I’m a singer by profession and always enjoyed performing this when I did it. One day a friend invited me to a garden party of someone he knew well I didn’t know him that well turned out it was his mother’s birthday it had a full p.a system set for a karaoke and full blown party. after a few bottles n good times in full swing the birthday girl approached myself and my friend who bought me along I mean she knew my name n stuff then she asked if I was the singer my friend spoke about I replied yes I do a bit but don’t worry I won’t inflict the pain I produce up on you seeing it’s your birthday she chuckled and asked if I ever sang the circle of life before I said I had but not for many years knowing a request may be coming my way I quickly added not to worry I would not be demanding the mic n force people to listen anyway she said she was disappointed n not happy a pissed version by her husband would definitely be coming after my mate pressured me into doing it for her. got hold of the mic saying haven’t done this song in years pointing to my mate blame him if I fuk up the birthday girl’s husband appeared from nowhere like an alien or something he was half cut and demanded I give him the mic as he does the song best n it’s his wife who loves the song he warned me if I fuk up I’ll get it as she gets upset by people who can’t sing ruining it for her absolutely no clue it’s him who ruins it every time the song starts n of I go with my Elton impression more Elton esq than full blown impression anyway coming to the end of the track ( by the way hubby didn’t like me dedicating it to her and joking cash only no cheques plz ) as am finishing I noticed a group of people around the birthday girl when someone moved I noticed the woman I dedicated it to in floods of tears as were the group around her I’m thinking shit am dead couldn’t have been that bad I knew I was in tune and the right key I pulled my mate over and almost stuttering I asked if I’d upset her it was then he told me ahh no that song she thinks of her mum who died suddenly years before the he said AND she wanted someone to sing it properly other than Elton John to do it ( she owned the place we were in and acts that were booked to perform not one knew or could do it my mate said her daughter had said her mum loved it. Relieved I said thanks n asked why she was upset the answer fuked the rest of my night up I don’t mind saying. Turns out she was stage 4 pancreatic cancer n had weeks to live. after that I was sobbing away for her and her family she came over and gave me a huge compliment for my performance of her fave song she asked what was up with me looked like I had been crying I said I had just heard about her fight her idiot husband thought I was crapping myself as he was going to sort me out ruining her fave song at that point it all went surreal I mean just imagine being put on the spot to sing when you don’t want to do a song not sang for years battling the ego of a husband who thinks he’s great at entertaining oh and a dying woman consoling ME because I was sad for her anyway I had to sing that song one more time 6weeks later when she passed on her son could play piano so we did an vocal and piano accompaniment. Even had to send the husband down the road for cigarettes just so he didn’t geg in half way through song and ruin it. Haven’t heard the circle of life since that day several years ago but as soon as I heard the intro to it then all the memories came flooding back like it was yesterday. One thing is guaranteed though I will never ever be singing that song again I wrote that in the sympathy card I’d got with flowers for her basically said I wouldn’t actually I promised I wouldn’t and that’s a small but full blown meant as a tribute from me to her and guaranteed never again hear bad singers on karaoke hack it to pieces the song has gone with her and her daughters have banned the song ever being played or sang tunelessly again.
