Hello Renner and Ryon, I am 38 years old, started training Gracie Jiu Jitsu the age of 14 at the Gracie Training Association of Upland in 1998. I went on to compete in wrestling, Muay Thai and MMA, I am currently a black belt in Jitsu and what has saddened me is the fact that the majority of Jiu Jitsu gyms teach sport Jiu Jitsu. No concepts of always assuming your opponent is bigger, stronger and faster. No concepts of punch defense or closing the gap to secure takedowns and position. It’s all point based grappling for sport. These were literally the first things I learned when I was learning my first free lesson. I learned trap and roll aka “umpa”and a standard standing headlock escape. I now am teaching a few friends the 36 techniques of the Gracie Combatives curriculum. My desire and mission is to do my part to keep self defense street fight Jiu Jitsu alive and well. Thank you for your continued commitment to the art and empowering people to survive a street fight which is a life and death encounter no matter how you look at it. Thank you and God bless!

Agreed. Best off tooling up, and learning deescalation techniques and situation avoidance, for self-defense but training BJJ anyway for the excellent personal and social benefits it offers. Ever noticed that almost all the evidence of BJJ effectiveness involves a one-on-one unarmed match-fight scenario? Yet most folks will never need to concern themselves with such practices. Still a really beneficial thing to do providing we're mindful of its limitations IMO.

Y'all had me until you badmouthed striking arts. Striking is not one dimensional as you say. The point is to use footwork to move away from the trajectory of those 6 -10s while throwing your own. Hit without being hit. A good striker doesn't block, they dodge. Do you feel it's necessary to undermine other martial arts to make the one you practice seem better? I guess that is a typical business model, but it's kind of sad to me that martial arts can be as silly as Burger King vs. McDonald's. They have things they do well and things they don't. MMA exists as it is now because of GJJ, but look at the greatest MMA champions today. All of them practice boxing and muay thai in addition to wrestling and jujitsu.

i think that why its called Mixed Martial Arts... MMA today isn't what it was 20 years ago. Back in the day it was Martial Art vs. Martial Art. ie. Boxing vs. Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai vs. Tae Kwon Do, etc... Today, MMA is athlete vs athlete. All MMA athhletes train wrestling, boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, etc. But what is the essential art that every MMA athlete must train... Jiu-Jitsu. Why is that?
What would be interesting to see now days is an actual Martial Art vs. Martial Art competition. But a pure Martial Art vs. pure Martial Art. Not MMA vs. Boxing. But maybe a 100% wrestler vs. a 100% boxer etc. Had it not been for the Gracie family (Carlos and Helio), none of us would be having this discussion. Aloha \m/ \m/

Dojangles 3:00 He literally says, ”Not that strikes are bad.” And you are right, striking is not one dimensional. But in a fight, yes, footwork and all that is important, but why not just go for an easy clinch and takedown? (in terms of a street fight) The easiest and most effective path to victory should be the one taken. It's way easier to close the distance and establish the clinch (which barely takes weeks of practice to become reflexive) than dodging punches and using footwork Muhammad Ali style (which takes a considerable amount of time of practicing to etch into your muscle memory) by all means, practice it all. Get good at footwork, striking, grappling, blah, blah, blah. But the reason people love BJJ is that it's simple and easy to learn compared to other arts. So much so, it makes even the weakest be able to defend themselves against stronger opponents.

Hello, big fun of bjj here and a practitioner. I live in Greece, most months of the year at least, and thought we don’t have a branch of yours, where I reside, I still practice in a dojo.
Now, I have a question that is widely debated in my line of work and I’ve decided to address it to you, as you are the leading experts on the subject.
I work as PMC. As you probably know for us, especially in the CQB, the unarmed combat is a luxury we can not afford. In the unlucky scenario, which is never the case, but for the sake of argument, two combatants have to engage without firearms, knives are always involved.
And I have to mention that we are not dealing with your average, holding a knife try to kill you guy. We are dealing with people, stress free under those circumstances, that will appear their knife in the middle of the fuzz, when you’re grappling on the ground and you have blind spots, and you will feel it rather than see it. Also well rounded in bjj.
I claim no expertise. I’m a practitioner who loves the art of bjj and tries to find applications of the art. In most of the simulations if not all, that high belts, higher than mine, which were dealing with the above scenario, were ended up stubbed. Stubbed badly. As did I.
The structure of the simulation was, PMCs with both bjj background and not, vs bjj practitioners of all levels. Both starting the sparing bearing knives. With two variations, one assuming both wearing vests and the other none and also three subcategories, the first, knives were deployed from the start, second, knives were deployed after hand to hand combat was engaged and the third, the knife was to deployed in personal preference.
There was also another test of if the combatant was holding a knife or not, was unknown to his opponent.
All the practitioners were very friendly to each other, with no predetermined outcomes in their minds. Just experimenting.
We understand that the bjj we are practicing, in my dojo at least, is sport oriented.
Is there a branch, and I don’t know if branch is the right word, a curriculum maybe, that addresses the above situation? Like which guards are to be used and under which circumstances?
I wish you could make a video addressing the subject and give us guidance.
Any input from our bjj community is more than welcome.
Thank you in advance, and keep up the great work of spreading the art!

Ossssss!!! I have a few black belts in other styles, but I’m only a 2 stripe blue belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu under one of Royce’s black belts (so take my opinion with a grain of salt). However, when Khabib fought Conor, I gave Khabib a 9 out of 10 chance of winning because it’s very hard to knock someone out immediately if they have a decent defense and it’s a lot harder to maintain a distance for standing strikes than it is to close the distance to get a takedown imho. I figured Khabib would avoid getting knocked out initially, eventually close the distance and take Conor down. Then Khabib would submit him. This is another advantage of Jiu Jitsu imho, the Gracies have shown it’s easier to close the distance than maintain it, easier to get the takedown than avoid it, then the strikers are like fish out of water or like a baby in the water who doesn’t know how to swim. Osssssss!!!!!

Started jiu jitsu over the Summer. And yes this is one thing I have come to see too. But your way of putting it on a scale like that makes it much more tangible to understand.
As a person who comes from standing arts, it makes good sense that the less joints you have available to you, the more helpless you are as a striker.
I had traditional weapons training in my background foundation and jiu jitsu has even changed that for me. When sparring sword or spear for example, why stay out where I'm engaging his weapon instead of *him* and where I can receive maximum damage from my opponent when I can close in, grapple and/or run em' through?
Thanks for the new perspective. One day I'd be honored to meet you guys!

Helo, with all the respect to Bjj and the value of Gracie university which is indeed one of the greatest Grabling arts teaching group. Bjj is the most successful recorded art on tape, I am sure that pancration, wrestling, boxing and judo were very successful aswel but a little less recorded. Secondly, what you said about the punching power lvls was taught to me by my kick boxing coach in the 90s without him knowing anything about bjj, I am sure this was common knowledge from the ancient times when fighting realistically was the only way to survive I also want to add that the scenario were somebody fight someone else in self defence using only Grabling or only striking doesn't really exist, anyone will use anything to survive depending on the athleticism of the person. Lastly I want to thank you for giving a lot of good feedback regarding street fights and combat reality, keep up the good work, promote the style, ground work Grabling is very important for the street either for finishing the fight or for standing back to your feet again!

  • @Shaolinportoviejo

It also works because of the fine motor skill issue. All things being equal, you don't need as much coordination to execute the techniques as in striking arts. And you get to hug your frenemies in every class.
In the only real life altercation I've used this in, the philosophy worked. Navigate through the punches and clamp on to your aggressor. This isn't foolproof. But as a statistical beast, better to cover and clinch then swing and trade blows.
And there is the whole nonviolence thing. You can turn the volume to 10 and do harm, or turn it to 1 and just give someone a shove once you have a good base.
Every law enforcement agency should mandate training in this art or something similar to protect and serve to everyone's benefit.

Of course jiu jitsu is very valuable in fighting. However it is not necessarily the martial art that gives a fighter his or her power to win but rather it is the person, the martial artist, the fighter through their efforts and abilities that wins. Also keep in mind that we don't train martial arts just so we can prove we are better than others - we train martial arts so we protect ourselves and protect others against injustice. Never lose sight of the fundamentals and principles that all martial arts teach, and never use it to harm others for your own gain.

basically, you want to see if there's a good real-world track record of the techniques and training methods you use in the gym also working in MMA or self-defense. If your teacher is teaching you a basic armbar and you're sparring/rolling and using the armbar, you can ask yourself, is there any evidence that an armbar really works? And the answer is yes--it works against the very best fighters in the world going 100% both in MMA and grappling.
That is, I think that rather than trying to reason your way to figuring out what works, you need to look at the evidence.

    • @blakesanchez376
      @blakesanchez376 4 роки тому +1

Sparring or rolling will let you know what works and what doesn’t. Even though most techniques take some time, experience, and correction from an expert to be effective you will start to get a feel for what is bs just by having a opponent to practice with. I like grappling vs striking because practicing striking leads to concussions.

Ju Jitsu IS for the streets..... And I don't mean traditional Jujitsu. Of course a modern jujitsu practitioner could beat a traditional practitioner on the ground anytime due to the amount of training involved. And people back then also though that going to the ground is an insensible thing, which is why most striking art takedowns involve only getting the other guy down while you remain standing (muay Thai, karate, etc), it wasn't until the modern age where the 1v1 system became popular (back then there was also 1v1, but people still had the mindset that fighting on the ground is absurd because of how vulnerable it is, like the ground is a scary thing, hence my point about striking takedowns), that jujitsu flourished, because that's what it is, jujitsu is a sure kill in a 1v1 situation. And it is the best in that aspect. It is because of the rules, the limiting factors that allowed the art to flourish, as people try not to think about the actual applications and train to be able to win under that certain rule set. (Examples are how limiting rule sets allowed striking to be the way it is today, axe kicks and domawashi'd would not have been popular if it wasn't for the no leg kick rule, stand up grappling would not be as advanced today if not for the no striking rule in Judo, etc.) Point is, it is because of these limiting factors that gave birth to effective techniques that would never have been thought of I an anything goes situation.
Traditional jujitsu was legit the art of "anything goes" so it would be logical to think it will be the ultimate art, but the fact is that limiting rule sets allow certain aspect of fighting to advance, so modern martial arts is way more advance than it was before. So if a modern martial artist with the skill sets of today were to try to go back to the "anything goes" rule set of traditional jujitsu, then it will be the real street art. (well bjj was what happened when a judoka tried to go back to it's roots in traditional jujitsu anyway, so if an mma fighter whose capable in about all aspects of fighting were to practice "anything goes" rule sets safely, it would be even better.
Btw I made this comment in reply to the people that say jujitsu is not for the streets. Jujitsu definitely not perfect for the streets(back on tar? Oof. 2v1? Oof) , but it is, in my opinion, the best so far, for the streets. (Besides, even in a 2v1 situation you would most likely lose anyway no matter what art it is if the opponent has experience brawling, just training to fight more than one fighter is impractical, it is better to be good at fighting one guy, and then do minimal training for situations where you fight more than 1

I have a strong karate background and I have been practicing bjj for 5 months, and believe me bjj is great but is has really great flaws, in many positions the grappler just can’t defend head bumps, bites, genitals, and eye poking, these flaws are not present in sport fights because of course... these movements are banned for OBVIOUS reasons. A “1 level” punch that pokes your eyes is just enough for leaving you blind for ever... being in a life or death fight in that distance is just stupid.
Again, bjj is great, but it is far of being what these sellers are saying.

BJJ is legit but its popularity is due to a number of things: the Japanese stripped down Karate so much to a “do” that it lost its fighting “jutsu” so all the close combat and grappling components were lost (ua-cam.com/video/3sUPvbBOIe4/v-deo.html); they removed the Kyusho aspects (the body’s weak anatomical areas and not the Erath, metal, wood stuff) and failed to teach them to the West (perhaps intentionally) (ua-cam.com/video/nJVO9Jmqv6I/v-deo.html) ; and 3) in BJJ, unlike Karate, you can test the effectiveness of your technique because your opponent taps out. However, Karate is being taught as a jutsu again, ironically not in mainland Japan, which makes it suitable for self-defence (ua-cam.com/video/gLXX_k6pcvM/v-deo.html).

It looks like it depends more on how much one knows of ground game when you take them to the ground. The same thing is valid for striking.
When I spar with my BJJ friends, white to purple belts, they are completely clueless standing. They couldn't hit me if their life depended on it. I don't even need to throw back, I can win those fights on gassing them out alone.
Your life and death depends on distance, defense and head movement. Wrestling for the pocket. Not on a simple up and down movement. That was an unfair downplay of every striking art.
