This show was filmed for the famous German TV series Rockpalast at MIDEM in Cannes on 29th January 1986. Pete Townshend’s Deep End were touring in support of Townshend’s solo concept album “White City: A Novel”. Several of the musicians that appeared on the album were featured in the line-up of the Deep End including Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on lead guitar. The set list has tracks from the “White City” album, other Pete Townshend solo tracks, Who classics, David Gilmour’s song “Blue Light” and a couple of surprises. Pete Townshend and the band deliver an outstanding performance that showcases him as a solo artist as distinct from his work with The Who.

That's the best boogie down music I have ever heard - and I'm 73 years old!
OMG. I can watch this a thousand times. The rythm, the dance, the voices, the trumpets, the man with the harmonica, the lady singers, Townsend himself.... This is so damn addictive to watch!
I have watched this an unhealthy amount of times!
@@dougpeters1625 Me too!
My daughter had the lead part in her dance recital to this song in the late 80's when she was maybe 11 or so! Sooo very cool. It's on a VHS of course. Been thinking of having one made of me on video at age 73 dancing to this and having it melded with hers from the 80's! Now how cool would that be?? Going to ask at the Create-A-Video place down the road from here how much that might cost!
I wish this Whole Concert was On UA-cam
It is. Deep End Rockpalast or London too I just saw.
What a talent. Even without a guitar windmilling the fuck out it he still entertains as a lead singer.
his song writing ability is unsurpassed, and his guitar playing ability is amongst the greats, but i always thought his voice was under rated. so, yes, you're correct.
So brilliant. One of the most underrated songs and performances of all time! Why aren't there a million likes here? Pete Townshend is a bloody genius!
I had to like this like.
I am also reminded of one of those fabulous jitterbug tunes, from way back in the day!:) The ones that just seemed to keep going and going while all of those couples danced and danced and danced!
Yes he is a genius. I've known that for a long time probably 1968? And before that. My generation. He took a 3-minute song and made a statement for the next Thousand Years
Here's about 100,000 for you. Just sublime
The answer to your question is simple: Pete goes clear over the heads of most people, especially when he works solo.
DAMN!!!
That feeling when you forget such a great tune exists, then for some reason it slowly creeps into your mind, after decades lost to memory. You look it up and it turns out to be even more of a cracking song than you remember.
Exactly! We didn't know how good we had it with tunes like this
Anyone who has ever played drums knows how incredibly difficult this is to play. Your forearms simply tire out. Incredible job by the ambidextrous Simon Phillips.
It's just because of the haircut ; )
It's all because of his technique. Without it, you can't make it through that song
Like someone else said, proper drum technique allows for longevity and better percussion health. That's why you can see many elderly jazz and Classical players still working. Additionally Simon Phillips always look like he's having fun playing!
ONE OF THE HARDEST DRUM BEATS TO PLAY RIGHT
Likewise the bassline during the solo section! SHEER endurance race!!!
That drummer, Simon Phillips, such quick wrists, I can not keep up that pace for the entire song with one HH hand, and to him it's effortless.
He and Ringo Starr are the only people I know who can shuffle so fast with a smile on their faces.
I love this band. Such energy, Pete, Gilmour & Simon, all legends.🙏
Gilmour seems really out-of-place on-stage here, like he somehow got roped into this by Townshend.
Those 2 young ladies can sure sing and dance!!
yes indeed
Yes and how about that harp player!!! Playing and dancing like that at the same time? Fantastic!!! 👍
@@TomTom-xp2jbpeter hope evans
@@Scott-ly2nk Thx for the heads up. 👍
A great musician on the drums, Simon Phillips!!!!
That song just kicks so much ass.
Now I know how Simon makes it through this song without blowing out his hand. He alternates hands AND snare drums. Nice
timmycue..... a true master!!
That's some HARD drumming! Great job by Simon.
That's probably why. If he were to play with the same hand throughout the entire song without switching his hand would probably disintegrate.
Noticed that Larry Mullin Jr. of U2 does that too on certain songs. Has a second, shallower snare to the left of of his high hat
try kenney jones
I was introduced to The Who by my Uncle in 1965. I was 8 and have been mad on them ever since. Townsend just got better and better.
Wow oh wow been many a year since I've heard this banger. I forgot just how outstanding Pete and everyone else is.
"Pete Towhnsend At His "Very Best" ! ! "And..........."Whaaaaaaaat A Band", That Im Sure He Hand Picked All Of That Awesome, Great, Genius Of Talent Performing With The One And Only, "Mr.", "Pete Townshend" "On The Same Stage," "With Him" ! ! 🎶🎵🎼😊😉✌💜
this band was the best thing Pete ever did as a solo artist. So sorry he didn't do more with them , but they must have cost an absolute fortune to maintain.
Pete Townsend is a genius. Change my mind.
Agreed! Always loved the musical genius of Townsend. This song and many others prove it. No arguments here. 👍
I agree 100%. He and his music has big infulence to my life too.
PETE TOWNSHEND MUSICAL GENIUS THE BAND IS UNBELIEVABLE THEY KICK ASS
musically and visually this video/song is a HUGE smile! just awesome!
Haven't seen anyone in a 49ers' jersey hit that hard since Ken Norton Jr.
Awesome song. Very 80s. It's funny seeing Pete singing and moving along without his guitar.
the musicianship is unbelievable....as a bassist that Steinberger EMG sound with the right player WOW. The horns are awesome!
Yeah they were awesome guitars
Townshend rocks as always and what a fabulous band👍
Bassist killing it!!!
Wow! What an explosion of talent!!
So nice to see how Pete moves without a guitar strapped on him!
Awesome concert; once in a while I dust off the good ol' VHS player and pop in the 📼 and crank the Vol. close to 10 n' 🕺💃 . I tell you, after all these decades, the sound still great.
Loved this song from the first time I heard it at work.
My favorite from Pete.Great job.
💕 Love 80’s Pete!
Great song!!
underrated masterpiece
Gilmour/Townshend/Philips/Pallidino et les autres : une dream team
Mitch Noospheres No Pino here. It’s Chucho Merchan.
Chucho Merchán rocking the bass, flawless!
I bought myself a Steinberger (or rather a Hohner B2A) after seeing this video 😂 What a driving groove!
White City has a lot of good songs on it.
Great album
Che spettacolo straordinario! Oggi nessuno sarebbe all'altezza di fare altrettanto! Musicisti strepitosi e Townshend eccezionale, come sempre.
It's like... entertainment in a speakeasy from the 20's I love it!
The way I contaminated the planet because I wasted so many batteries listening this song in my walkman! And rewind over and over with a pencil!
The last great big band. Legends.
Townsend can create some of the most amazing sounds and songs. And this band is beyond incredible .

Here, here!!! I second that. 👍
Loved it!
Peter Townsend is such a freak... and I mean that in the best possible way.
Un clásico orquestado, sinceramente maravilloso.
First time I've seen and heard this song live. Exemplary.
That's brillant Rock and Roll ❤
This is a one helluva party track and video! Plus, I hit like 1111. =)
As an SF Bay Area native, glad to see the drummer rocking Joe Montana’s jersey!
Hermosa música!!!!!

Great Pete Towsend🎉
This Song and Bare Footin are Classics.
¡¡WOW !!que recuerdos !!
AMAZING
So great, never seen this. Love me some Pete
Holy cow! It's David Sanborn playing with Pete.
@steveh46:
Not sure which one you mean but both sax players (Tim Sanders and Simon Clarke) along with the trumpeter (Roddy Lorimer and Dave Klewes) and trombonist (Peter Toms), comprise the Kick Horns. Pete introduces them here:
ua-cam.com/video/SYP0qzw-tbI/v-deo.htmlm13s
Most people aren't familiar with them but their credits are really impressive -- they've played with Beyonce, the Stones, Clapton, Dr. John, Paloma Faith and many more. They're still very active and have their own studio in London.
50 years of not being a frontman shows ,lol but we love ya anyway Pete
Great one
Temazo
BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!
03:23 Moonwalk it's crazee!!
Diamond brilliance.
pino and simon...my God! the stamina and consistency!

@@GSC333 pink is the bassist, and Simon is playing drums!
(if i'm not wrong)
What . . . a . . . band!
Peter Hope-Evans on harmonica. Played on a lot of Pete's solo albums.
Great The best 🔝🔝🔝🔝
Brilliant!
Looks so fun
It's a shame that the Deep End didn't last long. Each of their clips is fabulous. But then, it was a big group and must have cost a lot to maintain.
Pure demolition!
Unbelievable! Almost 6 years (May 2022) after this version was uploaded it only has 181k views. LOL. Peeps don't know what they are missing, but this got little air time where I was.
I got in trouble in my apartment complex after buying this album old lady below me didn’t appreciate me blasting this even though it was in the afternoon
buen tema
As I said to a mate. If you don't love Pete Townsend you're dead to me.😂
