I think such things are useful for timing, distancing and demonstrating traditional basics. They are also useful for understanding body shift in balance. As a karate instructor myself, i also think they are limited however. No attack in the street looks like that. If all you rely on are such drills, one day, you may get a nasty shock!!! It’s not what you train, it’s how you train. My view is that you have to keep it real too. I have students that have come from other clubs say to me, ‘I’ve done a lot of karate but not much self defence!’ These kihons are very stylised. The street is very messy!
Always someone with a negative/obvious comment to make. You can’t compare karate basics to the street, keeping it real. That’s like saying the alphabet is not useful for writing poetry. This is basic drill, a part of the syllabus. In the street you will resort to survival, and if you have your whits about you, there will be no need to fight.
In a lot of Dojos, you learn that even since yellow Belt, so when you start to prepare for 1st Dan its much more easier, same goes with renzoku, wazas, etc
