I got so much out of this! Inserts within inserts, using inserts for a different purpose from which they were designed, and differentiating by tabbing. I carry a Passport-size with one elastic (3 inserts total), so mine is already super condensed -- but I agree with what you said about what you need as your EDC vs. what you can keep at home. Love your planner brain!
I feel like running towards a smaller planner now. You make such great informational videos with cute little appearances from Liam. Really enjoying the videos, you're making me think of creative and productive planning habits. Thank you!
+Kym Hretz I so rarely leave staples in anything anymore! Sometimes I'll leave a Tomoe River paper insert stapled because the pages are so thin and kind of slippery, but everything else is unbound all the time!
He is so adorable! Carie, you're a genius. I just never thought of splitting an insert in half mentally and using each side for something different. Like you said, I'm still thinking of my TN sections as ring-bound. I'm in a Speckled Fawns personal TN with a 2" spring and am madly in love with it. Thanks for the great ideas to tweak things a bit!
I have two Field Notes sized notebooks that I've not been using because of wondering how I'd fit everything in them. (One is my Time Traveler by Chic Sparrow!) I'm thinking your idea will help me finally put them into regular use!
I took my folder and card holder inserts and inserted them in the middle of my notebook inserts. It made it much more usable! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
+Jennifer Meadows I'm so glad that worked!! It's funny how sometimes you can have the exact same inserts in a notebook just in a different way and they behave so much better!
Oh my goodness! As a SpEd teacher, I had someone ask me for documentation notes on inclusion time. I panicked as I could not handover my composition notebook, explaining I work front to back (one topic) and back to front (another topic) of a notebook. I apologized for my weird brain. Thanks for the confirmation that there is a rationale for this type of planning/organizing.
This is so perfect. I've been looking at getting the planner society pocket to that is coming out but I always use an A5. I LOVE the idea of splitting the inserts into two topics by the bands. So simple and smart.
+Once Upon Main Thank you! Over the years, I've found that if my planner isn't small enough, I won't take it with me when I leave the house... and I'd inevitably end up needing it!
I made my own pocket size to see how I like it, and I LOVE it! So easy to grab and take in my purse. Your videos have helped a lot and I love how helpful they are.
I'd love to see a video where you go into more detail of how you use the weekly, monthly and daily inserts. I love the idea of a pocket plus, I'm currently using a Franklin-Covey compact size and it is so heavy! Thanks for all your videos! I love them!
I am really wanting to plan in a pocket size. So I'm 'planning' on making a fabric pocket plus and see how it works😊. Now to find the time😁. Thank you for sharing all the practical tips to do before committing to a certain size. Your son, so cute, thinking you couldn't see him😆hehe. Take care and thanks again for the video🤗💗.
Liam's making a cameo, watch out! All of what you said was so true. I had different questions for myself but arrived at the same conclusion as you did and focused on what was really necessary. That pint-sized planning video is one of my favorites as well as the London Fog one (gorgeous unicorn planner now). This guide, again, is a great follow-up. Have a good one, Carie! 😉
+paperhappymiss Knowing what you need out of your planner is *key*, isn't it?! Thank you so much for your kind words... those two videos are some of the most viewed out of them all.
He is so cute 😂 and I just wanted to say I admire how patient and calm you are with your children while you are filming but this video helped me like I thought A5 is the only size I will ever use but then listening to this I'm like well I don't need so much of it
Oh this is perfect! I just moved into an A6 and I just found your channel! Looking forward to going through your other videos ❤️❤️❤️❤️ lots of love from Texas
I've only recently been bitten by the planner bug & I've been binge -watching videos for weeks now... this has been the absolute most helpful & informative one! TFS ☺
So informative! I like your videos a lot. I finally found my size ( A6) after a lot of trial and error, but have plenty of planners to choose from if I want to switch. That said, I have a hard time with printables. Maybe sometime you could do a video on how to print them correctly? Thanks for sharing!
I know you spoke about evernote way back, but you brought it up again, an I'm curious. I know you have clients which is probably important to be able to separate. but of the plans they offer what plan do you use. I'm thinking the plus, but the extras of a premium may be worth the price. Thanks and thanks for the video, always love seeing a new one.
+Jenny R I have Premium mainly for the PDF functionality... with Premium, PDFs are searchable and can en annotated, which I use *a lot*. Plus also has 1GB allowed to upload per month (storage space itself is unlimited for every plan, but the amount you can upload varies), and I go through more than that every month too. If those two things aren't factors, Plus is amazing!
Loved this video!! You make me wanna go back to a pocket size😜 I have that insert by Annie too and I use it for notes as well!!! I love it!!! Thanks Carie💕
I've been changing week to week between a color crush personal and an A6 fauxdori i just love them both. My daughter made me promise to stick with one for a full month. And then i see one of your videos and im back into the fauxdori. Ugh!! But to be honest im never busy enough to have either. I just love planning. I could really get away with just a monthly calendar on the wall. Ive been looking at A6 tn on the buy and sell groups on facebook ( because i cant afford a new one) i just cant make the jump. As always loved your video and thanks for being real. :)
+GiGi'S Country Life Thank you so much!! I too go through streaks of jumping from book to book crazily... I'll occasionally change sizes up to three times in a week. For me personally, I know that's a sign of me feeling unsettled about something... when I get angsty, I fiddle about with my planner! 😉
Question about the number of TN's you have - they're a bit pricey - do you get them for free from the company or do you buy each one. I ask because it seems you have several and with a large family, the budget must be limited. Just wondering how you make it work.
+0campy I do have several... it's definitely a slippery slope! 😊 Many have been gifts from family, some have been gifts from friends, and the rest I've purchased myself over the past four years. I tend to tuck away $5 here and there until I have enough to buy one if there's a specific one I want.
+Angela O Now *that* is a tough question! I really like the A6 because that little bit of extra page real estate really makes a massive difference. However, when I get itching for Field Notes size, I prefer the Pocket Plus over the regular Pocket size.
I'm not sure if it is my headphones, but it sounds like there is a show going on in the background. It made it difficult to focus on what you were saying.
+jalee20 There was indeed a show on in the background... I had turned on Blaze and the Monster Machines for Liam so he might let me finish a video uninterrupted!! 😉 It didn't sound bad at all when I edited on my laptop, but I clearly should've listened to it with headphones too in order to make sure. I'm sorry about that!
There's another UA-camr that has copied this video in particular and has it posted. I don't know if you're aware. It's under the name Michael Gonzalez.
823Nina Thank you! I'm having a hard time finding the video... I've been going through every account with that username. Would you happen to have the link?
Everything's relative, I guess. I find your set up humongous. LOL. My paper size of choice is A7 (half of A6) on either a mini size Filofax with 12mm rings (a bit less than 1/2 inch) binder or a two elastic diy midory type bocklet, a bit wider (maybe 15-18 mm, like about 3/4 inch). I use some of the same tricks you use, like nested unbinded inserts. Many times they are also perforated, so that I can use them in both, the ring binder and the midory style book. Ah, for most inserts, unless they are printed, I recycle paper, so I can write only on one side. :-)
+Ne0nLicht A planner that size is *awesome*!! It is absolutely all about perspective. And I bet you never have issues carrying your planner with you. I also recycle those worksheets from the kids as journal pages... I write only on one side, and their work is on the other. It makes me smile. 😊
Well, some times, when I don't need my calendar with me and don't feel like carrying even my small planner, I carry a pocketmod (also recycled paper) for notes. I have plenty of other binders for reference and different projects (mostly work related), whih I don't need/want to carry with me all thw time. So, Imy planner is mostly my calendar and some lists and notes and context action lists (GTD style). I don't run a frathouse, a clinic, and a hockey team on top of my own life. I only need to keep my life. LOL
+Margaret S I'm so glad you've found it helpful... sometimes when I'm recording I feel like I make no sense, because explaining out of the box thinking can be difficult.

+Janet Russell Oh my goodness, thank you *so much*!! I love the sound of your super-condensed Passport size!
I love my A6 also. Great tips. I am going to try splitting my inserts as you do. Thanks
+Donita Hammond Let me know how it goes for you! 😊
I LOVE what you did with the undated daily insert! *off to Etsy*
+Maria NerdAlert Yay! That's one of the most multi-functional inserts I have!
Genius! I have recommended this video to so many! My next setup is going to be the game changer for me! Thank you Carie!
+Dee Pierce Thank you for this wonderful comment!! I'd love to hear how the setup is working for you!
Excellent ideas for someone new to travelers notebooks!!
+The Village Bohemian Thank you so much!
Lots of good ideas here! Thanks so much for sharing. (And cute kid!)
+Jelisa Sterling-Smith Aw, thank you! He's so "helpful"!! 😊
Thanks for all you do!! And the little man too!! ;)
+Monnique Arnold Isn't he funny?! Thank you so much for your thank you! 😉
I feel like running towards a smaller planner now. You make such great informational videos with cute little appearances from Liam. Really enjoying the videos, you're making me think of creative and productive planning habits. Thank you!
+Rose Blue You're so kind! Thank you!
OMG! The unbound insert concept is so freeing! *runs to remove all staples*
+Kym Hretz I so rarely leave staples in anything anymore! Sometimes I'll leave a Tomoe River paper insert stapled because the pages are so thin and kind of slippery, but everything else is unbound all the time!
So many great tips!! I'm using several of them in my planner now, thank you!!

+JennyMaine Thank you for your kind comment! Splitting my inserts was a huge gamechanger, seriously.
I get so excited whenever I see that you've made a new video. Wonderful as always. :)
+ktsls82 Thank you so much!
Love the idea of splitting the inserts!
Saves a ton of space, that's for certain!

Hi Carie :) I've been watching your videos for some time now and they are so helpful. Thank you! This one especially is going to help a ton!!

+Organized Macy Wow, thank you!! 😊
Thank you so much. Such good information.
+yupyup1562 Thank you!!
when you make inserts for note taking how many pages do you normally put in?
+Brianna Atamanczyk I usually put 10 or 12 pages in a homemade insert, so I come out with 40 or 48 individual pages total.
Carie Harling thank you!!!!!!
i love the info great video and Liam cracked me up!
+A GRACEFUL WORLD He's so silly!! Thank you! 😊
Liam is just too cute!!!!
+Belinda Prescott Oh, thank you!

Yes, I hear the background talking. I think they have the TV on.
Carie Harling No worries or apologies necessary! Keep sharing, and being a Mom!

Thinking outside the box can sometimes be difficult so seeing these other ideas is very helpful.
+Margaret S I'm so glad you've found it helpful... sometimes when I'm recording I feel like I make no sense, because explaining out of the box thinking can be difficult.
Carie Harling yes, they can be hard to explain but you had example!! 😀
ummmmmmm did you get a new shoulder tattoo???
I got it last June... it was my Mother's Day present last year! (Yeah, that's how we roll...)
