I'm 86 & along with my eldest daughter experienced this flight during September, returned October. Visited my eldest son who resides in Perth & big surprise as he married his Australian lady whilst we were there. What you see is what you get & I highly recommend this Qantas service. Perth ?, lovely atmosphere. My son had a great mixture lined up, included Rottnest Island, where the Quoka's will welcome you, The Pinnacles, & that's something else. Even got to dine at the Opus Stadium & view some of W A v Queensland, one day affair at the WACA. Swan River terrific & if you ever go there, don't miss a visit to Tomato Lake & the Whipper Snapper Distillery. Wish they had a branch in 'Blighty', Wicked stuff, Does you the world of good. A little of what you fancy, mate. Australia ? don't miss it, if the Perth area is an example. You'll regret it the rest of your life. I'd go back like a shot, will I. Well who knows but Mark's old Oz cat, Mickey, he's worth a glimpse. He's a good old boy. Good on yer Qantas. Super experience.
17 hrs in economy. You need a medal. I used to fly regularly, nine hours plus LHR / PHX Arizona, cattle class on BA's old 747's. Scuffed carpets, often at least one toilet US, always a wonky spring or a lump in the seat. The last hour of the flight was purgatory. I occasionally got an upgrade to business, because I was iin the business. To lay down and sleep was sheer luxury.
Thankfully the seats are a lot better than what used to be on offer years ago. It is no walk in the park, but it gets from A to B in the quickest time possible.
We did this flight last year and would do it again happily if the price hadn’t gone up so much in 12 months! We go out to Aus every year to visit my daughter and the “17 hour smash it out in one go flight” means not having to faff about with either a rushed panicking connecting flight in Dubai, Qatar or Doha or a lengthy lay over in Singapore of HK. We fly Jan 9th via Singapore and managed to get that flight £600 per person cheaper than the direct flight. That difference in price is the cost of all out accommodation in Australia and the hire car.
At the end of the day the price has a lot to do with it, but if comparable or close in regards to price of a flight with a stopover, then the time saving really does come into the equation. Enjoy your flight in January... hopefully the heat behaves itself (part of the reason I travel North this time of the year).
Singapore air has flight change overs at Singapore airport as short as 1hr 45min between flights. Direct Qantas to Perth is only worth it if going to Perth.
Did this a couple of months ago. Whilst i can't fault Qantas' service, the flight was just too long for me. Your probably up 3 hours before the flight, have to be at the airport a minimum 2 hours before it departs, 17 hours in an aircraft and there's 22 hours right there. So if you have issues sleeping on an aircraft, your not going to feel the best reaching destination.
I had a 3hr flight from Helsinki prior to this, so factoring in the 2.5hr layover, and even staying at an airport hotel in Helsinki, still up 2.5hrs before the first flight there is another 8 hours... and it gets worse, after arriving in Perth, a 3hr layover before a 4hr flight to Sydney. Lets just say even though I did get some sleep on the 2nd and 3rd flights, it took several days to shake off the effects.
@@ausflyer I agree. Easier and less painful to stop via Singapore etc. I missed my onward flight and had to wait half the day thanks to immigration and customs.
It is more an experience, not a review. A lot of people have never done a flight like this so showing some of the terminal I have found helps. The seat is like pretty much every economy seat in all airlines... it isn't a lie flat bed, but it is also up to 10 times cheaper.
To be honest ,I was not impressed by the service for such a long flight ,also the economy seats very cramped you where lucky or not ,you had an empty seat and also just 2 seats can you imagine you sit in the middle with 2 big person next to you and you need frequently toilets not great at all .I would never fly to Australia nonstop with stopover no problem maybe like in the old days via Karachi and Bangkok .look at SIA they use on there Ultra long haul a specially designed plane with less seats Qantas is just like most western airlines just expensive and not great
I am 6ft 1in (185cm) and have curves in all the right (wrong) places and am fine flying economy. Obviously if it is a full flight, then things can get a little uncomfortable, however I would rather do a dozen long haul trips down the back over 1-2 up the front for the same cost. Once Qantas launch the ultra long flights with the A35X-ULR it will have a much lower density of passengers due to the proposed 20hr+ flights.
took this flight myself in September 2022. Thought it was perfectly fine and got to PER feeling good, worst part was having to get domestic flight to LHR at 6am. So made for a very long travel day
I like to keep my flights under 14hrs, and used to make an exception from Dallas to Sydney (16hrs) but after doing the Singapore stopover so many times I wanted to fly this route for a 2nd time, and I highly rate it... even better if Perth is your final destination.
Thank you for watching, and never rule things out, maybe not a flight like London to Perth, but there are other flights which may get you up in the air.
I've made the return flight between Sydney (or Brisbane) and London seven times along with one single trip. I think any more, particularly if they have a non-stop from the Eastern side of Australia, I'd have to go business class. Like the self-serve snacks. Thanks for sharing.
The direct flights from SYD & then MEL start in 2026 to LHR... Business Class would definitely be the best way to do it (or First which they will also offer).
@ausflyer I noticed you got the two seat configuration at the back of the aircraft. My selection when I flew on the 747's. I found it had a pleasant 'swaying' motion that assisted with sleep.
Good morning friend. Just spotted the new offering. Yes it is a long haul trip but if it is planned properly the savings flying economy make it worth while. Unfortunately we haven’t flown this route from London. Last trip London-Dubai-Perth-Melbourne. All in economy. The leg from Perth-Melbourne with Qantas was very comfortable down the back row of two seats. Plenty of room and some sleep too!! Qantas not all bad. 👍👍👍Happy travels. Ps, have a happy, safe, Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thanks Les, sorry for the delay in replying, I just arrived in Seoul, South Korea after a fantastic flight with Qantas. Merry Christmas to you and all the best for the New Year.
great video. Was your checked bags transferred from finanair to Qantas. Were they strict with the checked baggager weight. How would you rate the customer service, food and seat comfort?
In Helsinki my bag was checked all the way to Sydney, so Helsinki - London - Perth - Sydney. I did have to collect it at Perth to enter Australia, then it was re-checked at a dedicated counter and back through security and another 4hrs+ on a flight. The customer service was excellent, seat comfortable and food was good. It isn't Michelin Star dining, but it tasted good, and was adequate.
Thank you, I found the meals satisfactory for the flight, keeping in mind I did opt for the lighter meals and the fruit plate (partly due to eating in the lounge pre departure)
I think that I fed guests in my house such a poor amount of food, they would never come again and I could not look at my self in the mirror again. A salad, some party pies and a fruit salad over an 18 hour period is just plain mean. And why does Qantas insist in serving bread on a napkin when it will inevitably end up on a table that provably has not been cleaned since Adam was a boy?
787s = 3 kinds of in economy. Was designed for 8 across seating but 90% of airlines use 9 across. Japan airlines is an exception. If you are flying to Perth maybe worth it but not Syd/Mel/Bris etc as you have to change planes and go domestic. If it takes too long to get out of immigration, then you might miss your connection onwards, as happened to me. Of course you wont get the next plane out of Perth, you might have to wait half the day, as did I.
When I do eventually make a first return to Aus, are there advantages to enter on an Aus passport, to which I am entitled too, or stick with my UK one.
Depending on the Airport, most of the time using an Australian Passport will allow you to use the Smart Gates, I think a UK passport will also work but sometimes they are a seperate queue which can be longer.
I need to check my time stamps on the original unedited videos, but I believe the lights were out and windows locked for at least 8-9 hours. Being a day departure and arrival they keep the lights on for a few hours after take off, and prior to landing.
Think you just convinced me to fly Qantas LHR to Perth. I don't like the idea of a stopover. Economy looks comfortable enough and the meals and snacks look ok.
Economy is fine, taking into account I had the lightest meal offering (there was a Hot Beef or Chicken choice, plus Hot Breakfast). Snacks are available at any time during the flight. You will not go hungry.
While watching I noticed the seat on the left of you, row 59 was missing the entertainment screen? Does it have the system electronics box underneath that seat? Les.
So Row 59 on the Dreamliner is where the fuselage narrows, so the 2 seats 59A & 59B use the space of 2.5 seats. 59A is closer to being directly behind 59B, hence why no screen to the left. The IFE box is tiny on the Dreamliner so it is hard to notice. Great thing with 59A you have 2 seats to stow stuff under, plus a big gap between the seat and the window.
When I have some time I will see if I can listen to the original video file which has the volume louder and see if something like Shazam can identify it.
Heathrow Terminal 3 opened in 1961. It should have been rebuilt like Terminal 2 many years ago. The passenger experience is awful and not fit for purpose. I was embarrassed when I picked up my Aunt when she arrived at Terminal 3 on the non-stop from Perth. Stick to Terminal 2 or 5 if you want a reasonably decent experience at Heathrow.
Yeah, T3 is showing its age. There is talk it is going to get redeveloped, or moved, but given how busy LHR is, I have no idea how they will achieve either with any ease.
Firstly, Premium Economy and Business Class were 100% full, so no option to upgrade anyway. Secondly, the demand is so high for premium cabins on flights like this where every using points to upgrade is near impossible unless you have Platinum status or higher (which I have).
most of my flights are seated in the back row, some aircraft types do have a slight restriction, but we are talking about 1-2cm, not noticeable. These still had a gap between the seat & the wall when fully reclined.
Economy was about 80% full, with both Premium Economy and Business Class 100% full. Keep in mind I had a 3hr flight from Helsinki before this, then a 4hr+ flight from Perth to Sydney afterwards, so the Jetlag was in full effect when I got home.
This was part of a bigger ticket, approx AU$2,100 for Sydney to Singapore, then London & Helsinki. Returning from Helsinki to London, then Perth & lastly to Sydney
I've seen a few vlogs of this trip. Are there empty seats because of the sheer distance (weight)? I must say this has to be a bucket list trip, not least because Perth looks fantastic anyway.
I live in Perth originally from uk and I wouldn’t even consider going on that flight back home to visit .especially on qantas,2 meals joke, cheaper with emirates better food more room, and better time keeping
Meals are fine (it isn't a Michelin Star Restaurant) and the actual seat pitch on the QF Dreamliner is better than the Emirates A380's and especially the B777's. Also to note, QF meals are prepared by DNata, aka Emirates.
The cost… I would rather do half a dozen long haul trips down the back than 1 trip up front. Plus a lot of the time I have the seat next to me, or entire row empty to stretch out.
@@phillloyd5233 cost is irrelevant when the ticket (that was A$2,100) was Sydney - Singapore - London - Helsinki then Helsinki - London - Perth - Sydney. So really I could say AU$400 but that would be misleading.
In order to watch my wife compete in the 2000 Sydney Games I flew on Qantas 16 hours from Los Angeles to Sydney......in economy.....in the middle seat.....in the screaming baby section
@@taxi134-y1q My wife did not medal at the 2000 Sydney Games but in all honesty it is a big achievement simply to get to go. From the time I left my house in North Carolina until I got to my hotel room in Parramatta it was a 36 hour journey. When I got out to her venue the next day I was surprised to find that her team had to have a bodyguard since the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen had just occurred. He was a very nice plainclothes NSW Police officer and even after 24 years we still hear from him at Christmas time. One very nice thing that occurred was that I was sitting on a hillside overlooking the competition area since I wanted to get a nice photo of my wife competing with the big electronic scoreboard behind her with her name and USA on it. So what do you do when you are waiting for her compete? You chat with all of the locals enjoying a picnic around you. So I was surprised when my wife competed that it wasn't just me cheering and applauding her, it was all of the local Australians cheering for her as well. It brought tears to my eyes. I think Australians should feel very proud of how they presented the Games in 2000.
Meals are actually fine, they taste good and some of the options maybe were a little more exciting, but after eating in the lounge before the flight I usually opt for lighter meals.
Economy was roughly 80% full. Premium Economy & Business Class were 100% full. I am not adverse to sitting next to anyone, but it is nice when I get the next seat, or in some cases an entire row to myself.
Good for Australians who could fly to Mars and back non stop without a complain. For the rest of human beings it’s an absolute nightmare. It seems that human beings are able to chew everything the airlines give them. And give an applause afterwards.
Thus will be me in 3wks!! The flight out is a breeze. Its nice knowing you will be seeing family at the other end and you dont have the faff of deplaning, stopovers etc! Leave in daylight and arrive to bright blue skues and sun! The return is not so good! Long drawn out, whole time in the dark. 3wks recovery time!! Qantas are not a very tolerate airline and if i had another non stop airline i could use, i would not use them. Had some really bad experiences with them in the past. This year, i had 40000 airmiles which they decided to take from me as i gadnt travelled in 18months. I go every 2yrs - as its expensive! They are out out of order! Customer service much to be desired!
The meals were perfectly fine and in line, if not better than what a lot of other airlines offer. You will find within the year, if not sooner no airline will be offering tray service in Economy. They started off with a snack & drink, then the meal is served with a focaccia or similar and another drink, with various dessert options, this flight had the ice creams, I just got off a flight to Seoul and we had chocolate mousse & fruit... it changes. Just an FYI regarding the food, it is prepared by DNata, aka Emirates.
Not sure where you got your facts but almost all other full service carrier serves economy meals with trays. Perhaps the meal is adequate enough for you but less so for others with bigger appetites. The snack and drink before main meal is pretty standard in the industry.
There is more than enough food, and you are free to help yourself to snacks at any time during the flight, or ask the crew. I usually always opt for the lightest and smallest meals due to eating in the lounge before the flight.
Avoid Heathrow Terminal 3..choose another routing if you can, it is dreadful.. Absolutely packed especially the main seating area, squashed between all the noisy, u relaxing and brightly lit shops... noisy, oppressively low ceilings.. It's a horrible experience.
Commends to you for doing this on economy. Most UA-camrs tend to go with business. Planning to hopefully go to Australia someday. Country is very close to my heart. 🇦🇺🦘❤️ Besides the self snack, are they meals provided or do you have to purchase?
This was excellent. Ignore any criticism. A great insight into the long haul without unnecessary faffing around. I hate when I'm taken into the loo.
I take the criticism with the praise. Everyone has their own opinions, and I just do this for fun. It is like I am catching the flight anyway, so if I can share it with others... win/win. Thank you
My salute to those who can tolerate that many hrs cooped up with a bunch of strangers. A 7 hr flight is my maximum flight length that I can tolerate.
Most of the strangers are tolerable... but from time to time you do get those that you wish would go for a quick walk outside (joking)...
Nice little concise video, not 2 hours of a plane wing like some people upload..4k clarity is fantastic
Thank you

What possessed you to go for 59A, a bit more left elbow room, but limited recline and next to the dunny.
Full recline on the B787, huge amount of extra room including a second seat in front to stow stuff. Dunny has never been an issue.
@@ausflyer Interesting to know, as every source I've found says that seat is limited recline.
most of my flights are seated in the back row, some aircraft types do have a slight restriction, but we are talking about 1-2cm, not noticeable. These still had a gap between the seat & the wall when fully reclined.
Looks great, was the flight fairly busy or many empty seats? Bet the jetlag was awful!
Economy was about 80% full, with both Premium Economy and Business Class 100% full. Keep in mind I had a 3hr flight from Helsinki before this, then a 4hr+ flight from Perth to Sydney afterwards, so the Jetlag was in full effect when I got home.
Did you have WiFi on the flight?
@@freddiemac1438 no, that is getting added next year (I quite like the break from my devices).
What was cost of this flight?
This was part of a bigger ticket, approx AU$2,100 for Sydney to Singapore, then London & Helsinki. Returning from Helsinki to London, then Perth & lastly to Sydney
@@ausflyer Wow, a very decent price. Well done.
@@adriankirk4644 booked back in February when some fares were on sale.
Looks like there was plenty of room between the seats for economy
For economy seating the seat pitch and width is good.
I've seen a few vlogs of this trip. Are there empty seats because of the sheer distance (weight)? I must say this has to be a bucket list trip, not least because Perth looks fantastic anyway.
Economy was only 80% sold, Premium Economy & Business Class were 100% full.
Apparently most days all cabins are totally full.
I live in Perth originally from uk and I wouldn’t even consider going on that flight back home to visit .especially on qantas,2 meals joke, cheaper with emirates better food more room, and better time keeping
Ahhh a whinging POHM who still calls the uk “home” - see ya🇦🇺.
Meals are fine (it isn't a Michelin Star Restaurant) and the actual seat pitch on the QF Dreamliner is better than the Emirates A380's and especially the B777's. Also to note, QF meals are prepared by DNata, aka Emirates.
Why not business class on such a long flight?
The cost… I would rather do half a dozen long haul trips down the back than 1 trip up front. Plus a lot of the time I have the seat next to me, or entire row empty to stretch out.
I noticed there was no mention of the cost in the vlog....??@@ausflyer
@@phillloyd5233 cost is irrelevant when the ticket (that was A$2,100) was Sydney - Singapore - London - Helsinki then Helsinki - London - Perth - Sydney.
So really I could say AU$400 but that would be misleading.
In order to watch my wife compete in the 2000 Sydney Games I flew on Qantas 16 hours from Los Angeles to Sydney......in economy.....in the middle seat.....in the screaming baby section
That sounds like torture… ouch
How did she get on?
Great video! Agree with the others, those meals don't look very exciting. Much prefer to fly with EK or SQ with a short stopover.
Meals are actually fine, they taste good and some of the options maybe were a little more exciting, but after eating in the lounge before the flight I usually opt for lighter meals.
Thankes❤❤❤❤
Thank you
*Amazing Aircraft the Boing B787 (Dreamliner) but the Airbus 380 Much better !*
The A380 is my favourite, followed by the A350, then the B787
If you can do 17 hrs what’s the issue with 20hrs?
It is 20hrs+
Some of the flights may be closer to 22-23hrs… for me personally… no thank you.
I think the experience would have been different with someone beside and in front of you. i am surprised how many empty seats there was.
Economy was roughly 80% full. Premium Economy & Business Class were 100% full.
I am not adverse to sitting next to anyone, but it is nice when I get the next seat, or in some cases an entire row to myself.
Nice video but I miss an overall assessment at the end of the flight.
Im nit sure I could do it. Think its better to stop in Dubai
Stopping in Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong... plenty of options to cater for everyone.
Good for Australians who could fly to Mars and back non stop without a complain. For the rest of human beings it’s an absolute nightmare. It seems that human beings are able to chew everything the airlines give them. And give an applause afterwards.
There have been meals, and food items that I have passed on. I would rather be glass half full, rather than half empty.
Concorde at 8.40
Seeing the Concorde at LHR is always a bonus
All the meals look very very sad and cheap, not even a proper tray, no appetiser, no proper dessert etc. Peasant class (aka cost cutting) with Qantas.
The onboard meals did not look very enticing.
They were actually quite good, keeping in mind there were multiple options and I took the lightest one. There was also a Beef & a Chicken offering.
That doesn’t look like a lot of food for a 17 hour flight, and it looks very cheap too.
There is more than enough food, and you are free to help yourself to snacks at any time during the flight, or ask the crew.
I usually always opt for the lightest and smallest meals due to eating in the lounge before the flight.
Thai 🇹🇭 777 behind you too 😅
Bundaberg Ginger beer ? No......🤧
It works... unfortunately they don't have any of the craft ginger beers
Avoid Heathrow Terminal 3..choose another routing if you can, it is dreadful.. Absolutely packed especially the main seating area, squashed between all the noisy, u relaxing and brightly lit shops... noisy, oppressively low ceilings.. It's a horrible experience.
Pies, tams and ginger beer - we’re the friggin best arent we🇦🇺🇦🇺.
No mate, we the British are the best.
Don't forget that !!!!
Pies, Tim Tams, Ginger Beer AND the English Potato Chips were all good
Bitte❤❤
Thank you
Not even champagne offered in the first lounge by Qantas
Yes there was, I just chose not to ask for it.
Impossible!
Not that bad actually…
I doubt I could do this flight as often as I fly to Asia (8-10hrs)… but definitely doable.
Still too longer flight to the end of the world
But a glorious end of the world...
@ausflyer was 50 years ago I have fondest memories
Commends to you for doing this on economy. Most UA-camrs tend to go with business. Planning to hopefully go to Australia someday. Country is very close to my heart. 🇦🇺🦘❤️
Besides the self snack, are they meals provided or do you have to purchase?
