So affordable and nice compared to rent in the United States
We agree!
Most people don't even make that in a month here in Mexico
I just came across your channel and I have to say you too are so adorable and a cute couple. I'm in Lake County, Florida (Groveland - about 35 miles west of Orlando). I've lived in Florida for about 30 years (originally from Puerto Rico) and I've been looking for places to live short term with my husband, while running a business remotely. I truly appreciate your videos and keep us posted about Merida! PS. So far I love everything about Merida except the heat. We love to do things outdoors and I just can't imagine being that hot all the time.
Omg I need to get a friend and move over there ASAP.
Omg seriously! I need a friend 😂
Me!
450/month??? You can't even rent a closet in San Francisco for that.
With the current exchange rate, rent comes to about $380 right now. It's insane but at the moment I'm grateful that we can earn dollars and have the opportunity to spend pesos.
A room in SF is between 1500-2000k sadly.
I’m paying 3700 pesos/month is San Miguel de Allende. At current exchange that’s $177 U.S. What am I getting for this? 2 bedrooms, a sala, a decent sized bathroom, medium sized kitchen. There’s a small room off the sala that’s being used as a home office. The azotea (roof terrace) runs the length of flat, and there is a covered lavandería (laundry area).
I’m a 15 minute walk from the centro histórico, in a neighborhood beginning to gentrify. I locked in the rent 8 1/2 years ago-the landlord has raised it 100 pesos each year after the the first year, which is quite reasonable. He pays for water, I pay for my own electricity and gas. When I moved here, the neighborhood was a bit rough, but I’ve lived in worse neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Los Ángeles. But as I said, it’s gentrifying. More rich people, both Mexicans and Gabachos are moving in.
The wall of one bedroom faces a busy street, so noise is sometimes a problem. Across the street is a preparatoria, kitty corner is a public high school, a few doors up the street is a kindergarten, and two blocks down is a primary school and the neighborhood’s “commercial district”, i.e., the small grocery stores, produce stores, butchers, etc.
My current monthly budget is around $900. I think I could get it down to $400-500 if I was really pressed and went minimalist. But I like my little luxuries, I like ordering things on Amazon, and I like helping friends in need (I’m currently paying for a neighborhood kid’s tuition at a private prep school).
I lived in SF in the early 90s, near Lower Haight. Three bedroom, three roommates splitting $865/month rent. Dangerous neighborhood. I moved away in 93, visited in 95 and happened to see the current tenant leaving my old flat. So I asked him what he was paying: $2000/month. I can’t imagine how high the rent is now, 25 years later. Incidentally, I did previously rent what was basically a closet with an even smaller closet in the Castro. That was $300! Mind you, it was a beautiful closet in a beautifully restored Victorian. I bet it’s going for $1500 these days.
Of course, you can spend a lot more in SMA, if you want a nicer and safer neighborhood closer to the historic center of town or in one of the wealthy neighborhoods. You can maintain a middle class gringo lifestyle if you’re willing to pay for it (and it will still be cheaper than the U.S.). There are plenty of Americans and Canadians here and they have their own social community. I know of people that don’t bother to learn Spanish! Personally, I’ve given all that up. Over the course of these 8 years I’ve firmly established myself in my community. If the shit hits the fan, they’ve got my back and I’ve got theirs.
@@michaelchristophergutierre7244 Is that a studio apartment or a roommate situation?
Mérida is well know fir its unexpensive house rents compare with other cities in México. But, a lot of people are moving there, mexicans and foreings, so rents for sure wiil increase.
Thank you for sharing your lovely space. That’s a great deal.
Thanks🙂 there are a lot of good deals here if you give yourself time to shop around.
What a beautiful couple. Thank you for sharing your life.
We appreciate you tuning in!
VERY COOL! Thanks for sharing! Love it that you're living your dream!
fyi....get a Crock Pot. They are great for cooking lot's of stuff.....soups, beans, stews, casseroles, etc....when you don't wanna use an oven.........even ribs ( sear them on the grill and cook in the pot).
A crock pot will be on our kitchen list going forward. Its a great idea! We had and used one frequently when we lived in the states.
@@TheYarbros I priced a regular size one at the Walmart in Merida when I was there last January. They run about $25 USD. (also check Cosco). I make stuffed cabbage in mine. Well worth the money ! We may be coming back in Aug. (if they ever re-open the border) and will pack my $10 crockpot ( that's what I pay here in Dallas) in my luggage. I use it a lot !
Thank you for the tour of your home and giving concepts of what to expect when looking at rentals in Merida. You've got a lovely place there. Keep the content rolling....

Thank you loved the tour and your home. Really appreciate all the useful info provided. Make me wanna move like next week LOL
Ayee, that's whats up! I am glad you enjoyed it.
Love this video. Super helpful. I’m new here and am 3 years late. Do you mind sharing which neighborhood in Merida this is?
What a lovely couple ❤️
🥰
So loved your tour:) I am seriously thinking of moving there, especially if I can find a place near the water. Can you give me any info on where to look for a place for myself on the water? Also, how can I start teaching English? I am a former substitute teacher and a nurse. Really love how you both seem so laid back and at peace.
¡Bienvenidos a México 🇲🇽!
¡Gracías!
Y'all are adorable 💕. Thanks for sharing. Hope to see more ...
I do have (at least) 1 question, lol...
> What qualifications are required to teach English on line?
> Are there apartments or homes that aren't multilevel?
> I have a Spanish last name but I'm definitely a guerra & a gringa (caucasian), lol... As a semi elderly female, would Merida be a safe place to move?
> Is it difficult to obtain a "green card" (equivalent) in Mexico?
Thank you
you need prepare for the "HELL", spring: 98.6 F, summer: 109.4 F. you question for "mosquiteros", in all windows and doors, you NEED soon. don't worry, because you have near the beach :-)
How did you find such a beautiful and affordable place? Love it!
You’ve got a beautiful home! Thanks for sharing! Do they include a water filtration system in the apartments? Thanks!
Thank you! Unfortunately, no water filtration system but you could probably get in installed.
@@TheYarbros Okay thanks!
Wow so many people from the U.S moving to this city
Would really like to see what the city looks like.
Have seen a variety people move to any parts of mexico for any reason. its possible to get a place to live in for time away or to actualy move to mexico for good if want and just gotta covert any usd to pesos to buy needs. some have like vacation place from any chaos in usa if wanted to get away for a time or to really live in mexico for rest of life. and work out any other details later.
5:26 Arturito Ecologico ,funny name for a water heater 😅.
I think that might be in reference of R2D2 from Start Wars , since in Mexico if you read R2D2 it kinda sounds like you're saying Arturito ( Arturo spanish for Arthur) Just thought it'd be funny to point that out . Cheers ✌️
All good man glad you're finding the content entertaining 👍
I found out it was not Arturito like 7 years ago, I am 35 now. TrueStory, I am mexican haha
Hello, I am enjoying your videos. Where would I look to be close to the beach?
Possibly Progreso, Chelem, Campeche. Although Merida is only 45min from Progreso.
Nice Apartment
Thank you, I appreciate you and like this apt too. Miss you!
Nice place
Also do they have nearby furniture stores? Where can you get a refrigerator and stove?
Yes! There are department stores like Liverpool and Sears. You'll also find them at Walmart and several local stores.
I just found you guys today and thoroughly enjoy your presentations! Your home in Merida was wonderful! Are you two working for VIP Kids or one of the other companies from you know where? Thanks, Kristine
Yes we are w/ VIPKid, but we are transitioning into more e-commerce and less classroom time. Thanks for cruising through out content!
Gurl...uour hair 😍 trading my locs with u for a week
Deal! 🤝🏿😊
Nice video guys! What was your process of renting that home ( deposit, lease, etc.)?
We signed a 1yr lease and put down a two month deposit. Since we didn't have an aval or fiador (someone who resides here to vouch for us) we paid a 1 month deposit that is returned at the end of our lease and 1 month pays for the legal fees and realtor costs.
I'm Mexican and wishing to have a house 🏡 like yours, good luck.
I hope you get it!
How far away from Centro are you? Are you walkable to most things?
A nice grocery store, mall, and coffee shops are all within walking distance of our home. We are in the Montes. Centro is a 6-8 minute Uber ride away.
Can you do an update on how teaching VIP kids is going for you both in Merida?
No problem. We'll put something together. Thanks for checking us out!
Thank you for sharing your apartment with us! Do they run a credit check to rent a apartment or will they rent to anybody as long as you have the income?
Thanks for watching! Some people do but our landlord just required bank statements and proof of income.
Very nice. I'm wondering why you eventually left Mérida if you care to share - if its that you are just traveling to other cities to see the world - is Merida a favorite place for you to settle eventually?
We definitely want to travel and experience living in other cities. Typically, we stay in one place for 6-12months. Merida was actually the longest place we ever lived abroad. Merida was great but it wasn't home for us. We're looking for a cooler climate, possibly a bigger city, inspiring views (mountains) and a different 'vibe.' Haven't found that yet so we'll keep traveling until we do, God willing.
What would you say is the average temperature in Celsius in Merida? I plan to move there one day, that is why I need to know. This info is very very imporatant for me.
The average temperature is HOT 😌. Anywhere from 31°C-36°C.
beautiful apartment, love your guys joyful spirit! But what is up with Americans and there complaints about hot weather LOL. I lived in Florida, Dominican Repubilc, Jamaica, Thailand and love the hot weather and humidity as well lol...But I digress, great video!!
🤣 I hear you! Ppl always complain about something but look - my wife is from Florida, we lived in Thailand, Colombia, got married in the DR, hit up Bali, Malaysia, Haiti, Belize, Aruba... and still nothing was hotter that the flatlands of Mérida. The Mexicans that lived there complained about the heat. Its a forreal situation...but its all relative thanks for checking out our videos!
@@TheYarbros sounds like we've walked similar paths. Would u say Merida weather is more like Arizona? What would you compare it to?
@@michaelchristophergutierre7244 thats a good question 🤔....too humid for Arizona probably more like Costa Rica with a lot less trees. It is relentless.
Medas gusto disfruten
¡Me alegro de que te haya gustado!
What website did you use to find this location?
Wait!!! You climb on top of house to refill gas tank? Gas is not ran from a gas line? would like to see how this is done!
lol I know; that was interesting for us too. Each house stores its own gas. Gas does run from a gas line, the tank is just stored on the roof (of our house).
Did you have issues with warm water?
What area did you chose? Y'all so cute!
San Antonio Cinta! And thank you:-)
How to you find your apartments? Do you go thru a Realtor?
Since you guys travel from place to place every 6 months, what do you do with the things you accumulate overtime?
We only keep 1 or 2 things from each 9lace and we travel with them. Everything else we sell. There's always a fire sale at the end of our lease.
Saw the thumbnail and just had to comment on how beautiful your wife is. Lucky man. Excuse me for not knowing your name I’m a new Subbie ☺️
Thanks for your comment and thanks for subscribing!
how did you go about finding a place there? Realtor or on your own? how do you like Merida so far?
We used a bunch of realtors that we found through expat groups and online but ultimately we found it on our own. We give more detail and resources in our video "Tips for Moving To Merida" ua-cam.com/video/KMZfl_JyFSw/v-deo.html
How did you find your apartment? Newspaper/website? How did you know it was legit
I love u guy's
you cook your food outside, lol, yall are officially Mexican!!!
What do you do about the lizards? HOW DO.YOU.KERP THEM OUT?
I catch them and take them out...I haven't been able to successfully keep them out. 🤣 No hack for them yet🤫
You’ll never get rid of them, they do no harm though, they eat scorpions and other bugs that might be harmful!! They’ll never bother you
Just found your channel today and am really enjoying it. Are you familiar with Dada? Wondering if you know of it and have thoughts on how it compares to VIPKID. Thank you!
We are glad you found us! In respects to comparing Dada to VIPKid...we haven't looked at Dada in over two years but there were two major reasons we didn't partner with them begin with: 1) PAY they paid less and had less incentives. 2) VIPKid has no mandatory minimums hrs or classes. You work whatever and whenever you like. For us those two factors were very important.
The Yarbros Thank you.
So are most people moving to merida because cost of living is cheaper than beach towns like progresso, playa del carmen or Puerto Morelos?
I cannot speak to others choices but for us the low cost of living and the high quality of life were the major draws. We didn't entertain any coastal cities/ towns most of them were unfamiliar to us and we knew Merida because of a vacation we had here some years back.
Its a really good Price for the rent, in what área is that?
Our home is in a neighborhood called San Antonio Cinta, right next to Monte Cristo. We really like the neighborhood.....A Lot!
The Yarbros enjoy!! Its a really cool place to live.
I'm arriving in Merida today.Airnb is far away 15 minutes outside the central.Should I catch Uber?
If I were you I'd probably catch an Uber. It's very affordable here.
Thanks I will.
Who’s far is the beach?
45 mins. to the beach!
I could not pull up realtors you used and your landlord.please provide
We used casamerida.mx/inicio - happy hunting.
Arrived in Merida on yesterday.lost money on airbnb. It was horrible.Misleading pics. Can yourecommed a safe economical hotel?
I'm sorry this happened to you. We didn't stay in a hotel but Airbnb is usually pretty great with customer service. You can contact them to get your money back due to misrepresentation (we did this recently). They'll even assist you in booking another stay.
Where were you when the Hurricane Delta passed over the Yucatan peninsula?
We were in Guadalajara we moved about a month ago.
Really nice video..I currently live in D.R..I teach at an international school..I am interested in teaching online.. What company do currently work for and what companies would you recommend????
Hi Selvin! We work with VIPKID and really like the flexibility of it. If you're interested, use our code (APRYL0002) and let us know when you use it so we keep an eye out for where you are in the hiring process. VIPKID provides a TESOL certification during the hiring process (so you don't need this certification before you begin, BUT a TESOL cert is usually a requirement for these platforms). I don't know much about other companies but I've heard good things about Magic Ears, Gogokid, Qkids, and Dada. Hope this gets you started on the right foot. Let us know if you have any other questions.

In a word yes! It prides itself on being secure and it really is.
@@TheYarbros thanks for answering.
Can I have the contact information for this home? I'm thinking of going for 6 months.
We worked through a realtor from casamerida.mx/ for this home. You'll be able to reach out to their team through the site.
My wife and I are moving to Playa Del Carmen in two months. Have y’all learned Spanish and is it easy to get around without being fluent in Spanish?
It is a constant learning process for us. Navigating without being fluent is pretty easy especially when we are together. I feel like together we make 1 decent interpreter....lol. Mexicans are very welcoming and helpful especially if they see that you are trying. In Playa you should not have any problems at all....EVERYONE speaks English and there is a large English speaking population there to help you settle if you connect with them. Thanks for stopping by!
Did you get citizenship? Passport?
Is the apartment available? I need a place in Merida.

@@TheYarbros I'm talking about the link to THIS apartment that you left in Merida.
How did you find the apartment?
Funny thing is we had 7 or 8 realtors showing us properties and they were all decent apts but after finding an apt we liked, making an offer and being turned down (because the owners were afraid of our Visa status). We found this one online by ourselves online booked an app #history
