I think a lot of people don't realize how difficult non-speaking acting can be. That's what makes this movie so AMAZING! Conveying his emotions simply through his actions.
@@Mark_E_M Seriously, she actually does a great job. Fear is a difficult emotion to convey, especially without dialogue. It's easy to be either completely unconvincing or too exaggerated. She strikes the balance very well.
I saw this in the theater when it was originally released. On the big screen the plane crash scene was terrifying, especially when the engine exploded. Also, did you notice no musical score played in any of the island scenes? That was very effective in putting the viewer into the situation, with only the sounds of the breakers, wind, rain, etc. And the film's title foreshadowed how Chuck would feel. A "castaway" (one word) is a shipwrecked person, but the title is two words, "Cast Away".
For people who've been stranded alone for long periods of time, talking to yourself and even acting like you're talking to another person, actually helps you deal with the situation. It's some sort of mental shield people tend to instinctively use to help deal with the stress and trauma of the situation they're in. This film portrays it pretty well, the ball isn't actually needed but I think that was to help the audience.
Tom often joked that the unopened box contained a satellite phone, lol. But when asked what he would do at the end of the movie, he said he went back to that lady, they settled down and had lots of babies :) Btw, you are purdy smart. One look at those skates and you saw them for what they were, or rather, could be... sharp tools. Meanwhile in my theatre viewing, it fell on huge laughter, like that's the last thing you need on a tropical island, winter skates :/

It didn’t matter what was IN the package, it was the fact that he needed to make sure it was delivered! You saw his passion for making sure the packages were delivered in the beginning of the movie. Also, the female in the movie was not Holly Hunter, it was Helen Hunt!
35:38 When he picks up the giant crab leg I was thinking not only is it a bunch of seafood but he seemed to be off put by how its plentiful, easy to get and how we take food as well as the ability to create fire in an instant for granted.
When I saw the movie, my impression was that he took the same road that she took and that he MAY have gone back to her home. I'd have to watch again to see if I was right.
I am 100% okay with someone not using their precious energy to bury me in this situation. If I'm dead then so be it, let my remains be of use to you with whatever resources you want and then move on. Just don't, like, go out of your way to desecrate my remains for some reason lol.
For the island footage (most of the movie), every line of dialog was looped and every single sound was created in studio by a foley artist. This is because the actual sound of lapping waves was overpoweringly loud.
On the original DVD release, there was an easter egg hidden in one of the menus. If you pushed the right set of directional buttons on the remote an audio clip would appear which had the screenwriter at a Q&A where he said what was in the FedEx box with wings. He jokingly stated that it was a water-proof soler-powered satellite cellphone.
Fun fact: the filming location of the Castaway, Monuriki Island. is part of Fiji, several miles west of the main island. For the past 10+ years it has been owned by the CBS production team, and used as one of the tribal camp islands in Survivor. So, if you watch Survivor, you may recognize some of the island scenery from this film.
As always- another wonderful, fun flick ride along. Thank You! I’ve always felt the end was about the crossroads of life, literally & symbolically. He doesn’t open that box. The wings are like a magnet for him. He then leaves the note- This saved my life. Then he unknowingly runs into her, not seeing the wings until she pulls away. While it’s left to the viewer to interpret, I’ve always felt those wings were still a magnet. Remember- as you so rightly pointed out- she too was now minus ‘a half’, a partner. My Mom used to always say ‘What’s meant for you will not pass you by.’ Also ‘One never knows how strong they are until it’s the only choice they have.’ I see both in the ending🥰 But again- there’s a certain genius (& beauty even) in the viewer also being left in that very crossroad! Lari White was a successful country music artist at the time of Cast Away. Sadly, she passed away about 4yrs ago at the age of 52 from cancer. Real wings now… She has a song ‘Stepping Stone’ that’s always worth a listen😊 Appreciate you & your open/honest reactions, sir! Stay safe & love much💖
About the Jeep......I had a 98 Jeep and put almost 300 thousand miles on it....Never lost a drop of oil between oil changes....Super easy to work on..... Gave it to a grandson..... (Of course it didn't last two months after that.)
I find this movie endlessly rewatchable. Something about films with someone having to fend for themselves. Same with The Martian. If you haven’t seen that, put it on the list.
This is a hard movie to be reacted to. It's very quiet and cerebral. Much like 2001: a space odyssey. Also, the contents of the package is a satellite phone, GPS locator, fishing rod, water purifier, and some seeds.
Notice that Zemeckis doesn't use any music for the first part of the movie. It makes Noland's isolation and loneliness much more poignant. And when it finally sets in when he leaves the island it hits you like a ton of bricks. Masterfully done.
There's a movie called "Swiss Army Man", that stars Daniel Radcliff(Harry Potter) with a similar plot as this. Except Radcliff plays a man marooned on an island and finds a corpse and learns to use the deceased as an all purpose tool to help him survive. And he also uses him for companionship as he hears the man talking after being alone for awhile. It sounds insanely morbid, but it's actually quite endearing.
The director joked that the package has a waterproof, solar-powered, satellite phone. Another really good similar movie is All is Lost with Robert Redford.
This was the first movie i watched after my marriage began dissolving, some things you cant go back to... and must choose to live life the best way you can. Thank you Tom Hanks for getting me though one of the roughest times in my life.
I believe the lady at the end with the missing half name on the sign, was the ex wife of the Cowboy guy with a mistress getting a package from his wife in the beginning. It makes sense haha
The package had divorce papers. The woman in Texas sent them to the man seen in the first scene in Russia. He says to the lady something like “it’s from my wife”. This also explains the missing name on the sign in Texas at the end of the movie. They are no longer married so his name is removed
That's what I thought, too; the husband signed them, re-sealed the box and sent it back. But there are what look like legal papers that Hanks is flipping through on the beach, so I wonder.
great reaction. this little jem was directed by Robert Zemeckis, director of the beloved Back to the Future trilogy and Roger Rabbit. During the few months that Tom Hanks took to loose the weight, production of the film went on hiatus. Zemeckis used that time to make a another little hidden jem called "What Lies Beneath" I highly recommend you give that a look during spooky season. You can even make it a double-feature if you include "Death Becomes Her" I think you'll enjoy it. Thanks!
This actress' name was Helen Hunt. She's in a notable James Brooks movie called As Good As It Gets which co-starred Jack Nicholson, among other films, plus she was the co-star of a popular TV sitcom for many years. Holly Hunter is an altogether different actress who was in the notable James Brooks movie Broadcast News which featured Jack Nicholson, as well as co-starring in many other popular movies over the years.
Very interesting story behind this movie...You would imagine they'd film the two halves of the movie in reverse, where Hanks would have the time to get fit prior to the start of filming, and do the later half first, then he could eat all he wanted to prepare to film the first part. Logically, getting out of shape would take a lot less time. Hanks didn't want to do that. He wanted to film it in sequential order, as it is written..The director, Robert Zemeckis (who also directed Hanks in Forrest Gump) was in a bit of a quandary. What was he to do with the crew, after filming the first have, while waiting for Hanks to get fit to film the rest of the movie?..What he did was sign on to film another movie "What Lies Beneath" w/ Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer for a year, enabling him to keep the same crew working, right into filming the last half of this film..From what I understand that's never been done before.
Winds up like Gilligan's Island. They were what, 50 mi from Honolulu the whole time. It's always said that the one he didn't open probably would have saved his life got him off the island
Kelly talking about the Super Bowl ‘we were 1 yard away!!’ - lots of chuckles in St. Louis movie theaters (the, ahem, THEN St. Louis Rams were the ones to hold them to that one yard that won the game for the Rams.)
I wish they made more cars with the straight six engine. I had an old Dodge Polara with a Chrysler Slant Six engine. It ran forever, and all you had to do was change the oil. Never broke down. I never should've gotten rid of it.
The relationship with Wilson proves that humans were not created to be alone. Companionship is necessary. ..he could have gone quite "mental" without Wilson. Gr8 reaction.
A little behind the scenes tidbit of information: During filming the crew took several months off inorder for Tom Hanks to grow the Beard &hair, lose the weight and get tanned...
If you remember the man at the beginning of the movie with the lady hanging off of him stated, "its from my wife"; The box that was delivered to the man had wings on it, the lady at the end of the movie had wings on the back of her truck, the gate to ranch had wings on it and a name was removed from atop the arches. Tom Hanks delivered the box with wings on it, it was the divorce papers that the lady sent to her cheating husband to be signed and returned to her.
I’m sure someone has already said it in the comments, but I’ve always heard it joked that the box he didn’t open contained a waterproof satellite phone. How ironic would that be 😂 Edit: then you said it 😂
I think the significance of the box he didn't open that had wings in it was a representation of a sign to have faith by not opening it was a sign for hope so if he can attempt to survive and strategize his way to survival of the fittest you will be rewarded in abundance when he makes it out alive also why he didn't hang himself on top of that Island so it probably didn't matter what was really inside that box probably just a bunch of paperwork from that girl having a divorce because like you said her sign in front of her house had two names on it she took it out when she left that guy so she's a single girl now so it was probably meant to be I assume he did go back to talk to that girl.
Agree that package was part of his old life before he came to island. We are showed with great pride he took a bike from a crippled kid to deliver a package. It was his hope to one day he could go back home to his old life, and delivering that package was a sign of it by not opening it.
greetings and love from Germany again....well, like you said at the beginnig of the movie...he is very passionate at work and he takes his job very seriously......so i thought it was quite loyal and honorable of him not to open these packages. Cause here in Germany, and in a few other european countries, we have that so called ´Postal Secrecy´. The principle of letter/packages secrecy guarantees that only you as the recipient are entitled to read what is in your letter. What is inside an envelope concerns nobody but the person to whom the letter is addressed. Anyone who without your knowledge and consent removes, opens and reads your mail - perhaps even from your letter box - is committing a criminal offence, whether it’s an invitation from your girlfriend to an upcoming jazz concert or your brother’s birthday greetings. This also applies to parents, who are expected to respect the secrecy of their children’s letters. There is, however, an exception to this rule: if parents suspect that their child has problems or is in trouble, they may open the letters. After all, they do have a parental duty of care. But now i have heard that in the United States, there is no specific constitutional guarantee on the privacy of correspondence. If thats true i understand your point of view to open those packages imidently. I probably would do the same....however, great reaction as always....oh, btw..did i miss the comment thing, that you had running...what was it.? 1000 dollars i think, right...who was the lucky winner.? ahhh, doesn´t really matters......for sure it wasnt me.....i never win anything, me poor 🤣🤣....PEACE & stay safe, my friend
It's funny you mentioned a satellite radio possibly being in the package. I think it was the director that joked about the package containing exactly that when asked.
I love reaction videos for multiple reasons, but sometimes it's for movies like this that I haven't seen in ages but do remember everything that happened so don't really want to watch it again. Get kind of a condensed, Reader's Digest version...so thanks for all your reactions!!
I recommend you watch how they made this film. Hanks has said it’s one of the best memories and most fun experiences of making a movie because he got to do it with his family close by
I'm a first time watcher of your channel. I just watched your reaction to Good Morning Vietnam and I have to say I love your laugh. Its very infectious. Probably not going to get to many laughs on the movie. I'll have to see your playlist.
There's a lot of good Tom Hanks movies but a really great one that not of people react to is "Captain Phillips." A true story of Somoli pirates hijacking a tanker ship and Hanks plays the captain of the ship.
I'm very observant on some things. I've picked up on lots of little things people who seen three movies 10 times hasn't picked up on. There is like 30 movies with comments like this one. Some people loved/hated my sixth sense reaction. I remember I did the same type thing on Ghostbusters.
Larry Crowne is another Hanks flick I really enjoy. Nothing fancy, just Tom Hanks and fellow Oscar winner Julia Roberts in a fun rom-com. There’s just a sense of security in it for me. It came out at a time in my life when I needed a little hope and inspiration to get back on track. It’s perfect imo
One of Tom’s best!!!!! What an amazing actor! It was funny how he was sorting the packages 😂 I love Wilson! Humans are innately social. We have to communicate!!!
Anybody know if Tom Hanks actually "made fire"? Did he manage to start it primitively himself, without technicians making the debris more flammable or something?
During all aircraft malfunctions the co pilot reads from the Quick reference handbook and the pilot follows those procedures. The fact that both just randomly hit buttons is Hollywood pure fiction.
The box & the Dick/Bettina ranch at the beginning. It took me 2-3 watches of the movie to put it together. The "wings" package was delivered to Dick in Russia. I am certain it was divorce papers, because Dick's name was removed from the ranch sign at the end. It was Bettina that Chuck meet on the road at the end. I like to think that Chuck & Bettina ended up together. What was in the package? Signed (by Dick) divorce papers.

It didn’t matter what was IN the package, it was the fact that he needed to make sure it was delivered! You saw his passion for making sure the packages were delivered in the beginning of the movie. Also, the female in the movie was not Holly Hunter, it was Helen Hunt!
Spoiler. It was divorce papers in the winged package.
35:38 When he picks up the giant crab leg I was thinking not only is it a bunch of seafood but he seemed to be off put by how its plentiful, easy to get and how we take food as well as the ability to create fire in an instant for granted.
good point
One of the greatest commercial's I've ever seen, was him returning the one package he didn't open and it was a satellite phone
Ahaha! "We don't find out what's in the package? Ah, crap!" 😆
As a FedEx driver, I can say I’d open every single box without a second thought.
Yup
Two great movies with Tom Hanks that are often overlooked:
The Money Pit (1986)
The Burbs (1989)
Both comedies.
Added to list thanks
The true story of this event is truly austounding
Real wings now… She has a song ‘Stepping Stone’ that’s always worth a listen😊
Appreciate you & your open/honest reactions, sir!
Stay safe & love much💖
So Excited for this, you are going to LOVE It❤️ If you haven't seen Turner and Hooch would love to see you react to it...
About the Jeep......I had a 98 Jeep and put almost 300 thousand miles on it....Never lost a drop of oil between oil changes....Super easy to work on..... Gave it to a grandson..... (Of course it didn't last two months after that.)
Oh that's sucks, grandson killed it in two months. Love those Jeeps
Masterfully done.
wow, very good point. love it
WILSON!!!!
I'M SORRY, WILSON!!
I'm not afraid of flying. I'm afraid of crashing.
The ship that rescued him, he went on to work on it as Capt Williams.
H crying for Wilson broke my heart ❤️. So surprised I allowed it to affect me the way it did
The director joked that the package has a waterproof, solar-powered, satellite phone.
Another really good similar movie is All is Lost with Robert Redford.
This was the first movie i watched after my marriage began dissolving, some things you cant go back to... and must choose to live life the best way you can. Thank you Tom Hanks for getting me though one of the roughest times in my life.
I was in a park in the Florida keys a few years ago and heard that coconut falling noise a lot, like every few minutes.
I believe the lady at the end with the missing half name on the sign, was the ex wife of the Cowboy guy with a mistress getting a package from his wife in the beginning. It makes sense haha
I like the fact that most people, myself included get invested in a volleyball named Wilson especially when he lost as sea.
Very much so
The package had divorce papers. The woman in Texas sent them to the man seen in the first scene in Russia. He says to the lady something like “it’s from my wife”. This also explains the missing name on the sign in Texas at the end of the movie. They are no longer married so his name is removed
ah!
That's what I thought, too; the husband signed them, re-sealed the box and sent it back. But there are what look like legal papers that Hanks is flipping through on the beach, so I wonder.
The last unopened package had a satellite phone, using which he would have been rescued sooner.
Hahaha a TV Spot show that 🤣
great reaction. this little jem was directed by Robert Zemeckis, director of the beloved Back to the Future trilogy and Roger Rabbit. Thanks!
Fun reaction, you seemed to really get into his survival.
Saw this in the theaters, I remember saying "Are you serious?" out loud when the 4 years later came up. Amazing they still somehow made it work!
34:14.
If the package contained a book on outdoor survival, that would have been hilarious.
Only Tom Hanks could make me care about a damn volleyball lol. Can’t imagine anyone else pulling off this role. He’s basically a one-man show.
Besides Tom Hanks' outstanding performance, this film is also packed with lessons and inspiration for survival. Definitely one of my favorites!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great movie and great reaction. Tom actually got I'll from the island that he was hospitalized for quite awhile
Love it pal. Big shoutout from Scotland 🏴
100% agree, thanks
Tom is one of the greatest actors of the past 35+ years.
Chris Noth (rhymes with "both") became known in the Law & Order original series. Since then he starred in The Good Wife and Sex in the City. FYI...
Wilson is iconic 😅You can’t go wrong with. Tom Hanks movie
A little behind the scenes tidbit of information: During filming the crew took several months off inorder for Tom Hanks to grow the Beard &hair, lose the weight and get tanned...
According to one interview with the director, there was a satellite phone in that last package with the wings.
It was the divorce papers... That makes sense.
The 2 scenes I always look away from: When he cuts his leg on the coral and when he knocks out his tooth with the ice skate and rock!
I’m sure someone has already said it in the comments, but I’ve always heard it joked that the box he didn’t open contained a waterproof satellite phone. How ironic would that be 😂
Edit: then you said it 😂
I think the significance of the box he didn't open that had wings in it was a representation of a sign to have faith by not opening it was a sign for hope so if he can attempt to survive and strategize his way to survival of the fittest you will be rewarded in abundance when he makes it out alive also why he didn't hang himself on top of that Island so it probably didn't matter what was really inside that box probably just a bunch of paperwork from that girl having a divorce because like you said her sign in front of her house had two names on it she took it out when she left that guy so she's a single girl now so it was probably meant to be I assume he did go back to talk to that girl.
Agree that package was part of his old life before he came to island. We are showed with great pride he took a bike from a crippled kid to deliver a package. It was his hope to one day he could go back home to his old life, and delivering that package was a sign of it by not opening it.
The director jokingly said that in the package was a pack of matches and a satellite phone which do exist..
greetings and love from Germany again....well, like you said at the beginnig of the movie...he is very passionate at work and he takes his job very seriously......so i thought it was quite loyal and honorable of him not to open these packages.
After this movie was released so many folks joked about what was in the package. Haha. Glad you enjoyed it
For some reason, I didn't care for this movie the first time I watched it. The second time, I loved it.
It's funny you mentioned a satellite radio possibly being in the package. I think it was the director that joked about the package containing exactly that when asked.
James: I deliver for FedEx out of Grimes. I think of this movie every time I'm out in the truck. Nice job, neighbor.
Thank you for what you do
The joke is that the unopened package had a solar powered satellite phone that could have gotten him rescued if he used it! LOL
Hanks has said it’s one of the best memories and most fun experiences of making a movie because he got to do it with his family close by
This movie is amazing. Fun fact there was a long pause in production so the Tom Hanks could grow out his beard
I'm a first time watcher of your channel. I just watched your reaction to Good Morning Vietnam and I have to say I love your laugh. Its very infectious. Probably not going to get to many laughs on the movie. I'll have to see your playlist.
Thanks for checking out my channel. My comedy playlist if very popular. Lots of laughs to enjoy:

There's a lot of good Tom Hanks movies but a really great one that not of people react to is "Captain Phillips." A true story of Somoli pirates hijacking a tanker ship and Hanks plays the captain of the ship.
You are the first person I have seen to notice the island is bird free. I have seen this movie a hundred times and never noticed that.
It was funny how he was sorting the packages 😂
I love Wilson! Humans are innately social. We have to communicate!!!
I saw this in theatres with my entire family on my 13th birthday. Lol that plane crash scene was pretty intense on the big screen.
Helen Hunt, is her name
Anybody know if Tom Hanks actually "made fire"? Did he manage to start it primitively himself, without technicians making the debris more flammable or something?
During all aircraft malfunctions the co pilot reads from the Quick reference handbook and the pilot follows those procedures. The fact that both just randomly hit buttons is Hollywood pure fiction.
agreed
I always hoped that he ended up with the 'Wing' lady. She sees the package so turns back and he's still standing at the crossroads 🥰
Same
I think this movie is genius! It's so good, it had me captivated from the beginning to end!💞
Love this movie. Life of Pi is another similar and great one, except the guy gets stranded with a tiger! Very cool
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Like you said..the sign was half gone on the ranch...possibly a new sign in the package? Just my thought.
I guess the package had her divorce papers
There was a satellite phone in the package, and a lighter 😂
25:38 This is the best shot of the film. There were audible gasps when I saw the movie in the cinema. Perfect.
Surprised the crap out of me.
