Definitely a good idea to analyze your games (win, lose or draw). I believe just playing, playing, playing doesn't help you improve rating much and can lead you to repeating old habits (often bad).
The pendulum swings. From needing to play faster to needing to play slower and either way... You lose on time. There's a beautiful analogy somewhere in here about the inevitability of our ends no matter which path we choose.
Nice on learning the Ruy Lopez exchange - 5. Nxe5 Qe7 also works as black (instead of Nxe5 Qd4), and the best move for white is to castle instead of taking the pawn :D
@@drvofoka7033 Each to his own, but a 30 min game, getting his full thought process, would make for an interesting video. Omg, i restarted playing chess because of NL, initially my elo was ~1100 and my goal was to get a higher elo than him. Finally I got to 1480 in blitz yesterday and lo and behold NL is 1377. All it took was for him to play terribly for a week
It always amazes me just how much programming jargon NL remembers (and uses properly) for someone who - if I remember correctly - only studied it and never worked in the field
19:44 I'm confused why black didn't just take with pawn instead of trading queens? Was breaking the king's pawn wall really not worth being up a queen?
@@diggoran they were attacking so they should not have offered a trade of Queens, but if black took with the pawn NL would not have recaptured the pawn with his queen because he would have lost his queen for nothing. I think black was just trying to simplify because he didn't have a way to involve his other pieces quick enough (specifically his rooks) and was worried he might have gotten his queen trapped and lost it.
@@diggoran yea I think he should have just taken the bishop it was a nice line to even out material after sacrificing his own bishop earlier to gain a positional advantage by destroying NL's pawn structure, if he was worried about his queen he very easily in that position could have gotten the queen to safety and tried to take some pawns on the other side or bring his other pieces up for an attack, NL was in a terrible position at this moment and black totally gave away their attack and gave NL the benefit of allowing his king to develop into an almost endgame situation.
I need some help! I'm looking for one of NLs chess videos were he plays really well and finds a move that at first seems a bit risky but turns out was one of few good ones. It's not the brilliant move, most creative attack or the most beautiful checkmate. I recall the move he found ocurred on the left side of the board
I know you get this a lot in the YT videos. But I think you should play a slightly slower time control just to make sure you are not loosing on time because you spend so much calculating. However, since streams "demands" fast games instead of going for really slow games like 15+10 you could try 5+5 (Which is a bit slower than current and will give you some times to not loose on time as frequently) and eventually switch to 5+0 or 3+2 once you are more confident on your opening and tactics/premoves
That initial exchange he was planning, am I wrong to believe that the knight wouldn’t have been able to take his knight because it would be exposing the king to check? I’ve never played chess but been really enjoying these videos and learning the game via NL.
I know there’s some weirdos that are mad about the new thumbnails and such but I’ll be honest. The thumbnail and title of this video are why I clicked.
It's not actually bad to leave your queen hanging. You give away your queen in order to play faster, I learned that from Dan.
I used to be 1400 but now I'm 300 thanks to Dan's Gambit 😎
Dan screeching incoherently: "You gotta prejack!"

Thank you egg, now I will remember to always analyze my wins chess
We should all take his advice to analyse our wins chess
Hey NL have you considered trying a time control like 3+2? It might be better for spending less time early while not flagging in endgames
5+5 was made for NL

I love nothing more than NL quoting one of Levi’s videos

You know playing 15 minute or 30 minute games would be fine. It would allow you to talk and not fall behind in time.
I'd love to see it too, but he believes longer time control would make for a more serious, and therefore less enjoyable, experience for him.
15 minutes maybe, but 30? Are you serious? That's one match per video, fuck that.

17:00 - What is it called when you do a bunch of analysis on a move, but still make the wrong one? A brain slip?
Yo NL, in the Spanish opening, white wants to castle because the f1 rook protects the e file via a pin threat.
hey northernlion you dropped these ( )
Literally any move being up +20 is excellent haha
No need to play with longer time control, but play with increments. Or you are forced to play incredibly fast towards the endgame.
Maybe just try playing 5+5 if you still want to keep fast time controls? That way you will at least have a chance to play an endgame.
Finally more Northernlion chess
I think you'd gain 100 rating points instantly if you just try to get castled asap in your games. Castling is of the essence in the opening.
