid for. It's worth checking out.
I go to a small state college, but my main bass professor went to Berklee so it's nice
The University of Missouri-Kansas City has an excellent music school, as well as several other excellent art programs (theater, dance, etc.)

I was born into a family of very non musicians. I had to teach myself everything about composition and production. I decided a bit late to go into music school, and didn’t think Berklee would be much of an option. Tbh I expected to get in but not accrue enough scholarship, if any for it to be viable. I am at my first semester at Berklee right now because that scholarship turned out to be more than 50k a year. I’m at berklee because I would not meet people, gain experience, and get opportunities in my hometown. I am here because their film scoring program covered every base for me, and before my second semester I’m already a paid session player in their film and video game recording program. “Should I go to music school” isn’t a question a UA-cam video can answer. It’s unique to every person, and it’s your responsibility to talk to people, come to terms with your goals and financial situation, and do the research in order to come to that decision.
I’m also the first in my family to play an instrument. I love playing and love performing with a band but don’t know how to make money off it. I’d want to do music school but it’s just such a commitment for me

My Berklee audition is 25 days away...hoping for the best. I went to traditional college for 3 years before realizing what I really wanted to pursue. Took me long enough to stop being scared and just do it

I wholeheartedly agree with everything said in this video - no doubt every music school will improve a musician. But what really upsets me is that; Berklee for example, would cost $64k including board (but excluding living costs) per annum. Considering employment prospects upon completion wouldn't be as good as other degrees, this makes attending such a school only for the extremely rich and privileged. Totally unattainable for the average person. For non rich people good advice would be to work a McJob and devote every living moment to learning, playing and performing. And try and meet as many people as you can!

You should’ve said, “if you’re parents are paying for it then go to music school. If not. Don’t go.” It’s awesome that your parents paid for it and you’re super lucky but encouraging something you didn’t have to pay for is insane. Especially because it’ll cause someone crippling debt that they might never be able to get out of.

Not worth it unless you want to be a full time musician. For me, going to a tech uni. Get a science degree and getting an office job while doing some side gigs is way more reliable.

I'm in my 5th semester at Berklee, and the truth is the material you get in class is about the same as any of the material you would get at a decent-sized music program elsewhere in the country. What you're paying for, in my opinion, is the quality of the teachers--people who are active in the business, who experience the modern evolution of the industry in real time and know how to convey that experience in the context of the classroom. My conducting teacher is currently the music director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. It's that kind of quality.
I often will message music educators professors on UA-cam, sometimes loaded questions, I do get replies, predominantly on complexed music theory, furthermore it's free !

Berklee is a great school. It's a complete music education. Whatever your primary instrument may be, Berklee teaches you how music works from every angle, and encourages you to be multi-instrumental in ability and in thinking. But as a guitar player, I can tell you Berklee has a world class reputation. I did not attend Berklee but I've known some musicians who have. You don't get in because you can "shred" or play the ivories like a boss. They look for a certain kind of student. It's about the universality of music, and connecting to every genre of music from around the world. The Berklee grads I've known have all been very well rounded, mature, and made a living at music. And the truth is if you want to make a living at music you have to be the best. We live in a competitive world, and the world of music is no different.

I was there in the 70's. It wasn't nearly as expensive as it is today. Enjoyed every moment. Was highly motivated and I've made a living with the guitar for the past 40 years as a teacher and performing. Berklee credentials can open doors if you want to teach and teaching keeps the instrument in your hands. The more you teach, the better you get because you reinforce everything that you learned and you don't pass along bad habits. All my teachers were great. You also have a strong background in theory and can sight read, write and arrange. The object should be to know more than your students, so you can answer their questions and demonstrate what you know. Know everything there is to know about what it is that you do. Even if it's computers. It makes you valuable to an employer or music school. If you can make a living playing an instrument, you'll never have to work a day in your life. You'd play the instrument even if you didn't get paid, so getting paid to teach others how you do what you do, is the payoff. It's very satisfying.
"You also have a strong background in theory and can sight read, write and arrange." This is what I would treasure from a music college. To be a professional musician singer/songwriter it is essential to have these as basic communication skills.

Going to to music school is a great way to go into debt
I went to music school and I regret going. It wasn’t worth it for me at all. Not to say that there were no positives at all, because I did make a lot of friends and it was great to be around a lot of creative people. But a lot of the things that were in my course were either things that I already knew, or things that I could’ve easily learned without paying thousands of pounds for it. I genuinely learned a lot more from my guitar teacher than I did from music school, that includes guitar playing and music theory.
And relating to what Tyler said at the end, there was absolutely NO information in my course about what to do after graduating, nothing on how to network, how to be professional, how to get auditions etc. So after graduating, in a way I was just as lost as I was before starting the course. Now I have a huge debt looming over my head for no good reason. For anyone who goes to music school though, I hope it works out for you, it does for a lot of people.

Went to my local university for a music degree and learned all the same stuff. What college it is doesn’t matter. The cost of your debt as a musician does. My loan payment is only 111 a month. But that’s because I left college with only 13k.
Facts man I'm gonna be done with my recording arts program in a little under a year with only 8k in debt while I have friends looking to have 100k plus once they're done.
@David Wang the work you get should be and more than likely is based upon who you are as a player, while it does help obviously, my playing would get me any damn gig I wanted. Bring it.
Im currently at university for music and I have been really getting bogged down and felt like I have been stuck in a rut. This video came at the right time! Getting my music degree was a great achievement for me. Was an intense 3 year grind but I I loved it. You make some great friends because you all have the same goal and you are all passionate about your instrument and your growth!

Hey there! I too graduated as a guitar performance major at was then Boston Conservatory but is now Boston Conservatory at Berklee. And, like you, I absolutely LOVED my time in Boston. I worked very hard, but enjoyed myself as well. Then, I went on to earn a graduate degree in guitar performance from Florida State University. At the time, I was struggling with deciding which way to take my career. (I didn't see myself working by playing in a restaurant like some much more talented folks than myself!) I came out to Arizona and attended the University of Arizona, where I was fast tracked to become a teacher, which essentially took me two years. I have been a teacher ever since, and have had a great life. Just recently, I began practicing guitar yet again. I never had a single regret that I didn't have a career playing music. Who knows... in a year or two, I would love to give a concert again. Don't close your mind off from any opportunities... music is an impossible business, so if you have the strength and stamina to continue in it, more power to you!
My uncle was the president of juilliard for the last 38 years. I also attended the Berkeley college of Music in Boston as a Tuba player. Going to music school is also an education in world cultures, you meet so many amazing people from around the world. Berkeley is really an international school and the truest sense, they now have a campus in Valencia Spain. Just like juilliard now has a campus being built in China. Music is a universal language that everyone can speak, I highly recommend people spending the time to check out a music school before you make the decision to go there. Spend a few weeks in the city exploring, spend time reaching out to fellow musicians that have gone to the school that you're thinking of going to. there's a lot to gain from the knowledge of others. I went to Music School.
Pros: -You're surrounded by people at your level or are way better than you. This is and should be a wake-up call, and you can either take it as a huge competition, or as a huge collaboration and its a bit of both.
- Private Lessons, Ensembles, Music Technology, and Ear Training are your most important classes and will help you in the long run
- Network. If you're privileged to go to a school that has a great alumni network that will try and get you gigs. USE IT!!!
Cons:
-The Cost. Sorry, Tyler. We all don't have parents who could front the bill, and I know you know that and don't seem to take it for granted. So this is not me criticizing you, but it's just the reality of the situation. Even if you go to a public in-state college with a lesser Music program than Berklee its gonna run you around $40,000 for a 4-year degree without room and board and 0 grant or scholarships. You will not be making that once you get that piece of paper.
-Growing your business. You are your own boss. You must create jobs for yourself. No one in music school taught me this.
-Weeding out. My professors at my Music School made the first semester intentionally difficult to the point of absurdity at times because they didn't want people who were on the fence. I had a class of about 40 that turned into a class of about 6 halfway through the semester. It worked. Those of us who made it all work to some capacity in music, but a lot of us are a lot more cynical as a result of it and it killed my joy for music. It eventually came back because I think that weeding out method does more harm than good, but people need to be aware of this.
-Generals and 0 credit courses. I can't speak for Berklee, but if you do a public school you still have to make time to do generals. You can't do music all the time even though that's what you're going to school for. Also, some schools will require you to do 0 credit courses. These are usually ensembles that require a lot of effort, and you'll do 7 to 8 classes a semester. Where 3 or 4 are literally untransferable.
-Old and outdated info. There's a lot of information in music school that's really no longer relevant to working musicians. This is true for most degree paths, but just letting you know.
All in all I would say my time in music school was a net positive, and if I had to change anything I would say:
1.) Go where its gonna either get you a job or cost the least amount of money.
2.) Take Business, Finance, marketing, and Entrepreneurial classes. These are just as important as private lessons or Ensembles. There are people with not even an ounce of the technical ability as a music school grad and are making a Grand a week in a cover band reading charts from ultimate guitar tab that are a business savvy.
3.) Don't be an elitist. No one cares you went to Music School. Write or play music people will like and be willing to spend money on and don't shame people who write or perform music you don't like. Its hard enough as it is out here.
Yeah I specifically took Economics throughout all of high school because I want a job in the creative field (either fashion or music or both) and business skills are actually vital for most if not all creative jobs.

Berklee allows your elite status to come out of the closet, and to announce to the world: "Hey, look at me, I'm elite." But the great leveler is that music is about the song, not the status of ones parents.
I graduated Berklee in 1986. It was really an incredible experience. I attended a clinic, at Wurlitzer music, and saw Joe Pass. I, also attended clinics at the school, I got to see Jaco Pastorius. After graduating, I was in a band that opened for the Joe Perry project, at a club called the Channel. I saw, Jean-Luc Ponty, at the Orpheum Theater. I saw Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett with a string quartet at Symphony Hall. You get to live in a town, for four years, that is totally immersed in music. I have great memories from going to school there and would not trade them for anything.

I love drawing, animation, anime, and art so I really aspire to draw but since I've picked up guitar I've been excited to learn that as well. Both are expensive though, and even though guitar has taken my attention for now, I think art is still my love

I currently go to Berklee online and it really is a great education. I have been to a local music school before Berklee and the education Berklee gives really is much better than some more traditional music schools, unless you want to be an orchestra player.

I am a guitarist who graduated from Boston Conservatory (B.A. Guitar Performance) many years ago (1981) and can attest that I had the time of my life studying guitar in the fantastic city of Boston. I loved everything about my experience studying guitar while a student. I went on to earn a graduate degree in classical guitar performance at Florida State University and have been teaching for the past 40 years in Southern Arizona. I have recently taken up guitar again, as I would like to get up to performance level when I retire from teaching in the next couple years. I am so happy that I attended Boston Conservatory and if given the chance, wouldn't change a single thing.
My 15 year old girl is taking theory in HS. This is a person who loves Hendrix, Zeppelin, Kravitz, Motown etc. But she hates her theory class. In JR high and College I was totally bored after minutes, and never learned theory. Now like most doodlers I am happy to figure out difficult solos like Kid Chalamayne(thanks UA-cam) but I have very little idea what I’m actually playing theory wise.
And I watch Rick Beato fervently even though over my head.
Only this morning it occurred to me,-no coincidences right?- that maybe teachers should start with the interesting stuff, like Triads, octaves, minke and major scales, the stuff that’s fun to learn and play and Work Backwards from there into cleffs and treble cleffs (so boring to some of us). I personally think a lot more kids would dive in.

I was raised in music all my life, grew up with such passion for music, played live as a child and was around many musicians like my parents watching then perform. In the end I became a producer, music teacher, couch, entrepreneur. Now I run a well respected music school and have full responsibility’s for a top studio. No music degree! Just ear and skill. I find absolutely nothing wrong with a music degree it just wasn’t my happiness or bucket list. Whatever path you choose as long as you’ve accomplished it and are happy!
I graduated from Berklee and would 100% go again. It was my first time being around so many likeminded musicians, music lovers, and just people from different walks of life. I made friends I'll have forever, and friends I get to see when I tour, or when they tour. It was truly awesome. I also had some pretty awesome scholarships that made it a lot more affordable.
That said, it's not a deal breaker. And I don't think any music school is. I have musical colleagues who are incredible musicians, and know little to nothing about music theory, and can play, write, and compose amazing music on a professional level. Some of my favorite players are musicians who just immersed themselves in the scene since they were young.
Additionally, when I'm not touring, I teach at a community college in Austin that has an incredible music program (not an add, I promise). The point being, for young musicians out there, college is not the only option for those of you who want to become musicians, though Berklee, and other colleges are good options.
Just my two cents. I hope it helps someone out there.

My experience with Musicians Institute was pretty much the exact opposite of most reviews from students/alumni. I struggled heavily when it came to my studies, and found that most teachers and students wanted nothing to do with you if you weren't already at a certain level on your instrument. The people there really know how to make someone feel stupid when someone is inexperienced or trying to learn something new. I felt very discouraged being there, and found it to be a very cliquish and cold environment. Impossible to make friends or any type of connections. I'm currently stuck in non-music related day job and have struggled to get gigs due to the lack of help and guidance I needed. It seems like administrators only want to hear positive stories about graduates who succeed after MI, and have no concern with those who are struggling. Forget about any type of career assistance or job placement; anyone who receives assistance is someone who can make the school look good and attract new students.
You've piqued my curiosity, because I've seen this exact comment from you, copy and pasted, on three different videos about or just mentioning Musicians Institute. Clearly you've got an ax to grind but did you ever consider than maybe you just weren't ready for that experience? It sounds like perhaps you were more of a novice, rather than intermediate, in your skills and that likely played more of a role in your experience that you might be willing to admit.

Other's might benefit from learning about your experience. You claim you weren't a novice and wouldn't have been admitted if you were, and that makes sense, but you also mention being inexperienced and not as proficient as others, so I'm trying to understand because those statements seems to be contradictory. How long had you been playing prior to going? Which program did you enroll for (Certificate, AA, BA)? And did you complete it or did the negative experience drive you away prior to completion? I had a couple friends go there and they loved it! It is such an amazing campus and the surrounding area is unreal!
I have hung out with and played pool for hours with George Lynch. Sang to Rob Halford, went to Karaoke with Skid Row, and hung out with KISS. Etc, etc, etc. I think if you and I traded guitar licks on a recording without video, people would not know you from me. "Skill wise".
I play a bit. But you know a ton more chords, theory, etc. My point is, I am thankful you did that! What a great education! And I am thankful I was poor and did what I did, which can't be purchased. I even sang a few notes with the Lynch Mob the very first time they ever played out at the Mason Jar. And I am not a singer.
I think the takeaway should be to just get with other musicians as best you can. A music school is a fantastic way, and just jamming in bands is as fantastic. There is no one set way, and I think you did clarify that. Music IS win, but love is ALL. And when we get out there with other like-minded people, no matter what it is, we find magic. And that is the reason we are all here IMHO.

It would be awesome to go to a music school, but yeah...realistically paying 70k a year for a degree in a low demand field doesn't make a lot of sense financially for most people. Most music majors I know ended up not being able to get a job in music that pays the bills. I think music would be a great co-major or minor though.

I currently go to MI for their guitar craft/luthier program (not exactly music performance, but still) and I've already seen that they offer an unbelievable amount of very cool stuff to the students here. I put off ging to music school (or any college) for 5 years, but man am I glad I'm here.
I think going to music school is great. I have my undergrad in classical guitar performance, and I am working on my masters. I have to say this. The take away is you can totally learn music on your own, and not go to a school for it. However, there are a lot of really great skills you learn and obtain from it. Your knowledge of theory, history, composition. Your playing excels once you attend an institution.
One thing I can also add onto is that the institution allows you to learn at an exponentially grander pace than you would solo

What is the return besides the knowledge though? Different from a regular university, where you can use your degree to get better job opportunities and in turn make money. I don't see the worth for the time and money spent.
Panama I disagree with a music degree you can be in academia and you can teach at a university level as long as you can continue your education so not only am I allowed to teach in an institution but I also obtain skills that I want to have if I didn’t go
@@JustinHatt1 Yeah but that's it. Is the school respected by other industries? Some firms no matter the industry will respect a degree from UPenn or NYU for example. I don't think that holds true for Berklee but I'm not entirely sure. Either way I always thought creativity is what marks a great musician, and most talented artists tend to agree with me.

This is crazy, I had just debated for the first time yesterday going to Berklee. I had always thought I’d at least minor in music or something, but I never thought about just going to a college for music. Maybe this is a sign that I’m supposed to go?

it all depends on what your priorities are. i'm currently a first semester student who used to be completely against music school due to all the skepticism online, but I still put my all into the audition just to have other options. i knew from the start that even if I got in I wouldn't be able to pay for even a quarter of the cost, but I can now say that I am attending berklee on a scholarship due to passion, hard work, and dedication. you don't have to go to college to be a great musician or to have a great career. you go to college because you enjoy the process of learning, you crave it. berklee offers an abundance of resources to help you learn just about anything you're curious about. I'm entering berklee not expecting a career to form just from being here, that's something I'll have to work towards on my own. im entering berklee simply expecting to expand my knowledge and then use it creatively :)

@@saanyaanand9015 lol two year update: i ended up dropping out and it was the best thing i could do haha. my career has advanced a lot since dropping out and i honestly think school is just a crutch. if you’re passionate about being a musician and learning things, school isn’t necessary. everything is on the internet and the best way to really learn is through real life experience. feel free to ask any questions :)

Remember you can always minor in music at a local college! Or go to a different music school.
Berklee is expensive as hell and a lot of people drop out. Not that I'd consider it anyways because I just play for fun (which is ok too!). It's a great school but consider your options if that's your thing!

With the internet and youtube almost all aspects are covered. From music theory to A thru Z on the instrument. College is great but knowledge is at your disposal if you know where to look.
That's a lot of money to spend to enter a career that, on average, pays very very little money. I'm sure the experience is wonderful and the learning is great, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to earn a living wage.
On the contrary, session musicians are in high demand, worship musicians, TV music, Movie music: music is a medium that is in high demand across a variety of media, and in even greater demand for a quick hired gun to do it. It is a lot of money, but to say that music isn't a high paying profession means you aren't marketing yourself as a musician that well
Nathan Weingartner I didn’t say no one can make money on it. I’m sure you can literally name thousands who do. But what percentage of them spent a quarter million on a Berklee degree? Or what percentage of those who did make decent money?
@@GearGasms no, you're subtracting from your position, which was that music doesn't make a living wage. I'll speak on behalf of myself and those I know that a large amount of session musicians and those who are in demand (not just Joe Schmoe performing at bars biweekly) have music-related degrees. I'm not saying that everyone needs to spend a buttload to get by, I'm saying there are valid career options to come from when you said there are not.

@@musicaln8891 according to NY Times, the median salary of someone who attended Berklee at age 34 is 27,400. The median income of 34 year olds in general is over 40k. Not saying you can't make a lot as a musician, but pay 240k to get a degree that would net you less annual income that average isn't a good move for most people.

Omg, you can quite literally watch, 10s of thousands of free video tutorials on UA-cam, all you need is the time, there's music educators with doctorates, professors etc offering a vast array of subjects
I just wanted to say that right now i am figuring my application out for the professional music degree. I never planned on going to art school but now that I've lost my senior year and all the experiences I was expecting with that I see it in a new light. I'm still gonna do online community college tho. Just wanted to say thank you for introducing me to the idea in a legitimate way. ❤️

Totally not worth going if you don’t recieve a scholarship i went for 3 semesters. And most opportunities are given to the popular kids and if you are not apart of that crew opportunities to play are few and far between. I had 3 different private instructors...one Was Jim Perterson, then I had Tomo Fujita and my last was David Tronzo. Although they may be fantastic players none of them helped me unlock the guitar to my needs and I feel like I wasted so much time and effort. The Internet is free and is becoming the best tool to pick up what you want to learn. Save your money fam.
All I'm doing is taking a music theory course at my local community college whilst earning AA as an elective and that's all I need for music . Other than that I'm continuing to go for my mechanical engineering degree.

I went to music school and the only reason I did so is because I had a near full ride. Worth it, if you can afford to study what you love, regardless of how much income it brings you
I believe attending a music school is great, however; it's not for everyone and it is not required to be a great musician. Different minds have different ways of learning. That's something that makes you unique
@David Wang Sure it has tge potential to, doesn't mean that it's the only way to have success. Didn't need music school when I wrote this comment, and still don't need it and have found great success in doing it my way
You should’ve talked more about about Beeklee’s career options and the Beni fits of attending a college because a school like Beeklee costs a ton of money and if you are stuck trying to find a job afterwards to pay of that 100,000 debt, it may not be worth it

I am a music Ed major and I’m only month in. And I’ve already made quite a bit of progress. Being a music major is stressful but I’d still recommend it to anyone wanting to take their playing to the next level
If you are passionate about music then you should go to a good school like Juliard Berklee or the Cleveland Music Institute or whatever school is suitable for you. It's true. Sometimes it's about experience and a stage in your life about living and experiencing college life. It all depends on what u want. Education is just as important as experience. They both go hand in hand. What I know about being a musician is you have to be skillful. That means u have to be able to read and hear music well because musical gigs requires you to know how to play right away. If u are pianists and they need an accompanist for a choir you have to be able to read music and that's a must and if you don't you won't get gigs or won't be able to live off your music. It's a tough reality but we all have to survive and know our skills. Being passionate is also good but also brace yourself for the harsh reality of life. Making a living as a musician is tough. Some teach and have their own studio and some play for gigs such as orchestra or choral. Some even play for the school and also play in the cruise line. Some go to further studies such as musicology or ethnomusicology. It all depends on the individual. As long as there's passion and a will to survive. It can be done. The most important is musical skills and that is being a strong sight reader and a trained ear and a voracious musician who wants to work and be able to support yourself. Music career is limited but if u are in love with it follow your heart and see where it goes.
