The Crown Season 3 Episode 6- "For within the hollow crown"

  • Prince Charles reciting Shakespeares' "Richard II"
    For within the hollow crown
    That rounds the mortal temples of a king
    Keeps Death his court and there the antic sits,
    Scoffing his state and grinning at his pomp,
    Allowing him a breath, a little scene,
    To monarchize, be fear'd and kill with looks,
    Infusing him with self and vain conceit,
    As if this flesh which walls about our life,
    Were brass impregnable, and humour'd thus
    Comes at the last and with a little pin
    Bores through his castle wall, and farewell king!
    Cover your heads and mock not flesh and blood
    With solemn reverence: throw away respect,
    Tradition, form and ceremonious duty,
    For you have but mistook me all this while:
    I live with bread like you, feel want,
    Taste grief, need friends: subjected thus,
    How can you say to me, I am a king?

      @@Wanderer628 I don't find that true. Society is way tougher on women than men. If a women cheats she is a whore, disgrace, etc. While a man might be a piece of shit but if he comes from money than its not that big of a deal and can be easily forgotten. In Diana's case, I believe the already preformed notions and media built image played a big role. Charles was never shown in a good light unlike Diana. He was always characterized as a potential cheat, unmanly, emotionally constipated. If anything came out in public later, people easily just justified it by saying that he and his behaviour to a young maiden drove her to do that. Which might have been true in the beginning. But Diana was a manipulative and smart woman who continued to play and propel the stereotype.

    • @mscott3918
      @mscott3918 4 роки тому +24

      There always has been. He hasn't changed, public perception of him has. Diana was just better at PR than the royal family. Unfortunately she was nowhere near as nice as some people persist in believing. It's all in the Royal Archive. Maybe in 100 years it will be released. Prince Charles said that he is happy for history to be his judge. I suspect it will be less prejudiced than some people in the present.

    How to start describing how perfect and sad this scene is? Josh O'Connor is sublime and insurmountable, he manages to connect you with the figure of Prince Charles, even if you never sympathized with him, you manage to feel each and every one of his insecurities and deficiencies. Like the rest of the cast, it's perfect, but here he shines by himself and he goes beyond that, I hope his career continues like this.

      Richard II was forced to abdicate as he believed in absolute monarchy. Far from being weak he overplayed the role of King and paid for it with his life. The tragedy of Richard II is mirrored here in a rather ironic way in the early life of Prince Charles.

      I’m not sure if this is what you're asking but he’s reciting a portion of Shakespeare’s play “Richard II”

      Mine ear is open and my heart prepared;
      The worst is worldly loss thou canst unfold.
      Say, is my kingdom lost? why, ’twas my care
      And what loss is it to be rid of care?
      --
      Your cares set up do not pluck my cares down.
      My care is loss of care, by old care done;
      Your care is gain of care, by new care won:
      The cares I give I have, though given away;
      They tend the crown, yet still with me they stay.

      Having just received a brutal wake up call to his true role in life, Charles was reciting these lines from Shakespeare not only as an actor on stage, but from his own very soul. His sister realized that, which is why she suddenly sits up in her seat.
      The verse talks about how the outward appearance of a king is just an illusion, or a show. Underneath the crown is a mere mortal, who is a captive of his crown.

    If Charles III can make Richard II look like a good king, hopefully he will be a good king
