Land Rover Discovery 5 - self parallel parking "Park Assist" tested

- In this video we test out the "park assist" function of the Land Rover Discovery 5. As ever this is not a proffessional tutorial - its just us using the system for the first time to see how easy it is to use. Easy of use is pretty good - but it did park us a little in the middle of the road.... hoping to do better than the computer i have a go... and end up with much the same result !

Needs a curb to work with. It won’t put it right up against the curb though, to protect wheels. You will stick out a little more than cars that scrub their wheels. I use it all the time on my Evoque in the city and it works a treat.
I've used Ford's version and it managed a really tight space, like, I would have struggled a little to do it myself, I was impressed. Try doing this again, but against a curb, not a barrier. It may be taking in to account that you're against something so the doors won't be able to open
Hi 👋 This is good van for load and towing because is loaded with new technology advanced features also 4x4 also comfort for drivers as well. I liked it.
Thanks 🙏
Great video Simon and George , wish I have this on my discovery 4 . Thanks mark
I wonder if it was picking up the shadow of the Armco on the floor, thinking that was the kerb...
i think it was a combination of the tight space and armco... we did another video today.... will be uploaded later...
I had a 2017 Hyundai Tucson and it would park perfectly with the assist. Way better than I could 😂
I was given a commercial when my Defender went in to have some issues resolved. I didn't know that they existed. I am not sure what purpose they serve as you pointed out earlier that they are more expensive than the private version. As you said it must be for tax purposes. Can the plastic window covers be removed?
Would the park assist be picking up the barrier to enable passengers exit?
it's probaly allowing for the passenger door to be opened on park assist
Was going to say the same thing definitely looked like it was leaving room for the door to be opened enough so you can get out. 👍🏻
That actually makes sense. Might be worth trying it again with a proper curb and sidewalk to see if it can do better.
I will try again tomorrow on the road !
I had this system on my DS (HSE Lux so standard). I tried it once at it took over a minute to reverse right angle park rather than the 10 secs it would have taken me manually and never used again.
My current E Class Mercedes has it (again standard UK spec but personally wouldn't have chosen it) and in 18 months of ownership I have never tried it - who pays for my kurbed alloys if the "computer" gets it wrong?
Could do a video on the possibility of how you would put the seats and windows back- I know no one would but just how you might
It is not in alignment with the other two cars but otherwise a good park. There is a protruding structure further behind which means it is not really sticking out in the road as such.
I think the steering lock isn’t sharp enough for it to park any better. A gap 3 feet longer and it might have done better or, was it allowing for the passenger door to open maybe?
I reckon it's the armco barrier that won't let it get too close. Try it again with the same space but against a kerbside instead. (Just gone past Grange and THE STIG is parked along the front).
Thanks for keeping an eye on "The Stig" for me ! I tried using the remote app to flash the lights and sound the tone warning earlier.... not sure why !
Hello, very good video. Love the sticker at the back looks great. My son has park assist in his Merc, its really good don't know if it's better than the Discovery 5, might be but what I wanted to say was it scares me to bits. I'm nearly 60 so I can't use this new stuff. I park the old fashioned way. What happens when this technology breaks down, can people park? Just an old man gripping. Keep the vid6coming.
What use is the Union Jack on a car built car in Slovakia by an Indian (TATA) owned company?
Thought I'd tune in to check out the Defender see how its going? Is it still in garage?
I collect it this morning.... lets see if they have fixed it ...but its a tricky thing to fix as they happen randomly !
What a palaver that Park Assist is? Although it is a very tight space!
The Union Jack definitely improves the look of the hatch.

For me couldn’t be bothered with the park assist, could do it quicker and better, but for people who have an issue with parking can see the benefits.
I think u need to get parallel closer to the car so it can park nicer. However, the system not always do the job. I got that option for my rrs but not always use.
The manual states "For park assist to search effectively for a space, the park assist system must maintain a distance of 0.5 m to 1.5 m. The distance of 0.5 m to 1.5 m is between the vehicle and the row of parked vehicles or obstacles." ..... I think i was about this distance away
Not bad!

Hey guys, have you any plans to make a replica metal heritage grill for the defender? That will sell like hot cakes you know
Hi - other guys have done this .... I dont want to get into a legal issue with Land Rover.... and to be fair it is Land Rovers design and copyright.
Here is the link..... its a competitor ... so dont buy too much from them !
www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/654554/15219/land_rover_heritage_style_badge
powerfulukltd no sorry not the badge the entire grill, you do the 2015 plastic grill but I prefer the aluminium grill with small squares cut throughout, a German company Calle nakatanenga do a replica, have a look there cool looking, cheers for the reply
I think you need to pull up closer to the cars you’re parking between, or you’ll end up half way in the road
On my Disco4, from 2015, it's missing this feature but i can park without being assisted by any park assistence 😁
How do you do this ? you can use your hands, legs and arms to coordinate the position of your car ? you genius !
@@L663 i'm using also my eyes and my ears ... Shocking, no ? ... 😉🤣
Obviously the Defender is not back yet! Why are they taking so long to fix it?
Its a good question.... just had a call from head office... getting it back tomorrow...but i am not sure whats been fixed... will try and work it out tomorrow...
So only the 2020 Discovery and Ranger Rover Sport SUV's have "Park Assist"...The Defender does NOT...
How much does a daft thing like this add to the price of the car!!
Sir if you need ask the price this car is not for you.... i think is the sales person reply to this !
Thank god i know how to park my car without using all these electronic gadgets.
Wonder how much George gets paid....🤔
Same here with my Volvo XC90, such a faff on, much easier and quicker to park it yourself, imaging holding up traffic that long in a busy road when parking. It must be the most useless tech ever in a car. With 360 camera and front and back parking sensors it just is not required.
Land Rover park assist, that would be bull bars then.
Think the bay was a bit short, needs 1 1/2 car lengths to get in tight to the kerb and possibly more with a LR and their poor turning circle.
Cant say to impressed with parking assist. If I was buying it I would leave park assist off the specs.
the badge on the back is a nice touch even tho they are built in slovakia along with the new defender..such a loss for the country and brand of land rover..sorry but for that reason alone i wouldn't buy one..yes the company is not british owned anymore..but what is..id settle for british built
Believe it or not, the slovakian models are better made. The factory was purpose built for modern car building. Whereas the one in England has all its features retro fitted... and it can be hit and miss
it takes a long time to park
Not impressed - my wife's old Tiguan has park assist and it is a doddle but that space did look a tad tight! Maybe Land Rover could simply fit old Tiguan units!
We did set up a tight space as we wanted to test it... and the car did accept the challenge ! I will try again this morning... with it next to a curb !
@@L663 Bit of a leg pull as I am a Range Rover man without Park Assist!! Great videos - so many thanks.
Give it a break, it’s door space
I'm in two minds. Is this really great or just trying to fill the gap between being a shite driver and being a shite driver!!
I would consider myself to be in the centre of the range... shite driver to shite driver
This is why AI will never succeed, men generally just think they know better
Any parking assist sucks... learn how to drive properly period!
LR’s park assist system is 💩 since it’s been released, not reliable at all.... my wife does a better job....
I need to work out how to do emoji's..... you use of emojis is 5star !
