    Review Pros :
Exceptionally lightweight - so light that you can throw it into your pack for just about any reason including a dry place to sit when at camp instead of having to hunker down inside of your tent.
Makes an excellent emergency shelter as long as you have the knowledge to use it correctly - that is a good point to make - Tarps can be excellent shelters but it does take some knowledge to do so correctly especially as weather conditions change.
Quality is excellent - excellent sewing/seams
Stretchy, strong fabric - You wouldn’t think it by looking at it or feeling it (it’s feather-light and semi-transparent), but the fabric is very strong. It’s also easy to get taut.
    Easy to pack
Reinforced attachment points - The fabric loop attachment points (not grommets) have stood up to lots of pulling and straining on my part.
    Ease to use
Stuff bag is plenty big to easily get the tarp into with guy lines attached and plenty of tent stakes.
Well thought out with plenty of tie off points for virtually any setup
Center rigging point allows for some very unique setups.
    Review Cons :
Lightweight and quality come at a cost
Fabric attachments take a while to dry - The attachment points aren’t waterproof. If they’re going into the compression bag wet (as they usually will be) then they’ll be coming out wet.

When I was in the army on long range patrols. We’d use our ponchos in the same manner. Tie off the four corners with 550 cord and tie off the poncho hood in the center for the “storm mode.” Many times we just carry that because it lessened our load. It worked well.

Luke, it’s your go to emergency tarp. If it were mine I wouldn’t care too much about the price. The function would carry more weight in my decision. Your tarp is big enough, light weight, flexible, ideal. I think it’s a fine choice. A man could do worse. Good on you. Texas

If you know how to run a sewing machine (Like I do), and have sewn for decades,..you can make any tarp out there, as all the same materials can be purchased on Ebay by the yard. I make my own so I can add D-Rings, Loops, Velcro, etc anywhere I want it to be on the tarp. I no longer buy tarps since making my own in the size I want/need. It's MUCH cheaper, and you get the satisfaction you made it yourself.

we all don't have that luxury....you should try selling some on Etsy and other sites....I'm sure some hardcore campers/backpackers would pay for it especially if its being made by someone who knows what they're doing.....

    • @wisenber

It's much cheaper if you don't place any value on the time you spent making it.
I've done my share of DIY from tarps to sailboats. One thing I have discovered is that making it yourself isn't always cheaper than buying a completed product when factoring in the amount of time required. Then again, I bill by the hour, so I usually frame things in those terms.
I'm glad I've made made the things I have, but I understand that it's not always less costly to do so.

@@ItAintMeBabe99 Depends on what I need. I buy all sorts, including Canvas to make my Van & camper awnings. You can get everything from No-see-um mesh, to Polyester, Nylon, Camo fabric, etc. It's ll on there to make whatever a person would need.

      @EKEACRES 4 роки тому

@@wisenber Do to the greed factor today, I find that it is becoming more & more necessary for people to learn how to make as much themselves as possible. I not only make my own Tarps, but I build my own Teardrop campers (I've built 5 so far, which is on my channel), make awnings, tarps, and hand make all my own fishing lures, such as spinners and spoons.

A very very recent subscriber here Luke .
I find it difficult to praise without sounding/coming across as some sort of kiss***.
    But . . . . .
I can honestly say it's refreshing to have an unbiased agenda free review of the products on your channel.
I like the fact that you're not afraid to tell the audience that you've purchased secondhand or bought new with your own cash , or via Patreon donations .
There are far too many channels that review brand new kit that's been used for one or two times and call it good . Without thorough testing .
A small point of note on your video's that I've noticed . That for me is a stand out feature , which speaks volumes , to me at least .
That fact that no matter what when filming you include it in the final cut . There are those that would cuss out the crows , planes etc for the "inconsiderate" interruption . but you make a feature of it . It's life . It happens . Move on . I like that about your delivery .
Anyway enough "kissa**" LOL . But credit where credit's due .
Keep up the good work .
The internet seems far too eager to criticise these days . And praise seems to be frowned upon .
I am slowly working my way through your back catalogue (It's taking some time ::Shocker::)
Looking forward to the next episode already .
    Thank you .
Merry Christmas and an awesome new year.
    Strength and Honour.

The tarp is great! The price a little steep, but then you factor in all those tie outs and I can think of several different ways to Incorporate that into making a shelter for any type of situation. You could also in a emergency situation use the bag from the tarp it came in to forage. I also like the fact that you said that you picked yours up off of eBay, to try and save some money for people that are beginners. As I tell people on my channel do your homework, take the time to try and save money. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

MRTs carry them too as they can be quickly placed over a patient for cover and/or rewarming and also easier to deploy on people with broken limbs or suspected spinal injuries.

    Thats an excellent tarp.
An alternative to this tarp, which has bigger coverage (70"x108"), weigh less (7.45 oz) and cost less (65$) is the Borahgear Silnylo Tarp. Via email, they said it packs down to a softball. 10x10x10 cm. That's significantly less pack size than the expensive Cuban fiber tarps. Those cost 260$. (Zpacks)
PS, I've not tried it jet, but it was recommended by Jupiterhikes.

I have one of these from before they were bought out. It’s a ST3 or 4 (the biggest they made at the time). It’s gigantic, (10x12, I think) and was expensive at the time but still looks brand new after about 10 years of moderate use and weighs almost nothing. Just a heads up. I had to seam seal it myself. I don’t know if they do it at the factory since rebranding now, but anyone buying them should confirm it before using. Not a big thing but important to know before fielding it. They’re great UL tarps.

I have a fairly cheap silnylon poncho which is a clone of the Army designed Ponchos. The size is about 87 x 57 inch so similar size and only a little heavier - due to the hood, toggles etc. I guess which is extra over a tarp. I keep it in my pack even when I have a normal rain coat for all the same reasons, it can be used the same way virtually as the tarp - except tie up the hood! Or use it as the centre tie point. Some of the better Chinese ones like AOTU are only $10 on GearBest at the moment! So its a no brainer on price too, well worth a look for budget conscious people or for a spare to keep in the car or laptop bag etc etc.

A milspec poncho can do what this tarp does and more; it's a better choice for this purpose. Put this size tarp through it's paces in a real storm and you'll find that you need something a bit larger to do a good shelter like the DD tarp at 3m X 3m. If you are so far into the wilds that an emergency shelter might be needed you should already be clothed appropriately for regular and expected weather; an emergency shelter needs to be able to take over from there no matter how bad the weather gets. This tarp is better than nothing but so is a dollar-store shower curtain- just saying...

A Dollar Store shower curtain lner also works for an emergency shelter. You can at least set it up as a leanto. Tie off the guy lines on to the magnets and tieout like a tent or tarp. . Use small rocks or smal pine cone on top edge by twisting them into liner for a ridge line. Much cheaper and you can use it for a rain poncho to cover you and your pack while hiking. Curtain liner about $4.00 dollars and up to about $12; . Use can also use a car win sheild foilds protecter to lie on in an emercgency. Tranfers heat reall decent. best for short people .

Current price on Amazon for this tarp is $111.00. I use the Bushcraft Outfitters 5x8 MEST tarp. $39.00 and made in the USA. Excellent construction, durable and weighs 9 oz. The MEST lacks a center tie-out, but adding one takes 5 minutes and allows for any setup you can do with this over-priced option.
