No-one can do an upbeat sad song quite like ABBA. Masterful!
This song was their last international hit and what a song it was..it had everything, heartbreak, melody, beautiful yearning vocals and a narrative that most adults can relate to.
Abba always came up with the goods right up to the very end of their career as an active pop group.

there is much to say about
"One of us" (1981)
1) It is a beautiful song, it has a soft melody and melancholic lyrics that allow Agnetha to shine with a very sweet voice, and a catchy and harmonic chorus
2) was ABBA's last big hit, #1 in several European countries and #3 in the UK (last single Top 10 of their 18 consecutives between 1975/1982)
3) recorded at the end of 1981, the two couples were already separated (Agnetha & Björn almost 3 years ago, Benny & Frida a few months ago)
4) the official video is very good, it shows Agnetha (with a more mature beauty) acting sober and convincing rebuilding a love life from a move
5) In my opinion it is together with "Slipping through my fingers" (It comes soon) the best song from the album "The Visitors" , where the melancholy and rawness of their lyrics is most pronounced in the context of a complex album of musical exploration away from ABBA's signature pop, and an image of the four singles over the two couples
some fans said, with ABBA comeback in 2021, that the new song "Don't shut me down" is a sequence of "One of us" after 40 years

After her participation in Mamma Mia 2, Cher made an entire album with ABBA songs including One of us. She did a really good job because as she said, they're not that easy to sing.

Another surprising but beautiful cover of One of us is that of Tommy Johansson lead vocalist from Sabaton. Tommy did a lot of ABBA covers. Money, money, money for example is absolutely spectacular.
Strange as it may sound but a lot of metalheads like ABBA and there are some really good covers.

This is such an amazing track... it was released as a radio-only single in the US in 1983, two full years after The Visitors... I remember hearing it on the radio thinking they sounded like warm aliens...
You are about to encounter one of the most controversial songs from ABBA's entire catalog. Some even hardcore ultra-fans find Two For The Price Of One a cringing embarrassment. For me, I think it contains some of the most sophisticated background vocal harmonies of any ABBA material, so any cringeworthiness of the track is immediately offset.
I luv this one too Delius.I am also compassionate to the story of the bitter lyrics in the demo where Bjorn sings some diiferent words more harsh and pictured devastated.
I agree 💯 I always thought “Two For The Price Of One” was super catchy and the vocals and harmonies are addicting. I even enjoy the marching band outro.
Hey Matt, hope you're doing better and that life is slowly starting to smile on you again. It always does, so just be patient. Today, I wanted to share a bit of my experience with this group whose music has been a part of key moments in my life and has contributed to shaping the person I am today, or at least the music has always been the background in this process. I discovered ABBA when I was only 9 years old. They weren't a very well-known band in Latin America, and in fact, despite having been in the music industry for a few years, the first song of theirs that I came across and that marked their strong entry into Latin America was "Chiquitita". For me, it was magical to hear that introduction with acoustic guitar and piano, and when it played on the radio, which was very frequent, my mom said that I would stop whatever I was doing to run to where the radio was and I would be mesmerized listening to the song. That's where my love for ABBA was born. Then, when I was just starting to get to know them, came the separation and the subsequent decline in their popularity. But that little seed of interest in knowing what other songs the creators of "Chiquitita" had stayed with me, and every time I heard it, I wanted more and more to keep searching and delving into their music. What did I like about ABBA? Well, without a doubt, the voices of the girls. I think few current and past singers can unfold their feelings and transmit those emotions as Agnetha and Anni-Frid did. The production - what makes ABBA's music special are the different instruments they use, the number of voices and harmonies they employ, all of them sung by the two girls, something that amazes me considering the time they must have spent on each song. "The Visitors" is the album where that brilliance, that feeling of optimism and positivity, is put aside to experiment with new forms and sounds that reflect a maturity and a reflection of what the members were experiencing at the time of recording the album. All the songs on this album are sad or have a hint of nostalgia in part or in their entire structure. It's ABBA with a new dimension, full of interesting sounds but framed in themes of greater maturity, less positivity, and brilliance, which were perhaps the characteristics that made them successful at the time. It's not a bad album, in fact, all the songs seem good to me, even better than many that reached popular favor. However, the joy, the spark that characterized ABBA was already beginning to fade on this album. That's my sincere opinion.
btw since you refered to ''subsequent decline" i just wanna spot from a European's point of view that it was only just from very late '81 till '82 that they split.About the last year and after Benny's Frida's seperation.'One of Us" was their last real big hit.'Chiquitita" is still an hymn down there after all these decades isn't it?

Yes 'Don't shut me down' became like the happy - ending sequel to this beautiful but 'devastating' prequel..
It’s such a beautiful song, one of their very best. It was also their last widespread big hit until 2021. By which time, the charts are so differently compiled. It was never planned to be the lead single for the album, Benny and Björn weren’t that keen, but the record companies loved it.
Björn was keen, Gareth. It's actually one of his favourite songs. It was Benny and Stig who weren't sure of its hit potential! 😀
@@visitor1982 Yes i also read that Benny was unsure about it.But he shouldn't be.Record company insisted on it and things finally worked fine with OOU as a lead release.
I think When All is Said and Done is a better single but I don’t hate this song.
Great to see you again reacting to Abba, at the time this came out, as the first single on off the album, I was not really into it, liked Head Over Heels more, was 11 years old then, now I love both and the whole album. I felt like I grew with Abba to this time. As some people pointed out that this album did not appeal to them. I and my friends at the time loved it. The memories of that time coming back, the album topped the charts, and this song reached no. 4 in SA.
SA was a fine succesful field for Abba records almost from the start.
With regards to bonus tracks for the album, I hope you’ve got or will be able to get access to ‘from a twinkling star to a passing angel’. Released on the 2012 deluxe version and is a 9 minute demo medley. You really get an idea how ABBA worked on a song, from an original demo with dummy lyrics to trying out different lyrics and musical styles.

Great song. Love the drumming on this one. Theme wise it's basically the woman wanting out of the relationship, feeling stifled, but when she ups and walks away she realises she's made the wrong decision and is now left to pine over what she threw away. A similar theme is revisited on the Voyage album, with the song Don't Shut Me Down. Rumour has it that it both songs are rather autobiographical in that Agnetha wanted out but was rather hurt when Bjorn soon picked up life after the divorce and got married again, leaving her unable to right her wrongs.
I love the use of mandolin on this song. Listening now, the beat sounds like a rap. This could be easily sampled today. I don't know what Bjorn had on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. Was he thinking that Agnetha had second thoughts about their divorce and that she's feeling "sorry for herself feeling stupid, feeling small, wishing she had never left at all"
And then came the happy ending and her returning with "Don't Shut me down"(2021)eh?
Don't Shut Me Down...yes!!! It does sound like a sequel to One Of Us. Can't wait til Matt reacts. I had tears in my eyes when I first heard Don't Shut Me Down especially when the girls started singing together in the chorus part. Sounds so familiar.
This is a classic ABBA song - catcy and wellproduced, sad and melancolic, and with Agnethas beautiful and flawless leadvocal! And as others have mentioned - it was ABBA´s last major single hit on the charts - untill 2021!
The next song on the album is...........I don´t know what to say about that? One of the few ABBA songs I do not like very much! But I am curious to hear what you think about it, Matt!
The opening strings suggest a melancholy Italian folk tune, then it changes gears suddenly with the reggae influenced first verse. Yet another sad Abba song you can dance to.
This was their last top 3 hit in the UK and I remember Bjorn saying it could have been their 10th number 1 if a chart had been published over the Christmas period. It does have some echoes of Fernando in the way it fades in at the start.
The music sounds a bit like a slow reggae track. But then it has Agnetha's heavily emotive vocal, and some folky type bits. All presented as a typical ballad
I think its a simple "One of us" meaning "I am". We broke-up but now one of us (me) regret it.

In Sweden we say this when you are doing nothing. And is bored. So Björn just translated this in to english

Italian accapela
One Of Us is one of their more forward straight pop songs that worked. I think the Mandolin overdub helped it greatly to even out Benny's plonky bass accompaniment.
Not a lot more to say about it. A good track but not one of their great tracks.
I dread the next track to come,Two For The Price Of One, which I dislike the most from the album. Total shlock.
I don't see why you hate or dislike Two for the price of one. The song is a comic relief. Knowing how sentimental and dark the Visitors Album songs are, ABBA did well to throw in a song which makes an-attempt-at-comedy to relax the theme of the album. The beauty of Two for the price of one is in the lyrics and not the music.
The plonky bass is Rutger Gunnarsson on his Jazz bass (or the Hagström Super Swede!).
