    Crazy how both Zerg bonjwas got caught cheating. Both Savior and Life were the best Zerg players at the time they got caught match-fixing. It’s sad that with Life we never got to see him play out his whole gaming career.

      It's sad to see such a talent get banned because of matchfixing. He deserved it don't get me wrong, but it's still sad. Reminds me of Swag and IBuyPower matchfixing.

      Match fixing destroys the whole sport. They guy deserved to be in jail, or sued.
      Its not like he made a mistake. he actively chose to conspire to commit fraud.

      Life was the best player (or at least the best Zerg in the world) at the time he got caught matchfixing, but Savior was 3 years separated from the end of his prime years. I remember in Brood War back in early 2010 when the matchfixing scandal was revealed 10 or so players were caught cheating - mostly Zergs and a couple of Terrans. I dont think there were Protoss players involved, which is kinda funny, considering that on the ladder Protoss players are the biggest dirtbags abusers and cheesers :)

      It also brought about the beginning of SC2's downfall in SK. It's sad too because he would have been able to get so much money he didn't really need to fix matches.

    I love this kind of content. When I was in college, starting in 2002, I was obsessed with Brood War, and I had been playing it since about 1996, I believe. I mostly played 1v1 and 3v3 fastest possible map, 3v3 bgh, and use map settings games, and when I found out there was a huge televised Korean scene with like superstars like Boxer, I was like "holy shit, these people know where it's at" because all my friends moved on from starcraft. I eventually started playing low money maps 1v1, and now that's pretty much all I play when I get the chance, but all my friends stopped playing in like 1998, so it has been awesome having the Korean scene there to keep the game going.
    I love learning about the history that I missed, because I only started following the ASL closely in like 2019 or something; before that, all I knew was that Boxer was a big deal.

    I'm 40 years old. Warcraft 2 w/ Kali was the best experience I had with a video game especially having dial up as a means of online play.
    Starcraft 1 came out and honestly, that game was everything Warcraft 2 had but improved EVERYTHING. It didn't feel like I was leaving Warcraft 2 but entering a new world of RTS.
    Starcraft 2 came out and maybe my age had a role in this, but I don't feel like that shift happened. Starcraft 2 was a different game and I think Starcraft 2 is a great game, but its not Starcraft 1 or Warcraft 2. That's where its difficult to keep the same audience imo.
    Btw, I think a Warcraft VS Starcraft RTS would be epic. Nothing to do with what I just said.

    10:30 Matchfixing was not before SC2 was announced. SC2 was announced 2007(maybe 2008). Matchfixing scandal happened 2010, after SC2 beta was out.

    I think what makes it more tragic to me about the whole thing is when you read something like "God of the Battlefield: Part 1" and you just see how amazing Savior was, it just becomes more tragic. That one of the best Zerg players of all time is forever clouded in scandal. The closest I can come to comparing it would be like if Babe Ruth was caught throwing games back in the 30s (or if Ohtani had actually been betting on games)

    The Life vs Maru Intel Extreme Masters finals was what got me into Starcraft--literally wouldn't be viewing this video if it wasn't for Life. I sometimes wonder what influenced him to do it. Was it just greed?
    In any case, it's cathartic to see this topic being talked about objectively.

    I think there's another video out there going much more in-depth by one of the people involved learning about and exposing the matchfixing. He explains how it was a bunch of young guys that didn't understand the larger harm it could bring. They were basically kids that didn't see a stable future so they were tempted and told it's not a big deal to make a little extra. Course Savior running around with a brand new Rolex is a different situation.

    About SC in Asian Games, I was hopeful when SC2 was in the Asian Games 2018. I thought that there's a chance for SC or SC2 to be in e-sport olympic. The Korean players might push the agenda harder than anyone, because it could be a ticket for them to not do military service. With it, they could prolong their gaming career, and keep the scene competitive. Sadly, it doesn't seem doing well....

    The coined term "Bonjwa" originated from Savior first. The term was then coined to his predecessors "Boxer, Nada, iloceooc" after their respective reigns.
    Hence there's a saying that Savior is the truly the one and only "Bonjwa".

  • @allmyguts

    Savior sucked by the time he got caught though. Stopped practicing and started coasting and living off of the dirty money.

    The pessimism or catastrophe mentality you see in the starcraft community here, is pretty much a common thing in online communities. Any problem, dip of viewership, scandal, etc. is surrounded by “x is dead” and stuff. P.E., if a youtuber has an scandal, while it lasts they all claim the youtuber’s career is over, and stuff, then they’re still online years later. vTuber communities also keep saying “western vtubers are dying” or “company A is dying” and such when a single one has a problem. Is very common for people to exaggerate these things in their dumb heads.

      Gamers are very whiny in general. Over dramatic tweens is my generalization. And this is coming from a fellow gamer. I've been playing video games since the early 90s and behavior has only gotten worse

    • @jinjinBW
      @jinjinBW 7 місяців тому

      that's because StarCraft has always been fighting uphill battle among public perception.
      BW had to fight against tons of negative reputation because it was a video game. SC in Korea, as big as it was, always had to fight for it's legitimacy as a place as a competition in sporting sense. There was a show viewed a lot by older audience called "morning forum" where they invited Boxer and pretty much attacked him accusing of StarCraft making youth violent and angry/addicted.
      And with matchfixing scandal/gambling came and pretty much damaged a fledging that was about to break into more legitimate competition. League has moved on past and established itself while BW took a massive blow there.

    • @qwektnn
      @qwektnn 7 місяців тому

      True. Tasteless makes the title kinda misleading. It makes savior look like he cheats for game advantage to be considered bonjwa, but in reality it's match fixing as he loses on purpose for illegal bets. Skill wise he was dominating in his era, and was considered a revolutionist.

    Brood war should be in the olympics. The physical skill needed is intense. Mentally it’s even more taxing, but physically u have to be in great shape. It’s like car racing. It doesn’t seem like it’s hard, but it’s incredibly hard mentally and physically.
