I just watched the episode where that tiefling made a massive mistake with the dice. Hits me right in the feels.

many D&D campaigns turn into groups of "murderhobos"; this one, much like my group, would probably be better described as "assholehobos"
Intro: Efficiently wipe out an army of nagas in a 7 man perfect formation
Campaign: We tried to steal a cookie and it escalated into world War 4, somehow getting more than one god involved

One great thing I don’t see praised enough is the transitions, they’re Edgar Wright level, the movement brings your visual attention to where the next character will be.
This is most notable at 0:51 Where Fjord’s movements transition perfect into Nott’s, making it incredibly easy on they eye.
This is also shown in the fact that the characters are almost always dead centre, this means that the watcher doesn’t need to move their sight so much and so more time can be spent paying attention to the animation.
Whoever did the animation deserves a an award or two.
More examples: 0:13 The iris of the eye is in centre, then zooms inward to get Fjord, remaining in centre.
0:20 Beauregard’s fist movements cleanly follow through to Nott’s footsteps, allowing our eyes to easily follow the action.
0:27 Jester opens the door in centre, and remains centre on the other side, and still again when leaving, keeping it easy on the eyes.
0:33 Jester is (again) in the centre and Caduceus’ hat allows for more easy tracking to the next shot, where it is caught and leads right to the bottom of the smoke at 0:34, allowing us to track it when it slides up.

@@The.Orange.Wizard 1:04 is a good, obvious one too with the sword turning into the pole. And then the wave of the coat catches your attention, so your eyes are already in that spot when it transitions to Cad.
also the beauregard - yasha transition is awesome too. i love it when video nerds point out such details.
I love how Matt is a sort of “villain” at the end. Very Erie.
Every intro always has him show up at the end, though with this and the 2nd intro he got to play into the mysterious side of things by showing up as the Dungeon Master instead of just being Matt like the first and third intros.

Because now it's not just a mental image. Now it's a visual thing. The moment they buried Molly was so visceral is it was the moment the went from a rag tag group that would do good but were not a cohesive group to now they have cohesion and a reason to become the heros they would become. It's what made the three free members decide to stick around and fight for their people so they wouldn't lose any one else if they could help it.

This is the original. Daggers and cunning is the alteration for the animated series.
@@darjanator actually, "daggers and cunning" is the original! when they made the song they were playing as vox machina, so when the second campaign began, they changed this verse to "falchions and cunning" because of fjord :p

I have a son 9 months old... When he first heard this song, his eyes lit up. It is his favorite song of all, and just humming the melody makes his snap around to find the song. He even gets mad if we don't find it fast enough :D

Okay but why do I always get chills at 0:35 when it says “and they raise from the flames for the battles ahead” and it cuts to a traumatized Caleb?
What gives me chills is the distortion in the voice at "ahread"
I've been trying for years to learn to grawl like this and I can'ttttt

@lil crispy The reveal is relatively early on.. maybe in the first 25-30 episodes?
@lil crispy The trick is to have the videos playing in the background while you do something else and merely listen to the games. I personally paint miniatures while listening to them and just glancing up to my screen if something special is happening between the cast =D
@lil crispy for the first 50 ish episodes,I would listen while shinyhunting (hatching eggs untill a Pokemon with a abnormal color hatched) but after that the show became so interesting and I became so invested that I now the episodes have my full attention so I can see the minis,and more importantly,the faces of the cast.

@@rhysred5652 it's right after 0:15! it's faint for sure, but if you listen for it you can hear the first "vox machina". it's repeated twice/thrice before the "mighty nein" replaces it, right when beau's scene switches over to nott's.

1:07 one thing that I love about the idea of building a story as a DnD campaing, it's that all it's bound to the dice, a death can come at any moment, either they (Matt and friends) want it or not.

I just love how the intro shows every members fighting style perfectly but my absolute favourite is that sequence at 1:00 when Beau spins all light and fast and then Yasha's sword strike feels so powerfull and heavy

Keep at it! You're actually about halfway to the 2nd (and much better) opening for the first campaign. Episode 50 starts that one. Once you start C2, you'll get the funky 70's style intro and this one kicks off at C2E44.

It looks like she draws on the additional darkness of the shadows, as the detailing around her legs and arms is suctioned towards her centre before returning.
I love how my first time watching this was my introduction to critical role when I was hanging out with my sister-in-law over Christmas and I loved this animation the first few times I watched it. Now, revisiting it after watching a chunk of The Mighty Nein, I can recognize background characters, battle scenes, and I understand the hints or flashes of character backstories and I just think that's pretty neat

You know what I love the most about this intro? From the music to the imagery, it perfectly captures the magic and thrill of playing D&D in a way that I have not seen anywhere else.

Yeah, the funky intro was fun for the first 5-10 episodes, but it started to get old after that. This is, I believe, the longest running intro they've had since starting the show, and I still love it every time.

Ashley's got a great singing voice I feel like we don't hear very often

I got my 70 year old mother to start watching CR2 this last summer and she's HOOKED on Episode 13, (The Cerberus Assembly and The Krinn Dynasty just had their first appearance fighting over the Dodecohedron). She love it now, and has NO idea what she's in for.

I always thought the bit at 01:16 was Beau's ki flaring up somehow, but now I actually watch Caduceus during that bit and you're right. Also explains that energy's colour, if the crystal in his staff is factoring into it.

Came to watch this after the new C3 animated opening. Still gotta go with this one only because I like the actual theme better. The animation is neck and neck, maybe slightly better with C3 and C3 has a lot more action shots but man this one just hits everything.... The build up to Fjord falling into the water starting the theme, the way it shows glimpses of everyone's backstory and the Mollymauk grave being the emotional linchpin. Just so damn good.
Still, the new C3 one is definitely the second best now. This has reigned supreme since it's release but can't deny that the new C3 one is also top tier.
Came here for the same thing. I'm so happy we finally got an animated intro for C3 and i love it but this intro will be hands down the best one they've done. The timing and transistion are so good!

I've just got partway through the episode after his death to take a break, only to see his cape fluttering in the wind in this video and tears just start to well up again.
I haven’t watched the episode yet but I’m already heartbroken.
I love how they characterize Matt as a veiled figure constantly puppeteering the enemies.
The thing is once you start watching the series all of this begins to make way more sense
This intro was my introduction to Critical Role itself. I found this video, got interested, started listening to Campaign 2. I am currently on session 107 if I remember correctly.
Just thinking about the shot with Caduceus when they show Taliesin's name. There's a butterfly in the shot and Cad watches it and I think that's like so important and stop me if you heard this before I want to get this brain fart out. The animators are Filipino so like while the shot with Molly's coat and Raven!Vax means so much, in the Philippines, whenever a relative/loved one dies, if you see a butterfly nearby, that's their spirit and they're watching over you and like I'm gonna think about this for a while. It's like the ravens, I guess.

Woah, I did not realize those facts! What you said was also true, because several days before my grandma died, a brown butterfly fluttered in our shop and stayed there for a day. We did not realize that until we got the news.
In Irish Mythology they’re though to carry the souls of dead children to the next world
John Lavery and Taliesin Jaffe did Mollymauk’s voice with an Irish accent too.
That is so interesting, in Greek Mythology butterflies *are* the souls of the dead. The word psyche means butterfly but also mind/soul (modern greek has its own word for butterfly I believe)
I think it's fancinating that different cultures far appart have similar associations with this

Just gonna say, I'm almost through half of C2, and it took me about 4 months to watch C1.
You have literally over 1000 hours of video ahead of you, so be warned. Even if every episode were only 4 hours in length, you could only get through 6 episodes in one day -- and there are 115 episodes for C1, not counting one-shots (of which there are three), and 141 episodes of C2.
That literally translates into 256 episodes, with roughly 1,024 hours of time to invest.
Literally, if CR was a seasonal show with a 1-hour timeframe, and a 22-episode seasonal schedule, there would be 46.5 _years'_ worth of content to watch.
THE SERIES IS ANNOUNCED, AND THIS INTRO IS ONCE AGAIN ON REPEAT
There are certain bits of animation I hyperfixate on and can't get out of my head, and the shot at 1:24 of the camera swooping under the party is one of them, it's SO GOOD

Yeah, I found out before I decided to start the campaign when I came across some fan art and was wondering “where’s the purple guy I’ve seen in other art?” Then looked at the wiki and have been counting down the episodes since. I was three episodes off in my count so it came sooner and I was not ready

Fun fact: at some point they updated the intro to have Molly's cloak blow off in the wind.
It's been updated a couple of times. The coat is the biggest new change, but they've swapped out the flashes of various NPCs at the end at least twice that I can recall
