Schatten HFN vs. Artec SHP5 + SF602: Premium vs. Budget Pickup Comparison
Can a budget pickup system like the Artec SHP5+SF602 hold its own against the premium Schatten HFN under-bridge pickup with preamp? In this video, I test both on a classical guitar, capturing simultaneous sound samples and analyzing frequency responses of each system. My guitar might look bizarre, but it’s all for science! Tune in to hear how these pickups compare and decide which is worth your investment.

Neutralizing Death Cap on Vintage Tube Amp (Harmony H420) - Going 3-Wire With a Ground
Переглядів 3603 місяці тому
Installing a 3-wire cable with ground wire requires that you eliminate the reverse polarity switching common on vintage amps. You also need to make sure to wire the incoming neutral wire to the side that connects the so-called "death cap" capacitor to the chassis. This is my continuing project to restore and update a Harmony H420 1960's tube amp.

Installing a New Handle on a Vintage Amp - Harmony H420 Restoration Project
Переглядів 2596 місяців тому
Installing a new handle on a vintage amp may be as easy as taking out some screws and screwing on a new one if you find a direct replacement. In my case, I installed a handle with a different number of screws and I had to drill all new holes. Since I already replaced the vinyl covering the old holes were already covered up so this new one looks sharp. Here's my paid Amazon Affiliate link to the...

What pickup system do u used? Tks
Very nice chamber music 🎶🎶 🎶
Thanks. It goes by several names - Spanish Romance, Romanza etc... It's an anonymous piece probably written in late 1800's.
Hmmmm, off topic but can ChordPulse be used without copyright issues?
I am not a lawyer but I would say that if you have a licensed copy of ChordPulse, it's only generating instrument tracks based on the chords that you input. I don't think there is any issue unless you happen to play the melody of a copyrighted song over it.
Thanks a million for sharing this. I often have some great ideas that I want to get notated so I can share the idea with others but I am slow at notating. This may just bridge the gap for taking something I've discovered and getting it into musical notated form instead of only in my head, It also emphasises why notation is important for guitar scores. See how the intended finger positions for playing the piece can easily by misinterpreted. Master players like Al Dimeola for example shun tablature and declare you should just learn music. Well with an instrument like guitar, where you play notes which are the same on different strings, the timbre and colour of the note played is drastically different.(Allan Holdsworth just for one would often shock people by going up a full octave to play a note he could have just used a higher string for example. Why? Because it wouldn't have had the timbre and colour he was after for the piece he created.) It's like playing the same note with a piano and a saxiphone. Just because it plays the note identically in pitch and duration, does not mean it translates exactly into what the composer intended sound wise and there lies the beauty of guitar tablature. Without the tab here, someone(anyone who didn't see you play it) would be playing the correct notes but in the wrong fingering positions. The way you played the 3 A chords for example increases the sparkle if you like moving up the fret board. While staying around the same area will not achieve that sound you wanted as the composer. Essentially the guitar is not a flute where you can only play a single note in different octaves and it always equals that sound. Guitar opens timbral possibilities that other instruments can not achieve. Even the piano when you think of it. Each string on a piano is setup to play only that note, while on the guitar each of the strings allow you to play multiple notes but each string has 25(well for a 24 fret guitar for example) possible notes and these are duplicated on the other strings which are all different colour due to the diameter of the string and windings etc and hence have different sound colour. So you effectively have(on a 24 fret guitar with 6 strings 150 different coloured notes(even more for those who play off the fret board slightly above the nut and below the highest fret and of course add harmonics.) Compare that to a standard grand piano which has just 88 notes and yikes, the guitar certainly adds more complexity in terms of reproducing the exact intent of the guitar composer. In fact this issue is something that seems to lead to the greatest confusion with playing the guitar repetoir full stop. I digress, but thank you ever so much for showing me this awesome software.
Glad it helped!
if u use it in bandlab, can u hear the instrumental or beat while recording? or just the audio of your voice?
If you plug headphones into the mic you'll only hear what the mic picks up. I think you need some kind of DAW audio interface to hear sounds from your iphone/mac etc at the same time.
How do you know you’re getting the accurate measurement ? Do you rest it on the string below or just anywhere between the two strings?
It's measuring the distance between the top of the frets and bottom of the string like it shows right at the end of the short video. You rest it across several frets at the 12th fret, then read the number above closest to where the line disappears behind the string.
This is absolutely amazing. I have been trying to learn how to play this cord melody style for the past almost 15 years and still can’t figure it out. I would more than super appreciate if you can re-record this video with a little bit more close-up and slow it down a little bit. This is truly genius and thank you. I will try to absorb some from this video put another more little detailed one on fingering would be phenomenal
Thanks! Glad you like the video. It would be kind of hard for me to re-record that at the moment since I have a lot of other projects pending. However, have you tried slowing down the video? You click on the gear icon above or below the video, depending on what device you are on. Then select "speed" or "playback speed" where it shows options to speed up or slow down. Hopefully that would make it easier to catch what's going on. If there are particular parts that you just can't quite catch then let me know the exact minute mark and I'll try to help.
Sweet. As a high beginner this looks easy and fun. Thx
It really is fun to play and easy too since there are only two chord shapes. Hope you enjoy it.
What range can it cover? 🙏🏽
I can't really answer that since it's been a while since I used this device and am not sure where it is now. I only used it at my desk so can't give you a good answer. Sorry.
Good work Teacher!
Thank you Denneze!
My teacher introduced me to Segovia scales back in 2008, and in many variations they're still part of my practice routine. I can fly up and down the neck pretty easily thanks to all that practice and my right hand technique is pretty good too (combined w/ regular arpeggio and tremolo practice).
Sounds like you are a dedicated player!
Thanks for the class!
Thanks for watching!
i think this song is approriate frm a foreign overseas worker like me before..who misses my love one at home very much.."like one of the lyric says "How many Tears do i have to fall..I dont know..."
Hope you don't have to be away too long!
Can it also come off in case a strap can change
The strap buttons on the guitar would hold another strap without using the spring loaded snap locks. Or, you could transfer the snaps to another strap to use the locking feature.
@@GuitarBasement so like it can change if you twist it around or turn it
Thank you Sir.
You're welcome!
But putting DURACELL batteries back in is a mistake! IME, they are the worst for corroding.
Right, I've noticed that.
what if it´s the opposite case, and the nut lacks height?
Maybe that's when you need to do the old baking soda and crazy glue trick to build it back up.
Sir, what is the model of the guitar you have in this vedeo, and how do you like it? I am shopping for a cutaway with pickup, and possibly with a crossover nut width 1+7/8.
It's a Yamaha CGX171CCA and it does have a 1 7/8" nut. I like it and think they are a good deal for what you can get them for. I got mine used some years back. It seems they are making them cheaper now. Looks like they have cheaper wood and may not have the dual mic/piezzo pickup system that mine has. But new ones seem to have a built in tuner. If I were buying I would look for a good used one. Very happy with mine.
I wish it had all the lyrics. The Negro National Anthem as mentioned by Maya Angelou in that excellent book ' I know why the caged bird sings'
Holy crap, that’s clever.
I agree.
I had this same issue with some USB rechargeable batteries when I put them in a distortion pedal. No noise gate could even fix it lmao. But other rechargeable didn't do that. So it does depend on the brand and/or type perhaps
Right, my suspicion is that some batteries that allow charging from 5v USB have internal electronics that cause the problem.
Enjoying your tutorials great stuff, Could you advice me please on how to add more than one chord to a BAR with JJazzLab. I can add one chord to the BAR with no problems but I cant work out how to add more.
Hey Paul, since you've asked the question I thought the easiest way would be to make a quick shorts video. Adding chords to a bar is quite easy in JJazzLab ua-cam.com/users/shortsdzBDgqFnNz8
Hi, I’m a Crooner/Vocalist. Restaurants generally want vocalists who sing with instrument and not very interested in singers with iPad. So I’m thinking about using a guitar with backing track accompaniment. I focus on jazz standards. I would like to ask your opinion on software that would allow me to add intros and outros and arrange the track so I do not have a guitar solo as I’m not a “guitarist”. Just take it back to the bridge or sing 2 or 3 choruses. I have iReal Pro but I’m not sure if I can create an intro with it. Would Band in the Box or JJazz lab work for me? Also, with these programs, can I import mp3 backing tracks and have the software transcribe into chords? Sorry for the long question. Just trying to work as a singer using the guitar minimally.
Edited Reply: You set me off doing a little research. Perhaps moises.ai is more like what you are looking for. I saw it suggested on reddit and downloaded the pc version. It's on iPad/iPhone and Android too. They have an end of year sale now, but even if you miss that it's not so much for what looks like a powerful tool, and even the free version seems usable. Original Reply: BIAB is definitely a very powerful program and may be a good investment for you. However, be prepared for the steep learning process involved to make it work for you. Sure, they will say that it's easy, but once you get into the details to make it do what you want, it will take a lot of time. You'll get the most authentic sounds from it though. I don't know if BIAB has any capabilities to analyze tracks in this way, or whether you can take in backing tracks to the mix. It's been a lot of years since I had an old copy of BIAB so I'm out of touch. jjazzlab is also very flexible, yet less complex and you can try it free. If you like it, send them a donation and you won't be bothered by their delayed opening and nag screen. There are lots of those Yamaha files that you can download and try and you can setup your intros and outros etc as you wish. And you'll need to input your own chords and tell it which part of the song they belong to - intro, main, bridge etc. A cool thing about jJazzlab is that when you do a repeat of a section it can play it differently. It's been a while since I used this program too, so I'm just going from memory. Good luck on your quest to find the solution that you are looking for.

a noticeable drop in volume loudness from cable to this JW-06. Have to make amp adjustments in order to hear it better.
That's interesting. I didn't notice that when I was testing it.
I was looking for a decent instrumental version to which I would sing the french lyrics of this song (I could not for the life of me find a karaoke version with all 3 verses). Well, this version in much much better than decent, and exactly what I need. Keep up the smashing work, @GuitarBasement !
Tres Bien! I forgot that I even made this. I'm happy you can use it.
Thank you, for self taught beginners, your reviews are great. Thank you for playing excepts from the books and for your honest thoughts.
Thanks for tuning in. Glad it was useful.
Hey, that’s pretty hip 👍🏽
Yep it is. Opens up a world of possibilities.
Excellent demo on the sound difference the two string types bring. I'm personally way more in the 80/20 camp. The phosphor bronze sounded muddy to me and I would want to change the strings to improve the sound (but another set of new phosphor bronze would still sound that way). I like a bright crisp sound, though, and Dust In the Wind really brought out the difference in a big way. Thanks for a great video!!!
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching.
Bought one based on this video. Returning it today. Horrible finish, edges are sharp, and worst of all, the numbers are off. Therefore the measurements are not accurate. Waste. Of. Money.
Sorry to hear that. Mine seems to be okay.
im doing this for a solo
Hey, that's great to hear. Have a great performance if you are playing it live.
Thanks for the information 👍🏽
You bet!
I was researching active pickups and batteries for a build, you are a life saver
Perhaps that's a slight exaggeration, but I'm glad you found it useful. Actually some rechargeable's may be okay, like the ones that come with a 9v charger. I'm guessing that it's the ones that charge from a 5v USB that have the problem.
@GuitarBasement I was very much considering rechargable 9v batteries because of convenience (obviously) but your advice will come in handy
You can unscrew the screws on the side btw
I've heard of this. I've used the old NIMH type before in pedals and they were fine as it's just "chemicals" like non rechargeable batteries. I'm guessing what it might be is the lithium new fancy ones have to have some modulating circuit to up the voltage to 9V or so that isn't "smoothed" and has a pile of hi frequency crap in it. I'd imagine it's possible for them to have no noise, but more expensive to make. Sticking a bigger capacitor in or something that is activated when it senses a current draw, something like that. Or a capacitor constantly across the outputs that won't leak too much current when unused. Basically you want something to stabilise the voltage more.
I think they save by using 5v USB-C phone charger ports then stepping up the voltage internally. There are some that have a separate charger which I assume is 9v.
Been using Chordplus for a few years now. Pros? Really easy to use. No fuss backing track arrangements. I use it create backing tracks to jam along with on my acoustic electric or electric guitar. I play licks, and guitar solos as I sing along to the backing track. Cons? It's a bit limited. Sometimes I export it to Audacity so I can add a customized bass or guitar arpeggio or riffs track. But for the price and if you don't want to spend hours creating backing tracks or looking at "how to" UA-cam videos I highly recommended it.
Seems you know what you're doing!
I prefer the phosphor bronze
Can you give us the right height?
Printed on the gauges for bass it says E and A strings are .020"(.50mm) and D and G are .018 (.45mm)
Thank you Jesus!!!! I so appreciate you sharing this on UA-cam.
I know I used to look like him but it's been many years since I wore a beard! Thank you. Glad it seemed to help.
Wow! Does Jesus make YT videos?
Thank you sir
Very welcome. Thanks for watching.
Please how did you load your kontakt? I've been trying to add it to my mixcraft 9 but it doesn't show after each trial
The version of Kontakt that I have is the free version. The only reason I use it is to run the Abbey Road drums that I own. It's been ages so I don't remember exactly how I loaded it. Since mine is the free version there is nothing to expire. Because you say "it doesn't show after each trial" it sound like yours just becomes disabled. Am I understanding you correctly?
@@GuitarBasement what i actually mean is this, my mixcraft 10 (cracked) loads my kontakt 7 but it is having exporting issues it can't export. so i went back to mixcraft 9 but then the kontakt 7 doesen't show in the vst category even after scanning the folder from plugin manager. andyes the kontakt is a free version.
This is great! Do you have other guitar practice workouts like this?
Cool, glad you like it. I even forgot that I posted that. Here's a playlist of tutorials on my channel. Perhaps you'll find something else that you like: ua-cam.com/play/PLeIARpXsM7hMqBZ-5zCxNr6KGh_J8jUKG.html. Good luck!
As a student, I would prefer to see the standard notation, and the fretboard in the same page. It would be nice if the standard notation was shown at the top followed by a horizontal fretboard (or fretboards) beneath showing the locations where the scale is played. Then, a set of exercises touching all the notes of the scale in each exercise. Just my two cents in case you decide to do a second edition.
Nice ideas. If I get time to make a revised edition I'll consider your suggestions. Thanks for your feedback.
did you try rechargeable ones without electronic inside?
Not yet. I should. I think the ones that come with a separate charger may work. I have a big pack of regular 9v batteries to get through right now so perhaps when those are done.
I've used the old NiMh style before and they were fine, it's the new lithium ones that do this. (When I say "fine" NiMh is a bit crap as they have battery memory etc).
@@FallNorthni MH dont have memory effect but 3 times lower capacity than regular alkaline
Cool deal thanks
You bet. But it seems like a while ago when I posted that video. I tend to use those self contained mics now just for convenience.
Wow, big difference! Thanks for putting the time into making this. My Taylor guitar came with PB, but I just ordered some 80/20 to try out for fun.
Good idea. The only way to really tell is to try. You're right, there is quite a difference.
please respect yourself and stop making a fool of youself
good advice you should follow bro
Nice looking pad
Yeah man, it's groovie!
what's the song you played?? 6:00
Honestly, I was just noodling around. Playing it back now the chord progression reminds me of "I will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.
The annoying song you played isn't going to make top 40 :-(
Why not? There are a lot more annoying songs that get into the top 40!
