This is probably the most under rated lesson ever on youtube. Guys, if u swing the club into the punching bag, it will IMPROVE your ball striking 10000 percents! If you lead with the handle as Gary suggested, you will definitely IMPROVED! If you don' do anything else this year, just follow this video. Experiment with it. See for yourself. He is CORRECT in everything about the swing. Ball striking feels exactly like that sensation when u hit the bag.
Thank you so much for this drill. For the last week or so I’m been searching and studying impact drills and so far yours is the best. You’ve covered aspect on this whole process that I can relate too. Again, great/wonderful lesson.
This is a great video. A lot of high handicappers think they need to swing harder to hit it further and thats not how you get more distance. Its all about generating club head speed before impact. Club head speed is generated from when the head is at your knee to the ball. The name for that is a lag. The next thing needed for distance is good contact. You're not going to get the most distance if you're hitting off the toe, heel or sole.
Best golf fundamentals explanation I have ever seen. You are a very gifted teacher. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Really filled in some blanks for me. Gia
These videos have helped me SO MUCH!! Everyone is impressed with how much my game has improved! Thank you so very much for making it simple and easy to follow. I struggle with my driver so much but my fairway game is so much better!
I recently learned how to do this. I lagged the club well coming down to waist high but would still flip at impact. Learning this is tough because of how subtle it is, but if you keep your wrists loose and allow the inertia of the club head to hinge your wrists, you can get the bowed or flat left wrist at impact much more easily. The impact bag is invaluable.
Very good and concise instuction. I have an impact bag but haven't been using it. Now with these drills I now know how to properly use this tool to help my swing. Thanks for the videos, just subed, looking forward to watching other vids you have posted.
Thank you for the question. Power is achieved via the usage of the arms and body together. Both have a role. This video addresses how to use your arms and body to train a position and to provide drills for this position. Ultimately, the body must be used correctly, which is given in the free ebook at the samuraigolfswing website.
Great simple to follow pointed out several mistakes I have been making that have really impacted distance . I do have an impact bag I beat the living ------ out of it never used it correctly . Thanks great job from Never to old to learn ! Jim t
Really really good explanation. A lot of instructors talk about spinning the hips open while shifting your weight forward and they have me all screwed up. Can you explain from impact to follow through? I seem to get stuck at impact and don't follow through.
Thank you, Cordell. Since some of these other explanations, have you confused, I suggest you take a different and more conceptual/simple approach. Just get yourself to a PGA Tour type finish where you feel you're copying a tour pro. Your hands will be positioned over your left bicep. Getting yourself here will help you perform simply.
Im a beginner golfer and your information is so clear to me..In Florida now, about to go to ChampionGate with a friend to play will use you information on course
My right arm is not locked or stiff purposely. I don't have a lot of wrist hinge in my short game swing or in my full swing; most people hinge more. However, the wrists hold lag well in downswing
Gary, that was one of the most constructive instructions on the subject I've seen so far! As you well know, there is a lot of contradictions on style teachings and methods flying in the air, something very confusing at times, especially for the very average player like I am! And as you probably know, statements like this is or that is a "nonsense" is being heard a lot in a reference to another "approach"! Oh, well, this is probably something to be expected and not unusual!
Adam- Thank you. Teaching golf on the internet is challenging because there are no absolutes and because personal feel can oppose what is really happening. Live instruction provides room for personal touch and is usually better. However, there are a lot of good thoughts both here and otherwise, you just have to filter through all the videos to find them!
Gary...any thoughts on starting the downswing with a quick snap of the left knee forcefully forward and downwards ??...I'm trying to incorporate this move into my swing. Getting some pretty good results at the range but the coordination still needs to be grooved for consistency.
How do you explain Dustin Johnson, Rory, Justin Thomas, David Duval, Henrik Stenson just to name a few of many 100s of golfers who all have their torso and hips WIDE OPEN at impact? There are so many golfers who are completely OPEN to the target at impact and they're evidently very long hitters of the ball and are great players.
Those players use the large muscles to wind and then unwind the body. Their hands and arms are passive. Their lower body starts the downswing and everything else follows. A player who uses his arms and hands mostly for power instead of the body doesn't have/need the huge hip thrust so his hips are not as wide open. It's "pivot controlled hands" vs "Hands controlled pivot". Study Jim Hardy's 1 and 2 plane swing . He talks about how a 1 planer winds his body and how that is poison for a 2 planer because a 2 planer gets his power not from winding and unwinding put from his hands and arms pulling the club down. He calls it "Karate chopping" .
Kenneth- Please try one of two things to compliment this: 1) Try swinging the grip/handle of the golf club lore to the left. It will feel like you are pulling the handle toward the third base line. The more you swing left, the more the ball spins to the right 2) It may also help to aim your shoulders and even your feel more left at address. It's possible you are aligned too much to the right which can promote a hook (sometimes). The golf ball spins the opposite of your downswing direction.
wesbilly- please be more descriptive. What does "locked" mean? When in the swing are you asking about? Thank you in advance for any clarity you can provide so I may better answer your question.
Sharul, Thank you for your question. The answer depends on your personal feel. If the left hand is pulling down, it will feel straight down as if your pulling down a European flush; if your right hand is your sense, it will usually feel like the palm is facing down to the ground so the face is not open. My concern with pushing with the right hand is that it may lead to hands too far ahead. The palm down keeps face more square (less open) in downswing and eliminates too much shaft lean.
Garyocchinogolf.com I’m a little confused. In this video you have your knees square as the club reaches impact but in many of your other videos such as the Footwhip you are shifting the knees hard forward.. Can you please clarify? Thanks Chuck
There are slightly different impact conditions depending upon the individual. For the purposes of this thread, Yes, the driver shaft and hands are slightly forward at impact. Be careful, because getting them too forward will rob you of power and strike. The term becoming popular for having hands too forward is "handle dragging."
M Pearmon- Thank you for both compliments. Glad you like the videos and play well. There's more detailed information and products on the websites. Have fun playing.
This is a great explanation of the moment of impact and the way it is to be studied. I've added this to my playlist and I'm really grateful!!! Thanks a lot

Wonderful clip. I was not doing this exactly right so this really helped me. I'm a +5 player that has lost distance and now I see why.
Hands down first will promote over the top move.

Any chance of a video of you just hitting a few shots. I really like your swing
Jacob- Thank you. The paid products on the website attached to this have some swings. Samurai Swing Consistency has a couple for sure.

Your right arm looks very straight in the back swing. Is it locked? Thanks.
wesbilly- please be more descriptive. What does "locked" mean? When in the swing are you asking about? Thank you in advance for any clarity you can provide so I may better answer your question.
Do you do the same thing on all other clubs except putter?
Sweet swing!
When you drop hour hands from the top of your swing, do you pull with left hand or push with your right hand or both. Thank you.
Sharul, Thank you for your question. The answer depends on your personal feel. jancen, let's say this video is for the full swing and all clubs you hit. some of the principles apply to short game but not entirely.

when I tried this way I make big hook to the left. what did I miss?
great info

what happens when you go to far into the divot?
Do you have your front arm locked?
how do you keep from picking up
If the power comes from the body rotation isn't this example all "arms"?
What happens if you try this and it doesn't change anything what dod you think i am doing wrong??
Like this thank you!
Adri- you're very welcome.
